TRIUMPH HURDLE winner Detroit City, who warmed up for a second jumping campaign with victory in the Cesarewitch, may reappear at Cheltenham on Sunday.

The four-year-old grey, owned by Terry Warner, is among 20 confirmations for the Greatwood Handicap Hurdle.

Detroit City's trainer is also considering O'Toole, a course winner last month, for the £65,000 contest over an extended two miles.

Arcalis tops the handicap with the weights set to go up by 4lb following the five-day entry stage. His trainer Howard Johnson is currently double-handed having also left in with Mephisto. Paul Nicholls is thinking of pitching Noland in his first handicap after the five-year-old was last seen winning the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the Festival.

Nicky Henderson has three entries - Caracciola, All Star and Tarlac - while Gary Moore also has a trio to choose from in Verasi, Nawamees and Ameeq.

John Quinn has left in Elite Hurdle winner Crow Wood and Caraman, with Acambo being David Pipe's sole representative.

Noel Meade's Jazz Messenger, Paul Nolan's Cuan Na Grai, Noel Meade's Sweet Wake and The Last Hurrah from Jessica Harrington's stable, make up the four Irish acceptors.

Sporting Index Cross Country Chase for the past two seasons, is all set to attempt a hat-trick in the £35,000 event on the first day of Cheltenham's Open Meeting this Friday.

The 13-year-old, whose name appears among 20 entries for the 3m7f contest, could be accompanied to post by at least one other from Enda Bolger's Limerick yard.

Bolger also has Buailtes And Fadas, General Striker and Heads Onthe Ground engaged and said on Saturday: "I think we'll be probably have two, or possibly three, runners.

“Spot Thedifference will definitely take his chance again, all being well, and the conditions of the race suit him ideally. General Striker is probably the least likely to run, although I haven't completely discounted him, and we should know how many we'll be sending byWednesday."

Britain's champion trainer Paul Nicholls is targeting the Sporting Index Chase with the 2005 Grand National runner-up Royal Auclair who is due to have a schooling session over the course in the early part of this week.

"We'll be taking him to Cheltenham on Monday or Tuesday," Nicholls said, "just to pop him over a few of the fences and give him a chance to have a look around.

"It'll be a new experience for him, but he's very well and has come out of his reappearance run at Ascot lastmonth in good nick."

Nicholls' Armaturk, the Paddy Power Gold Cup entry who beat Well Chief by a head in a thrilling finish to the Beards Jewellers Cup on the first day of the fixture two years ago, could bid for a repeat victory in Friday's renewal of the £30,000 handicap chase.

The nine-year-old is one of three entries champion trainer Paul Nicholls has made for the 2m event and was on Saturday reported in good form following his seasonal reappearance second behind stablemate Kauto Star at Aintree last month. Nicholls, who trains Paddy Power Gold Cup favourite Taranis, said: "Armaturk is in great shape and we'll be making a definite decision about him later in the week.

"We've also got Andreas and Saintsaire entered, and Armaturk has an alternative engagement in the Paddy Power Gold Cup on Saturday, so we shall see over the next few days."

Ground conditions will be among the deciding factors relating to the Nicholls-trained Gungadu's participation in the £20,000 Steel Plate and Sections Novices' Chase that closes Friday's Cheltenham card.

Nicholls said: "Gungadu wants plenty of cut in the ground, so we shall need to keep a close eye on the weather before making up our minds about whether he'll run."

Opposition to Gungadu could include the NIgel Twiston-Davies-trained Best Profile, easy winner of a novices' chase at Stratford three weeks ago, and Miko de Beauchene, successful by nine lengths when taking a beginners' chase for Robert Alner's stable at Chepstow last month.

Alner's wife Sally said on Saturday: "Miko came back from Chepstow in tremendous form and, as it's left-handed, Cheltenham would suit him.

"But we'd like to see some rain for him, preferably enough to make the ground soft, and he wouldn't be in Gungadu's class, so we'll need to watch both the weather and the likely make up of the field."

Mrs Alner added: "We'll also be entering Miko de Beauchene in the 2m 5f novices' hurdle at Cheltenham on Sunday, but the 3m of Friday's race might suit him better, because that was the distance he won over at Chepstow."

Hedgehunter could run at Thurles on Thursday

WILLIE MULLINS could give Grand National favourite Hedgehunter a first start of the season at Thurles on Thursday.

The 2005 Grand National hero only conceded to Numbersixvalverde in this year's running despite carrying joint top weight, and just as valiantly ran second to War Of Attrition in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

He is a general 12-1 favourite for the 2007 running ahead of a possible return in the 2m6f Thurles Chase.

"I haven't made a decision with him, I just entered him because he's well in at the weights for the conditions of the race," said the County Carlow trainer.

“He's perfect, in really good form, but I will not make a final decision until Wednesday."

Mullins also has Adamant Approach, the promising Our Ben, Livingstonebramble, Mossy Green, Joueur D'Estruval and Homer Wells in the 2m6f race.

Homer Wells put in some decent placed efforts in novice company last season and although not seen since February, he is one of two Mullins-trained possibilities for the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup at Newbury later this month. "I have Bothar Naand Homer Wells in the Hennessy,” added Mullins, “and I'm keen to keep them in at this stage. They would both like the trip, although Bothar Na prefers dry ground and Homer Wells would want it softer."

Missed That will be given a slow and steady build-up before receiving his first serious examination in either the Stan James King George VI Chase at Kempton or Leopardstown's Lexus Chase over the Christmas period.

Mullins sent the 2005 Champion Bumper winner straight over fences last season and was rewarded with two Grade 1 victories, including the Irish Arkle.

"He's back in his training, and schooled over some hurdles on Sunday, where he looked pretty good," said Mullins.

"I don't quite know where he'll run yet as he is a little bit behind theothers. He will probably be aimed for the Lexus, although he is also in the King George and I'd hopefully like to give him a run or two before then."

Like Missed That, Ballytrim also carries the red and white silks of Violet O'Leary that were made famous by Florida Pearl, and he too may go straight from bumpers to fences in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Beginners Chase at Thurles on Thursday.

