I had a good evening at the bookies. First I did La Vecchia Scuola each-way at 16/1 which just got pipped.
Then I heard that that Godolphin horse at Newmarket had been gambled on and had some on at 3/1 and some more when it drifted to 7/2. Easiest winner all day - 5 lengths, hard held.
Then had Chant de Guerre at Lingfield at 6/1 - another one that won by quite a few lengths.
Luvvly jubbly.

3.10 Lucarno
3.45 Captain Brilliance
4.20 Eddie Jock

Another watching day, though some interesting races.
Spice route is fancied for the first, but his only wins are in handicap company and Halicarnassus' last win was in this grade.
I like Winker Watson, I think he ran very well at Ascot and is unbeaten, the swtich to 6f and uncertainty about the ground is just putting me off.
Lucarno certainly has the credentials to win this, 4th to Autorised in the diary, followed by a 2nd to Boscobel at Ascot, only fly in the ointment is Sixties Icon who should win this if bouncing back from a very disappointing attempt last time so this is best watched. Ivy Creek is progressive, but is held by Lucarno if you use Boscobel as a yardstick.

Tough card.
The only one I'd be reasonably confident about tipping is Talcen Gwyn in the 7.50. Will probably only be worth a straight win bet.

All Newmarket
1.30 EA
2.00 FEARED IN FLIGHT
2.35 VORTEX
3.10 SAKHEES SECRET
3.45 BARAARI
4.20 RUNSWICK BAY
4.55 HIGH TREASON
Of these, Feared in Flight could be best, very unlucky to finish 3rd when hampered, although I would fear Hatta Fort quite strongly.
Sakhee's Secret has to be the best sprinter in the country, slamming Prime Defender easily by 4 lengths (Prime Defender had previously easily beaten Hoh Mike who has gone to win a group 3), and is unbeaten and is the best of these by a long way. Whether it's worth taking 4/1 about the big field is a matter of opinion but expect him to go very close.

I've had a saver on Sakhee's Secret although I think it'll get found out by these tougher older horses.
Also a small e/w interest in Sander Camillo - won two group races over 6f as a 2yo - if it's back to its best, might have a squeak at a place.

....and it Def wasnt as easy as that :( Steve Drowne Gave him 3 slaps with the whip 50 yards before the line and 50 yards past the line Dutch Art was in front of him, he won well though with a good turn of foot 2 furlongs out

I know, but when it's the difference between £40 and £260 I'd rather my horse finished plum last than beaten a very short head by some donkey outsider - especially when it's named after a Chelsea footballer.
You'd best hope that 4th horse doesn't win or you'll be really pissed off.

Two for Ascot
2.15 Baffled
His 3rd at Ascot reading excellent after You'reSoThrilling's subsequent victory, is 8lb clear on ratings here and this is an excellent opportunity. Pretty short but should win by a street.
2.50 Cesare
His fifth at Ascot is good form and previously hacked up in listed company over a mile, lightly raced and will appreciate this quicker ground. Is fairly priced at 9/4.

Robscarvic, a winner on his debut over 5 furlongs in the mud should appreciate the step up in distance here, the ground good to soft will suit him, he won well, ears pricked and the third has won since. Trading very low at 1.75 with betfair at the moment, would be of interest if you can get any odds against.

Get in! Samarinda was the first leg of my lucky 15 today - just won the 3.20 at 8/1. :)
All the tipsters went for Montpellier which meant that the price for my one just got bigger and bigger. Bonus!
Edit - why oh why did I put the stupid odds-on shot up on the Masters thread instead of this one. :grrr:

OK then, in a break with tradition and because all of the real racing will likely be abandoned today (is it winter already?) I'll tell you the 5 long-shots I've picked out for a small each-way interest today:
Waldorf Salad 1.35
Riesco Raver 1.46
Kew Rendezvous 2.10
Dorset Downs 3.09
Bow Wow Wow 3.30
That'll put the kybosh on them!

TURBO LINN
This admirable sort should win easily here, won the Yorkshire Oaks by 4 lengths (value for more) with two of his rivals Under The Rainbow and Portal behind, any slowing of the ground will also suit and appears to be a good thing on a day of mediocrity. SP forecast at 11/8, betfair only trading at 1.83 at the moment.
Ian Hart
21-07-2007, 12:25 AM
I doubt the SP forecast will be accurate, Saul. The Betfair price seems much nearer the likely starting price IMHO. Indeed, if she did start at 11/8, you should be a bit concerned because it would indicate some worries about her.
I agree with you that it's difficult to see who might beat her. My only slight concern is that they have always previously left a longer gap between races, so you'll need to hope she's recovered alright from a race 10 days ago. She should have done, but that doubt would make me wonder if the price is likely to represent any sort of value.
Good luck with it though mate :p

2.15 AYR
GOTHENBURG
Mark Johnston has won 4 out of the last 6 runnings of this race and should do again. Second over 7 furlongs, being ground down close home (6l clear of the third), form has worked out well, already a winner from the race. Racing over 6 today and should improve for the experience. Main rival Nawaaf has been disappointing when favourite for all three starts. Trading at 1.9 at betfair at the moment, expect it to go off around even money.

