I put villain's range as:-

QQ-88, 44, 22, A8, Q8, J8, 86, 84, 82, 75, 64, 62, 53

Against that range Ks8s has 36% equity which means 2.8-1 pot odds make it +EV to call.

Whats poker stove? Seem to be having massive swings of variance. Up $120 two days ago, then down $100, up again last night $70, then down $70, and up $70 in one session this morning, only to haemmorhage about $70-$80 in a short session this afternoon, not helped by QA running into J7 (did raise pre-flop) which made two pairs and KA hitting the K but running into trips (played particularly badly).

Just lost a buy-in when my set of 7s on the flop ran into a flopped set of 10s which then made quads just to rub the salt in! Made it back in the same session though!

Out of interest - who multitables? I've been getting used to 2 tabling on my laptop, but the screen isn't big enough for more than that on Laddies - just tried 3 when I ran a bit card dead, but it soon did my head in once the hands started coming!

I play 3 MTTs at the same time max but if I'm on laptop i can only really do it on stars or fulltilt - I play at Hills but you cant resize and Blue Sq is either too big or tiny. No doubt you play worse on more than one table though - you cant concentrate as you should

PokerStove is a very cool free tool that allows you to compare the equity between a hand and a range of hands. Very useful for figuring out the correct play in a situation.

I find I do best when I multitable 3 tables. I start to have problems around 4/5 tables, mainly because I find I get the tables muddled up (dunno what's wrong with my brain!). Multitabling is where it's really critical to have stats and a HUD as it's very hard to pay proper attention to multiple tables.

Paul, se1, Sam etc, many thanks for your feedback. Taken all onboard.

I agree about binning K8, but yesterday, given those stakes etc, I was trying out playing looser which meant playing a lot more connectors and suited cards.

On betfair, you can multitable and resize tables to any particular size you like, so play at least two cash, and one tournament at the same time, which is enough for me. Have played four before but on my monitor the size tends to be too small, and lost a whole buy in, when pushing all in with my nut flush only to find I had nothing as there wasn't one on the board (misread a club as a spade). Have tried playing tournaments with poker stars alongside cash games in betfair, but that becomes irritating as I have to keep clicking on the betfair screen, then the pokerstars screen and often end up putting amounts to bet in the chat box rather than the interface, meaning I have accidentally folded when timed out with QQ on occasions.

I can play 4 tables and concentrate FULLY on every table. This is on Stars where the tables are tiled and this is possible on the laptop. On one 17" screen I can 6-9 table with no problems but HUD is running and I play tight. Can't imagine doing it on a site on which you can't tile?

I also NEED to have a mouse if I'm 5+ tabling when on laptop as I can't use the touch pad quick enough....

Must have a magnet for volatile tables today. Have KK early position, one caller from pre flop raise, flop comes down 774, continue to bet out turn and river, river gives 7 for full house. Appropriate raise on river for pot size is returned with an all in. Can't put him on AA, as there is no pre-flop raise or any raise of any kind, possibly lower full house, so I call and he turns over 7 10 offsuit for quads. Is there any way I can realistically fold my hand on the river?

Then A8 hits an Ace on the flop, I show strength by betting out the Ace on the flop and turn, get called all the way to the river by a pair of 4s who makes straight on a board of A2359.

SamTheOldGoat

So he made the straight on the turn and had 'second' pair with a straight draw after your raise P.F? Seems 'OK' to me!

PS, 74=NUTZ

saul1664

Can't remember how the board actually paired out on the second one. However at some stage he was chasing an four outer when clearly behind.

I just played one of those 70FPPs satellites - quite a laugh

One guy went all in with Q5 offsuit on the first hand and got calls from A8 and J9

I came 2nd in the end when I decided to push with AJ heads up and ran into AA!

Not that I wanted to spend about 24 hours playing a 20000 runner main event anyway!

Quiet on here last night - everyone losing lol ???

I had a disappointing evening. Spent a couple of hours on a $24 satellite to the $60,000 guarantee on Full Tilt and managed to qualify OK. Then when I played the actual tourney which started at 11pm I was totally card dead from the start. Tried a couple of moves to keep up with the pace but got caught and ended up short without ever really being in the game - got back to moderate position with first push only to stay cold and ending up pushing again after a while and out I went. Thoroughly depressing four hours or so with not even a decent hand at some stage to get excited about

Anyway - am through to the last chance $350 turbo to WCOOP14 tonight. 1in 3 get through so maybe ......

Yes. Just bubbled going for the winner rather then not getting involved and finishing comfortably in the money. Urgh, one of my worst poker moments for decision making.

