If a horse starting at 2/1 in a 17 runner handicap is described as a "5 star nap" how would you describe a horse that's worth backing? :)

4:35 Anna Pavlova
Just about broke even with this which wouldn't normally be something to be pleased with but, the way I've been picking them recently this is nothing short of success! This gives me confidence for the weekend, hopefully I have come through the doldrums now.

Easy to say now i know but once the rain came it made that race fairly easy to narrow down. I hope you made the bookies suffer too!

1.45 - Cockney Rebel e/w - I'm likeing this one too MS, this look potentially a machine in the making. His lack of experience puts my off slightly but this is potentially a class above this lot. This could see a sizable wedge heading our way :)
2.15 - Indian Ink e/w - Should make all and looks best equiped of the principles to handle the rain softened ground.
2.50 - Reverence and amadeus wolf ew - Cant separate these 2. With the rain Reverence automatically comes into play and i know how good the wolf is. Have won my fair share on both in past so an e/w on both and a rev f/c.
3.25 - Pride of Nation - Should have this race at his mercy under ideal conditions, price is a little on the skinny side though.
4.00 - Dabbers Ridge ew (if price allows) - Toss up between this one and somnus for me with preference for the Hills horse unless i hear something on somnus.
4.35 - Zarwala - Interesting runner, can handle the soft ground and trip, big step up from a maiden but oxx is no mug.
5.10 - Tough race - leaning towards salesin ew, but as with all cumani runners, i'll be keeping a beady eye on the market. Ask with by my other choice.
First 4 went to plan, winning or placed so small lose (indian ink (e/w at 7/2)) to large profit on the 2.50. Expected a better run from Dabbers Ridge (as did market) and this was the only one i was really dissapointed with. Zarwala also saw a lot of money from the market, unfortuantely i did see run so cant comment on it. Wasn't much support for Salesin so went for ask, beat by a nose dispite the best efforts of Ryan Moore. He and Phillip Robinson are the best flat jockeys riding at the moment IMO.

The G/F wants me to take her horseracing at the weekend , so I'm thinking of going to Goodwood on sunday.
Never been to that track though , is it any good ? and can i just turn up on the day and get in ?
Also my knowledge of punting on the nags is practically zero and seeing as there are some bloody good tipsters on here , can i ask you to throw some tips my way as well please ?

You'll have a very nice day. It's definitely one of the loveliest courses in England - and I've visited most of them at some time. Full details here.
http://www.goodwood.co.uk/horseracing/
If you look at the number of tips on this thread, you'll find that in most cases by following them you'll do worse than picking them yourself! Obviously you're not going to bet a lot of money, so why not just choose a few yourself - that's half the fun :p
Enjoy your day!

I went once as a lad, was about 2 furlongs from the winning line and couldn't see a bloody thing. (Did back Come On The Blues at 33/1 though).
I went a few years ago on a corporate thing and was perched on a balcony just above the winning post - it was fantastic. Especially as I had a touch on the machine that was Giants Causeway.
Shouldn't be too busy on Sunday and I'd recommend paying the extra to get into the members area - at least that way you'll be near the winning post.
As Ian says, it's a great course - one of the best.

Monmore
4.57 T5 Roxholme Ryan NAP (This dog should win this event, with the main danger being Westmead Joe who will be flying late but by that time Roxholme Ryan should be clear as it should make the running with his early pace and be sprinting clear. Price 3/1 GET ON!!!!)

Not as good as that , Started well because i backed Brief statement in the first :lux:
Also backed Creative Mind ,George Washington and Barbirolle ..My own picks came nowhere in the rest .
The G/F done alright though , she had Speedy Sam in the 3.15 and Seshem in the 4.20 :)
We had a score each on every race so it was only a fun thing really .
All in all an excellent day , cracking racecourse , easily the best one I've ever been too .
Glad we took your advice and went in the Richmond enclosure as well . That was really good .