Coral. Some shops still only give you double the odds apparently but both the shops I use give triple. Ladbrokes certainly only give double. I started with an 8/1 winner in my last Lucky15 but didn't get anything with it.
I would imagine that any "multi" is quite profitable for the bookies but I used to get one winner so often when doing Yankees that I decided to pay the extra for Lucky15's and I've certainly benefitted. Like today, a yankee with one 5/1 winner = no return, whereas a Lucky 15 with the same one winner turns a profit.

Nail on the Head.
As Gooders says later, bookies generally make a fortune out of multis. The more bets it involves, the better they like it. And it's pretty obvious why. Taking just the 11 bets of a Yankee as an example, as soon as just one loses that's 7 of the bets immediately gone down the tube.
Well done to Gooders in getting a profit from his Lucky 15. But believe me, for every Gooders there's more than enough who don't to encourage bookies to try and attract punters away from their rivals with offers such as the one he has mentioned.

All true, but there's another side to it in that as soon as one horse wins then the bookie suddenly has a large number of bets still in play at increased liabilities.
The manager in Corals always tells me when the computer has flashed up a message to him - if my first 3 have won (which happens more often than you'd think) his system warns him that he now stands to lose £2000 or whatever if the last one wins as well.
I just love the idea of huge returns for small stakes and I will always bet this way. As I've said before well done to all of you who play the percentages for a profit but I'm not in it for that. :p

Can Scorpion beat Dylan Thomas in the King George?
saul1664
27-07-2007, 08:10 PM
I'd look beyond the front two. Dylan Thomas won't like the ground, and Scorpion isn't exactly straightforward, and didn't really go through with too much effort when being beaten comfortably by Marahaal last time, Marahaal's record in group races isn't that strong however, so Prince Fliori who is a standout 12/1 on early prices stands out, plenty of globetrotting successes, plus ground should be far more suitable then when 3rd last time out.
Eagle Mountain runs at York but has become expensive to follow, and unseated rider in France latest. May end up the bridesmaid again, worth opposing or laying to lose.

I've got a free £5 bet with Betfair which I have put on Eagle Mountain, going looks to be fine for it.

you are going to hate this, but front 4 pulled about 5 lengths clear and were covered by less than half a length
Cassiara ended up being forced wide and lost 3rd by a nose, the guys on TV are saying how well she ran and she was unlucky.

Fin - or anyone really - we're thinking of going into something called the Lennox Enclosure (everything else is sold out). I assume that this is a general public area judging by the write up and the price - does anyone have any idea what it's like?
I went there years and years ago and I seem to recall it being a long way away from the winning post and not being able to see much!
Any tips for Wednesday gratefully received. If you wouldn't mind putting yours up foxy, and then I can at least eliminate a few horses and make the fields more manageable for selection purposes. ;) :p

my friend (who organises our tickets every year so I never know what enclosure we're in!) said "Not bad but not like the Richmond or the Gordon enclosure", not exactly very helpful I'm afraid.
Not sure where we're going this year but I do know we're not having to dress up smart like in previous years so clearly we're in with the rif raf, exactly where I belong
Superb forecast for the week as well!!
Would love to go to Galway one year, anyone been?

I checked with the course. The Lennox Enclosure is the riff-raff area and the closest you can get to the winning post is 1 furlong out! Still, the weather is going to be nice and it's a day out, so we're going anyway. :)
Sussex Stakes on Wednesday. :lux:

Ooh, Rio De La Plata is running on Wednesday. That'll be my banker bet.
I'd put it in the Goldmine if I could be arsed to write up a proper reasoning as to why it will win but it's simply based on the fact that I witnessed its last run and as Oz would say, it is a machine.

On the other hand, your Goldmine record is second only to Oz......;)

All Goodwood...
2.15 Championship Point
2.50 Aqaleem
3.25 Tariq
4.00 Starlit Sands
4.35 Castle Howard
5.05 Moynahan
5.40 Prince of Thebes
Well the weather may be glorious, the racing less so.
Best bet (and only one I am having of the day) is
2.50 AQALEEM
An impressive winner of a group 3 by 4 lengths, and finished 3rd in the Derby from a tricky draw, will be suited by the St Leger trip but should start by winning here. Yellowstone is 5lb clear on ratings, but his eclipse 4th does tend to flatter him a bit, he has been placed in group events but has never really looked like winning one, and has a lot of mileage already this season, therefore Aqaleem is a confident choice.
Tariq is chosen over Asset purely because he is improving and a couple of these have had indifferent runs over shorter distances.
Starlit Sands has done nothing wrong, but this is a tricky race again, and Captain Gerrard is another improver to be careful of.