Good luck with your tourney mate.

not necessarily a bad decision - it's a legitimate tactic to take advantage of others tightening up around the bubble - but you have to pick the right spot. avoid the short stacks who are liable to make a stand and have been waiting for a decent hand to do it, and the big stacks who can bust you - oh and get your money in first (my biggest fault I am always falling foul of). If you're calling you have to have the best hand.

Ultimately the most successful tournament players are the ones who don't settle for just making the money

Think I may give this game up...reraised a mid position raiser all in with AQsuited....only to find the BB sitting there with KK

Was sitting in about 100 of 300 with 175 to go through to the main event.

It was heads up and my opponent had crippled my stack pretty badly, when three handed, with a two-outer.

These helped me to come back and win.

Just to give you a heads up, there is a APAT tournamen in Walsall on 3rd November. £75 buy in. Going to be driving up so if any one fancies it let me know.

There are also live satellites in the Grovesnor Victoria on 6th october or you can buy in directly on the 9th. Should be a good tourney.

The world APAT one is happening in the next month or so, details to be announced soon.

Also, does anyone play on Virgin Poker? Just qualified today for their live $220 tourney in late November. You can only qualify by winning/top places in one of the online Satellites.

Indeed, 9th October.

They have changed the structure for Season 2 and a lot more tickets are given away using live qualifiers at a local Casino. Therefore the £75 tickets going on sale are going to be in short supply. probably will give the live qualifier a chance to give me a bit more exposure to live poker...

Think it was 9 minutes for the Cardiff one, wonder how long it will be for fewer tickets!

think it probably will be £20 with the top 10% getting a seat, the rest cash prices not too sure if the satellite is worth it but will think about it nearer the time!

Can't remember fully but will get the HH's later. He's just been on a sick downswing, literally averaging out 2/10 50/50's at max, outplayign people left right and centre, getting sucked out on time and time again. I'm not just saying it because we are brothers but he has seriously run horribly. I don't think he'll stop although he says he will at the moment. Maybe just take a few months off. He's been playing for a living for 2 years, has no debt, lived a 'balla' lifestyle, plenty of expensive assets and has savings so it's not like he's broke and depressed. Just fed up I think Paul, and I know how he feels as I had the same sort of run in end of June I think, running through to beginning of Sept off and on. It can be such a cruel game :(

I know how he feels! I wasn't counting but a couple of weeks ago I think I must have lost at least a dozen coinflips in a row - what are the odds!

My problem is that whatever my results, whatever my stats, I have a great deal of difficulty accepting that I am a good player. Everytime I lose I question myself and the longer I go without winning the more I convince myself that all my previous wins must have been pure flukes! And the more I think like that the worse I play until I reach a point where I have to stop, regroup and get back to basics. Then I win again! ...and it all starts over...

I think I either need to start winning more consistently...which is difficult cos my ITM % is already between 20 and 25% - or I need to start cashing in bigger tournaments. I keep getting in to them but then failing. I have been unlucky a couple of times with 50:50s and bad beats and a couple of times I have just been card dead at the wrong time. I keep telling myself that sooner or later I'll get the rub of the green at the crucial moment which will propel me into a first mega cash (which of course then bankrolls the ability to play higher stakes more regularly) - but I am getting impatient (and that of course leads to more loose play)

As you say it is a cruel game and I think it might take more patience and discipline than I have to ever really break through to the upper echelons

Do you know what a good player should expect to have as an ITM% for MTTs? For the past 3 months I am at 20% but am aiming for 30% but don't really have an idea of whether it is realistic. I remember speaking to one very good player who told me for the year he was at 40%!

Well if you think about it as most MTTs pay approx the top 10% - if you're over 10% ITM then you're ahead of the game!

I just looked at officialpokerrankings.com and the top 150 ranked players nearly all have an ITM % between 10-20%. I suspect if you got the calculator out the average would be about 15%

That surprises me a lot, I expected it to be a lot higher. Using your previous point of tournaments paying the top 10% I feel this could be extended. If, for example, in a $50 tournament there are 600 runners, a reasonable % of players are donks and do not have any real hope of getting ITM and a minute chance of actually winning. In some tournaments 150 of 600 players could be discounted I feel meaning a 60/450= 13.33% chance of making the money for all of the better players.

Also I am interested to know if anybody knows the answer, occasionally you hear of players such as Annette (the norweigan 19 year old) that won the WSOPE and how many online tournaments she had won and a player called 'NeverWin' who has won 100+ online MTTs, how many tournaments do they play per day on average to have that many wins?

