anyone getting one? I might hold out for the US release in November...
Prices have been released for the JAP machine on import via NCSX.COM (who will be the cheapeest I imagine).
NCS' pre-order offer for the Japanese Nintendo Gamecube consists of the following bundle deal. Due to our distribution terms, this is the only package we can supply at the launch of the Gamecube console on September 13, 2001. Pre-orders are welcome by e-mail request.

I've been saving for mine for months. :)
It'll take a few pennies to buy Rogue Squadron, Luigi's Mansion, Extreme-G 3, Super Smash Bros Melee, Star Fox Adventures and all the other games I have to buy.
It's really quite sad, but I'm very excited indeed.

Not sure about Star Fox (it's actually called Dinosaur Planet no?). Was originally a 64 game and the footage I've seen was not much better than Zelda.
Star Wars, Mario Kart and Donkey Kong Racing (which has the best graphics I've ever seen) are what I'm after.........

Comments on a few points there...
I think we'll all have to get purple ones, at least at first, because I don't think other colours are coming until later.
The full title is Star Fox Adventures: Dinosaur Planet. I agree with Paf - I'm not overly impressed - you can certainly see its N64 origins. Hopefully Rare will keep working on it to take advantage of the GC's vastly improved graphics, especially regarding the polygon count. The characters look pretty shoddy at the minute.
The Donkey Kong Racing graphics you've seen (Paf) are actually pre-rendered and not in-game (although Rare have said that they tried to make it look as close to what the finished product will look like as they could. Here's hoping)
Look out for Rogue Squadron though, it looks incredible. :vader:
Finally, yes, I know, I'm a complete geek.

Probably will do, will wait until its been released here for a couple of months first so I can appraise it against the PS2. Trouble is I have a N64
with many games that I have barely played (good ones at that) and I don't put it on for months at a time. Thus my game playing enthusiasm probably doesn't justify £300.
In any case for plane and train journeys I will probably buy the Advance, anyone got one of these, what do you think?

Ahh the days of CS. Unfortunately I haven't been able to play said game for over a year now, since I lost my broadband link. However, should be getting it back soon...so watch out for me.
As for the GC, well, yes I'm buying one. But not until June next year probably, and even then I may import an American/Jap one so I can get the games early, and without any NTSC to PAL conversion problems.
Until then, the PS2 will have to do.

The Gamecube, Nintendo's new console, is expected to be released in Europe in the spring of next year. I am really excited and cannot wait, I am already saving up for it. I have never been a Playstation fan which is why I bought a Dreamcast one and a half years ago instead of waiting for the PS2.. bad mistake. Now though, I am sure that Nintendo won't fail or let me down. There are some fantastic games in the pipeline such as Luigi's Mansion, Wave Race: Blue Storm, 1080 2, Perfect Dark Zero, Sonic Adventure 2 (!), Fifa 2002, ISS, Virtua Striker 3...
The Gamecube is expected to be competitively priced at about £200, much cheaper than the PS2.
What are everybody else's thoughts? Will you buy one?

Sorry to say it, but the GameCube is gonna get panned by the XBox. It'll be like comparing Aleks Kolinko to Oliver Kahn: nice to know, but really not much good when it really matters.

I did have a N64. Groundbreaking in its time with games such as Goldeneye and F-Zero-X (which were hardly cartoon like).

Gamecube looks really interesting with more adult-oriented games(no, not porn) like Metroid Prime, Resident Evil Zero, Too Human, Eternal Darkness, Soul Calibur 2, Ridge Racer 6 and many more.
Much cheaper than a PS2 too. Looks like it stands between Gamecube and XBOX for me. But I like PC-games much more.

17 actually, but i do understand where you are coming from. Nintendo does make a lot of games which are, perhaps not entirely aimed at kids, but certainly designed with kids in mind. However there are many of these type of games for the playstation: crash bandicoot, spyro etc. however i actually enjoy the mario games, for instance ive recently spent a week playing super mario 1 and 3 with my friends sometimes staying up all night.
i have to disagree with you when you say that ALL their games are aimed at kids. games such as goldeneye, perfect dark, turok were all hits on the n64. there have also been many famous fighting and racing games, the two genres which the playstation thrive on. street fighter, mortal kombat, ridge racer, f1 wgp, colin mcrae.. it has also been anounced that sega, who will be working closely with nintendo, will produce sonic adventure and crazy taxi AND soul calibur 2 for the gamecube. now soul calibur is arguably the best fighting game ever produced, many place it higher than anything in the tekken series.
nintendo will not fail where sega did with the dreamcast because it has already addressed the two areas where dreamcast failed, namely strong third party support (EA, konami, eidos, acclaim..) and also a strong lineup of launch titles.
in response to benzihyi i disagree with what you say about the xbox. if i may borrow your analogy i would say it is like comparing oliver kahn and gianni buffon.. both equally strong with nintendo better in some departments and microsoft in others. the specs of both machines are very similar with nintendo again strong in some departments and xbox in others. i think that the battle of the consoles will be a very close run thing between nintendo, microsoft and sony. i think nintendos advantages will lie in the price (approx £200 at launch), a strong line up of games with excellent 3rd party support most importantly with sega, who will also be working with sony and microsoft but more so with nintendo and games such as sonic, crazy taxi, soul calibur and the sega sports games (nba/nfl/nhl 2k, virtua tennis, virtua soccer).