It's only about 15 minutes from me, CS. I don't think there are any more meetings until October, but during the Winter & Spring they were having a meeting every week. As you may have noted by odd comments I make, although I review the form every day, I normally conclude not to have a bet, and my normal betting pattern is around 1-3 substantial bets a week. Betting therefore isn't something I do for "fun" (although I fully understand that others see it that way). My one exception to that is Towcester, where I'll go as a social outing with friends, perhaps half a dozen times a season, and have a small fun bet in most races whilst I'm there - normally without success!
In fact, one benefit of it being free entrance (and free parking) is that on two occasions I've popped in for a couple of races on a day I was driving past in the car, and happened to notice a meeting was on. If I wander into the bar, I can normally guarantee there'll be someone I know there, full of hard luck stories of their day so far! I'm convinced that horses at Towcester don't run to any sort of form, and the jockeys sit around beforehand drawing lots as to who shall win each race. :)

I can relate to this , my betting is split into two parts , the first being " fun " bets like yesterday at Goodwood where I'm only betting small sums and if they win its a bonus , If not , no big deal .
The other part is my serious betting , which nowadays involves a lot of trading on betfair . This i take very seriously because the amounts are a lot more , with a lot of time spent on research and working to a very strict criteria .

I can relate too. Most of my betting would be classed as 'fun' bets, however these ones come from my own selections, which although not a strict criteria, there is a criteria there. I'm lucky enough to make my substantial bets based upon information i receive which has made me a substantantial profit, especially over the last 3 weeks or so, where i have been in a position finally to take it a bit more seriously. Cheers I noticed that yesterday, best price I can see is 11/4 with bet365, I may be biased but I think it has an excellent chance tonight, may well start favourite. Just Joey beat it by 6 lengths in the Hillary Needler but Onenightinlisbon has progressed far more than Just Joey and even has 1 pound pull even though its form of late is superior to Just Joey. Good luck if you back it.

Nice one Mickey.
I don't have a clue when it comes to horses but occasionally read this thread when I feel like a little flutter. I don't normally bet more than a couple of quid and felt like a bet today.
Got on this one at 11/2. Only bet £2 each way but a nice little return of £17 has made my day. Thanks Mickey....top tip.
Wish I could return the favour but I'd normally bet on the horse with the best name, or the favourite so I'm not much use.

MICK FITZGERALD is to retire from race riding at the John Smith’s Grand National meeting in April - and is vowing to “go out on a high”.
Nicky Henderson's long-serving stable jockey is to take a job as director of racing for a soon-to-be launched exclusive racing club, whose membership will include past and present England cricket captains Michael Vaughan and Andrew Flintoff, and Ryder Cup golfers Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood.
Fitzgerald, 36, stressed on Tuesday there will be no easing down in his final season, which he was determined to make "my best ever".
Few of jumping's major prizes have escape the popular and articulate jockey, and his wins include the Grand National on Rough Quest, Cheltenham Gold Cup and King George VI Chase on See More Business, and a Queen Mother Champion Chase on Call Equiname.
By the time he quits next spring, Fitzgerald’s career will have spanned 19 years, all but four of them as retained jockey to Henderson at Seven Barrows in Lambourn.
On Tuesday, he pinpointed last season's Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup success on the Henderson-trained Trabolgan as one of the most memorable landmarks, and definitely the most emotional.
The supremely executed win on the top weight, the first in the Hennessy for the trainer on his local course, came less than a week after Fitzgerald had returned to raceriding after breaking his neck in a fall at Market Rasen four months earlier.
"If it hadn't been for Nicky, I wouldn't have come back after that injury," he said." We've had a wonderful partnership. I've nothing but respect and admiration for him, both as a trainer and a person. He has been fantastic to work with."
The weekend after the Hennessy, Fitzgerald landed another prestige chase when the Paul Nicholls-trained Kauto Star won the Tingle Creek at Sandown.
It will be business as usual until Aintree is over next spring.
He said on Tuesday: "I've always given 100 per cent to everything I do and this season will be no exception.
“I want to make it my best season because I want togo out on a high. The Grand National will be a tough day for me emotionally, that's for sure.” He added: "I will be the first to admit that I've had a fantastic run, riding over 1,200 winners with so many big races along the way. All those owners, trainer and horses - fortunately for me far too many to mention - who have made my career so exciting and memorable will always be part of my life.
“I cannot thank them all enough for their wonderful support. It has been an amazing journey that Iwouldn't swap for anything.
"When I hang up my boots I will become director of racing for Club ISM. I have always put a premium on quality, and nothing gives me more pleasure than to be associated with top-class horses, so when I was offered the post with Club ISM I jumped at the chance.
“The club's aim is to have a number of quality horses, both Flat and National Hunt, in training with an impressive list of trainers."
Those trainers will include Henderson, who on Tuesday gave a glowing tribute to Fitzgerald.
"Mick is the perfect stable jockey in every respect,” Henderson said. “He has such a good brain, and is and outstanding communicator and team player. Apart from the fact he's a top-class jockey, he has been so totally loyal."
Henderson added: "We've had so many great days together, but last year's Hennessy was very special.
“To be frank, the week before the race I didn't think that Mick would ride Trabolgan. I knew he wouldn't take the ride unless he felt he was 100 per cent right.I trusted him completely, whereas some jockeys would say, ‘yes, I'm all right’, when they're not.
"I know Mick is eagerly looking forward to this season, and there'll be no easing down. Put it this way, he's at the tea interval and we're anxious to get another century on the board before