"He's won a point-to-point and has been schooling well,” said Mullins. “He wouldn't have the speed of MissedThat but looks mature enough to go straight over fences."

OUR VIC will have a maximum oftwo more runs before being aimed at the Cheltenham Gold Cup, according to his owner David Johnson.

The eight-year-old remains in good form after his successful reappearance in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby last month, but connections want to ensure he is kept fresh for his main target of the season.

Owner David Johnson said: "Our Vic came back from Wetherby in terrific form and looked a picture when
we boxed him to Carlisle to parade on the following day.

“Our plan now is to aim for the Gold Cup and, as there are only a limited number of races en route to that, we want to select them carefully.

"It's no secret that he goes best when fresh - that's easy to see from the formbook - and we intend to space his races before Cheltenham so thathe's at his peak for the Gold Cup.

"The two obvious targets beforehand are therefore the King George at Kempton on Boxing Day and the Pillar (now the Letherby & Christopher Chase) at Cheltenham at the end of January." L'Ami, fourth in lastseason's King George and Gold Cup, could go for the King George again - for which he is 16-1 with sponsors Stan James - but is on course to run in the Betfair Lancashire Chase at Haydock a week on Saturday.

"L'Ami is very much on target for the Betfair Chase and I would think that AP McCoy will ride him," said trainer Francois Doumen.

"He has definitely strengthened and improved through the summer and will hopefully run a good race.”

Betfair are offering a £1 million bonus if any horse can win the Haydock race, the King George, or Lexus Chase at Christmas, and the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Doumen added: "Mr McManus doesn't put any pressure on me, but the Betfair Million is a good enough figure to think about. He could go to the King George, but the Lexus Chase is just as attractive so that could be on the agenda.”

Very Sad news - was a great horse and will be sadly missed :(

VETS in Lambourn were planning an all-night vigil as Nicky Henderson’s popular chaser Fondmort fought for his life after suffering internal bleeding caused by a fractured pelvis.

The injury happened at Seven Barrows on Tuesday morning in a final workout before his intended seasonal debut under top weight in the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham on Saturday.

Henderson said on Tuesday night the ten-year-old’s condition remained critical but he was showing the courage that was the hallmark of his four big-race victories at Cheltenham. He lost a considerable amount of blood and he was transfused with blood taken from another of the Henderson-trained jumpers.

“Fondmort is fighting, and we’re praying - it’s going to be a long night for everyone,” said the trainer.

He added: “This horse’s wonderful temperament is a major asset, and although he had a wobble during the afternoon he was holding his own when I saw him this evening. The next 24 hours will be crucial. Everyone who has watched him race knows how supremely brave he is, and mosthorses wouldn’t have survived this far.” Although a pelvis fracture is not usually life threatening, the break ruptured a vein and caused serious internal bleeding. The Lambourn horse ambulance was quickly on the scene and transported him to the Valley Equine Hospital.

Henderson added: “Fondmort has never missed a day’s work in all his time with us. He’s the soundest of horses. The accident was devastating for everyone involved with the horse, particularly Vicky Pearce who was riding him and has looked after him for so long, and for his owners Bill and Tracy Brown.

“Without the prompt arrival of the horse ambulance it would have been impossible to save him. We couldn’t have travelled him to the vets in a horsebox.”

A Cheltenham specialist, Fondmort’s four latest wins were recorded at the course, most recently when he smashed the 2m5f course record in the Ryanair Chase at the Festival. The race was again his main target for this season

Walsh favourite for top jockey at Open meeting

RUBY WALSH is as short as 2-1 favourite with Bet 365 to be top jockey at Cheltenham’s three-day Open Meeting later in the week.

Walsh has a 20 per cent strike rate at Cheltenham in the last five seasons having ridden 44 winners at the track in that period, and with a strong book of rides for champion trainer PaulNicholls including the likes of Gungadu on Friday, Gwanako and Taranis on Saturday and Noland on Sunday, the bookmakers are taking no chances.

VCbet also have Walsh as their market leader at 9-4 and their PR manager Neal Wilkins said: “Ruby Walsh has an outstanding chance to be the top jockey at Cheltenham over the three-day meeting in view of the level of form that his retained stable Paul Nicholls has achieved in the last few weeks." Both firms have champion jockey Tony McCoy as their second favourite at 4-1, while Timmy Murphy, leading rider at the meeting last year with four winners, is next in the list with Bet365 at 5-1, VCbet go half a point longer.

Bet 365: 2 Walsh, 4 McCoy, 5 Murphy, 7 Johnson, 10 R Thornton, 12 Geraghty, Fitzgerald, 14 Brennan, 20 bar

DAVID PIPE on Monday confirmed Vodka Bleu his number one hope for the Paddy Power Gold Cup and the seven-year-old is challenging Taranis for outright favouritism following the trainer’s bullish appraisal of his chances.

Vodka Bleu, who will be ridden by Timmy Murphy, has been cut to 5-1(from 6) with the sponsors and joined Taranis at the head of the market at 4-1 (from 13-2) with Stan James after Pipe suggested a two-year absence would not prove a hindrance at Cheltenham on Saturday.

Pipe, who will also be represented by Tamarinbleu, said: "It's two years since he's been on a racecourse, but it's fantastic to get him back so close to a run.

"He banged a tendon on his last run and we had to give him the time he needed to come back fit and well.

"He is our number-one hope for the Paddy Power and has a nice, low weight. "By the looks of it, Taranis will end up with top weight and we can't complain about that."

Vodka Bleu will be attempting to give the Pipe team their eighth Paddy Power success by following in the hoofprints of Our Vic, who won the race 12 months ago.

Pipe jnr added: "He had a gallop at Exeter last week which went very well and told us we have him where we want him.

"You look at his form and it's top class, beating Fundamentalist and See You Sometime when Fundamentalist was the one everyone was talking about. "His trip varies from two-and-a-half miles and three and it's just a matter of keeping him in one piece now.

"Timmy Murphy will ride him. With Tamarinbleu we are waiting to get the best jockey we can."

