BLACK JACK KETCHUM will not be making his handicap debut at Haydock on Saturday after trainer Jonjo O’Neill decided against running his star performer off 11st 12lb in testing ground.

The unbeaten ante-post favourite for the Ladbrokes World Hurdle features among 36 entries for the Betfair Handicap Hurdle over an extended 2m7f, but is now likely to wait a further week before trying for win number eight.

“Black Jack Ketchum will not run at Haydock on Saturday,” said O’Neill, “as unfortunately his blood has not quite tested right.

“Hopefully, he will beokay to run at Newbury the following week .”

Ground conditions are likely to determine whether last season’s World Hurdle winner, My Way De Solzen, makes his eagerly awaited debut over fences at Aintree on Sunday.

Alan King's top-class hurdler holds an entry in the Amberleigh House Novices' Chase over 2m - one of several races being considered for the six-year-old.

However, soft going is required for the Assessor gelding, who made his seasonal reappearance at Wetherby last month when runner-up to Redemption in the John Smith's West Yorkshire Hurdle. "We've not discussed it with Alan yet as to whether we do go this weekend or not,” said joint owner Jerry Wright.

“A lot depends on what happens with the going over the next 24 to 48 hours or so," continued Wright. "It's well documented that the horse has a strong preference for soft ground and we don't want to be restricted to just one option for him.

"There are a couple of other beginners' chases for him in the next week to ten days. As Alan said earlier in the week, the horse will only just be ready for Sunday and we will leave the decision entirely to him. The plan is to get him out in the next ten days, depending on the ground."

Thegoing at Aintree was described on Thursday as good, with rain forecast.

Although My Way De Solzen's World Hurdle success was over 3m, connections are not concerned about dropping him back in trip.

"He has plenty of natural speed and Alan wants to start his chase career over shorter trips as he doesn't want to blunt his speed," Wright continued.

"Generally, he'll be running over two or two and a half miles. It's unlikely you'll see him over further this season. We bought him as a chaser and everything that has happened so far before has been a very large bonus.”

Cheers Steve :p I was hoping it would be a chase.

As soon as he's a definitely confirmed runner I'll explain to everyone the very strange reason why I think he might be worth a small bet. It's pretty unique, but have seen it work before on rare occasions.......;)

It was 6 lengths. Definitely a mortgage bet that was. I was going to put it in the Goldmine, but then I remembered that I'd banned myself from that thread.

I told everyone in the shop that Harry's House wouldn't win the 3.20 at Ascot, and that I fancied Harris Bay.

I think I was the only one that backed it though. 8/1. Result!

Some great news on the horse front:

http://www.racingpost.co.uk/images/graphics/fondmort_well_A510.jpg

Fondmort looked in superb condition when pictured yesterday alongside trainer Nicky Henderson and (from left) nurse Sarah Mason, vet Jo Robins and head nurse Hannah Williams at the Ridgeway Veterinary Group's Lambourn equine hospital.

Henderson, whose stable star fractured a pelvis on the gallops last week, praised the hospital's staff, and said: "He's still on a 24-hour watch but he's just started eating solids again and looks fantastic.

"The thing that everyone says is that very few horses would have come through this. It's testament to his courage and his temperament."

THEREALBANDIT has been put down after fracturing his pelvis at David Pipe's yard.

The nine-year-old won nine of his 26 starts and £171,741 in win and place prize moneywhen trained by Pipe's father Martin, enjoying a career highlight last season when winning the Rowland Meyrick Chase at Wetherby. He also had a fine record at Cheltenham, winning the Mears Group Chase there in 2004 and the Lombard Properties Handicap Hurdle the previous year. Chester Barnes told www.davidpipe.com: "He fractured his pelvis and all possibleefforts were made to save him but his condition deteriorated and we had to make the kindest decision for him.

"He was a huge favourite in the yard and will be enormously missed by everyone. He was a real gentleman. The yard has lost a true friend andhe will always be remembered."

Hughes considers Ascot return for Hardy Eustace

http://www.racingpost.co.uk/images/graphics/hardy_eustace510.jpg

DESSIE HUGHES’S outspoken criticism of the ground for Cheltenham’s Open meeting was repeated on Sunday as he hinted that the dual Champion Hurdle winner may bypass the next meeting in favour of a return to Ascot.

The Boylesports.com International Hurdle, formerly the Bula, at Cheltenham on December 9 remains a possible target although Hughes has identified a race over 3m1f following the nine year old's convincing win in the Coral Ascot Hurdle at Saturday.

Hughes, who on Saturday described the going at Chetlenham’s last meeting as “a disgrace”, said on Sunday: "Obviously the huge prize-money makes the Cheltenham race very tempting, but for Hardy Eustace to go there the ground would need to be an awful lot better than it was for the Open meeting.

“The ground thatday was desperate after all the water they put on it.

"We'll wait and see, but the BGC Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot on December 16 is a possible alternative. “The ground might be a lot better there and I wouldn't mind running him over three miles and a furlong."