Dead Cell - No the N64 isnt like the PS. It has a joystick which allows for far superior control and has games that actually make you think. The thumb joystick alone was a dream to play with. Sorry didnt realise you wanted a whole catalogue of games, those were just my favorites. Additionally being cartoony doesnt make it bad.. how many adults like South Park or the Simpsons ?
Sure Nintendo is cartoony but there are plenty of games if you dont like that. The only game I literally was jealous of on the Playstation was the fighting one (Tekken?) and maybe Resident Evil.
Oh some more good noncartoon games? Its been a while but I remember these being pretty good -
1080 Snowboarding (pure class)
Extreme-G
Body Harvest
Turok - Dinosaur Hunter
Wave Race
Castlevania
NHL (for hockey fans)
Doom
Duke Nukem
Perfect Dark - never got to play it but as the sequel to Goldeneye it must have been good. I am out of touch now though due to emigrating and no money to spend.
I too think the Gamecube will do well simply because its cheaper. Microsoft do have more clout and titles but 3rd party software and value for money has always been important and was key to the PS's success over superior game machines.

Zonnin I have brought a ps2, and let me tell you the graphics are great. Alot of people are talking the X box but like dreamcast and the n64, it means nothing without the games. This is where Sony have it sussed they have all the top games houses sewn up and release bucket loads of games. I admit some are pants but hey Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Metal Solid, Iss pro, I could go on and on. Put that up against dreamcasts Virtual Striker and crazy taxi. The N64 had a couple of efforts. I think you will find this time next year ps2 will still rule the console league.

I think it will have a benefit because its a console made fore the wetern world and not mainly for the japanese market. I think many people who play pc-games instead of console games do it because the games are so different from the japansese games that dominates the consoles.
With XBOX we will have more console-games from the americans and europeans and that will probaly drag some pc-players to the machine.

I do acknowledge that the ps2 has great graphics, better than the dreamcast (but then i suppose the ps2 is more 'next gen'). also your point that what counts is the games is spot on. ps1 had both quantity, meaning that there was something for everyone, and quality, allthe games you mentioned and grand turismo. ps1 beat the n64 because of its greater quantity of games and the fact that n64s cartridges meant more expensive games.
also i regret buying a dreamcast.. initially it looked promising and many great games were made: sonic, soul calibur, shenmue, virtua tennis, crazy taxi.. but ultimately lack of 3rd party support killed them.
i dont think that any one console will dominate and it will be very even. ps2s advantage will be that it is already established andby the time that xbox and gamecube are out it will have a strong game library. its weakness will be that the delay in time will have allowed nintendo and microsoft to produce more powerful consoles..

I dont have time to play long, involved games. The Dreamcast was perfect as it was pick up and play. Nice, easy arcade games. The Gamecube offers something similar.
I'm not into wizard blast elf with special blinding powder, nor to I have any desire to fly a simulated glider or command armys of tanks to defeat the evil communists. The thought of pretending to be Peterborough Uniteds manager no longer holds any appeal to me either.

Totally agree Jaffa - the PS2 is a pile of cack and I cannot understand why anyone would want one, there isn't a single decent game on it (maybe GT3 excepted - but I don't particularly like that and one game over the space of 18 months is hardly enough to make you buy a console !).
The DC is an excellent little box capable of doing many things - on top of that Sega have released a pile of good games personally (check out Sports Jam and Outtrigger that recently came out). It's just a shame that third party developers were so short-sighted and didn't back Sega by releasing games (EA should be ashamed of themselves - but Sega will now get their revenge now by developing on other platforms).
X-Box - no thanks - I already have a good PC ....
Gamecube ... now this could tempt me - am impressed with what I've seen so far and I would imagine a lot of die-hard old school gamers will stick with Nintendo and shun Sony and Microsoft, now that Sega have (for the time being) disappeared from the hardware market.

I'm in the UK. However, you will soon be bale to pre-order form a number of US online retailers. Or as I'm doing, getting a mate in the US to pre-order and then pop down to babbages on release day and post it to me as a 'birhtday pressie' thus hopefully avoiding import duty.
Console plus a few games and postage will be considerably less than 300 quid.
You can get a Jap one in two weeks time from cex, next-gen or madeiragames. They are between 450-500 pounds and come with two games. ALternatively you can import a Jap machine from the US for 300 quid plus postage.

I didnt buy it but I have one here. Some good stuff on it even if it does have a PS-type controller.
You only need to take a look at Rogue Squadron 2 in action to know that the Gamecube is going to be something special. As for the person that said all Nintendo games are for kids, I prefer the escapism that these titles offer over anything that Sony and its various third parties have come up with for the PS2. If I want realism, all I have to do is stroll down the road or watch the news.
I've owned practically every console since the NES and Master System (although strictly not a console, I even had a Spectrum) and the PS2 is the first one I've held back on - too many sequels and average games that the PSOne can handle without much grief - at around £260, who are Sony trying to kid?
Emotion engine indeed.