Tamarinbleu boasts high-class form as a novice, including a narrow defeat by Accordion Etoile at the Open meeting last year.

Pipe said: "He's been brilliant for us. He's run in all the top races and goes extremely well fresh.

"We considered the Haldon Gold Cup, but decided to wait for the Paddy Power and I'm glad we did.

"He's only six and has strengthened up."

Martin Pipe added: "It would be an apt victory for Tamarinbleu because he has the same owners as Beau Ranger, who gave me my first big-chase winner in the Mackeson Gold Cup of 1987.

"Vodka Bleu perhaps has a bit more stamina than Tamarinbleu but they both have good chances. "Tamarinbleu must have a good chance but Vodka Bleu is well-handicapped if he is bac

NOLAND, ante-post favourite for the Arkle Trophy, has been scratched from Paul Nicholls' armoury for the rest of the season after the champion trainer revealed that his Supreme Novices’ Hurdle winner had suffered an injury setback.

Revealing the news to the Racing Post on Wednesday, Nicholls announced that John Hales' star - as short as 9-1 for the Arkle with Coral despite never having jumped a fence in public - had been roughed off just four days ahead of his intended comeback at Cheltenham on Sunday.

Noland, who had been due to clash with the likes of Detroit City, Crow Wood and Acambo in the Greatwood Hurdle before going chasing, notched a four-timer last term.

The five-length winner of the Grade 1 Tolworth Hurdle in January, he completed a clean sweep of Britain's two top-flight 2m novice hurdles when flashing home to grab Straw Bear in the final strides of the Cheltenham championship.

Nicholls said: "My head groom Clifford Baker said last night that he wasn't happy with Noland's off-fore leg after finding heat in it, so we had it scanned this morning and the scan confirmed there was a problem.

"We discussed things with John Hales and my vet Brian Eagles, and we decided not to risk him this season. He's such a good horse, and the sensible thing now is to draw stumps and then get him right for the start of next season to go novice chasing.

"The horse has to come first and, funnily enough, we once had the same scenario with See More Business.

"We found heat in one of his legs after he won the Winter Hurdle at Sandown, so we put him away for the season and then never had a problem again. You've got to be patient with good horses." Even without Noland, Nicholls still looks to have a potentially strong hand for the Irish Independent-sponsored-Arkle, with his long-range team including recent Exeter winner Natal, who steps up to Grade 2 company over fences for the first time in Sunday's November Novice Chase at Cheltenham.

Nicholls added that exciting French import Gwanako, who had been due to make his British debut in the Grade 2 juvenile hurdle at Cheltenham on Saturday, had suffered a similar injury to Noland and will also miss the whole season.

The Greatwood on Wednesday lost not only Noland but also Galway Hurdle winner Cuan Na Grai, who will instead take his chance in the Grade 2 AIB Sharp Novices' Hurdle on the first day of the Cheltenham Open.

Trainer Paul Nolan, whose five-year-old impressed at Galway, said: "He left for Cheltenham this morning and he runs on Friday in the novice race.

"We had a pretty difficult decision, having entered him for both races, but we thought that with his handicap experience he might just have the edge over some of the others in the novice race.

"The Greatwood Hurdle looks a very competitive race, although I'm not saying the novice looks an easy race - far from it, it looks a superior novice race.

"We are just hoping that he may have a few pounds in hand against a few of his rivals because of his experience - but that remains to be seen."

POPULAR chaser Fondmort was still in a critical condition after fracturing his pelvis in a routine gallop on Tuesday.

The ten-year-old was taken to the RVG Valley Equine Hospital in Lambourn suffering from internal bleeding following the accident.

"He's fighting, we are fighting and the vets are fighting," the Seven Barrows trainer said on Wednesday night.

"Everything that can be done has been done and he has a wonderful team of girls who are giving him all the attention he deserves.

"He got through the night and he has got through the day but it's going to be a long haul. "His condition is the same as yesterday - he's still critical, but the great thing is his will to fight and that is still as strong as ever.

"Last night went okay, today went okay - despite a few little blips on occasions - and he's holding his own."

Fondmort was undergoing the finishing touches to his preparation for Saturday's Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham, the scene of several of his rousing triumphs, when he sustained the injury.

His last four victories have been at the home of National Hunt racing and he broke the 2m5f course record when winning the Ryanair Chase at the Festival in March.

Fondmort, owned by Bill and Tracy Brown, won the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Prestbury Park in 2003.

NEVER mind a sniff of that £1 million carrot, Kauto Star will be on a crucial fact-finding mission when he tackles 3m for the first time in the Betfair Chase at Haydock on Saturday week.

Kauto Star has yet to run beyond 2m4f, a trip he won over at Aintree on his latest appearance, and trainer Paul Nicholls on Thursday declined to commit him to the three-race series offering the lucrative bonus until evaluating evidence gleaned from the initial leg.

“Let’s take it step by step,” said the champion trainer after he paraded the magnificent lookingsix-year-old for the media in the sunshine at Ditcheat.

“After he won at Aintree I thought that if the ground at Haydock wasn’t testing then the Betfair Chase was the ideal race for us to see if he gets three miles; it’s a level weights race and it’s not a stiff track when the ground is decent. My gut feeling is he’ll stay, and I know Ruby Walsh thinks so too.”

Until someone reminded him, Nicholls said he had forgotten about the £1 million bonus offered to the winner of the Haydock race, followed by either the Lexus Chase or Stan James King George VI Chase, and completed by the Totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup. “It had slipped my mind, but it’s a terrific initiative and if he won next week then of course we’d be thinking about it. However, the horse comes first and the money isn’t our priority. At this stage we simply want to find out if he’s going to stay. Nothing is set in stone, and if it came up very soft at Sandown he might try to repeat last season’s win in the Tingle Creek.”

Nicholls paraded Kicks For Free, who is also Haydock bound, with his target the Listed £35,000 Pontin’s Holidays Newton Novices’ Hurdle. He said: “I would compare this horse favourably with Noland, who won last season’s Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.”