Hardy Eustace has only one run over further than 3m in his glittering career. The race was the 3m1/2f Sefton Novices’ Hurdle at the 2003 Grand National meeting where he was beaten a distance when fifth to Iris’s Gift.

Hughes added: "The Ascot race would also give us an extra week before sending him back to England."

However, Hughes confirmed that whatever trip Hardy Eustace runs over next time his season will be geared towards the Cheltenham Festival and an attempt to regain the title he lost to Brave Inca in March.

"Wherever he goes in the meantime, the Champion Hurdle is the race we are aiming at," said Hughes.

Hardy Eustace is a 16-1 shot for the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle in March.

A BETFAIR player lost £237,000 on Saturday night when laying winning favourite Peregrine Falcon at odds of up to 1,000-1 in a maiden race at Wolverhampton.

The punter was taken on by three others - including one who traded £209.79 - before the Mark Johnston-trained two-year-old landed the 1m contest.

That transaction cost the layer over £200,000, having been confirmed and authorised inside the opening furlong, yet Peregrine Falcon was returned at an SP of just 15-8.

Betfair spokesman Tony Calvin said on Sunday: "It looks as if the layer simply made a mistake, as all prices matched have to be confirmed before they are traded. "The only alternative I could imagine is that the layer was using an automatic trading system and that there was some kind of problem with it."

Betfair punters have to lodge sufficientfunds in advance to cover the trades they make, a fact which suggests the layer concerned is a large and regular player.

Calvin added: "Obviously, I cannot reveal the names of any of our clients, but nothing untoward is considered to have taken place, other than a genuine error on someone's part."

News on the Henessy Gold Cup

CONNECTIONS of Star DeMohaison said on Monday that there was no rift over running plans following the news that the ante-post favourite would miss Saturday’s Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury.

Trainer Paul Nicholls had made no secret of his desire to run the five-year-old, winner of the big staying novice chases at Cheltenham and Aintree last season, but was told in a phone call from owner Sir Robert Ogden on Monday morning that the Hennessy was not an option.

Star De Mohaison had been Hennessy favourite since running away with a handicap hurdle at Cheltenham's Open meeting this month and most bookmakers described yesterday’s decision as a blow for punters.

David Williams, representing Ladbrokes, said: "Punters didn't stop steaming into him, despite the question marks remaining over his participation after Cheltenham. He was easily going to be our worst result of the race."

Star De Mohaison was “probably the best backed” in Corals’ ante-post book, while VCbet also had plenty of money for him although William Hill claimed that a win for Star de Mohaison would not have been a bad result.

However, Ogden's racing manager Barry Simpson said that carrying 11st 11lb in Saturday's race would have been too much for the horse at this stage.

"We want to give him time todevelop into what we hope is a Gold Cup horse either this year, next year or in two years time,” said Simpson.

“He is only five and it would have been a big ask for a second-season chaser.

"The plan is to run in an intermediate chase Sandown on December 1 and then to run in one of the trials in the new year. Races like the Letheby and Christopher and the Aon would be the races we would be looking at.

"At this moment in time, the King George is not a target unless the situation changes in the meantime."

Simpson was keen to emphasise that there was no ill feeling with Nicholls over the decision. He said: "There has been no falling out over this and we don't want it portrayed as if there is an issue over this because there is not.

“Everyone was aware that Paul favoured going to the Hennessy and I wasn't privy to the conversation between Paul and Sir Robert, but I spoke to Sir Robert afterwards and he said that Paul was absolutely fine about it.

"We respect Paul's ability totrain and I think Paul respects Sir Robert's point of view."

Nicholls, who has won the Hennessy twice as a jockey and once as a trainer, yesterday moved to draw a line under the matter.

He said: "I spoke to Sir Robert this morning and he explained why he didn't want to run in the race. At the end of the day he pays the bills and it is his decision."

Ruby Walsh will now switch to top weight Cornish Rebel, with Paddy Merrigan aboard stablemate Napolitain.

Of the yard's other Hennessy possibles, Neptunes Collonges will run in Newcastle’s Rehearsal Chase with Liam Heard on board while Ladalko will wait for Sandown the following week.

Nicholls will be represented by Gungadu in the Unicoin Homes Novices' Chase over 3m at Newbury on Friday with Royal & SunAlliance Chase favourite Denman, who is also entered for that race, waiting for Sunday's Stan James Berkshire Novices' Chase over 2m4f, providing ground conditions do not quicken up.

Cornish Rebel headed the list of 27 horses confirmed for the 50th running of the Hennessy yesterday in which Turpin Green, who will be ridden by Tony Dobbin, now heads the betting with William Hill and Totesport at 11-2 and 6-1 respectively.

A three-strong Irish entry is likely to be reduced to one at the most on the day with Southern Vic and Homer Wells likely to go for the Troytown Chase at Navan the following day.

