I stood with two lovely ladies from NSC at the top corner of the Holmesdale and collected signatures for your petition. Got some flak for it too, including some Palace scum spitting at me and some on these boards saying I'm not fit to wear red and blue. Bollocks to them. There's only one team I want to go out of business - Manchester United (I hope Glazer franchises them out to New York or somewhere).
Yes, I hope you get Falmer ya seaweed bastad. I want to be among 3,000 Palace in the away end outsinging you lot as we thoroughly avenge last Tuesday. Enjoy the gloating while you can, our players owe us a backlash big time... :)
P.S. Lots of people signed the petition - more than I had expected, anyway.

I really hope that you get that new stadium as it's been a lottery gettong tickets at the Withdean - I want to return to the times when we took a few thousand and there was a bit of atmosphere.
Gosling
22-10-2005, 06:48 AM
Agreed, croftonglazier. I went to the Withdean last time and was seriously worried that the temporary stand we were on was going to collapse under the weight of us jumping up and down on it!
More to the point though, I am led to believe that the Withdean is a financial sinkhole for BHA and that the longer they stay there the more likely they are to go out of business. I don't want that to happen. What's the point of a rivalry without a rival?

I have already posted on Nsc that a legal source in the ODPM has told us the answer is YES. It will be announced on Monday or Tuesday.
Gosling I think you were terrific for looking after our two ladies that day.
All true football fans will rejoice at the news.
I want to see as many of you as possible at the new stadium hurling your abuse at us and us hurling it back (in the stands of course, I don't agree with violence) and cheering our respective teams onto victory.

That's really good news. You should be allowed to build a football ground in your backyard and we should be able to watch Palace play there. Simple as that. Also good effort Gosling.

get the stadium but i will be honest with you, It should nolt be down to other fans to help you get it. if you want and the rest of your fans want the ground you should all chip in and get a petition going between you. Dont rely on other sets of fans! ! ! would like to know i would get a ticket if we ever have to play you again after this year.

We've done the petition thing, and the Fans United grouping as well. Wrexham have just been awarded the freehold of their ground. I think that you need to remember that this can happen to any club, and whilst we have rivalries, I don't think it's a good thing that the property developers nip in under the radar and give themselves the ability to destroy a club completely. We were lucky to survive at all after Bellotti (who is now doing the same thing in his current job, and catching crap as well!) - whilst Jordan is a fan, he is also businessman. Look at the chairman of Darlington - doing time for fraud related to his additional business activities, and he almost killed the club as well!

dodge- i think that they did get a petition from their fans, but why not other fans? Lots of other fans have been through the same situation.
What's the point in getting a 30000 petition from Brighton fans when you could get a 500000 petition from football fans.

elliott made my point already, d_b. I signed the Wrexham petition as well.
As far as those two ladies who came up from Brighton to collect signatures at Selhurst are concerned, I just tried to put myself in their shoes. Would I have the nerve to go and stand outside the Withdean wearing red and blue trying to get signatures on a petition for a new stadium for Palace? Perhaps when the lease runs out?? (there but for the grace of God go I...)
I'm really not sure I would, and to be honest I was nervous even doing that at Selhurst. The mere fact they were coming up to the mecca of English football was enough to convince me they were desperate for support from all football fans and the conversation I had with them both was enough to persuade me that the club was in a life or death situation with regard to Falmer. If the situation ever arose when somebody needed to do it, I would hope to be able to get back in touch with a few fellow FANS and get back from the south coast alive with a few signatures in support of Palace in our hour of need.

Matty you are an idiot.
My husband and I went to Rotherham that same day. Brighton fans went to different matches all over the country as we weren't in the next round of the FA cup. We wrote to Rotherham and asked permission to go in the Tivoli (home end) and get signatures. They were playing Bradford that day.
Rotherham were great and the stewards looked after us very well. It could have been nasty because they hate Wednesday (also wearing blue and white stripes) and one or two thought we were Owls at first.
Most people were very supportive and I'm pleased to say that the Millers have also got permission for a new stand themselves now.
If Palace had the same problem I wouldn't hesitate to help out.
I want my team to take all 6 points off you this season and I enjoy the bragging rights to a win away at your place but when it comes to clubs going out of business because of greedy directors (and some players) then fans (of whatever persuasion) come first.
Fans are what make a club. Managers, players and directors come and go but fans are for ever.

There was also a list of the last 10 games between the two teams where Palace had 5 wins at home, drawn 3 and lost 2.