Plans to run Ornais over the brush hurdles at Haydock were scratched when the recent Exeter winner had a mishap while out at exercise on Thursday, and required four stitches to a minor flesh wound.

Denman may take up his novice engagement at Cheltenham on Saturday. ”It depends on ground conditions, but they’ve watered and I’m told rain is forecast,” added Nicholls.

Gungadu misses the Steel Plate and Sections Novices' Chase at Cheltenham on Friday

Markedly better with big flat handicaps than over the jumps with the tipping service, had a golden run in the summer of 2005, but cant rememeber any recent winners, have a feeling Vodka Bleu will be pricewise tomorrow

Key time and Standin a little bit to short for my liking - may double them up (2/1 win double). Would have wanted key time over evens first time over hurdles.

He is still living off that run he had - remember that - he couldn't tip a loser! A good few weeks in a row. You know he is doing bad when his selections drift - as a few of his recent ones have.

Think you maybe right but it wouldn't be a 'prisewise' bet - the value price already gone.

NO man likes a betmore than JP McManus, but when you own an old warhorse like Spot Thedifference a bet is not needed. You just enjoy the horse.

And what a horse to enjoy. McManus has owned many better than Spot Thedifference, but few horses take an owner into the Cheltenham winner's
enclosure on five occasions. That, though, is what the evergreen 13-year-old has managed after his fifth triumph over the track's cross-country course and his third successive victory in the Sporting Index Chase, the Open's now traditional up, down, this way, that way first-day highlight.

Amazingly, given his advancing years, this was arguably his most impressive victory yet.

On the bridle for most of the race under regular rider JT McNamara, he lobbed into the lead five fences from home and then maintained his advantage all the way to the line, despite the persistent threat of compatriot Star Performance.

Spot Thedifference's McManus-owned stablemate Buailtes And Fadas took third but collapsed and died soon after pulling up, while 13-8 favourite Royal Auclair disappointed in fifth after having every chance. "I didn't back him," said McManus of Spot Thedifference, admitting that his failure to punt "probably helped" the veteran go off at generous odds of 5-1.

McManus added: "I suppose it was a fair price, and I had every encouragement to back him, but I didn't have my betting boots on. I'm just thankful they run these races, otherwise we'd never have known how good he is!

"He gets better with age. John Thomas said he travelled better than he ever has. He loved it out there today. When you're 13 rising 14 you think that every day is a bonus, but this horse keeps a little bit for himself, so he might be able to go on a bit longer."

If he does, he will continue to be savoured by his owner. "Today," he said, "he's very close to my heart. These are memories for the rocking chair."

Oliver McKiernan was more than happy with Star Performance, who may return to the December meeting for another crack at the cross-country course.

“We are really point-to-point people and this is the closest we can get to it,” said McKiernan from Rathcoole in County Dublin. “We really love it here.”

Standing Obligation ^

DAVID PIPE breathed a huge sigh of relief when celebrating his first Cheltenham winner as a trainer following the cosy victory of Standin Obligation in the 3m novice chase.

Having set out to make all the running on the bold jumping seven-year-old, Timmy Murphy did not panic going to the final fence as Openide came with a sustained challenge.

But Murphy is nothing if not cool in the saddle and he only had to shake up the 4/6 favourite for a matter of strides before nudging him out to score cheekily by a length.

Pipe stated: “He has jumped superbly but he is probably better with some company but the way the race panned out we were forced to do the donkey work as a result. There are no plans we will see how he comes out of this.”

The young trainer added: “There is actually a bit of history about this result as he was my father’s last winner as a trainer here in April and now he has got me off the mark at the course.”

Not surprisingly the bookmakers quickly revised Standin Obligation’s odds for the Royal & SunAllianceChase with William Hill and VCbet going 10/1,Paddy Power, Totesport and Coral went 12/1 and Ladbrokes and Stan James are 14/1 and 16/1 respectively.

Moon Over Miami scored a surprise 16/1 victory in the Grade 2 novice hurdle when coming froma long way off the pace in the hands of Noel Fehily to pick up War General on the run to the line. There was a sad postscript as the runner up collapsed and died from internal bleeding after pulling up.

Conversely connections of the winner were left dreaming of possible Cheltenham Festival glory next March as the success put Moon Over Miami in line for a tilt at the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

Turning for home things did not look that rosy for the five-year-old, a beaten favourite on both starts this term, but he answered all of Fehily’s calls from the last hurdle for a length verdict in the Anglo Irish Private Banking sponsored contest.

His trainer Charlie Mann said: “The horse has got himself beat the last twice and I was extremely pissed off as he doesn’t settle and there was no pace in those races.

“He is a decent horse though so we would like to come back here in March but he can get a bit fresh so he needs a bit of racing and we will have to pick and choose our races between now and theFestival.” Galway Hurdle winner Cuan Na Grai was a major disappointment and trailed in a well beaten sixth in the end with trainer Paul Nolan blaming the “dead ground”.

Bookmakers immediately lengthened Cu Na Grai for the Anglo Irish BankSupreme Novices Hurdle but introduced the winner with VCbet, Paddy Power and William Hill going 33/1 while Blue Square and Stan James are 40/1.

Darby Wall made amends for falling at the course last month when sent off 3/1 favourite with a hard earned victory over No Guarantees in the 3m amateur riders handicap chase under JT McNamara.

Punters keeping the faith were rewarded with a 6/1 SP after Enda Bolger’s charge stuck on gamely up the hill to hold the renewed challenge of No Guarantees, who did himself no favours by continually jumping right.
Bolger and McNamara later completed a double with Spot Thedifference and the trainer said: “I suppose that makes up for last time and he could return for a conditional jockeys handicap chase on theFriday of the December meeting.”

The two mile handicap chase went to the Tony McCoy partnered Rubberdubber outgunned Armaturk and trainer Charles Egerton is considering sending him to Ascot next weekend for Amlin 1865 Intermediate Chase.

Irish youngster Robert Colgan gained his first Cheltenham triumph when driving out After Midnight to prove three quarters of a length too good for From Dawn To Dusk in the conditional jockeys handicap hurdle.