Homer Wells's trainer Willie Mullins also has Bothar Na in the race and added: "The likelihood of better ground at Newbury would make Bothar Na the more likely to run in the Hennessy. Homer Wells wants it testing, so he will probably go to Navan."

Drever features in Newbury list

http://www.racingpost.co.uk/images/graphics/inglis_drever510.jpg

INGLIS DREVER, the 2005 BHB Order of Merit winner and top staying hurdler, is among the entries for the Grade 2 Long Distance Hurdle that he won last year before a tendon injury ruled him out for the rest of the season.

The VC Casino.com-sponsored race over 3m 1/2f at Newbury on Saturday also features last season's unbeaten staying novice Black Jack Ketchum, who like Inglis Drever is a seven-year-old, and younger French challenger Yaiyad among the 13 five-day entries.

No decision has been made as to whether Inglis Drever, the 2005 World Hurdle winner, will start his comeback in the race he justified odds-on favouritism to beat Baracouda and confirm his champion's status before a tendon injury in his fall in the transferred Long Walk Hurdle at Chepstow the following month ended his season.

Black Jack Ketchum, winner of all his seven races and who has bypassed a number of similar contests for his seasonal return, is one of three entries from the Jonjo O'Neill stable, all owned by Gay Smith. Redemption, who beat this year's World Hurdle winner My Way de Solzen in the Grade 2 West Yorkshire Hurdle at Wetherby, is another entry after pulling up under top weight in the Listed hurdle won by Star de Mohaison at the Paddy Power meeting.

My Way de Solzen is likely to make his British chasing debut at Lingfield on Thursday after bypassing Aintree for more testing ground in the south.

Trainer Alan King, who has also given him an entry at Newvbury over the weekend, said on Monday: "All tnings being equal he will go to Lingfield.I have been very happy with him and he has schooled very well.

"The ground wasn't soft enough for him at Aintree but it should be fine for him at Lingfield."

My Way de Solzen, 10-1 second favourite for the Arkle with Coral and Vcbet and 12-1 for the SunAlliance generally, was pulled up at Dieppe in a non-thoroughbreds race when facing French fences as a four-year-old.

Lennon and Glenfinn Captain have just as good claims imo and interesting support for Acambo too. I know the latter was fancied before being withdrawn when it was due to run last. Race isn't one to bet on at the moment with no outstanding contender. The other 3 you have are all pretty special and cant really be opposed, Fair along can be.

Firsly - Anti post betting its a gamble u take. Which the 4 horse ive done 99% will run. unless they get injured.Lennon's gone off to a great start this season 2 starts two wins.

Contraband hasnt done must since winning the Arkle two years ago - I know it was out for most of last season. two starts this season one time 4/9 got turnt over and the other was saturday was 8's only to come 5th.which i couldnt see it winning

Im waiting for the Well Cheif to return to trackside.. still a young horse.which was out for the whole of last season.:(

Standing Obligation is the for the Pipe yard this year.

Dont disagree - but with all bar fair along you can almost gurantee that they will go off shorter on the day, which is the main reason for an anti post. At the moment i dont expect fair along to shorten much, if any, and hence potentially bad value for anti post purposes given if it doesn't run then you've done your dough. That said i expect fair along to be up there, just not yet an anti post bet for me. Good luck with your bet though - i certainly wouldn't want to lay it :p

Contraband is a right dodgepot now - ran an absolute stinker the other day - i wouldnt back him with your money! My point was the yard can ready one if they want.

I hope Well Chief comes back the same horse, fingers crossed.

Standing Obligation is a good horse, that was well fancied before hand.

Didn't like to say this, but as Hakers has raised it I will. I would seriously try and cut down on it a bit. If Dave comes on to this thread and sees how often you do it, he'll have a fit.

The alternative (which he prefers) is for you just to provide the link, as that doesn't drain the BBS memory.

Hope you didn't mind me just mentioning it.

Missed That suffers fatal injury

MISSED THAT, three times a winner in Grade 1 company, has suffered a fatal injury at Willie Mullins' yard.

The seven-year-old, winner of the 2005 Champion Bumper at Cheltenham as well as the Durkan New Homes Novice Chase and Irish Arkle, was a general 20-1 chance for totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup this term.

However, Mullins has confirmed that Missed That broke his pelvis in a mishap at his County Carlow base. "He broke his pelvis and we think breaking it may have severed an artery," explained the trainer.

Missed That, who was owned by Violet O'Leary and ran in the colours made famous by Florida Pearl, won seven of his 12 starts and was last seen when taking a Grade Two event at Punchestown in April.

Inglis Drever vs Black Jack could be on at Newbury

What a race that will be :p

THE clash between Inglis Drever and Black Jack Ketchum drew a step closer yesterday as connections of the two top-class hurdlers set their sights on the VC Casino.com Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury on Saturday.

The Howard Johnson-trained Inglis Drever (pictured above) landed the World Hurdle at the 2005 Cheltenham Festival before finding Al Eile too strong at Aintree the following month.

