He's great in Status Quo. I wouldn't buy that Parfitt chap though.

City big guns seek Rossi's signature

CHRIS LAKEY

14 December 2005

Norwich City's big guns were united yesterday in urging teenage star Rossi Jarvis to sign a professional contract that is on offer at Carrow Road.

The talented 17-year-old midfielder has, according to national newspaper reports at the weekend, attracted interest from the likes of Charlton, Portsmouth and Crystal Palace.

But there is a depth of feeling at Norwich that the Fakenham youngster should stick to what he knows best and put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the Canaries.

Jarvis has made just two Championship appearances as a sub but is a regular in City's youth and reserve teams and has impressed at all levels - certainly sufficiently to put pressure on some of the first team's under-performing midfielders.

Youth team coach Dave Williams watched Jarvis in action in the FA Youth Cup tie against Chelsea on Monday evening and knows exactly what he has to offer.

“Obviously it's a question for Rossi and his parents, but I would be very pleased if he signed the contract and stayed here,” he said. “I am sure his heart is here and I hope there is an agreement that can be reached.”

City boss Nigel Worthington urged the Academy youngster to sign up.

“He's been offered a two-year contract with a two-year option,” he said. “It's a very good offer that's been there, on the table, for two weeks and we'd very much like the boy to sign. But at the end of the day, the ball's in his court.

“He's obviously another Academy boy that's come through and we're delighted about that, but everybody's got to start off somewhere. It's a very fair offer from the football club and what the boy needs to do is to get it signed and get on with his work.

“As long as he progresses in the right way, Norwich as a football club will always make the first move in terms of coming back to the player with a view to offering a new and better contract in the future.”

City chief executive Neil Doncaster also joined the chorus saying: “Rossi has been offered his first professional contract at Norwich City. Like Nigel we're pleased to see another Academy prospect knocking on the first team door and we very much hope he signs.”

Jarvis, whose brother Ryan is already on a pro deal with City, is one of two City youth players who are knocking loudly on Worthington's door.

The other is Michael Spillane, who has yet to make the final step up but is considered by many to be a first team player in the making. However, Williams believes the 16-year-old, who has represented the Republic of Ireland at under-16 and under-17 level, is next in the queue.

“All players have potential and you look at them and try to assess the potential that is there,” said Williams. “If you are patient you know it will come through and Michael is one of those with a lot of potential and it is a question of how long. He certainly has the ability, the pace, the attitude and his game intelligence is starting to improve too.”

While the FA Youth Cup dream may have ended at the hands of Chelsea's expensively constructed counterparts, the job goes on for Williams and Academy chief Ricky Martin, who have been in charge of the set-up for around 18 months.

Williams is a former Manchester United youth coach, but said the difference between bigger clubs and the rest was huge.

“I don't think we're looking at 10 or 11 that will come through here,” he said. “I think the bigger clubs do expect to get a good proportion through to become pros but not necessarily at their own club. Like Manchester: of the players that came through there are a number who are dotted around the country making a living.

“We are at a different level here and we would expect to get twos and threes, while they are expecting sevens and eights. With us it's no secret who they are, people can see for themselves, they are the ones who are catching the eye.”