Winning trainer Tony Martin said: “Robbie really is a great kid and if Ruby Walsh or Paul Carberry was not available I would have no hesitation using him.”

Star performance
After drawing a frustrating blank at the meeting to honour his father Martin, David Pipe posted his first winner as a trainer at the course with Standin Obligation.

You heard it here first
“He is going to be the Walsh and Carberry of the future. This lad is going to be one of the best” - Tony Martin heaped praise on conditional rider Robert Colgan after the youngster brought home After Midnight.

BETTING FORECAST: 9/2 Vodka Bleu, 5/1 Taranis, 7/1 Copsale Lad, 10/1 Kandjar D´Allier, 12/1 Chilling Place, Knowhere, Tamarinbleu, Too Forward, 14/1 Tumbling Dice, 16/1 Graphic Approach, New Alco, 25/1 Butler´s Cabin, Exotic Dancer, Nayodabayo, 50/1 Kelrev, Tighe Caster, 66/1 Calatagan, 100/1 Another Joker.

SPOTLIGHT VERDICT: Given the positive vibes emanating from Pond House this week, it's reasonable to row in with VODKA BLEU despite his monster layoff. His stable has enjoyed a near monopoly of this event and he does look handily weighted, handles most ground and won over the C&D at this meeting two years ago. Taranis could still be anything over fences and is respected, along with Chilling Place and Copsale Lad.[PJ]

THE Greatwood Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham today has grown in reputation over the past few seasons. Run over the Champion Hurdle course and distance, it has served to highlight the title aspirations of a succession of progressive hurdlers.

So far, only the 2002 winner Rooster Booster has gone on to legitimise the race's modern reputation as a Chapino Hurdle trial, though that is perhaps not surprising, given the dominance of Irish-trained hurdlers in recent years. Some, however, are of the belief that all that could change.

Detroit City, a grey gelding who carries the yellow and black colours of Terry Warner, cannot yet be regarded as the reincarnation of the much-missed Rooster Booster. But he could be on the way.

Today we will find out just how passable an imitation of the former champion he is ready to pull off.

A hefty burden of 11st 12lb will cause his four-year-old frame real strain, and defeat on these handicap terms could well turn out to be no disgrace. Nevertheless, there is something decidedly special about this horse and plenty will believe that his class will consume the opposition.

When Detroit City beat his stablemate Fair Along in the Triumph Hurdle in March, trainer Philip Hobbs seemed inclined to believe that the winner was essentially a stayer. He even predicted that the sharper Aintree circuit would bring about a reversal in the form when the pair met again in the Anniversary 4-Y-O Hurdle the following month.

There we saw the first indication that this horse is capable of defyingdoubtful prognosis - a common element in the history of many former champions. Detroit City simply poured it on from the third last and routed the opposition.

In September, it became clear that Hobbs was to aim Detroit City for the Cesarewitch. A progressive three-year-old for Jeremy Noseda last year, he had worked his way up to a mark of 94 for the Newmarket assignment. Once again, he made light of potentially difficult circumstances, overcoming a six-month layoff, a large field and the marathon journey to win in decisive fashion.

Though he will always be inclined to race lazily, there is no doubt Detroit City has matured a good deal over the summer.

Statistically, he is something of a forlorn hope for the Champion Hurdle next year, for no horse since See You Then in 1985 has prevailed as a five-year-old, and no fewer than 70 have tried. If he can beat them all under top weight today, however, the statisticians may have to watch out.

It must be said that a small doubt exists over the suitability of the going on his return to hurdling. The son of Kingmambo is regarded as a good-ground horse by his stable, but the form book strongly suggests that he is effective on ground a little slower than that. After the watering and the rain, however, will it be just too soft this afternoon?

In assessing Detroit City's chance, we need to remember that jumps horses who get on a roll can sometimes improve at a rapid rate.

Steve Mason's superbly accurate Racing Post Ratings already give him a solid chance on form, but we must bear in mind that Sweet Wake and Acambo are similarly unexposed types from top yards.

All fans of Detroit City will be hoping he comes through and is not diverted to the staying ranks. He may have won the Cesarewitch, but even Istabraq was a stayer on the Flat.

We will find out more this afternoon, but the signs are that Detroit City has the talent for the Champion Hurdle. For this horse, the World is not enough.

FAIR ALONG jumped his rivals into theground to run out a convincing winner of the Independent Newspaper Novices' Chase at Cheltenham.
The Philip Hobbs-trained four-year-old, ridden by Richard Johnson, had his rivals in trouble a long way out as he attacked his fences with real gusto.

Odds-on favourite Natal could never get in a blow and was beaten nine lengths by the 100-30 winner at the line. Penzance was another nine lengths back in third.

Johnson told Channel Four Racing: "We soon went two lengths up and he's very brave.

"For hisfirst time over fences that was a great effort."

The winner clearly impressed the bookmakers, who inserted him towards the head of the ante-post betting for the Arkle over course and distance next March.

VCbet make him a 14-1 chance, while totesport go just 10-1.

Hobbs said: "He's an amazing horse and he's so game. He was crippled on Thursday night as he knocked a joint during the day.

"We declared him on Friday morning but didn't think we would get here. However he was better yesterday and was sound this morning.
"He is so genuine and tough and has always schooled well. We'll have to look at the Arkle now although he wouldn't want it like a bog through the winter so we'll pick and choose our way to the Festival and give him a break at some point."
Paul Nicholls said of the runner-up: "Ruby (Walsh) thought the ground was a bit tacky - he's a good-ground horse and Ruby never felt particularly comfortable as the ground is a bit gluey.

"The winner had got the four-year-old weight allowance, which is very valuable as I know only too well.

"Our fellow didn't bounce off the ground and always runs similar races here.

"He was sixth in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle and is probably better on flatter tracks like Newbury and Aintree when there is bounce in the ground.

"I wasn't thinking of the Arkle at the beginning of the season as he would probably be better going further but he might run in it if it were very quick ground.

"A fortnight today there is two-and-a-half-mile race at Newbury. If it is fast ground Natal will run, and if it's slow Denman will."