However, a strained tendon sustained in a fall in the Long Walk Hurdle at Chepstow last December cut short his campaign last season and he has not been sighted since.

Owner Graham Wylie said on Wednesday: “Certainly Drever will be running. He's a happy horse, his ears are pricked and he's very happy in the stables. I think he's so fresh that we just need to give him a run.

"He could need the run on Saturday as he's been off with a leg injury but he's just so full of himself that we thought we'd get him out and see how he gets on."

Also entered in the £40,000 affair is the Wylie-owned No Refuge, who finished fourthto Hardy Eustace at Ascot on Saturday.

"He had a race last week at Ascot and Timmy Murphy said he led him all over the place," Wylie told Racing UK. "I think he is more of a two-and-a-half-mile specialist. We tried him at Wetherby over three miles and he didn't quite get the trip, so I think we'll keep him to two and a half miles now."

Connections of Black Jack Ketchum are keen to run the World Hurdle ante-post favourite, although definite plans will be dependent on the ground and a satisfactory blood test.

Last season's Brit Insurance Novices' Hurdle winner at the Festival was withdrawn from an engagement at Haydock last weekend due to an unsatisfactory blood count, but he is fit and ready for a run provided he is found to have fully recovered from that slight setback.

Clerk of the course Richard Osgood said yesterday that jump jockey Andrew Thornton and respected groundsman Reg Lomas had walked the track and had given the racing surface the thumbs up.

Osgood said: “Reg Lomas walked the track on behalf of Jonjo O’Neill and said he would be reporting back that it was in great condition.

“The official going is good to soft with the forecast unsettled for the next 48 hours

Unsatisfactory blood count sees Black Jack miss latest target

THE thousands of punters who are looking for Black Jack Ketchum to rack up points for them in this season’s Totesport/Racing Post Ten To Follow competition will have to wait a while longer after the exciting hurdler was ruled out of a tilt at Saturday afternoon’s Long Distance Hurdle.

The seven-year-old had been widely anticipated to make his seasonal return in the VCbet-sponsored race, however the Ladbrokes World Hurdle favourite was scratched from the race after trainer Jonjo O’Neill spoke of an unsatisfactory blood count.

Black Jack Ketchum missed an engagement at Haydock seven days ago for the same reason, and O'Neill said: "He's grand, but his blood is just not right. I don't know where he'll run next."

Although plans for Gay Smith’s unbeaten hurdler remain fluid, connections have long intended on running him three times this season, culminating in the Cheltenham contest for which he is as short as 11-8 with Sky Bet and William Hill, so the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot on December 16 could be a starting point. Distant Thunder, well backed during the week for the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup, misses the race after returning a dirty scope on Friday.

His trainer Noel Chance said: “It’s very frustrating because the soft ground would beideal and the Hennessy has been his target for some while. We’ll now look towards the Welsh National, and he may run beforehand at Cheltenham on December 8.”

A trip to Cheltenham the following day for the Boylesports.con Gold Cup looks on the cards for the Tony Martin-trained Ross River, a 10-1 shot with the sponsors.

Martin said: “We'll have a look at the race closely and it's a big possibility. There are a couple of options at Leopardstown over Christmas so I'd be waiting until next Saturday before committing to any plans."

The jockey didn't give him the best of rides, but he seemed a bit outpaced to me anyway. You know the horse better than me but maybe needs a couple of extra furlongs?

LLCOOLSTEVE
25-11-2006, 05:19 PM
Quite possibly, always finishes over 10 furlongs very strongly, just missed out on 3rd which was a shame, surprised at the big drift though, jockey was ok, his run style means he needs to be dropped out, maybe he let them get away a bit too early... and had to come very wide round the last bend.

Get the money back on Lake Shabla in the 9.30 at Wolves, Brett Doyle gon all the way up there from Lingfield, via Kempton, for 2 rides in the last 2 races at Wolves, but think the main reason is for Lake Shabla. I see Eccollo broke a leg and was presumably put down. I know he racked up a string of wins off his low mark but I can't help thinking that the Owners/Trainers shouldn't allowed to make the horse run so often in such a short space of time. :(

