Well I would say that given the size of his stack he might have been trying to buy it so not only did you have a good chance of the heart but also your AJ might well have been good enough

That's very standard. The check raise from the BB is abysmal. Shover isn't keen for a call so you can put him on an over pair. Your ace is almost always good. With the additional donation from the BB this is an easy call.

Always nice to get abuse for standard plays, generally means your playing against idjuts with high tilt tendencies.

I don't think you've caused offence, well not to me anyway.

People voice their concerns because you are a ' shit or bust ' gambler, you seem drawn to the big gamble = potentially big return situations.

Poker like sports betting is something where you have to grind out money usually trying to work the odds in your favour when you can.
This is the only proven way of making money consistently, sure you might get lucky and get some good returns by gambling but this will always even itself out over time.

You will go bust at some point with your attitude towards gambling . That is a fact, the only question is when not if.

Losing a lot of money hurts. A lot. Save yourself from feeling that pain and become a smart gambler.

Sorry if that came across like I was preaching, it wasn't meant that way.

Good luck anyway.

Posting from Rio. Was the last one to bust out of day one after being completely card dead all day. Was up and down like a yoyo between 5k and 15k but couldnt seem to move on up. Didnt pick up AA or KK in 8 hours which was pretty frustrating. Amazing atmosphere about the place and lots of pro's dotted about. Just watchd the FT and saw some 20 year old take down the $220k I wished would be mine. Any hows I will post a proper report on my return.

PS, What did the other guy have Oz?

Unlucky on your tourney.

SB flips over TT for flopped quads.

The look on the other blokes face was quite amusing and lasted about 15 minutes. Sort of unlucky to fire a fluff and then hit the turn and the river for the second nuts.

Amazingly about an hour later another bloke flopped quad tens but couldn't get any action and took in a $20 pot.

Played the Sky Poker £8k Super Sunday. 605 runners and I came in 26th for a grand total of £60. Was 2nd at one stage but made a few moves that failed.

Anyway, this was my first Sky Poker open so it was nice to cash.

A friend of mine won a seat in the WSOP main event over the weekend. Started off in the $7 re-buy and re-bought once. Won that to get in the $60 rebuy, didn't re-buy once and won into the $500 sat. 80 runners top 2 got seat, expenses etc, he finished in top 2! Crazy...gets a seat, $2750 for flights and expenses, 10 nights in the Golden Nugget hotel and has to wear all the VC poker gear. Lucky begger!!

& for just $14!!

Had a manic last week and haven't been on the forum. When I log on I see IAM playing £2/£5 after being told that he WILL be bust V soon and EVERYONE on this site telling him to move down. He promises he'll only play $100nl then I see he's doing thousands in a casino on roulette/blackjack.

Genuinely I think you have a gambling problem/issue and you should sort it before it gets even worse. Seriously, I have seen people get addicted to gambling and it's not a pretty site, seriously, just take this bit of advice from me and at least look into a gambling group etc......

Good to see a bit of success since I've been away. Haven't played NLH for a while instead only 4o to varied success!

Am I right in saying the sik WSOP qualifying satellite is now NOT running on Everest?! :(

I think you need to be re-raising bigger pre-flop there - you want to be heads up with JJ surely and that raise isn't getting rid of people at these limits most of the time. Once they all come along for the ride I'm not sure I'm even betting into that flop with an overcard out there

The last time I looked a couple of days after they realised the error it was still running and I was still registered. I'll check again later when I fire laptop up - havent got EP on the desktop. I understood they had just closed it to new freerollers unless you have heard different?

Given the statement Inside Poker issued saying that Everest had admitted it was always supposed to be limited entries to freerollers but had omitted to tell them that I don't see any reason for them to pull it altogether? they have just established the position of limiting their liabilities to that which they originally intended.

tbh, I don't think I really mind this line... imo, your getting called by a fair amount of hands.... Ax, KQ, 2 hearts etc obv.

