I can't believe that we've weakened ourselves. Either way, as Palace fans we'd best keep our fingers crossed and hope he turns out to be worth it.

God, I hope this isn't true. Saints are obviously taking us for a ride, and I can't believe Jordan is naive enough to pay out this much money. I'd much rather see Shipperley or Bradbury back, and they would cost a damn sight less than £3m.

It looks like this story is true and even SKY are now running the story on their text pages.
I think he would be the ideal player we need for Morrison and Forssell but just think £3 million is a bit too much but Jordan and Smith must want him to keep pursuing it.
It will be interesting to see what Southampton do now, they said £3 million possibly to scare us off but we've come back with a bid of £3 million. I think Southampton will now accept the offer but we've got to persuade Beattie to drop down a division which i think he'll probably do.
I hope this deal can be tied up for Saturday so he can make his debut and just thinking he will be the club's record buy.

I saw a tape of Southampton v Liverpool this weekend. Beattie only came on as a substitute in the last 15(?)minutes but he looks exactly they forward we need. He won the ball in the air, set up at least one goal, and was instrumental in Southampton's comeback.
Great news.

We have 2 skilful forwards who lack physical presence, so maybe Beattie is THE MAN?

Definitely fits the bill IMNHO. Tall, strong, young centre forward who can roam around up front, come from deep, and hold the ball up. Exactly the player we need. If Jordan is prepared to get his man then fair play to him.
At least for once we have a bit of balls in the transfer market. Haven't ever seen that before. Okay £3M is alot of money but if he ends up scoring 10-15 goals this season then he will repay the fee. A good striker is never cheap these dayz, unless you are lucky enough to find someone like Pahars!
From the Saints Web Site:

The talented young striker was voted the Saints' 'Player of the Year' for 1998/99 as he scored several vital goals as the club successfully battled against the threat of relegation.Beattie arrived at The Dell in the summer of 1998 as part of the package that saw Kevin Davies move to Blackburn, but any ideas he was merely going to be a makeweight in the deal were quickly dispelled. He scored five crucial goals in 35 Premiership outings in that season, as well as one in the League Cup. After making only seven appearances for Rovers, Beattie has had a considerable impact on the south coast with his imposing style frightening the opposition defence. An England under-21 international, Beattie has the potential to be a key figure in the long-term future of the club.

I Think this is too much of a gamble at that price. Do you know how many goals he scored last season? Zilch.
Ok, he wasn't all that fit, but should we be gambling £3m on a player who hasn't scored for over a season? Hoddle said on Sky Sports tonight that he's not selling him. Personally, for once in his life I hope he's telling the truth.

Also just seen what Beattie said at the weekend after Southampton rejected our £2 million bid for him.
He'd rather battle for a first team place in the Premiership than have a regular first team place in the First Divison.
If Southampton accept, would he change his attitude?

I think he's bound to say that really.

Right hand, meet left hand. Left hand, say hello to right hand.
Less than a week ago Smith was quoted as saying that "we've bid in excess of 2 million and that's our final offer, take it or leave it", or words to that effect.
A few days later we allegedly bid 3 million!
I don't think Beattie will leave and I still think it's a shed-load of money for a guy with "potential".
Mind you we "paid" nearly that for Ismael and despite Ron Noades' claims that his judgement was sound and that Ismael will soon be recognised as "world class", what a waste of money that turned out to be.
Still , at least it stopped Andy Roberts being our record buy!

For 3million you got of got of bought back Shipperley for less or payed Sheffield United that amount they quoted for Marus Bent. However former Southampton forwards have always gone on to do well for us. Just look at Neil Shipperley and Ian Dowie.

I was at the Southampton/Liverpool game and although Beattie only came on for 15 mins believe me he has got some class. How can we doubt his ability when at present we have three forwards who quite frankly are not worth two bob. With two home games coming up we need to get some points.

Great if he signs
My big worry is that he could be worth nothing if this EU plan comes into force...would have thought that would be reflected in the price.....?