Of third-placed Penzance, Alan King added: "The weights favour the four-year-olds and it's tough giving weight to them.

"However, the winner was very impressive and I'm very happy. It was a grand run and he's run to his mark."

Detroit romps home in the Greatwood

by Martin Kelly

DETROIT CITY put up a brilliant front-running performance to turn the Greatwood Handicap Hurdle into a procession.
Last season's Triumph Hurdle winner, sent off the 6-5 favourite, stirred the enthusiastic Cheltenham crowd as he gave his rivals lumps of weight and a terrific beating.

Johnson steered a wide course coming down the hill on last month's Cesarewitch hero and Terry Warner's popular grey never looked in any danger of defeat.

Hobbs's gelding was able to slow up slightly jumping the last before powering up the hill to win by 14 lengths from Ameeq (8-1).

Caraman (50-1) was another three lengths back in third.
Detroit City is 4-1 favourite from 6-1 with VCbet for the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle.
"I was a bit worried there was no pace in the race," declared Johnson.

"Jamie Spencer when he rode him at Newmarket said he might have found it easier if he'd been a bit handier so I thought I'd just let him bowl along.

"He came away from them all really well and did it very easily.

"I let him stride down the hill and he obviously stays very well.

"I never felt like getting to the bottom of him, which was very nice."

Fair along, a horse I always back ( but left alone yesterday), runs cheltenham very well, see its now favourite in places for the Arkle, but there are some very interesting contenders in that market and despite a brilliant performance yesterday I wouldnt go plunging in just yet.

Was on Cork all star in the last, which I understand landed a huge touch for connections, everyone seemed to be on it

OLIVER IN HOT WATER AT LEICESTER
By PA Sport Staff

Jockey Henry Oliver was hit with a 28-day ban after appearing to drop his hands on Prairie Minstrel at Leicester.

The 12-year-old gelding was a 5-2 chance for the extended two-and-a-half-mile Prima Handicap Chase and looked set for his first victory since 2003, having opened up a healthy lead of about five lengths after the last.

But Oliver's decision to ease down on Robin Dickin's charge proved a costly one for Prairie Minstrel's followers as 5-4 favourite Lambrini Mist was allowed to get up in the final stride for a neck win.

The stewards responded by finding, under rule 156(i), that Oliver failed to ride out on a horse that would have won.

He will now be sidelined with a suspension that stretches from November 24 to December 22.

December 17 is excluded because there is no racing on that day.

Oliver said: "It was a mistake and I hold my hands up.

"I didn't want to knock the old horse about any more than I had to."

Warwickshire handler Dickin was sympathetic to Oliver but there was no disguising his disappointment at losing the race in such a manner.

He said: "If Henry hadn't stopped riding, he (Prairie Minstrel) would have won.

"I haven't even got a small doubt about that. He would have won - and should have won. It was a serious error.

"But we all make mistakes. There is no point in me going berserk because I should think there is nobody more devastated at this moment than Henry Oliver.

"He is very loyal and works very hard for me at home.

"It is very disappointing for everybody - especially the horse. He is an old horse and races like that don't grow on trees."

I could live with the lose if it had fallen, been pulled up or simply not good enough but the fact that it was human error that cost me the money :veryangry At least he has admitted his mistake.

RIP Dessie :(

DESERT ORCHID, the ever-popular Cheltenham Gold Cup winner of 1989, died peacefully on Monday morning at the age of 27.

The dashing grey achieved iconic status within the National Hunt arena and was much-loved by racing enthusiasts for his iron will and extreme adaptability.

He won 34 races in total, including seven at his beloved Kempton, where four victories in the King George VI Steeple Chase underlined his immense talent.

In a statement to PA Sport, his former trainer David Elsworth revealed: "Desert Orchid died peacefully in his stable at 6.05 this morning.

"There was no stress, he departed from this world with dignity and no fuss.

"He did his dying in the same individual way that he did his living. It was time to go."

Elsworth continued: "Dessie had not been well for the past week and was losing his co-ordination and Richard Burridge visited only yesterday along with Janice Coyle.

"Our thanks goes to David Bartram from Greenwood Ellis for his kind help in making his last days comfortable.

"He was27 years old and we had been involved with this wonderful horse for quarter of a century both in his racing days and retirement.

"Everybody will miss him and our sympathy goes to his adoring public and fan club that never ceased to take opportunities to see him at his public appearances."

Indeed, Desert Orchid's popularity showed no signs of dimming following his retirement in 1991.

Having gained his last success in the Agfa Diamond Chase at Sandown in February of that year, Desert Orchid bowed out in front of a packed Kempton grandstand on Boxing Day.

Attempting to win his fifth King George, the Richard Burridge-owned gelding took a crashing fall three fences from home.

His swansong may have been unceremonious, but Desert Orchid's past performances at the track meant connections were left in no doubt as to where his final resting place should be.

Elsworth added: "Desert Orchid will be laid to rest at Kempton Park near his statue where many of his most memorable triumphs took place.

"He will be sadly missed by the staff here at Egerton and will forever be remembered for the great moments he gave his racing public."

Colin Brown was Desert Orchid's regular partner from 1983 to 1988 and the retired jockey claims he owes his career to the legendary grey.

He said: "He was a different class. I rode him in more than 40 races and won 17.

"He was just an outstanding horse with an outstanding character. He could be stroppy sometimes but he was a real professional.

"To put things in perspective, he was very ordinarily bred but it just shows what can happen sometimes. A big engine gets into a horse and they prove to be unbeatable.

"The first time I saw him was when he came off the box at David Elsworth's yard as athree-year-old. He was just a tiny, hairy thing, but he progressed, galloped well at home and jumped like a buck.

"It took me a mile to pull him up the first time I schooled him.

"Once he strengthened up, you could do whatever you wanted on him. It was like driving a Ferrari rather than a Cortina.

"Basically all I had to do most of the time was just to sit on him. David Elsworth, Janice Coyle and Rodney Boult made the horse.

"Every time I rode him was a highlight. I used to love going to Wincanton for the Jim Ford on the way to Cheltenham every year and there was a memorable Gainsborough Chase I won on him at Sandown.