I don't know how villains been playing here, but the river card is a super card for you if they've hit their draw but more often than not at 50nl they will bet out heavy here. Due to this I'm probably just under potting the river unless villains tilty/you have a read. Answer?! :)

06-05-2008, 11:16 PM
I didn't have him on a flush draw because the turn bet didn't particularly make sense. KQ and Ax was what I put him on so I think he was check calling a river bet rather than c/ring.

The shove from me looked pretty fishy so I thought he'd still look me up with those hands. He flipped over A9

Semibluff half the pot is pretty standard for a draw to the nut flush IMHO. But then I do like to play my draws fast - there's nothing quite as upsetting as rivering the nut flush when there's $2.50 in the pot!

Still doing well in cash games now, seem to have got my mojo back. First tourney for a long time, won't be playing many tourneys as haven't the time, cashed, but felt should have done a lot better. Played a big hand when KK ran into KA and the ubiquitous A fell on the turn, got back up to 20K, got a feeling I should have played this hand, would have made the call against 1, but against two?

Its offical - I am a donkey.

OPR ranking has slipped from a high of 81 to 68,000

I seem to be on a downswing!

(which, as I had pairs cracked by underpairs when all-in 4 times out of 5 yesterday, is hardly surprising!)

You will see me in a high street near you, carrying several copies of the Big Issue, shortly...I may even go bust before Ant!!

yeah, rankings done on rolling 120 day period so not a problem. I have to keep reminding myself of the "real" bankroll I have as opposed to the one that I have actually still on the site! That was up to 20k but is now sitting at about 12k - psychologically its hard not to focus on the fact that it nearly 50% down in 8 weeks and heading back towards 4 figures!

I've said it before but I do suffer from serious self confidence issues (not just in poker) and so the very high MTT variance causes me problems in this sense. Previously a biggish win has always appeared around this time in a downswing but at the moment I am not even getting close to a cash let alone a final table!

On the upside I have cheap satellited entries into FTOPS 4 and 9 coming up and I havent really started working on the higher buy in ones yet so potential for some reasonable returns soon

Oh and of course I have my $5 trip to the WSOP ME event courtesy of Everest to come :D

It was a six man event yesterday. I couldnt even begin to follow anyone as it was moving so quickly.

They seem to be starting these late so not suprised you are only in a few at the moment.

Good luck with more satellites

I have been watching quite a lot lately.

I notice that you are either not chipping up early and so end up as a short stack in the middle of a tournament when its more or less push or fold or you build up a decent stack and then donk it off (dont mean that you actually donk it off everytime as ive seen some beauties of coolers particularly AA vs KK) to finish around the money bubble.

Just need to catch a couple of breaks and then you will move up the placings. If you want me to have a look at anything like HH let me know as ive got plenty of time. :p

You're noticing correctly! I was thinking last night that I haven't hit an early set/overpair in dozens of tournaments to get chipped up. And I seem to be running into AA an unbelievable high proportion of the time at the moment I decide to make a move!

On HHs - I am meaning to sit down with Poker Tracker soon and drag off a whole series of hands that either bust or crippled me - you will be welcome to them!! In fact I am thinking about taking a week off for "revision" - analyze Poker Tracker, watch some videos, do some Harrington workbook etc, . It never seems like a more appealing idea than actually playing though !

The Lobby of the Hotel was such a classic on the Sunday evening at the LAPT.
Probably about 50 people chilling with there laptops supporting eachother in the big sunday events. One guy took down the $200rebuy while about 40 people railed!
Chatted through some of the plays made with some of the big online pro's. kidpokerjd, ronasty and texpert (won the $5000 winner takes all event 2 weeks ago)
Such a sick lifestyle touring together to the big events etc.

Nice one LM

I appeared, vv briefly and not in person, on Sky Sports 2 last night. Entered the Sky Five-0 for a laugh as I thought it might be interesting to see my play analyzed on the tv and also to see if I could take advantage of seeing opponents play on the tv (its on about a 10 minute delay from what I could tell but it does mean that you can get really good reads if you can take notes while watching and playing)

So my table appeared for precisely 1 hand when I folded AT off to a utg raise by what turned out to be 99. My fold wasnt even referred to :D

Went out in about 21st of 50 entries (its a £100+10 for £5k guarantee, 7 min levels). I may play it again though as the standard was pretty awful - I just got unlucky as per!