The PS2 is indeed a very poor show.
It is costed out of the market, yet Sony have scrimped on components.
Like the 4mb Video Ram that limits a 30m polygons/s engine to around 5/6m maximum.
The PowerVR2 of the Dreamcast even manages to out perform it despite being about 2yrs older (Le Mans 24hr is the best performing polygon shifter at 6m/s)

Special Reserve are already taking deposits on the Gamecube, they claim if you pay £20, they give you a Gamecube on the day of release.
I think that Gamecube will do better than the N64 did last time.
I got to play on a Gamecube yesterday at ECTS. The machine itself was incredibly small and neat. The controller was awesome, perfectly weighted and snug in your hand.
The only game on offer was Universal Studios. Basically, you visit the Universal Studios theme park and play mini games. I tried out The Wild West and Back to the Future.
To be honest it was a tad dissapointing, especially the Back to the Future racing game. There may be plenty of depth to the game and the other mini games may be better but the incomprehensible Japanese prevented me from getting any further.
That aside, the TDK stand was showing footage of Shrek on the X-Box. It was dreadful, jagged graphics and a very nasty PS2 feel about it.
I've attended ECTS for the last five years, but finally gave up this year, with no one of any interest attending.
Can't see it being long before ECTS doesn't happen anymore, in favour of smaller, company-oriented shows, like the Nintendo one this year.

apparently the release date has been revealed by accident, possibly march 8th.
Well, I've bitten the bullet and ordered a cube from Hong Kong.
The total price including overnight fed-ex is actually hardly any different than you'll pay in the UK next easter.
You get a cube, controller, mem card, 2 games and a step down. All for 347.00.
In the UK it'll be 199 for the console?? 50 quid a game and 20 quid for the mem card. Making a saving of about 27 pounds........ hardly worth it for the 6 months??? wait.

I have already brought a PS2 but after reading this thread I am begining to wonder if I should have waited. However I know that a new Noe chip is out and I will be able to get games alittle cheaper than £50. What sort of format will the games for the cube be?

Cheers for that paf,one question though, does the price include the shipping and whill it be compatible with british games when they come out?
Now should I??
I doubt it'll work with English games, then again, you wont want it to as they'll no doubt have the usual borders and slow-down.
Developers are saying that with a simple hardware modification, it should be possible to play US games. Nintendo have usually made it fairly easy to get US-Jap compatibility.
You may get to use UK games, probably via a Gameshark or some other device.
Paf.
ps. price including fed-ex express postage was 347.

paf,you did not say you needed a NTSC television to play it on!!
plus the customs cost:eek:
All modern TV's should be NTSC compatible.
Customs charge is 'only if you get caught'
My cube has now left Hong Kong and is whizzing it's way to the UK as I type.... will be here Sat am. I however wont be........... typical :)
My cube arrived, customs cleared without opening it !!! Tax avoidance rocks.

Small...... and in the end cheaper than the UK will be.
This is the first ever hardware launch that has seen plentiful supplies and a low price point. No reason at all not to import one really.

I'll let you know when I plug it in......... was sitting on my desk this morning. Fed-Ex fairies dropped it off at the weekend.
The boardroom plasma screen is NTSC, so will try and have a play at lunchtime and report back.
Got Waverace:blue storm and Luigis Mansion. Though from all accounts the best game is super monkey ball, the only other releaase title and of course the one I didn't get

Will be interesting to hear your review, although my N64 has sat under my telly unplayed for the month or so I have been unemployed.
Change of tack, as I have long flights coming up I am taking my gameboy colour. Is it worth buying a duty free Advance and are there any good games for it yet. Back to the colour, I have Mario Golf, Tennis and Zelda, are there a couple of other addictive titles it would be worth my while buying at a good price.
Just had a blast.............. Waverace is great fun. Nice control system, super fast frame rate and the built in rumble is spot on. The jap text not proving particulalry awkward and the commentary etc all in English. My MD walked in, had a go, walked out and mailed his mother inlaw in Hong Kong to get him one too
Luigis Mansion, was very very dark and it is very single player game. The graphics were impressive but it appears you need to spend some time with it to get into the gameplay.
All in all though, blows anything I've seen on any other system right out of the water.
Now, super monkey ball.... I need it.........
:p

Well it's better than being at the top of the loser table because the people at the top spend all their time practicing and clearly have no life other than the xbox. At least it shows you're in touch with the real world :D

I don't think they've had to though, they all had it back in the day and I was only a kid. When I was young my family all thought I like Barbie dolls and babies (eeewww!). Though I was most happy when my Dad brought the commodore64!!!

I used to be a pro at games like track and field and all the fighting games. Probably very rusty now as it's been a while. Tend to focus on my DS, little bit addicted to tetris :)

Mortal combat was great though my sister would kick my arse repeated on that. I also had Eternal Champions, which kinda was a poor mans Street Fighter though I enjoyed it.
