Was in a 450 people competition yesterday, $2 buy in found myself in last 6, chip leader with $54K, five minute recess pushed blinds up to $15K, thought would get at least 4th, two were on $14K but won both their big blinds, and I was out after about another six hands, won $40, but 1st prize was $200 which was slightly annoying. Bit of an anti-climax.

keep going down in finishes to tournaments,

$4 buy in made final 10 (out of 500) top stacked with $60K, a couple of bad plays and down to $50K, then hemmoraged $30K being done by a pair of aces on the turn and the river! then not much later all out, disappointing as two other players had small stacks. Bottled out when possibility of straight to save for big blinds and nothing came out, 6th paid $75, 1st was $375, getting there though.

I am really rather f*cked off.
Haven't played a tourney for about 2 months, so enter a £10 multi...determined to finish in the money.
Doing really well, sitting in 15 out of the original 160+, only about 30 people left, betting at a straight draw, hit, all-in, called by a f*cking flush draw...FOR ALL HIS F*CKING CHIPS, and he hits it.
Not a lot of money to lose, and have had worse suck-outs than that, but I'm in such a crap mood anyway I just felt I needed to let off some steam.

Did he make the bet on the flop or after the turn? What were his pot odds? How big was his stack in relation to the blinds? How many players were to play after him?

Unlucky, btw.

Let me try to remember.

Can't remember the action, I think he bet, I raised, he re-raised all in, and I called ( all on the turn ). You could argue he was trying a bluff, but I think there was a raise and a bet pre and post flop, so he must have known he couldn't raise me out of it.
Blinds were either 150/300 or 300/600.
We both had about 5500, but chip leader was only on about 10,000 and there were a lot of close stacks in the top 15.
Just me and him in the pot.

Yup, he went out on a limb and got lucky. He's got just under a 1 in 5 chance of hitting, and the pot is offering nowehere near those odds.

Final table crapshoot madness.

Very Phil Hellmuth, I like it. :p

Was watching highlights of this year's WSOP at the Rio. Phil gets done harshly on the river. Phil stands up, walks away and shouts to the crows, "This guy can't even spell poker!"

Classic stuff.

I think I had the 2nd worst beat I've ever heard about the other night. 2nd or 3rd hand of a sit'n'go. I had Ah Qh in the big blind and there was a raise from middle position to about 3x the pot. There was a caller right behind him and everyone folds to me, and I call. Flop is Qs Th 3h, so I have top pair and nut flush draw. I put out a little feeler bet of 1/2 the pot. Get raised double my bet by pre-flop raiser and guy behind calls again. Now the pot is up to about $600 or so and I have about $800 left. I decide that the raiser has AK and caller has a mid-pair hoping to get a set. I figure that my worst case scenario is AA or KK, but I figure that with KK I still have plenty of outs with my flush. So I basically try to end it and go all-in for the rest of the $800, original raiser folds and the original caller calls again. Hmm, could he have a straight draw? Smaller flush draw? Already hit his set? Nope, he turns over Ac 7d. WTF? Well, I'm getting paid. He has to hit runner-runner black 7, the 7h would make my flush. Sure enough, runner-runner black sevens. Unbelievable. I went to look up what exactly his odds were, but ya'll could probably guess:

http://twodimes.net/poker/?g=h&b=Qs+Th+3h&d=&h=Ah+Qh%0D%0AAc+7d

Since then, I've been totally out of whack and haven't been able to get back in the groove. 9 SnG's since and only gotten one 2nd and one 3rd.

That sound slike a fairer beat though, tobe honest, depending on stage in tourney, position etc. Lots of reasons not to raise all in with that for you.

I have just got the Harrington NL tournament poker for advanced players which people swear by, so will try out the strategies and report back ;)

That's about as bad as you can conceive.

I lost about a year ago with an ace high flush to the straight flush, and have also lost with the lower quads, but in those cases the guys had made the hands by the time the big bucks went in.

I've also lost with nut flush to straight flush ( it wasn't an obvious straight flush either, so I was pretty shocked ), but never lost with quads...yet - I'm sure I will one day.

Micky Droy
10-11-2005, 11:25 PM
ouch, saul, ouch.

the thing with quads i think is to try and induce a bluff raise, unless there's eg. an ace out there someone has hit and your quads are low. But yes, often fruitless.

Anyway, I bust out tonight, 44 against 22 in the hole. The Fates...

Hour and 20 minutes into $4 buy in down to last 40, $6K on the table, hadn't played a hand for a while, get KA, nothing at all on the flop or turn and then get beat by a pair of Jacks on the river, a lot of time for a $3 profit!