Dilemmas On Oaks mark

Nick Savva, successful with Westmead Hawk in the William Hill Derby in June, completed the big Classic double when Dilemmas Flight landed the bitches' equivalent, the William Hill Oaks, over 480 metres at Wimbledon Tuesday night, writes Richard Birch.
In a pulsating finale up the home straight, three top-class bitches Dilemmas Flight, Cleenas Lady and Jazz Hurricane were locked in battle.
The picture changed time and time again, but near the line it was the stamina of Dilemmas Flight, a December '04 daughter of Droopys Vieri, owned by the Elias family, which proved decisive.
She beat 11-8 favourite Cleenas Lady, who had led briefly after the penultimate bend, by a length, with Jazz Hurricane, the William Hill St Leger semi-finalist, giving another terrific account of herself in third. The winning time was 28.96sec.
Savva, sending out his fourth Oaks winner - Westmead Chick, Annies Bullet and Sarah Dee were the others - wasn't at Wimbledon to greet his latest winner, but Andy Elias said: "It was a fantastic run from such a young bitch. She's won the Produce; now she's won the Oaks. It's another great triumph for Nick."
Looking ahead to next year's Classics, it will be no surprise to see Masterpiece, a March '05 son of Droopys Corleone who won the puppy open over 460 metres, return to Wimbledon for the 2007 Derby.
TheReading-based black showed enough early pace to hold a good pitch out of the second bend, and then produced a blitz finish to foil Charlie Lister's Maltese Calv right on the line in a useful 27.75sec.
Generous Man, fought off the track in the first round of the Grand National, produced an exhibition round of fast, fluent jumping to win the 460 metres hurdles event, showing what he's truly capable of.
After watching Brian Clemenson's wide come home two lengths clear of Broadacres Dan in 28.48sec, owner Ron Brooker said: "The National was a disaster. Brian felt he really had him on the boil for that, but it just wasn't to be."

Black Jack return is on the cards for Saturday

BLACK JACK KETCHUM, the unbeaten superstar twice denied a start to what is hoped to be a championship winning season, is all set to make a belated return to action at Cheltenham on Saturday.

Trainer Jonjo O’Neill on Sunday pointed the exciting winner of all seven career starts toward the Grade 2 Mears Group ‘Relkeel’ Hurdle over 2m 5 1/2f as the first step on the road to the Ladbrokes World Hurdle in March.

An unsatisfactory blood count ruled out a return in the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury last month, as it did a handicap hurdle at Haydock the previous week, but O’Neill is as sure as he can be that the most popular horse in the £1 million Totesport/Racing Post Ten To Follow competition will be back this weekend.

“Black Jack Ketchum seems in grand old form at home and hopefully whatever the disorder was he’s over it,” said O’Neill.

“The plan is to go to Cheltenham for the Relkeel Hurdle as long as the ground is not desperate as we would not want to be running him on heavy.

“If the ground was bad at Cheltenham we might have to consider waiting for the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot a week later but Cheltenham is the aim.”

O’Neill also intends to bring back Paddy Power Gold Cup winner Exotic Dancer at Cheltenham on Saturday in the Boylesports.com Gold Cup, for which he is 8-1 joint second favourite with the sponsors. He will be joined by Hasty Prince, while O’Neill also intends to run Don’t Push it and newcower Mountain, eighth to Sir Percy in the Derby, at the meeting.

The trainer added: “Exotic Dancer and Hasty Prince are both well in themselves and I am hopeful of big runs from the pair in the Boylesports.com Gold Cup.

“I was very pleased with the way Don’t Push it ran at Cheltenham last month when he was beaten by Denman as he made a mistakewhen coming to challenge but still stayed on all the way to the line.

“Mountain seems a nice horse who has jumped hurdles well at home so I don’t foresee a problem there.”

Exotic Dancer’s owner Sir Robert Ogden has a possible second string to hisbow in Calling Brave, trained by Nicky Henderson. The ten-year-old, last seen finishing a distant seventh in the Betfred Gold Cup at Sandown in April, is towards the bottom of the handicap on 10st 3lb.

"Calling Brave has been a little slowto get going this season," said Sir Robert’s racing manager Barry Simpson.

"He didn't come back from Sir Robert's until quite late. He's dropped down the weights a bit and he will be interesting when he gets going. He had a wind operation in the summer but it was minor."

Like the rest of Britain, Cheltenham racecourse was battered by 70mph winds on Saturday night resulting in flattened running rails and jump sidewings, as well as a severed power supply, but all will be back to normal long before the start of the Boylesports International meeting on Friday.

Simon Claisse, clerk of the course, said repairs would be completed by Monday night, although more storms are forecast for the Cotwolds on Wednesday.

Racing will take place on the New Course, not used since the hunter chase meeting in May, and Claisse said the ground was officially good to soft. It was also the same on the cross-country course, the stage for a 3m7f handicap chase on the opening day.
Henderson said on Sunday that of histhree entries in Friday’s most valuable race, the £100,000 Boylepoker.com Handicap Chase, his most likely representative was Liberthine, last season’s Topham Chase winner.

The mare, unlucky in the corresponding chase 12 months ago, travelling strongly when unseating Sam Waley-Cohen three fences from home, was retired after the Betfred Gold Cup in April only to return to training at Seven Barrows in late summer having failed to conceive at stud in France when covered by Poliglote.

Henderson also has Copsale Lad and Juveigneur engaged, but they are likely to take up other assignments. If the ground is good at Cheltenham on Saturday, Copsale Lad will take his chance in the £150,000 Boylesports.com Gold Cup.

The nine-year-old was heavily backed for last month’s Paddy Power Gold Cup, but was brought to a standstill by the fall of Knowhere at the eighth fence and was pulled up.

