not too sure weather this is the correct forum, but i wonder if anyone can help?
Everytime i try and load a game, a sign appears saying D:\ not accessible, the device is not ready. What does this mean and more importantly, Can anyone help me to fix this?
Thanks...

"D:/" usually refers to your CD-ROM drive. You can get this message if the CD-ROM is not properly installed.
Can you use other CD's in the computer?
What OS is it? (ie/ Win95 or 98 or Mac ?)

Oh I think I know what it is.
You're trying to play the game without the CD - when loading.. the game looks to the CDrom to check for the game CD. Its intended to stop people borrowing a friend's CD to install it and give it back.

I am using Windows 98, i am also playing with the CD, it's not just championship manager that won't run, nothing on the whole D:\ will not run.
I am suffering withdrawl symptoms from championship manager:grrr:

I'm not an expert on these things like others. But I can try.. It could be a driver problem - you may need to have your Win98 CD handy.
Try going to Start - Control Panel- click on System and then Device Manager and let us know what you see under CDROM..
What is the history? Did the computer come with it pre installed? Has it been working fine and suddenly packed up? Have you very recently installed any new software or hardware or upgrades? What type of CDROM is it?
I probably wont be able to help you much further (sorry) but other techies will probably need to know the answers to those..

It sounds like either your BIOS has lost your CD settings - or the cable inside the PC has come loose.

Under CD ROM is BCD E520C once i click on that, it says the Device IS working properly.
It was working well, then one day it just stopped working, came up with the error message, i've tried to fiddle about with it, but nothing happens.

Will that lose all of the Data on it?
How can that be done easily(minimum fuss?) i'm not exactly gifted with computers!

You wont lose any data - none is stored on the CD player but on the disc itself. I cant help any more other than saying it probably needs to be reinstalled. Time to call in a favor or buy some techie friend a pint..

Go to start/settings/control panel - click on the system icon.
Is the CD drive listed without an exclamation mark next to it ? - if you click on properties does it say "this device is working ok" ?
Does it read other CDROM disks if you put them in the drive ???

Steve, with my cash flow, they'll be waiting a long time for that pint!:)
Arussell, the Cd Rom controllers have an exclamation mark next to it, along with " Mitsumi CD ROM controller with double speed drive"
When i click on the CDRom it says "the device is working properly"
any ideas?

The CD ROM looks as if it recognises something, but it always comes up with D:\ not accessible, device is not ready. this applies to anything i put into the CDROM

Any more ideas people?

it might be because the cdrom drive is buggered (technical I know), this happened to me twice...some (newer) cdrom drives seem to have a problem with reading certain disks.
might be worth getting a new one, you can get then for about £30 these days I believe.

TopKnot, i'm not sure weather it's actually the CDROM drive and not the settings, however if i have to get it repaired by a qualified computer expert(or whatever!) it'll probably turn out cheaper to buy a new one.
Andover, i answer to your 3 questions
1: not a clicking noise but a noise implying it might be loading
2:the light does flicker
3:can't play any CD's at all, however it will still open and eject, even if i do it from the computer(and not manually)

CD Drive is knackered
You can buy a new one these days very cheaply indeed.
Can pick up a 52 speed one for about £25 from ebuyer.com
Perhaps you would be better going for a DVD or a CDRW which offers greater functionality at £40+ and £55+ respectively.
Give it a whack. Works every time.

So the general census is that it's totally kappered? anyway at all of fixing it now, internally, without A: having to call someone out to repair it. B: buy another one?

Try that first because a bit of dust on the lens can stop the cd working,i would 99% say that's what's wrong with it, or the ribbon from the motherboard/cd player has come out but not all the way.
9 times out of 10 if the cd is nacked then u get this loud clicking.
If what doesn't work then go to a computer fair and get a new one for about £25, check out this http://www.computer-fairs.co.uk/

You've all been a great help, thanks:p
One more question regarding the CD cleaner though. How can it get to work if the CD ROM drive doesn't load up any Cd's at all?
see i told you i wasn't very gifted with computers!

The drive is knackered mate, go buy another one, ebuyer has em for £25, a computer fair may indeed have em cheaper, dont pay over the odds from PC World.
Its a doddle to fit the new one, unscrew the four screws holding the current one in place, pop it out the front and then disconnect it from the ribbon cable. Attach the new ribbon cable (red stripe to the left) and then screw into place.
One minute job.

Anyway thanks everyone for your help:p
