Thanks. Hope the following might help people.
There is no better combo than O'Neill and McCoy, but the public sometimes take that to extremes. This horse was first time out, and running in a (very poor) maiden hurdle. Yet due to the combo, it opened last night around 2/1 favourite. That seemed very odd unless it had been doing something special at home. Normally, I would monitor the betting trends about mid-morning to see if connections had started putting money on it, and then use that as a guide as to whether it was a safe lay. But on this occasion, I couldn't believe that if the horse had showed anything, O'Neill would run it in such a poor race. I was so convinced that the public had over-reacted that I decided to take the low prices there and then. The sad thing about it is that there are some stupid mugs out there that were happy to back it at those prices. Based on what? No form. No reputation. No evidence. It is genuinely sad.
As the day progressed its price gradually increased. Doubtless it would have increased quicker, but some people will always back O'Neill/McCoy even without any evidence. At the course, the price collapsed all together. Having been favourite earlier, it drifted out to 13/2. The horse was never going particularly well, and when he was tailed off, McCoy pulled him up. Thousands of pounds will have been effectively thrown down the drain by punters, backing a horse that was effectively hopeless, even in a race filled with pretty useless horses.
Maiden Hurdles often offer excellent opportunities for lays, if you know what to look for. And the market will often prove a guide as to whether your hunch is correct.

Ian, very disappointed in you, rather than trawl these pages of insidious losers, could you just PM me your lays.
McCoy is the most underpriced jockey in the world.

A bit harsh on some of the guys there, Oz. It seems like a few of them did pretty well last night :p

Very harsh! Well on me anyway
Sports betting is where I bet big (by my own standards), horse racing is just a bit of fun
Though when I say harsh this bit could have been written just for me..

Please note, as I hope I made clear right at the beginning of what I wrote, I was not advising people never to back McCoy. He is undoubtedly the best jockey. What I was trying to highlight is that there are occasions where punters back his horses down to unrealistic odds. But you can't blame McCoy for that.

I'm giving up betting for a while. I've been on a rotten streak and today took the biscuit.
I had Bavarica in the amateur race at 14/1 and the jockey rode a stinker - took it easy throughout the final furlong whilst the guy just behind him beat seven shades of shit out of his horse and got up in literally the last 2 or 3 strides.
Then I had the top weight in the 5f dash at Goodwood at 8/1. There were no pictures in the shop but the commentators said that they thought it had just held on. Then they saw the print and said at worst it was a dead-heat.
Needless to say, the result was called and it was declared 2nd. The commentators insisted that there wasn't a tissue paper between the horses and said that for all the world it was a dead heat.
Typical of my luck recently. So I'm sitting it out for a month, at least.

Wimbledon was a sombre place on Saturday night as everyone present tried to take in the news that leading trainer Ray Peacock had been killed after a car accident earlier that morning, writes Jim Cremin.
An announcement was made prior to the first race, explaining the reason for the withdrawal of the kennel's runners. Waitresses, security staff and punters stood stunned. Everyone's thoughts were with his family.
It made the racing appear far less important, even what now appears to be the likely retirement of dual Derby champion Westmead Hawk.
He had run a gallant second to local Talkspot, owned by Talksport Radio, who had shot well clear, recording a blistering 4.84sec sectional as the Hawk, who had started well, perhaps too well, ran into first bend bumping and was at least eight lengths adrift down the back.
He made relentless progress, and although the old fire was not there, he ran on well to be beaten a length and a half by the 28.91sec winner. That said, had it been a heat of the Derby, he would be safely through, and he did go clear past the line. He was as gallant as ever, and never let himself, nor his fans down.
But Nick Savva, his trainer, adopting a realistic air, said: “He's not the dog we know. As far as I'm concerned I've made my decision and now just have to speak with Bob .
"He's way behind his best. It's understandable - age and injury takes its toll. Ninety nine out of 100 lose that vital bit extra after such an injury.
"Hawk wants to do it, but he can't do it. If Bob agrees, the dog will be retired."
After the heroic double last weekend of the Hawk and Westmead Joe, it was a disappointing night all-round for the Savva camp.
Westmead Joe, backed from 2-7 to 2-9, was badly bumped and stumbled when finishing third in the 9pm where Droopys Fabregas (28.78sec) took over from early leader Calzaghe Boyo at the third bend.
And Droopys Electric (crowded on every bend) completed an unwelcome treble of odds-on reverses in running second to 33-1 stunner Airtech Spur (29.03sec) in the 9.30pm.
Fastest of the night was Blonde Dino (late Rough Ronaldinho) for John Mullins andMark Currell in the 9.15pm. His sectional of 4.85sec was one spot adrift of Talkspot, but his overall time of 28.67sec markedly better. Blue Square, the Derby sponsors, significantly cut him from 20-1 from 50-1 for the Classic.
The dog has serious pace and was an impressive winner, coming home over five lengths clear of Jo Shuffle.
Greenwell Flash and Greenwell Storm pulled of an off the back double for Glasgow-based Pat Flaherty, clocking 28.87sec and 28.74sec respectively, They both showed power and determination and are now 50-1 (from 100s) and 33-1 (from 50s) with Blue Square.
The sponsors clipped Larkhill Jim from 100s to 66-1 after he too ran through to take the 8.45pm, despite a first bend baulk and trailing the disputing pair Delwood Burrow and Fivestar Blue. The time of 29.24sec was slow but the dog loves Wimbledon.
Gotabetem (28.92sec) and Westmead Alec (29.06sec) were other winners.
But any excitement about the Derby was firmly put on hold by everyone present. The entire evening was totally overshadowed by the loss of Ray Peacock.
**In trials before racing, three Irish raiders had 480m solos: Anycrackjack 29.11sec, Phoenix Paddy 28.80sec and Indesacjack 29.36sec
Over 460m, Sam Poots' Barnfield On Air clocked 27.65sec, Hayley Keightley's Roxholme Ryan 27.84sec and Harry Williams' Pond Astronaut 27.80sec