Juveigneur, runner-up in the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup, is likely to be kept back for Coral Chepstow’s Welsh National on December 27.

Celestial Gold out for the season

LEADING chaser Celestial Gold is out for the season after heat was found in his leg.

The David Pipe-trained eight-year-old, impressive winner of the Betfair Bowl Chase at the Grand National meeting in April, was a 14-1 chance with sponsors Stan James for the King George VI Chase and 20-1 with Totesport for the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Assistant trainer Chester Barnes told www.davidpipe.com: "Some heat was discovered in his leg and the veterinary advice is to stop with him. He is still sound and being ridden out, but he is too good a horse to risk and will not race again until next season.

"Although very disappointing, the good news is that it is very minor and we still have a very good horse to look forward to next year's big races."

City odds-on favourite for International

Boylesports.com International Sponsors: 4-9 Detroit City,5-2 Hardy Eustace, 12-1 Arcalis, 20-1 Blazing Bailey, 25-1 Mephisto, 50-1 Crow Wood

DETROIT CITY was on Tuesday installed an odds-on favourite to maintain his impressive start to the season with a victory over double Champion Hurdle winner Hardy Eustace at Cheltenham on Saturday.

In the opening show on the Boylesports.com International the sponsors quote the grey as the 4-9 favourite to get the better of Hardy Eustace, who is a 5-2 chance in the race formerly run as the Bula Hurdle.

The Grade 2 race produced no further entries and three of the nine engaged, Brave Inca, Asian Maze and Al Eile, are all declared to contest Wednesday’s rescheduled Ballymore Properties Hatton’s Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse.

Malton-based trainer John Quinn will aim to plunder some of the £200,000 on offer by saddling Crow Wood, who was due to meet Detroit City in the Greatwood Hurdle.

Crow Wood was withdrawn because of the ground and having seen Detroit City demolish the field in which Quinn trained both third and fourth, the trainer rates Crow Wood only an each-way prospect despite his earlier defeat of Desert Quest in the Elite Hurdle. The seven-year-old was a last-time-out sixth behind Straw Bear in the Fighting Fifth.

“The plan is to run Crow Wood on Saturday,” said Quinn. “I was a bit disappointed with his run last time, but the ground was too soft for him, and he probably wasn'tgood enough to tell you the truth. “He's come out of the race well though and he seems fine. Being realistic, however, you would have to say he has no more than an each-way chance. The principals will be very hard to beat - I've been very impressed with Detroit City this year and he looks the best hurdler about at the moment.

“I'm not sure about future plans for our horse. I had thought about going novice chasing but the owner wasn't that keen. We'll see how he runs on Saturday first.”

Howard Johnson has entered both Arcalis and Mephisto and could run the first-named, who finished fourth behind Straw Bear, if he works satisfactorily on Tuesday.

“I will just run one probably,” he said. “Probably Arcalis. I was pleased enough with him at Newcastle. It’s just the weather is that bad at the minute. I will have a few runners at the meeting. We will see how they train in the morning. We will plan after Hexham. If that’s off then The Reverend might go down there on Friday.”

Johnson had entered both No Refuge and Mephisto in the Mears Group Relkeel Hurdle but neither are qualified to run, which is likely to ensure the unbeaten Black Jack Ketchum also starts at prohibitive odds.

Surprise gamble for Bannow Strand

DAVID JOHNSON looked to put one over the bookmakers on Thursday as a surprise gamble developed on his Bannow Strand for the Boylesports.com Gold Cup.

The David Pipe-trained Commercial Flyer had been generally expected to carry the champion jumps owners’ colours on Saturday and as such was 6-1 co-favourite for the £150,000 Cheltenham race with Skybet on Thursday morning.

But the seven-year-old was declared instead for a race on Thursday’s card and ante-post attention switched to Bannow Strand, who has not run since he was pulled up in Racing Post Plate at Cheltenham last March but whose odds were cut from as big as 33-1 in places to as short as 10-1 in one list, with Johnson admitting to having backed the six-year-old himself.

“Bannow Strand is definitely an intended runner, he is nicely weighted,” the owner said on At The Races on Thursday.

“He came with a big reputation from Ireland. I suppose he was somewhat disappointing early on but he won a couple of nice races at the back-end of last year. He is very, very well at home.

“It is very, very competitive of course but I had a little bit of an interest on him this morning. I had a small bet each-way. “We had a long deliberation over Commercial Flyer and thought that he’d be better suited over three and a bit miles. It’s a £100,000 race and we just thought we had more chance of winning this than we did of winning the other. To be honest, he didn’t fulfil what we’d hoped last year but he had a few niggling problems that I think David and Martin have probably now overcome those.”

Johnson is bidding for a first win in the Boylesports.com Gold Cup, though his Our Vic was in front when he fell at the last in 2004, and trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies is also full of hope that he can break his duck with Knowhere, who led until falling at the eighth in last month’s Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

“It is a very tricky fence down there and he took his eye off it,” recalled Twiston-Davies, whose Tipping Tim and Young Hustler were both placed in this contest in the early-1990s.