I was anti Falmer before as after you're abject performance on the 26/10/02 I didn't care if the rivalry died or not. I thought the rivalry had had it's day and that the clubs were so far apart that pissing off quietly to non league was the only honourable solution for you. You were just a poor pub team with irritating fans and I thought the Withdean was perfect for you.
However, after Tuesday I've changed my mind. The defeat hurt but it has completely renewed our rivalry in my eyes. I hate you more than ever and as I left Selhurst the first thing I said was that I HAD to go to the Withdean. However, getting a ticket is a lottery and as a stadium it is so devoid of atmosphere that it is not a suitable venue for such an intense rivalry. Therefore, good luck with Falmer. If only so that as many Palace get to experience what you felt on Tuesday as possible.

8. FINANCIAL RISKS
Section6 105. A project of this size, particularly for a third division club, carries very high financial risks and it remains to be seen whether BHA could even raise the money the construction of a stadium.
Then running a 22,300 seat stadium long term without losing money carries even more risk as some football clubs with new stadiums are finding, e.g. Reading FC, in the second division, with a 22,300 seat stadium, are losing £2m - £3 million a year. This stadium is also designed for seven days a week, mixed events use.
BHA, with no assets of its own anticipates a management or partners group to take overall financial responsibility. The suggested partners so far B&H Council and the Universities would be risking tax payers money on a long term, high risk project, when there are many more pressing social and educational needs. A stadium could easily become Brighton & Hoves own Millennium Dome disaster.
On the unbiased (LOL) falmer village site I saw this.
What are the facts with regard finance etc.
Impartial if possible.

As Doris Day once said, Che sara, sara, whatever will be....etc.
In a perfect world, Charlton can stay at The Valley, Southampton can stay at The Dell and as for Leeds United, they can go to hell.
But it's not a perfect world, is it? Brighton are in it, so that's a big minus to start with. In the grand scheme of things, Crystal Palace FC were put on this earth to play in a 110,000 capacity stadium (that's a fact, not a dream) and play in the Football League from their very first season. However, fate decreed, by one lousy stinking vote, that Chelsea and Clapton Orient would do that instead.
I could go on, in fact I will, Stamford Bridge was built before there was a Chelsea Football Club and Fulham FC were invited to play there, but declined, so Chelsea were formed to do so! We all know that Arsenal started in Woolwich and Millwall in the Isle of Dogs and Charlton played park football for their first 15 years.
So whatever happens to Brighton, they won't be playing in Hove ever again, a part of them is LONG DEAD. RIP Goldstone. In fact, the whole football world is far removed from what it was. No more Kop, Stretford End, North Bank, Shed, Shelf, C.B.L, Chicken Run, Roker Roar, Baseball Ground, Filbert Street etc etc etc.
I imagine Brighton will get Falmer, but big deal. Tell it to fans of teams like Northwich Victoria, Merthyr Town, Accrington Stanley (who are dey?), Southport, Barrow, Workington, Aldershot, Newport County etc etc etc. In a perfect world, they would have a Coca Coal Championship team to follow, but it's not a perfect world. Che sara, sara.....

Sports grants (especially with the Olympics looming) Lotter money, and a mortgage.
The break even figure is 12K-15K attendances.
Reading losing money? Really? We are losing a Million a season with attendances of 6800 and having to pay rent on our 'facilities' to the council.

Hopefully you will get something as the world would be a poorer place without you as our rivals plus we would be inundated with Charlton fans trying to fill the void.
Are you in the Cov position ? I understand that they need 23,000 every home game to just break even at the Ricoh- do yo have a break even etc.. for wherever you end up ?
What happens if you go down this year even if fattie gives you the thumbs up ? Does it effect the size of the ground etc.. etc..

Not having a dig - genuinely interested...although obviously it will probably be a good deal of time before I have to go down there to watch Palace play you.
We have been able to keep the reins on spending to a certain degree by bringing through youth players (sold two in the summer for over 2 million) and getting end of career players like Butters and Dodd. Some of our players are on pocket money compared to other Championship players.
We have a fit squad of about 15 players in total.
Break even figure we reckon is 12K-15K and no the league we are in doesn't affect the size or capacity of the stadium. We have applied for a 22K seater and will build that.

Yes. Palace's last appearance in the FA Cup 2nd Rnd took place in 1976.
Wonder if you can guess who we played? It was nearly 30 years ago though, so you may have to look it up. By the way, when did Brighton last feature in the first two rounds? ;)

That apart, hope that things go well in respect of Falmer. AS others have said, would be a sad day if Brighton went out of business (as it would almost any club), and given the importance of the new ground for your very survival, I hope you get it. Especially after you've fought for it for so long.