I assume one of those was Rainbow's Edge, Steve? I couldn't understand the price on it, so decided it was an appropriate horse to lay. I'm still confused as to why it would be so well backed. It hadn't run since May, and it's only two runs were on much shorter distances than the race today, so 5/4 seemed bizarre to me. But then again, people must have had good reasons to ignore those factors and back it so low - I'd be interested to know what the attraction was at that price.
Oh, and well done Gooders :p

Also, does anyone know any more background to this story regarding the first race at Nottingham?
"Daragh O'Donohoe was suspended for 28 days by the stewards at Nottingham following his riding of Krikket in the opening European Breeders Fund Trent Bridge Maiden Fillies' Stakes.
The William Haggas-trained two-year-old was sent off at 40-1 and finished seventh, beaten around five and three-quarter lengths.
Haggas was fined £5,000 and the horse, who had finished no better than ninth on her two previous runs, was banned for 40 days.
The Newmarket handler was handed a further £275 on top of that after the stewards ruled he had failed to aquatint his representative with the instructions given to O'Donohoe."
The horse had only run twice, and had both times been unplaced - indeed last of 10 last time. It started at 40/1 today which seemed about right. I'd be intrigued to know what lead them to give a 28 day ban when the horse finished no worse than it's form suggested it should. If they're suggesting he was pulling it, it might be one to watch out for next time if there's a deal of money going on it.

Very lenient handicap mark, pedigree suggested it will stay 2miles, won easily over 1 and half miles last time, unexposed, Ryan Moore on top.

Was a very strong word flying about for this one, meant to be quite special and potentially a 'staying star' (heard this from two diff sources). Didn't see the race but it may not have been run to suit, or it just didn't show on course what it shows at home. But you are right, was a very short price. I only (thankfully!) had a little bit on at 13/8 as had two other big bets today, one of which came in :) and one didn't :()

Definitely sounds like the "non-triers" rule to me. Still, O'Donohoe stole the last race for me on Banandonner, so I'll let him off. :p

I think the price was what bothered me, and which made me think this was a good value lay. As Steve said, you could certainly list persuasive reasons for its chances, and had it started at, say, 4/1 would have been a decent risk. But it was a horse who had not run at all as a two year old, and then after just two runs this season had not been seen since May. That suggested to me there had been fitness problems, otherwise they would have been running it. Even if now fully fit, it was surely going to need the race, especially over a much longer trip than it had experienced. All the "strong words" in the world weren't going to make it anything other than very poor value at those odds, with all the uncertainties.
But, clearly one to watch in the future.

I'm sure you're right, Gooders. I reckon they believed the connections could have been setting it up for a "sting" next time. By giving the actual horse a 40 day ban, they are effectively preventing them running her again this season, and ruining any plan that might have been hatched.

And so they should. It's difficult enough picking winners, never mind trying to work out which ones are running on their merits.
That horse I mentioned a few pages back (Bachelor Party) won at the 3rd time of asking the other day at 15/8f. Form not all that impressive though so I don't think I'll follow it.
Really crappy racing again today and I'll probably go for another mostly long odds perm from these:
Glorious Prince 2.10 Newcastle (been watching this one since the trainer pulled it out with a vets certificate one day and then ran it the next day - it finished 2nd at a big price)
Border Artist 3.40 Newcastle (will always give you a run for your money)
Whinhill House 5.10 Newcastle (finally showed some signs of form last time - lead most of the way before the saddle slipped, and now dropped back to 5 furlongs - danger might be The Leather Wedge)
Dubai Builder 4.30 and Greek Renaissance 5.00 at Salisbury both have good chances, but that'll be reflected in their prices.