"He also had a fantastic retirement. I remember when I used to ride him in the parade before the King George. He looked as though he was running away with me but he wasn't. He'd go like the clappers but he was very clever. He would pull up when you wanted him to.

"I owe my career to him. I do corporate hospitality these days and whenever I mention that I used to ride Desert Orchid even the most bored people in the room are suddenly interested."

Simon Sherwood was quick to pay tribute to the gallant grey, with whom he struck up a fantastic partnership throughout 1988 and '89.

The pair gained their most famous victory in the Gold Cup, where Desert Orchid's battling success over Yahoo sent the Cheltenham faithful into raptures. "To me he was obviously a great friend and was just the greatest horse you could ever wish to ride in a race," Sherwood explained.

"He was brave, tough, intelligent and totally honest.

"He gave me a Whitbread, a Gold Cup and two King Georges to name just a few and he was arguably the most charismatic racehorse we've had for the last decade and more.

"He remained at the top level for a long period of time, doing it the hard way from the front.

"Without doubt he could have won three or four Gold Cups if Cheltenham had been right-handed.

"It was lovely to see him this yearat Cheltenham and he was looking fantastic. I was fortunate enough to show him to my son in the stables afterwards and you could see without doubt that his quality of life was 100 per cent.

"Obviously the Gold Cup was really special and it's only afterwards that you hear some of the anecdotes of people's experiences of that day.

"The other race I'll always enjoy is the Whitbread that he won off top weight over a trip that most people thought he'd probably never get.

"But every ride on him wasa bit special," he added.

Richard Dunwoody took over from Sherwood for the last two years of Desert Orchid's career.

The former champion jockey won seven races on the popular grey, including two King George VI Chases and the Irish Grand National.

He said: "It's very sad.

"He was a fantastic horse to ride and without doubt the best horse I ever rode in my entire career."

Reflecting on the news, Paul Fisher, managing director at Kempton Park, said: "He was a real hero at Kempton and willbe sorely missed by everyone here.

"He won four King George's here and one Racing Post Chase.

"We've got a full-size statue of him at the yard as he was such an icon.

"It's honour that his ashes will be laid to rest near the statue at the course.

"It is also quite fitting we've got a race named after him, the Desert Orchid Chase, a day after this year's King George on December 27.

"That's the first running of that particular race and it is sure to be an emotional day.

"He had a great life and will be really missed."

Former jockey Brendan Powell recalls getting into some memorable battles with Elsworth's grey over the years.

One particular contest etched into racing legend is the 1989 Victor Chandler Chase at Ascot, when Desert Orchid had to display all of his fighting spirit to overhaul Powell and Panto Prince after the pair had engaged in a rousing battle.

Powell said: "I took him on that day going down the hill because the one thing Panto could do was jump.

"We matched strides all the way round and going to the last I still thought we'd win but he was an amazing horse.

"He'd be three or four wide of you and then Simon would pull him in and as soon as he got to you he'd go and find a bit more.

"It was a great performance as Panto was a good horse and he gave us around a stone and a half that day.

"I think that was actually named the race of the season and we went some gallop from the word go and it was scary half the time."

Powell remembers the Desert Orchid era with great fondness, even though he was never asked to take the reins.

"He was a tremendous horse to do what he did. He won the Irish National with 12 stone and was then also a two-miler," he said.

"He was just a great horse and I was associated with David Elsworth at the time.

"I always thought he might put me on him one day but I think he was maybe too good for me!

"It's Janice (Coyle, stable-lass) and the head lad Rodney Boult you have to feel for as they rode him every single day but I never got on him at home.

"I rode him once at Perth, about six or seven years ago when he paraded, and they were having a bet as to whether he'd run away with me or not.

"But I knew what he was like and I didn't let him out of a trot," he told At The Races.

Why switch him back to the Flat?

DETROIT CITY is set to follow the "Rooster Booster" route to the Champion Hurdle before possibly switching back to the Flat next season for an ambitious tilt at the Melbourne Cup.

Last season's Triumph Hurdle winner put up an impressive performance under Richard Johnson in Sunday’s Greatwood Handicap Hurdle, making every yard to win by 14 lengths under the burden of 11st 12lb.

Owner Terry Warner, whose yellow and black silks were made famous by Rooster Booster confirmed on Monday that the likely plan for his latest grey is to have two more races before the Champion, with the boylesports.com International Hurdle, formerly known as the Bula Hurdle, back at Cheltenham on December 9, followed by the Agfa Hurdle at Sandown in February - both regularly used by Rooster Booster in the build-up to the Champion Hurdle – his two likeliest targets.

Warner said: "I had a long chat with Richard after racing and he was saying that he had improved dramatically from when he won the Triumph Hurdle. He's a much stronger horse.

"He did really well for a four-year-old. The big worry for me was the going. I thought he wanted no worse than good going but obviously he loved it.

"Richard said he just let him have his own way coming down the hill and off he went. He said he didn't hit him or urge him he just went and he didn't realise how far in front he was.

"He'll be back for the Bula and depending on what happens, he'll probably go to Sandown for the Agfa in February."

Detroit City won the Cesarewitch on his sole Flat start this year, and Hobbs told At The Races that he could make a shock appearance in next year’s Melbourne Cup. “It’s not beyond the realms of possibility. I wouldn’t rule it out. It is a possibility that he might run on the Flat next year at some stage, but that is a long way off.”

Although impressive to the eye, Detroit City did not achieve enough in winning on Sunday to justify favourable comparisons with Rooster Booster according to Racing Post handicapper Steve Mason.

"He still has some way to go to earn the 170 rating I gave to Rooster Booster when he won the Greatwood four years ago,” Mason said.

"I've got Detroit City running to a Racing Post Rating of 165, based on his margin of victory over Ameeq and Caraman, and I wouldn't want to pitch his performance any higher.”

Mason continued: "I haven't any doubt that Detroit City is improving - you could see that from the way he won the Cesarewitch - but he was allowed to set his own fractions at Cheltenham and nothing really had a chance to test him.