I've been out, so am answering this a bit late. Had just the one today - Lonesome Man in the 4:15 at Fontwell, which was on offer at ridiculously low prices as favourite late last night and early this morning. It rightly took a walk in the market, and finished as only 4th favourite. I had also layed He's The Gaffer in the 5:15, but he was taken out of the race before the off when all the rain changed the official going.
Sadly, on a Bank Holiday, none at all tomorrow.

Just read this. Alas my ahem 'contact' is no longer there so had no info on it today. To many negatives for a real bet today - the ground, coming back from injury and the drift (the opposite to her first run, i got her at 6's and went off at 7/2 - was about 7/2 and drifted out to 6 at one point). Got a few quid on ew at 6's for old times sake - got a nice tidy sum out of her last year so owes me nothing. Ended up winning easy. Will be another race in her.

66/1. Wow that's brilliant :p I've never had a winner of that price.
I just know the names of these pretend tracks, but haven't taken any interest in how they work. You say you "don't do" Sprint Valley. Is that because Sprint Valley in some way operates differently than, say, Portman Park (which I must confess, I hadn't come across)?

Those computer races are just numbers games, of course. Sprint Valley is over too quickly for me. :)
The thing about virtual racing Ian is that no one cheats and quite often enormous tricasts come up in races with only 10 or 12 runners. You also notice patterns - if a few favourites and second favourites get beaten then it's quite likely that a forecast on them might pay dividends.
Similarly, if the first few races don't feature long shot then the chances increase of a 25/1 or 33/1 winner.
I used to think they were just a fiddle but I've seen a guy pick up £1300 from a 50p tricast and I've had two or three myself (only paying about £50 each time, but still).
I get more winners from my 50p virtual bets than I do from the real thing these days!

It's just a bit of fun Finbar. Of course you can't expect to win very often but there are a number of things in its favour.
1. The prices and therefore the forecast and tricast returns are very good indeed.
2. All of the "jockeys" are trying.
3. None of the horses at Steepledowns ever falls.

That's fascinating, Gooders. I've never taken an interest in it, but it shows how little I know. I just assumed that all the results were random with all the horses having equal chance (a bit like a roulette wheel) except that naturally that the system is "programmed" to ensure that the lower priced horses have a pro-rata better chance of winning than the higher priced horses. But whereas with a roulette wheel the results of previous spins have no effect on future spins***, you are in fact saying that in virtual racing the previous results are a potential guide to future results - ie you said that if no outsiders have come up yet, the chances increase that they will do. That's very interesting, and it makes it a bit more skillful.
I had to smile when you said one reason you like them is that "no-one cheats". The fact that some do cheat in jumping racing is one of the attractions to me in looking for succesful lays. The occasional dishonesty adds to the unpredictability, which is a layers dream! So a favourite unaccountably running badly, or a bad horse suddenly putting in a much improved performance to win, is what gives me a regular income :)
***This reminds me of a question I used to sometimes include when I ran quizzes. If red comes up 10 times in a row, are the chances of black coming up on the next spin (a) less than evens, (b) more than evens or (c) evens. Silly people would answer (a) on the basis that the law of averages will now favour black. Others, who have spotted that is a silly approach, answer (c), thinking how clever they are not to fall into the trap. But in fact, the answer is of course (b). It's always more than evens on every spin.

There are definite patterns Ian. You won't have noticed, but they do actually put up a "form guide" for the virtual racing at Steepledowns and Portman Park.
If the favourite and second favourite haven't had a win in their last 8 races, one of them will invariably get placed (and favourites are often as big as 6/1 or 7/1). If they've won a few races between them recently then that's the time to perm up some of the longer odds horses.
I never back a long shot if it has had a win recently as they hardly ever win twice within a few races.
You also get little spates every so often of the horses named after football teams winning (Wall Sawl, Ips Witch On, Blades, etc), or the ones named after wines, or famous historical figures.
The big tricast returns invariably come up in the smaller fields whereas people naturally assume that the bigger fields are better for long priced winners.
I play them for pennies during the lunch hour just for a bit of fun and recently they've been far better for me than the real thing!