Quite annoyed, just realised that realise why i sometimes dislike this game.

Felt I played the hand ok, by the fact that he limped in I did not have him on a AA,AK,KK.
So when he bet the flop I felt my AQ was good, especially with the Q of the hearts.
When the Q came down I just needed to avoid that last heart and of course there it arrived.
Was going along quite nicely. About 40 people left, winner to take down $2k.
Would of been up to 34k and coming along quite nicely. Instead down to 6. Got dealt 99 a couple of hands later. Went all in. The same guy then calls showing his KK to send me flying out!

Quite depressing!

I wonder how relevant the ITM figure really is. The tournament structures are generally so skewed that getting ITM isn't as important as making the top 10. I guess what separates the good player from the very top players is their frequency of making the FT and their placing at the final table.

On Stars, Annette_15 has played 1899 tournaments and is up $532633. She is ITM 302 times (16%). Of those 302 ITM times she finished 1st 24 times and in the top 3 60 times. Her biggest cash was placing 7th out of 2510 entrants in a $2600 buyin for $163150.

Not sure Fin, but just looked at VIRIN REPLAY and they have the BSquare poker on from last night, is that the same one.

Paul, how many chips did villain have in that situation mate. I don't think he can really pass for what's in the pot as I assume there are many antes as well? You got the full HH? Welld one though mate :)

I wish Laddies had a massive membership like stars. I dont like stars - interface is a bit mickey mouse and the cash outs are a pain but I want to start playing a few $25 tournies where there will be more than a few hundred runners and you can't really get that on laddies.

That's what dreams are made of :D

I think villain in the first hand can make that call. 17k in the middle. He makes it 16k, pot=33k. You shove=Pot@ 33k+your 16k=49 in the middle with 29 left to call, so 29 to win 78......... I make the call!

I agree but only on the basis that she had plenty left behind. In tournaments I think you have to bear in mind that - pot odds or not - you can't reload. If its "lose and out" then there may be a better spot for those chips

I'm at it again by the way...just made the cash in the $7k. sitting 15 of 31

Well that's true, have literally ground out £70 over the week, to haemorrhage it in about 30 seconds. Once when folding a straight and running flush draw to a significant reraise on a board containing 3 hearts, and thinking that it was a poor fold, especially after seeing the same player play 88 on a QK board heavily and lose (wish I'd seen that play before), then A4 making two pair on the flop, pushing all in when raised, only to see A9 hit the 9 on the turn, but that's the variance that makes the game great.

Managed to claw a bit back when getting QK in late position, early position raised to $3.20 and the whole table called (6 handed), leaving me having to call for value. Flop came down QQ2, managed to keep both players in the pot until the turn when got pushed all in by AA, no help for him and trips prevailed. All swings and roundabouts.

Recovered well at the end of the day, cash tables not productive, a day of getting outdrawn and big pairs beaten, but a good 2nd in turbo tourney boosted funds back up. Was chip leader for ages and ages though more difficult to keep it in a turbo, at one stage was 3x next player 33K to 10K, but played badly on final table, and looked like early exit until I managed to maintain my stack around 20 to 25K with a series of all ins. Heads up blinds were 3/6K and he was 4:1 leader so stood little chance. When forced all in J2 played JQ and I was virtually drawing dead.

Definitely watch ActionJeff 7 SNG strategy video - it's excellent strategy and fun to watch too as he sucks out a couple of times! Also his video 9 is pretty good too.

I really like the new CR site - pretty good all-in-all. Great that CTS is a new lead pro, and has a $25/$50 video up which is pretty cool.

Second hand I played today got my whole buy in crushed when KK ran into JJ with J on turn, re-raised pre flop and on the flop, so he must have known he was behind. Luckily table was pretty volatile and $50 buy in was got back with an additional $20 interest, seems to be major suckout city for me for at least a week now.

No, 32+ runner pub league sponsored by poker.co.uk, have won two medals. They compete for monthly prizes and WSOP seats, sponsored by badbeat (who have offered to sponsor me on betfair up to $200 per day).

WARNING - whinge alert.

I suck at poker. So far in September I've played 10K hands - I was up $600 this month, now down $130. Nothing going right - whenever I make TPTK really loose villains have trips of my pair. 70/30 muppets raising and calling with crap all day, suddenly have the nuts when I'm in a hand. I would say they were at the top of their range - their hands are not even in the range I'm putting them on.

I wouldn't mind if I was just being bad-beated - that's part of the game, but I can't get my money in good any more - my Sklansky graph looks like shit. I suck.