Of course the stadium should help you to bring in more money and get you towards the right end of the championship.

From the Argus
Are you ready for Prescott's decision on stadium?
Tension is mounting with only three working days left in which John Prescott can make his final decision on Falmer.
Will it be today? Will it be tomorrow?
Or will the Deputy Prime Minister torment Albion fans by taking his deadline down to the wire and announcing his decision on Monday?
Albion chief executive Martin Perry confirmed yesterday the club has no idea what the Government is planning, despite manager Mark McGhee saying he expected an announcement tomorrow.
He said: "We have been on to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and all they have said to us is that it will be at the end of the month - and they certainly haven't told us what's in it.
"I am afraid we have to take each day as it comes."

Brighton have been granted planning permission for a new stadium at Falmer following a public inquiry.
The Seagulls have been without a home since the Goldstone Ground was sold by previous owners in 1997.
They have been playing at the ill-suited Withdean, a 6,500-capacity athletics stadium, since 1999 following a spell groundsharing at Gillingham.

Stadium Yes!
By Tim Dudding
Albion fans this morning received the news they had been dreaming of for seven long years: Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has granted permission for the club to build a new stadium at Falmer!
The 33-page letter from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, which was sent to all the interested parties, confirmed that the club could proceed with its plans for the 23,000 all-seater stadium at Village Way North.
Crucially all four of the club's applications - The stadium itself, the coach and bus drop-off, the widening of Village Way within the Brighton boundary, and the widening of Village Way within the Lewes boundary - were successful.
Shortly after receiving the news, Albion chief-executive Martin Perry told Seagulls World that the seven-year long battle had been worth it just to receive this morning's jubilant news.
"A day like today is fantastic isn't it? I feel very emotional at the moment that it has finally happened.
"I love this club as much as all of the fans love this club. It means so much to me personally, and it means so much to this club.
"It's brilliant news. This club has changed today for good."
Perry and the club can now begin in earnest to secure finance for the project , and confirmed that the club is targeting the start of the 2008/09 season for the stadium to be finished.
Oh yeah, read. :afro:

Here's the news story for you all http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/southern_counties/4319026.stm
Brighton and Hove Albion have been given permission to build a 23,000-seat stadium in the village of Falmer.
They first applied for permission to build the ground in 2001 and have been waiting since then for a decision.
Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott ruled on Friday the stadium could be built at Falmer, just outside the city.
Brighton have been playing home games at Withdean, an athletics stadium in the city, since 1999 and their last permanent home was sold off in 1997.
The club and their fans have been desperate for permission to build the new stadium, arguing that by having to play home games at Withdean, with a capacity of about 7,000, they are missing out on huge amounts of ticket revenue.
On-pitch success
Brighton and Hove City Council has backed the scheme, as have the city's MPs.
But some Falmer residents objected strongly to having a stadium built in their village. Neighbouring Lewes District Council was also not keen on the idea.
Brighton currently play home games at 7,000-seater Withdean Stadium
The saga began in 1997, when the club's former chairman sold the Goldstone Ground, the Seagulls' home for almost a century.
The ground was demolished and is now the site of a retail park.
Brighton played home games 75 miles away in Gillingham for two years before moving to the Withdean.
The team have enjoyed success on the pitch, enjoying back to back promotions in 2001 and 2002 and, after being relegated in 2003, they were promoted back into the Championship via the play-offs in 2004.
The club took about 30,000 fans to the play-off final in Cardiff, which chairman Dick Knight has cited as proof the club needs a stadium which can hold far more than 7,000 supporters.
The public inquiry into whether the ground could be built opened in February 2003 and did not finally close until earlier this year.
Interviewed in Brighton by the BBC at the Labour Party Conference in September 2004, Prime Minister Tony Blair admitted the process had taken too long.
Congrats to you all.
James

Good news for football overall although tinged with some ambivalence too. When is the new place likely to be built? I can see us going to the Prem, BFC back in div one or two and the chance to go down there being very low unless we get drawn in cups or friendly.
That's a thought, maybe we ought to offer to play the inaugural game there pre season or whatever.....