“Funnily enough he didn’t jump well when he ran at Ascot next time but we have schooled him a lot since and he has been very, very good so I would hope for a big run. I am feeling quite confident.

Cant have KFF at the price it is - Tidal is very well thought off at home, has run very well in soft/heavy ground and has already beat KFF. They should be a lot closer in the betting.

Great selection in the first Zoom.

THE JOY OF SIX!

http://www.racingpost.co.uk/images/graphics/plum_spot510.jpg

SPOT THEDIFFERENCE (pictured far right) made it six wins overCheltenham’s unique array of 32 cross-country fences in the hands of regular partner JT McNamara - the big surprise being the generous starting price of 6-1 on Friday.

JP McManus’s pride and joy, 13 going on 14, will now be trained with another win around the circuit at the Cheltenham Festival next March in mind before a well-earned retirement beckons.

Having been taken on up front by French raider Plum’tee for much of the Sporting Index-sponsored race, Spot Thedifference had to call on all his strength and determination to hit the front again going to the last and scoring all out by a length.

It was another length and a quarter back in third spot to 100-30 favourite Heads On The Ground who, like the winner, sported the McManus silks and is trained by Enda Bolger at Bruree, County Limerick.

Bolger was understandably delighted with yet another cross-country win for his evergreen star saying: “It’s amazing. A horse of his age with the soft ground against him and he has doddled up. What do you say? “I rode him out on the course yesterday and we got caught in a heavy shower with the wind howling.

“He hated it and I told JP that if the horse was a human being he would be using some very colourful language.

“But John Thomas has given him a really good ride out there and the two seem to hit it off and the plan will be to come back here in March for another of these which he won two years ago.”

However, Bolger added: “That race could well be his swansong though as he will be 14 years old then and does not owe anybody anything.”

I had picked it out in the morning, thought it was massively overpriced on what he has done before against a stupidly short priced fav. Had backed it then heard a 'whisper' for it so stuck a little more on. Had it been 'inside' i'd have had a fair bit more on it.

Re Tidal Bay, as mentioned before, I have had proper info on it in the past (although not today), and fancied it to beat KFF today.

I see. Was basically a '1pt ew' bet for me. I couldn't see it finishing outside of the top 4, had there only have been 15 runners i'd have only gone 1/2 pt ew. The max i'd go to is 5 points win or 2.5 ew. A 'normal' bet would be a 1/2 pt ew, a stronger fancy 1 pt ew, info bet 1.5 to 2 pts ew up to a max of 2.5 (depending on what i hear and from what source). If price less than about 7/2 i tend to just do win only (on the same scale). Dont tend to do any higher than 2.5point per outcome on a horse but have done the whole 5 on a win before (i've had 5 max bets over the last 5 months, 4 of which have won).

How much per point depends on how well i'm doing, at the moment it is a ton, and that is the highest i'll go to. I tend to review weekly.

Its form is patchy though, yes was a good flat horse, but didnt see out a couple of trips so im surprised at how well it bounded up that hill.

hakers
09-12-2006, 12:38 AM
Fom patchy maybe, but depends on how you read it (and to be fair everyone reads it differently), and also in relation to the other horses in the field. He also runs well fresh which was another factor for me. IMO in the context of that race alone i thought it was a strong ew bet (at 4 places), and that it was overpriced at 20/1.

If we are talking the festival then Black Jack yes, Detroit I'm personally not so sure. Yesterdays race was interesting but i think one jockey beat the other rather than one horse beating the other - Detroit was given a better ride IMO. Another 50-100 yards and Hardy would have got up and beat him (or at least we would have seen how Detroit battled back). That said, the race didn't suit either so is hard to tell - neither lost anything yesterday, but IMHO neither really gained anything either (ie in no way am i more encouraged to back Detroit, if anything i am more likely to go against him for the Champion).

BJK on the other hand was unbelievably impressive, was a slight doubt with the ground which is why i had a small bet on Bailey just in case, but he blew those doubts out the water. It would be a major major shock if he didnt win at cheltenham.

CHERRY TREE BRB
10-12-2006, 11:42 AM
Agree with some of what you said, saying that though yesterday was basically a match, a tactical affair whatever you want to call it, will and has suited Detroit in a 'real' race, the course from speaks for itself, Im just praying neither of them get injured, Im more worried about that, because I think they'll both win in March.

Day started ok, Labelthou let me down for a yankee, and football wise, Southampton for a nice little acca too.

Justified, Hi Cloy and Nickname the 1-2-3 this afternoon, wonder what price Kauto will be if War of Attrition blows up again

I agree.

I didnt like Detroit Citys performance yesterday, looked a bit iffy, yes it was a tactical affair and there was no strong Gallop unlike the Champion Hurdle but to only beat Hardy by a length when getting 4lbs doesnt sit well with me, something will beat Detroit City come March.