Head up se1, head up. I had the same last week, think I mentioned it on here. But keep sticking your money in when you're ahead, avoid coin flips and you'll get back on track.

Sam, nah, didn't take anything down. Top three did... it was a good experience though and it gave me a lot more confidence.

I have been constantly outdrawn and sucked out for 7 days. The difference in the way I play now is that I have a lot better bankroll management (I factor in 40 x complete buy ins before I consider even moving up a level).

Because of this I have been able to manage the losses well and haven't lost confidence which in turn leads to bad decisions. I find that I rarely go on tilt (whereas before I would end up playing heads up to try and get money back, not advisable). If it's really bad (and some days you cant win no matter what you do), stop playing (maybe for a couple of hours or even a week or two if you are getting jaded). There is always going to be a game of poker for you out there, it's not going to go away.

Try switching codes, if you are getting done on cash tables, switch to MTT or STT, both codes have different skills you can utilise.

David Amsalem
27-09-2007, 11:58 PM
Urgh, just been outdrawn and outdrawn and outdrawn by the same player in a STT time and time again only to lose to him in heads up.

So frustrating. Terrible luck.

Harsh beat with Kings (turning a $40 profit into a $20 dollar loss). Player before me raises to $3, I re raise to $7 he calls, flop comes 782 (2 clubs), reckon I am in front, as AA would have seen a reraise, so put him on QQ JJ, reckon I am in good shape, so put him all in. Turns over trip 8s.

Currently lying 4th in $30, $2100 guaranteed at first break, about 35 left.

bubbled in 12th, forced to push with A8, met A3, A3 on the board seals fate, and at the same time lost almost another buy in, when flopped flush, only to get all money in against two pair Q3 for a 3 to hit the turn for full house. Not my night.

Strange way to play aces, KtO must have known he was calling the all-in.
KJs what does he think he's beating?

I always say if you call with aces you deserve to lose.

KevTheOptimist
29-09-2007, 10:34 AM
THat was the very next hand after he beat my queens and I banked on the fact he thought I'd be 'steaming'.

He wasn't a good player mate but everyone gets their luck.

I have more of a gripe with the way I played the queens though lol. Normally I wait to see a harmless flop before going on the attack but in this case, with the action before me I wanted to get the big stack out the equation plus thought with the action there was prob a few big cards out already. Oh well

Oz, I've read enough of your posts to say you'd always play a hand one way only. ;)

If a loose-aggressive player was behind you I'd consider calling before them, let them come over the top and then re-raise over the top of them again.

29-09-2007, 02:32 PM
Yes done that before against a maniac who has already raised, otherwise with aces I want to build the pot and isolate one or two players (limit).

Play my hands depending on position and opponents.

Bit gutted.

Went to Big Slick last night. Was the £10 rebuy with Super Add on

Played quite well and got up to 40K.

For the last hour wasnt hitting any cards and so could only keep level by picking up some blinds.

By 1 in the morning was down to 28k in chips. Blinds were 4k with 1k antes. 14 people left, 7 on my table which made each hand worth 13k.

On the button, dealt K 10 suited. Folded round to me. I pushed all in. Small blind folded. Big blind ( Stack 80K) stared me out for around 5 minutes and then decided to call. He flipped over 10 3.

I stood up knowing what was going to happen. Flop comes blank, with the turn comes the 3. River brought no help and I was out! I just cant belive he called it, in my opinion that is not the sort of hand you would defend your big blind with, especially considering I was not that short stacked.

If I had doubled up would of been up to around 60k, and approaching the final table. That is the sort of position I like as I could of sat back for a while, as I am generally quite a solid mid stack final table player.

So close to the 2k top prize, but so far!

Oh well, on to the next game!

Can't do much right at the moment. 0.25/0.50 cash table.

Dealt KK, everyone folds apart from player before me, who raises to $1.50, I reraise to $3, he flat calls. Flop is non threatening 7 6 2, he calls $7, I put him all in he turns over AA, and it's another buy in gone. Couldn't possibly put him on AA after not reraising on the flop, had him on a strong pair. Never mind.

So he checked as he was first to speak, you bet £7 and he flat calls? Where did the rest of the money go in? That's why posts like this make no sense whatsoever as the hand isn't shown in the true light at all:confused:

You're not reading it properly. He was first to act, he bet out $7 on the flop and I put him all in, which he called which is why the money went in as I didn't put him on AA.

Hand historys are a bit of a mare on betfair, they save to your hard drive as a session, so you have to sift through about 200 hands on the one session to find the one to then put it through a hand converter to then put it on here, you can't directly call it up from the client.