"He'll probably need to run to around 170 to make a major impact in the Champion Hurdle, so he will have to progress again to justify favouritism.

"He was very impressive, there's no doubt about that, but it would be easy to get carried away by his win at the weekend and I don't think it would be sensible to do that at this stage."

I was thinking of adding Fair Along for the Arkle he's currently at 10/1 :D

What price will that make it for a treble:

Fair Along 10/1

Black Jack Ketchem 7/4

Detroit City 4/1

Why do people use this smilie :lux: before a horse has even run? If it runs, and if it wins, then that's the time to use this :lux: and not before.

As it happens, I have a sneaking feeling it's the bookies who will be doing this :lux: after the race is over.

His jumping hasn't been immaculate so far so that the ones just behind him in the betting for the RSA chase are very capable types.

Secondly, depending on the what the horse does in between now and then, his destination may change, the form of Kauto Star may play a part, Denman could become a gold cup horse or at the other end of the scale a Champion chase horse.

Fair Along, excels at cheltenham, very risky putting him a win acca, just said, although the form is solid, dont think he is banker material just yet

GRAND NATIONAL hero Numbersixvalverde took a significant step towards his return to Aintree in April when 'Slippers' Madden popped him over four flights of hurdles on The Curragh on Tuesday morning.

The ten-year-old spent the summer with Teofilo's rider Kevin Manning and this was the first time he had jumpedsince he returned to trainer Martin Brassil.

Madden was delighted with him and said: "He felt good. He's fresh and really strong in himself. He feels a year younger rather than a year older. He looks a bit fat and there's plenty of weight to come off him, but Martin hasn't got stuck into him yet and it'll come off him when he starts to get a good bit of work into him"

Numbersixvalverde's entire programme is being geared towards Aintree, and he is likely to race no more than three times between now and then, whereas last year he ran six times before the big race.

Brassil, whose other stable star Nickname won a Grade 2 chase at Navan on Sunday, said: "Depending on how things go, he'll probably have only three runs before Aintree. He'll probably run in the three-mile hurdle at Leopardstown at Christmas time, and I might make an entry for him in the Hennessy in February. He'd then have another run in a hurdle somewhere. "He's a very sound horse to train, and he definitely improved between winning the Irish National and the Grand National. I'd say he's much stronger now."

Neither Brassil nor Madden anticipates Numbersixvalverde having any fear of the Aintree fences when he returns in April. Brassil said: "There wasn't a mark or a cut on him after Aintree, so I hope he'll go back there with a really good memory of the place."

Madden, looking forward to his second ride over the big fences on Pearly Jack on Sunday said: "He took to it so well and quickly got into a good rhythm. He jumped from fence to fence and I just left him alone and sat with him.

"It would be great to win the National twice. It's a very, very hard thing to do, but there's no reason

The Betfair-sponsored calendar costs £10 plus £2.50 postage and packing (credit cards or cheques made payable to The Lady Jockeys Calendar) and can be ordered by calling 01635 44102. BRAVE INCA will take the first step on the road to defending his Champion Hurdle crown at Punchestown on Sunday in a contest that is building into the race of the season so far.

The Morgiana Hurdle, raised to Grade 1 status this term and set to be shown live on BBC, is set to feature a clash between Colm Murphy's stable star, Champion Chase winner Newmill, Harchibald and possibly Asian Maze and Hardy Eustace.

However, while Murphy hopes that Tony McCoy is able to continue his association with Brave Inca - who won the race last year - the champion jockey could have to ride at Aintree that day, when Clan Royal is set to run in the Becher Chase.

Murphy said of Brave Inca on Tuesday: "He seems in good form and it's a case of so far so good with him.

“We think he's a little more forward than this time last year, as he came back in a week or two earlier, and we're looking forward to Sunday.

“I haven't heard that Tony won’t be over, so one can presume he'll be riding our fellow again at the weekend."

The groundat the Kildare track was described as soft, yielding to soft in places, with heavy rain expected on Wednesday and showers later in the week.

"Ideally he'd love a bit of nice ground as he jumps and travels better on nicer ground," added Murphy. "That said, he's gone on everything so hopefully he'll be okay whatever the ground on Sunday."

Newmill, who began his last campaign over hurdles before winning over fences at both the Cheltenham and Punchestown festivals, could well make his seasonaldebut in the €100,000 contest.

Trainer John Murphy said: “He's very well in himself and you could well see him on Sunday, as he's ready to start back.”

Harchibald, who started favourite for the race last year on the back of a victory at Tipperary but could finish only third, is also set to line up on Sunday. His seasonal reappearance in the Tipperary Hurdle last month did not go according to plan when only fourth to Scarthy Lad and his prospects of running hinge on the ground.

Trainer Noel Meade, who has also entered Iktitaf, said: "The plan is for Harchibald to run on Sunday as long as the ground is okay. I'm not going to run him again in bottomless ground and I'm going to stick to that this time.

"They wouldn't take each other on at this stage of the season anyway, and if it came up very heavy we could reroute Harchibald to the Fighting Fifth the following weekend - but whether Iktitaf would run instead I'm not so sure. We'll wait till later in the week to see how things shape up."

Tom Mullins is in no hurry about making a decision on his star mare Asian Maze.

She has not been seen since trailing home last at Auteuil in May but had previously landed a Grade 1 double at the Aintree and Punchestown Festivals.

"Everything's super with her," said Mullins. We'll make a decision at the end of the week - I just want to see what the shape of the race is like after the forfeit.

"She'll need the run, but she'll run there or in the Hatton's Grace (at Fairyhouse on December 3) - or she might run in both. I'll take things one day at a time with her but hopefully one of these two - the Morgiana and the Hatton's Grace - will set her up for something over Christmas."

Morgiana Hurdle

Cashmans 2 Brave Inca, 5-2 Asian Maze, 3 Harchibald, Hardy Eustace, 7 Newmill, 100 Silent Oscar

Paddy Power 6-4 Brave Inca, 7-4 Harchibald, 5 Asian Maze, Newmill, 6 (with a run) Hardy Eustace, 50 Silent Oscar.