PS I deliberately didnt advertise my entry on here - no way I was appearing to the nation and going out on a donk play in front of you lot! I thought I would wait until i hit the final table before declaring my live tv debut lol!!

It's great fun. I played the open on Sunday night and had my table on the TV once. I folded just like you!

Did get a mention 3 times though as I was 3rd at one point.

1.2k, Final table was a joke though. Lost with QQ to 99 all in then 10,10 to 88. Make my way back up again with some steals and re raise steals then loose Ak to 55 then shove the rest of my chips with A9 and loose to K10! So frustrating, I wasnt the only one. If you play the Open all the tables are 6 man. I played the 8K Super Sunday and finished 26th out of 605 and I'm nowhere near as good as you guys. There's money to be made.

They are also holding a 5k live event in Brighton. It's £55 to register and is on Saturday 7th June. 140 runners. I'm hoping to be there.

cant find the FTOPs hand but basically I limped early with AA
button called
big blind checked - with what turned out to be KK !

flop was dry - I bet, he raised, I re-raised and he (no doubt congratulating himself on how clever he had been) shoved the rest in!

How I laughed (after the river of course!)

That hand just highights the problem of playing above your roll. It's a terrible fold, I'm shoving that all day long - but when you're sitting with $3k in front of you, you can't make the right play because it matters too much if you get stacked!

I hope you manage to stop playing nosebleed limits before you go busto, I really do. Even if you could limit yourself to never playing with more than 10% of your roll on the table, that would give you a much better chance of not going bust! Imagine if the guy in the first hand had turned over an 8 or pocket Queens - over a grand down the tubes in one hand - how would you have felt?

Bubbled the 100K on Stars, got up to 7K quite early but every time I made a move ended up with all-in situations with short stacks who outdrew me each time. KK<99 and QQ <47 offsuit, so when I shove with Q7 for my remaining few chips, the only call is 10 2 which hits the 10 on the turn. :moo:

and richie G you might be shoving that hand all day long but honestly it werent even the amount of money that prevented me from going all in it was the fact the min re raise showed massive strength i thought he made trips if not had a made straight or 10 9 for the top pair and straight draw in any of those situations i don't wanna be putting a lot of money at risk, so while i haven't invested heavily im getting out. I dunno what others might think but my instincts told me to fold and thats exactly what i did. No way was that a bad play and btw, my bankroll has rose and done nothing but recently so my bankroll management skills are great. I just have a punt now and again, for a bit of excitement. Punt that won't dent my profits too much as i am making £300+ a day

Your bankroll management is awful.Just because you are on a heater and doing well doesnt make it any good.

only thing i can fault you for here is not putting all your chips in on the turn when there are three cards to a straight. He would have still called but that's the only problem i see. well played otherwise and unlucky.

And chester i havent heard of heaters last 3 whole weeks im just playing well and the sngs i am playing are so fishy i look to make at least £100 and on a good day £300 a day. I disagree and will say my bankroll management is spot on as im playing most games where i have 100 big blinds. But i do go for the occassional punt and this is where people all of a sudden think im a loony and that my bankroll management is crap. when really i can accomodate for a loss when i do punt. but tbh i think ure all right, i will get the message when i do lose at the limits i played today, i will still have plenty of profit however tho. And the £100-£300 a day is what i have been earning straight for 25 days, that can't be a heater.

Are you serious?

I *COULD* sit in a 25/50 game with 100 big blinds no problem, why does how many BB's come into it?! How much do you sit with at a table and what do you mean 'have a punt'? Is that when you play £2k nl?