Kind of true what you say about value, at 5/4 it wasn't what you would call good value before the off, but it would have been had it won by 5 lengths though. It not being seen as a two year old means nothing really and not being seen since may can mean so many things. (Hala Bek imediately springs to mind - unraced as 2 year old, won first time out at what could have been classed as poor value odds (word was out on this too - hence price) and then had a 'break' before he should have won the derby but for that poxt jink at teh end :().
Surprised you seem so dismissive of the 'strong words'. Recently i've been given horses which on face value seemed 'poor value' but the manner in which they have then run and then won actually made them 'good value' as they won in a manner that their price should have been a lot shorter - and many were horses that i would have gone against had i not heard. (one yesterday - first time out over fences vs a well backed and fancied runner).
Would be interesting to see that race - one for the future it may be but if it was a crawl then a 3 furlong sprint that would suggest it would need a stronger pace and maybe either a biiger field or a change of tactics.

I'm certainly not dismissive of information/tips etc hakers, especially from anyone who has been reliable in the past. However strong a tip, I'd always check the form as well to see if the tip makes sense.

Fair point, guess cos i know my sources and that they are stable people it makes a difference. If i checked the form on some of them though my gambling profits would be a hell of a lot lower (One max bet had been beaten an average of 40 lengths in its 3 previous races  )

The Northern Ireland man's comeback ride will be on Absolutelythebest in the opening World Bet Exchange wbx.com Novices' Hurdle.
McCoy will also in action on Jonjo O'Neill's Bouncy Castle in a maiden Open National Hunt flat race.
The rider sustained his injury during the Galway Festival on 2 August.

5.05: Apadi
5.35: Jump to it (good e/w shot)

1.30: Thousand Words
2.35: Caldra
3.45: Khyber kim
4.20: Al tharib
5.30: Mosharref
some e/w shots for the live races
1.30: Danebury Hill: very well bred. frankie on board meehan who has not been on fire lately but does get frankie on his better horses and is good value at around 10-1
2.00: Vital Statistics: this horse is another that is well bred out of indian ridge. elsworth and egan have been a good pairing this season albeit a bit dodgy sometimes but this is one race that i think could be theres, and around 9-1 is is great value
2.35: La Neige: now this is a massive race and there will probably alot of hard luck stories. however looking at the form of these there are not many who have been running at this class lately. now this horse has been running in a few class 1 lately and being doing itself justice so i will side with this at around a price of 16-1
3.10: Conquest: this race is a small field but this horse out of machiavellian should love the ground. the fav has a great chance but i think it could come down to these 2 and having run on the course before i reckon conquest could just pull out more.

Dutch Art was in the Middle Park - not the same race as Steve was referring to (the Chevley Park).
I have a friend who told me he was going to lay a substantial sum against Dutch Art. I warned him against it as I thought it was potentially a real class act, although I didn't actually back it myself. My friend did still lay against it but fortunately reduced the amount he'd intended to bet after my warning.

This isn't info - just a feeling I have.
When Alan Brazil was having his pre-7.00am chat with Derek Thomson he mentioned that he was off to Lingfield today and that he had a runner in the last. He's always very coy but I definitely thought to myself that he fancied it, so I made a note to have a look.
Sands of Barra it's called. Kerrin McEvoy is riding - I'm not sure he's ever ridden for Neville Callaghan before. I took that as a tip and got on at 18/1. It's trading at 14/1 now. Not very well drawn but it won at Lingfield last December off the same rating over the same distance and it looks to me from the form of its last 2 or 3 races that it might not always have been put in the races with a chance.
Might be worth an each-way interest. No promises though - it is a low-grade handicap after all. :)

You really shouldn't lump on anything on the flat at this time of the season - for a variety of reasons, nothing is certain. In fact, I virtually stop backing flat horses from about mid September when the going starts to change, and so previous form becomes unreliable.
If you do want to bet, keep it small.

Wise words. Dodgy time of year on the turf flat at best of times, tired horses etc but the way the weather has been the last few days makes it even worst.
Saying that I had 4 large ew bets today - see you there, had a little word on this, fished 4th :( - woodnook mr consistant, thought this was like buying money for a place at least, ended up winning - thought it significant that robbo went to linggers rather than matty henry to ride for jarvis so backed strobilus who was a great price at 11/2 and dotted up and Rochdale who was beat by a neck into second at 10s.