Just got done in a tournament, $4000 in my hand, not a bad hand played all game in (45 minutes). Get AK, raise $1500 which knocks everyone out apart from one person, who is top stacked with 16K, calls me all in, so I think unlikely to have a top pair so go all in, nothing turns up on flop, turn or river and he beats me on a pair of sixes, who goes $5K in on a pair of sixes, was nicely positioned as well for at least a place on the leaderboard, only consolation $1 buy in. Did I do anything wrong.

Usually I check AK or even AA KK QQ JJ to see if anything comes flop, don't think I did anything wrong or should I have folded with his raise?

I generally won't call an all-in raise with AK, but it is certainly condition dependant ( blinds, type of player, where you were currently placed etc ). At the end of the day, you are calling with all your chips, with no actual hand, just a hand with good potential. 22 is favourite ( although only just ), against AK post flop.
If I'm short stacked I will nearly always go all-in with AK, even if there is a lot of action - you can't rely on getting anything much better within a few hands. If I have position I may raise all-in, but once again it is position dependant. Big difference between raising all-in and calling all-in, you want to be certain your leading with a call, whereas with an all-in raise it puts the pressure on the other player.

Just my opinion.

Yes, that is nothing.

Was involved in a game on the weekend where after a flop of 8h2dKc the short stack went all in on KdJh (pair of Kings). Chip leader calls with 35 offsuit.

Turn - 3
River - 5

Ouch.

got done again two pair only two in pot nothing on flop, get called all in by 9 high, 9 comes on turn, 9 comes on river!

You need to make a habit out of raising big hands instead of limping. you are just asking for trouble.

Agree. I will sometimes check if in early position ( once again depending on who I'm playing ), but in late position I will alwyas raise if no-one else has, if someone else has raised I may call depending how big the raise is and who I am up against, or a re-raise may be in order.

Agreed, I often find checking in early position on a big hand useful particularly if there are aggressive players around.

Everybody who plays knows that bad beats are part of the game, but these 2 situations defy belief. How on earth can the players, who ultimately won each pot, justify calling all-ins? Especially an $800 all-in, post flop, when not even having a pair or a flush or straight draw?
Computer generated opponents perhaps? I think I'd go & play elsewhere!

saul1664

sure i was playing bots or some form of collusion yesterday, 5 player game, 1 goes out 4 left, quite short stacked with a few other players, every time the blinds go around big stacked player will call in with the short stacked player and then fold time after time so the short stacked player always has more than me, this went on for about 30 hands before I finally got ousted out. Only a $20 5 player table, but felt like collusion or something worse.

If you're shit, yes.

Odds and skill play no part in the game. You have to learn how the site works to stand a chance of winning.

Basically, they want to help crap players and raise the rake, so unbelievable things happen constantly.

ie Just raised with 66 against one opponent, who called. Flop comes 9 4 4 . I raise and raise, etc... and he has 4 9 in the hole.....

And don't even think about staying in with AA

88.50% win rate on PokerStars with AA. Lost 5 times out of 5 with it on PP.....

A warning about Pacific Poker - $300 has vanished form my account - they had problems on Saturday. I got a support email asking for details etc which I have been able to gather, but their support mail box is full so I can;t communicate with them. If they;re dealing with a big backlog of claims and their support is effectively down it might be an idea to be cautious about playing on there for a few days.

I am nervous as I also have $1100 waiting to be cashed out in their system. They better not go belly up on me now.

Pacific Poker haven't died, they are far too big for that, however their money system does have problems. Deposited £50, said didn't go through, so tried again, that £50 went through, then ten minutes later the other £50 went through despite it saying it had declined it. Have never cashed out there so don't know what it's like.

It might be an idea to put the start time back? There is nearly always some form of football on the tv on a Wednesday night, which often stops me joining you. And probably others too. Benfica v Man Utd this week, is compulsory viewing for me. Make the start time 9.45, instead of 8.45 & I'm there!

If they;re dealing with a big backlog of claims and their support is effectively down it might be an idea to be cautious about playing on there for a few days.

I am nervous as I also have $1100 waiting to be cashed out in their system. They better not go belly up on me now.

I've had Pacific do that twice on me but they always refund any 'lost' money. They just need time to check their logs once their system comes back.

Have just been 'reminded' I have a departmental meal tonight straight after work, so it's gonna be tight on whether or not I can get back in time for a game.
If there's enough people playing, I should at least be able to make the second game.

pacific gave me the money back.

meanwhile i came out second out of 335 at laddies and pocketed $1500!

i play on pokerroom sometimes.

It's a good point about the football. I'm going to watch it too. Do we think most people playing tonight would be happier with a 9.45 start?