Not done em for a while but if i was in a bookies I used to have the on go on portman park etc, just a couple of quid here and there but 'there is nothing virtual about a winner'.
There normally is a trend as gooders says witht he favs etc. I also noticed that a horse called don bradman always seemed to win! Actually won on it myself a couple times at 12s and 16s from memory. Biggest win was 1.5 ew on a 50/1 shot as i liked the name :)
Gooders is right though in that at least they are always trying. Have noticed a few more 'iffy' rides than usual recently, when given the recent publicity you'd have thought they'd make more of an effert to hide their non efferts!

I once read the t&c's of the virtual racing in a bookies and it boils down to basically picking names out of a hat but with the favourite having it's name in there proportionally more times than others so unless that has changed I can't see how a pattern can emerge. Any sequence of random numbers will show all manner of patterns if you take a very limited selection which is surely the case here.
p.s. I appreciate that reading the t&c's of virtual racing makes me a very sad and lonely individual. :(
Ian Hart
31-05-2007, 08:13 AM
Perhaps they were only virtual t&cs? :)
i have always found there is quite often a fav winner in the first 5-6 rcaes as they make it win as there is the doughnuts in the betting shop early who bet on anything they win then they bet it away.

Not at all - we're all always looking for an edge aren't we?
Clearly there cannot be any rigid patterns or we would all be cleaning up wouldn't we? As I said earlier, it is just a numbers game but since that's also true of almost all horse races these days I'm quite happy to put my pennies where the returns are better - and they are much better.
Someone (i.e. a punter) has to win on these virtual races whereas in the real world, too often it's some cheating trainer, jockey or layer that benefits.

The Greyhoud Derby starts Saturday week..With Westmead Hawk Retiring was such a shame :(
I'm kicking my self now..I was gonna put a few quid each way on it but decided to wait till it has a spin round Wimbledon. The greyhound that was mentioned on the t.v a few weeks ago was Westmead Lord currently 100/1,I was looking at the prices earlier and its as short as 16/1 now what a massive gamble.I know its gotta run six heats before it reaches the final..

Mister Hardy, Lesingtaylor and Beaver Patrol would be my best 3, in that order
Poor epsom for me so far though with blythe knight winning and eagle mountain coming second means a slight profit there so far. Having my best saturday in memory on the other racing though :)
Hope everyone else is having a good day.

Just stays :D
Wasn't a great surprise that it stayed tbh, my main concern was the handling of the track and the jockey. Handled the track no trouble at all. And I could have won on that, even with my lb or two overweight ;) :o

Had a little ew at 9/2 on beaver. Went of far to short for a fairly competitive 16 runner sprint handicap. All the punters getting on the fav, trying to get loses back in the 'lucky last'! Not a huge fan of Hughes but ran a nice race there.

still doesnt make this sentence make any sense though
'Think would have won the first race if horse that hadn't come second hadn't had a raging hard on'
:)
possible football tip here although this is greyhound and horses. juventes 7/2 to beat bari today. only that price because of internationals. surely they still have a better squad. also the fact they havent lost to them for 14 years

Sporting odd's giving: Bari - 21/20 , Juventus - 3/1 , Draw - 8/5. Think will go for a draw as part of accumulator.

:) Not really :moo:
Backed it, and it didn't show till late running on after the winner had flown, obviously had half his mind on the job (so to speak)

I know what you mean, I figured it was what you meant in the first post but the sentence wasnt really coherent, thats what happens with a few sherbets :)
I remember about 2 yrs back at Lingfield, a maiden race, was looking at the horses in the pre-parade ring and the Godolphin newcomer had a raging hard on and his dick was all over the shop, went to the betting ring and he was odds on, so I steamed in on the 2nd fav who had a previous to his name and he duely hacked up :)
Its nice to be trackside and see these things (well not see it, but be aware :D )

On that sort of reasoning, I'm not sure how Linford Christie won all those races!

If Linford had been gelded he would have run sub 9 seconds

To all you horse lovers.....
Do any of you know if there are any evening racing meetings scheduled for Epsom this year ?
I've had a quick look at the official site and it only includes fixtures up to the Derby. I would have thought that there would be a few evening meetings later in the summer but maybe I am wrong !
dont think there is any as there rebuilding/building a new stand

and wins :) Horse was a def lay though, went off at 4/7 cause of it being his first ride back, typical Kieran Fallon though, lots of power and got the horse balanced, 6 lengths of the leader entering the final furlong, gets it up to win by a neck.

if it got beat fair and sqaure, fair enough, you could say it was a great lay (if you as I suspect, did lay it) but for it to lose that way was, well I dunno, but hardly as it was underpriced and the like.