Swift odds-on at Festival

WESTMEAD SWIFT is odds-on for the Ladbrokes Christmas Festival Stayers final over 630m at Monmore on Friday after a sparkling performance in the heats at the Wolverhampton track yesterday afternoon.
Nick Savva’s bitch was in front early in the opening heat and pulled further away with every stride, eventually coming home seven lengths to the good of a staying-on Fabulous Sophie in 37.99sec.
Punters were on the back foot in the other two heats starting with the 10-1 victory of Lady Three Star (38.67sec) over a disappointing Spiridon Louis in the second and quickly followed by the 12-1 all-the-way success for Jethart Joe (38.27sec) from Westmead Olivia in the third.
Courts Ad Be, Raging Jack and Ronnies Hare were respectively quickest in the supporting Bitches, Dogs and Sprint competitions
*Draw for Friday’s £5,000 Ladbrokes Christmas Festival Stayers final (with betting from the sponsor):

1 Fabulous Sophie (8), 2 Spiridon Louis (5), 3 Westmead Swift (m)(8-11), 4 Jethart Joe (m)(12), 5 Westmead Olivia (w)(11-4), 6 Lady Three Star (w)(16).

Bitches: 1 Fourcuil Moth, 2 Bangor April, 3 Breeze Hill Juli, 4 Corleones Flyer (w), 5Adamant Lady (w), 6 Courts Ad Be (w).

It would definitly have a decent chance, may be favourite, depends what else runs from the declared runners, from the all conquering Paul Nicholls stable and Ruby will probably ride. Mighty Man, No refuge and Redemption are all entitled to respect though

Come 2nd to my 20/1 winner last time out. Has a decent shout but the fact he is running from out of the handicap and only 8 days since his last run puts me off a bit. There will be worst 18/1 shots though.

I only ever lay horses over the jumps, rather than back them to win. And in doing that I avoid the top meetings like Ascot. But over the last 3 days I've layed against 9 horses, and all of them have lost - the best run of lays that I've had.

Horses have been going off at ridiculously low odds in heavy going. Just take as one example from today the 13:00 race at Haydock. It's a handicap, so in theory at least the handicapper has tried to weight them so that they all finish equal. Ok, that's not possible, but it's still worth bearing in mind when you weigh up whether odds represent value. Yet in a field of 12 runners on heavy, unpredictable going Albertas Run goes off at 4/6 - a totally ludicrous price, and a very obvious lay.

The stupidity of some punters never ceases to amaze me. (None on this board I hope :p )

Fallon speaks :)

"Next year, I will be better than ever. I have never been more hungry; and I am determined to repay Coolmore for standing by me. I have ridden well over the last couple of years, but still made the odd mental error. But now I am going to be sharper than ever, because I will appreciate and enjoy being able to ride those good horses all the more.

"The important thing hasbeen to stay in touch . When I ride out, it is not just my horse I try to learn about, but all those around it. That is something you might not realise, but I try to learn every little thing about them every day."

For what it is worth, Fallon sounded exactly as he spoke. He was serious in tone but not guarded in revealing his feelings. Nevertheless, his situation is not one over which to be glib and neither is he treating it that way.

I don't play the laying game but for those of you that do, the 5.50 at Wolverhampton has caught my eye.

They call Flame Creek the favourite and the Racing Post "experts" say that he's looking well handicapped, whereas the handicapper has allegedly caught up with Billich.

On Nov 27th, Billich beat Flame Creek (albeit over 2 furlong shorter) and is a whopping 15lbs better off with him today. How the •••• can Flame Creek be "well-handicapped" and Billich not?

Add in the fact that you have Market Watcher running for you (who has won his last two races very easily) and a couple of others that have some form, then I reckon Flame Creek is eminently beatable.

Which it failed to the only time he has run there - the 'mistake' at the last today 'could' have been down to a loose bit of ground he landed in just as he was about to take off. If he makes a mistake like he did at the forth last at cheltenham Ruby will be on the deck, the fences at Kempton are 'easier' the plough through which is why he not away with it.

No doubt that the horse has a serious engine in him, one of the best in all honesty, he won easily with the mistake - he can not afford however to make the mistake he did at cheltenham though.

12.35 - Khyber Kim non runner - went with blyth knight e/w. didn't fancy KFF but by all account bust a blood vessal so can be forgiven such a poor run
1.10 - Yes Sir what can i say - VERY disappointed with his run
1.45 - Afsoun going well when a poor jump brought him down - didnt fancy SB today, especially at the price
2.20 - Racing Demon always up against it but ran well enough in defeat - better price than i expected and still profit. no matter how good a horse is, cant be backing at the odds of KS
3.00 - Craven changed my mind on this due to gamble and backed oedipe instead which hacked up.
3.30 - Maharbal (but only if not weak in the betting) was backed in end so got on - won very well.