I know a lot of Brighton fans and my son has a lot of school friends who have resisted following the Chelsea's and Man U's of this world, I coach an under 9's team, many of who follow Brighton. I'm really pleased for them as so many parents want to take their kids to games but either can't get tickets or find the whole experience an anti climax in the sports arena. I organised a trip for the kids and took them to see Southampton v Villa last season, (Palace wouldn't offer me a special package, Southampton did) not one Saints fan amongst them but they enjoyed the whole experience, particularly the impressive stadium.
I enjoy friendly rivalry with a lot of people down here, so good luck to them, they will match our attendance figures with no trouble.
If anyone knows anybody at the Palace who can offer a package deal for 15-20 kids I would be grateful for the info.

Based on some of their away performances and results and this news about the stadium I think they'll survive, albeit finishing in the bottom third.
I don't think they would ever fill it on a regular basis, rather like us really, but I believe regular attendances of 15,000 plus can be expected.
Can see them filling it at first due to the novelty factor etc but it then depends how things go on the pitch.

Well as anyone knows we aren't exactly loaded lol. But all the money (somewhere around £2/3million) that we spent on the inquiry process will get paid back to the club. Then we'll apply for sports grant, money from the lottery etc. Then the rest will be either investors or a morgage in the name of a new company that will be set up to own Falmer. I've read that Stoke gave away naming rights for their stadium worth £10million over 10 years. So hopefully we can get an equal deal, if not better. All in all i'd hope that we'll have raised atleast a min of £20million of the £50million cost before any loans.

Not having a dig, but do you really reckon this? Stoke are a much bigger club, with supporters clubs all over the country, and also a lot of Scandanavian interest.

These guys are tossers - only one of them attended the match, the rest are sad old midlife crisis hoolies who deserve to get butt-ed in the showers. They are an embarassment, and we are glad they were nicked. As someone on our board said, it would make it a better month if we also got the idiots who started at your end.
On the telly one of the saddos threatened a camera man with "do you want to end up like a Leeds fan" - one of the others was 50ish, and kept his crash helmet on to avoid being filmed - forgetting that his post-arrest mugshot was on telly anyway.
They are scumbags, they are an embarassment, and we can do without sad old hoolies like this in the game.

My reason for thinking we should get an equal deal is purely because of the exposure the company will get. It has been a long hard fought 8 years getting the stadium, and it has had nationwide coverage. I'm sure there will be plenty of bidders wanting to name the stadium that has kept us alive.

The new stadium is going to be within easy rail distance of Gatwick. The Olympic 2012 committee gave evidence at our public inquiry that it would be an ideal venue for an event or training facilities for a team.
The FA also said it could be used for Under 21 games.

Apparently we could end up with U-21 games (like we did at the Goldstone once or twice), and other sporting events. We even hosted some of the old Inter-Toto matches there for Wimbledon (I think it was).
Olympics 2012 events could be coming our way as well - give the athletes time away from the wastelands of South London.

"Contrary to popular belief, Brighton & Hove contains some of the most deprived areas in the country. For instance, five city estates make up the East Brighton New Deal for Communities area, a Government initiative to end social exclusion. These areas, which include Moulsecoomb (the nearest estate to the stadium site), have large numbers of residents on low incomes, high unemployment and high crime rates.
Brighton & Hove City Council regards the stadium at Village Way as a strategic priority because it will assist with these problems, helping to break the cycle of deprivation."

Who wants Seaweed ruining an area of ONB (that's outstanding natural beauty)?
Just bog off back to somewhere horrible in Hove... or maybe Peacehaven would make a good destination?
Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch... hope the process doesn't take 'too long'.... you still want to be in at least the Conference by the time you do get permission somewhere... less ONB.

I wouldn't get your hopes up; it's not certain that they will even get the chance to take this decision to judicial review and even if they do, all a judicial review does is examine the legality of the decision.
I very much doubt this is anything more than hot air from Lewes District Council.
I hope so anyway, I have no love for Brighton but it has been nothing short of disgraceful how difficult it has been for them to get a new stadium.

Copied and pasted
"The stadium's opponents have been threatening the Government with court
action for several years now, but they have several hurdles to overcome yet.
It's a comparatively cheap and easy procedure to apply for a preliminary
hearing in the High Court, but they have to convince a judge that they have
legitimate grounds to take the process further to a full hearing.
"Should they succeed then the potential cost of challenging the Government
will start to rocket. Having already spent more than £207,000 on the public
inquiry, I do hope that the district council will debate the commitment of
further considerable public resources openly and in front of their electors,
because I know there is a large majority of people within their area who
would resent such expenditure.
"And, in the unlikely event that they managed to show that the Government's
decision process was flawed, the judge could only require the Deputy Prime
Minister to reconsider his decision; he would not be required to reverse it,
so the stadium is still going to be built.