Hand historys are a bit of a mare on betfair, they save to your hard drive as a session, so you have to sift through about 200 hands on the one session to find the one to then put it through a hand converter to then put it on here, you can't directly call it up from the client.

Could you use poker office or something which stores them?

I apologise Saul. Didn't read the all in bit :)

As Mickey said, don't you use tracker or office?

I think tracker is more intricate but much harder to use imo. I'd personally recommend PokerOffice. Definitely take $50 out of your roll or whatever it is and purchase. :)

Certainly I agree with Sam that PO is much easier for a novice to use, and also much nicer looking. Personally, the main reasons I prefer PokerTracker/PA HUD to PokerOffice are:

1) PokerOffice hooks into the poker client software to give real-time pot odds and outs analysis. These are simple, basic calculations that any player should have a good idea of anyway so are unnecessary, but this functionality means that PO regularly breaks and needs updating due to client software updates. PokerTracker very rarely breaks as it is just a hand history processor. Also as a result PT supports many more sites than PO.

2) PA Hud is much better, IMO, than the PokerOffice HUD. You have detailed popup stats, and lots of really useful statistics like Fold to Continuation Bet %, Fold/Call/Raise Continuation Bet % that PO simply doesn't support at all.

3) PokerTracker is currently THE standard in the online poker world, and as such you can make use of lots of great third party applications that make use of it - data mining applications, fishy table finding applications, expectation, luck and play analysis applications. What's more, if you read forums like twoplustwo and want to follow their strategies for analysing your play, they nearly all use PT.

4) PO is built in Java and is bloody slow when you have a large database, even using MySQL. Currently on PT I have over 3 million hand histories in my PGSQL database and no slowness issues.

5) PO does not allow easy exporting of hands, which makes it hard to migrate your database to another tracker application or website. PT allows full exporting which means I have easy access to all my HHs. I have about 16K hands in PO for the first couple of months of 2007 that I cannot analyse because I can't export them into PT.

Thats how I saw it, the raise wasn't really big enough to force a fold so it was a relatively straight forward call to see the river

** Dealing the river: 10 of Hearts
XXXX bet - $3.60
taddavies called - $3.60
XXXX shows: 9 of Hearts, Jack of Diamonds
taddavies mucks:
XXXX wins $13.70 from the main pot
End of game 840191582

As you can see I hit a straight and won the pot. He then told me it was a terrible call on the turn so I just said "ty" :D. Whatever he had - Ax, 2 pair - whilst I might not have been getting great odds if he had 2 pair, I had a v large stack (max buy in $20 and I had $60+) and enough interest to see the river - his min raise was never going to force a fold

It's impossible to make "plays" on people at $10 tables. They don't grasp any sort of pot odds or they're the great readers in the world :D

You certainly have to pick your moments carefully if you're going to try and make plays at the lower levels.

Been playing $30 cash tables recently and have noticed a few are a bit more willing to lay a hand down. Still plenty who are happy getting all the money in with top pair though, god love 'em.

One thing that has helped my winrate a bit is slowing down on the continuation bets as they get called so much at these levels, I'm being a lot more selective, only cbetting credible flops and trying not to bluff multiple opponents - all pretty basic stuff but it helps. Worth saving the naked aggression for higher levels I think.

Got to clock up another 155 player points on Laddies tonight to qualify for 20% rakeback - should be a welcome $70 or so added to the roll! Never played enough in 1 month before to qualify!

All this talk about PokerTracker on the last page or so prompted me to have a bit of a detailed look at my statistics and I noticed something a little odd. I have kept a database since July 2007 so have loads of hands stored. Anyway, for $40NL I am in profit and the same in $200NL but $100NL I am at a loss. It should be noted that in each of these catagories I have played 20000+ hands so it isn't a case of a small sample size. I find it a bit baffling that I have profitted at $200NL which should in theory be more difficult than $100NL.

Does anybody who has experience at the limits I mention notice any stand-out differences regarding $100NL compared to other limits?

You could try running the free PokerEV from http://www.pokerevsoftware.com/ - personally I've found that 20K is still not enough hands to escape variance and get an accurate idea of winrate - a few coinflips going against you can demolish your winrate over even a 20K sample. You might find that you're running well at 200NL and horribly at 100NL

Didn't Sam mention about finding the $0.50/$1 (which I think is $100 tables) level harder? My theory on that might be that it is the kind of minimum level you see for a lot of bonuses. Bonuses attract fish, which in turn attract sharks. Just a theory, I'm not saying it is right by any means.