Anyway, like many others have said, you won't listen to I won't preach but I promise you I've seen a LOT of people go bust in your situation

iamanuplander
12-05-2008, 09:22 AM
Fair enough. How many big blinds are you supposed to be playing with to be comfortable and careful. I have read that 40 BB is about right when before i have heard 100 BB is. What im changing now is the size of my "punt" going in with $2K was ridiculous. my punting range will now be $2/$5 but to be fair im not far off playing that limit comfortably anyway so thts my punt now. So tht topic shud be over now :)

Hows your game been getting on anyway STOG haven't heard much about it?

SamTheOldGoat
12-05-2008, 09:58 AM
I'm not sure what you're talking about BB? If you mean Buy ins, yes, 40 is generally a 'safe' number. Therefore to be playing £2k nl you should have £80k roll. If you're roll is $18k like you've suggested before, I'd say playing $2/5 is OK. You have 36 buy ins and I'd definitely be feeling comfortable with that, a hell of a difference to £2k!

I'm sure you'v eread the Fox article on Bankroll Management as it's been posted many times but it's a good guide.

My pokers fine. Hardly played recently due to busyness of football, gym, wedding etc but played some 1/2 PLO over the weekend. Re-reading the HOH series' to try and get me back into Holdem', which has not interested me recently!

it was $2K i was sitting with so half of what u thought but still yeh im avoiding them now i might spill into the $1K regions but im going to try and avoid it. I have never been able to play Omaha myself always dismissed it as too unpredictable, as in with so many concealed cards u basically need the nuts to be sure ure ahead surely?

SamTheOldGoat
12-05-2008, 10:12 AM
Most of the time, yes, much higher variance, that's for sure. Will probably get back into NLHE quickly though. The variance is a killer!

OK last try.

Mate, you really need to understand variance. If you've been winning every day for 25 days you HAVE been getting lucky. I'm not saying you aren't playing well, but every time anyone wins a hand, they are getting lucky. Likewise every time somone loses a hand, they get unlucky. Your true expectation lies somewhere between the two - whether you win or lose a hand you almost never win exactly what you 'should have won' if luck wasn't a factor.

A while ago I posted a graph of my results and I remember you commented something like 'A lot of up and down at the start but at the end it looks like you worked out how to play'! This comment demonstrates you do not fully understand the nature of variance - that you can play consistently brilliantly and lose, or play consistently terribly and wipe the floor with people for sustained periods. There are top top pros who play 100k hands a month, consistently make good decisions and have losing months - this is variance in action. The top pros can't escape it and nor can any of us.

PS Sam I think Ant was playing £2/£5 not $2/$5 in which case he needs a bankroll of £18k or $36k

iamanuplander
12-05-2008, 10:34 AM
understood se1eagle and i hope u dnt think ure talking to a brick wall, but the games i have found are that fishy that i can look to be making over a £100 a day minimum, and i guess i will just have to prove it to you all over the next 6 months with my sharkscope rating. Ant040689 is the name and its on the cryptologic network and on the www.sharkscope.com website. i have been on a heater of late but i will prove tht £100 a day is more than reasonable but im looking to get £200-£300 sooner of later. That's obviously down to variance as well, but in the long run of things where i cud win £500 in one day and break even in the next two this is what i expect to make and hopefully i can substantiate this claim. All i want now is for you guys never to play sngs on cryptologic because i don't want it getting sharky all of a sudden!

Your sharkscope is very good Ant, there's no denying that and 10% ROI is great too. Be prepared for downswings though, my brother had a savage one and he plays for a living too. He plays cash though and not on this site but see his Stars 'graph' which is used for a while in 07. Obviously this isn't a huge sample but see around 900 SNG's the decline. I watched him play aroudn this time and as SE says no matter what he was in with he's lose. This is the 'luck' part!

PS, Listen to what SE says above. It's 100% accurate.

Just watching series 4 of High Stakes Poker, one great hand when Sammy Farha (very hard not to like) gets AA against Jamie Gold's (very hard to like) KK. If the money is genuine (think it probably would be...)then it's mental how much they're playing for
