If you like a punt on the Greyhounds, my mate has a great little dog running tonight at Hove. This is the email he sent me: -

"If you’re around tomorrow evening, tune into Sky Sports 1 for the action from Hove – Jazz Hurricane in the Sussex Cup Final. 9.45 race. Coverage starts at 7.30. There is a warm favourite in trap 4 outside her but she is still overpriced with Blue Sq. at 12-1. She was second fastest in the semis and should continue to improve over the coming weeks."

I got £20 on her at 10s

Well the weather may be glorious, the racing less so.

Best bet (and only one I am having of the day) is

2.50 AQALEEM

An impressive winner of a group 3 by 4 lengths, and finished 3rd in the Derby from a tricky draw, will be suited by the St Leger trip but should start by winning here. Yellowstone is 5lb clear on ratings, but his eclipse 4th does tend to flatter him a bit, he has been placed in group events but has never really looked like winning one, and has a lot of mileage already this season, therefore Aqaleem is a confident choice.

Tariq is chosen over Asset purely because he is improving and a couple of these have had indifferent runs over shorter distances.

Starlit Sands has done nothing wrong, but this is a tricky race again, and Captain Gerrard is another improver to be careful of.

Hmmm, 2 winners from the first 3 selections and I back the only loser :moo:

Having said that Richard Hills gave the horse a terrible ride, boxed him in, Yellowstone had about a 4 length head start and he went down half a length to a neck, unfortunately, the time he got out because of Goodwood's short straight he didn't get the time to ride the horse out properly. He's desperately unlucky, I rate him at least a 2 length winner of this race if he had been ridden anywhere near properly. I would think he would be extremely hard to beat in the St Leger.

If its anything less than 5/4 I wont back it..... looking at the prices and the form I think Il Warrd offers more value, depends how much you are willing to risk on a possible odds on shot though!

Those of you who like to back horses over the jumps to win, might like to keep your eye on a horse called Pouilly. I had quite a substantial lay on him in the 6:30 at Perth tonight, so I watched him closely. When they jumped the fourth from home I was getting quite concerned. He had made nice progress through the field into approx 5th place and looked to be going worryingly easily. But then he got blocked in on the rails by other horses, and twice in a few seconds the jockey had to pull him back hard to stop him running into the horse just ahead. He never recovered from this, and finished out of the first three. :lux:

However, I don't think that was a reflection of how he ran, and I suspect they will be able to find a maiden he can win. I reckon he might do better over 2 miles rather than today's 2.5 miles. One to keep your eye on.

Let's try Goodwood again...

2.15 Full House
2.50 Rio De La Plata
3.30 Ramoniti
4.05 Mariotto
4.40 Rhuepunzel
5.10 Contessina
5.45 Race to the Music

Another tricky day.

Rio De La Plata looks a standout for the 2.50, despite his maiden win not amounting to too much - though this is best ignored, the maiden he won is often used as a stepping stone by trainers to better things. Having said that there are currently others with better form and those who can improve as well. I think Donegal could give him most to do.

Excellent Art is well fancied for the 3.30 but his neck victory doesn't read anywhere near as well as Ramoniti's narrow victory, where he had Jeremy, George Washington and Cesare (winner since) back in the field, though it was a blanket finish. Expect another very close finish as these are nearly all rated to finish in a line.

But the best bet of the day lies away from the glory of goodwood.

6.00 LEICESTER

OASIS WIND

Paul Cole introduced this colt at Windsor where he ran a very creditable third, and unless the newcomers are anything special, looks a certain winner in waiting here. He's also booked an apprentice to take 5lb off his back. Not much value at 5/4 early prices but near enough nailed on.

have a free phone upgrade for Nokia N95 or E65, anyone got any comments, was going to go for the 65 till I heard the 95 would be free. Had a great day at Goodwood today - really good fun.

Backed Rio De La Plata (naturally, after the way I was banging on about it) and switched from Excellent Art to Ramonti in search of value.

Also switched to Steve's tip on Fashion Rocks instead of Lille Ida - another good move.

Me and the family had the 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the last but we'd backed them all to win, unfortunately.

Would thoroughly recommend Glorious Goodwood to anyone after today.

There was a time when I would have switched to something representing "better value" but I couldn't see it getting beat so I actually broke my own rules and upped the stakes a bit. When they went past us one and a half furlongs out I told the family it was a question of how far it would win by. :)

Good tip on Fashion Rocks Steve (though I thought for a minute it was going to get done on the line). :p

I think there is sometimes misunderstandings when people discuss "value", particularly where it relates to odds on favourites, as it's frequently commented that there is never value where the odds are so small. But that is simply an incorrect generalisation.

Good value is a bet where the odds on offer are significantly higher than the true odds (assuming you can accurately assess the true odds). In this particular case you assessed Rio de la Platas to be virtually unbeatable. Let's say you believed his real chances were around 6 to 1 on (i.e. he would win the race six times out of seven) which from the way you went on about him, you certainly did! In that case, the bookmakers odds represented (to you) very good value by comparison. :p

Mind you, assessing real odds is a tricky business. My only bet today was a lay on Lutea in the 5:20 at Perth. As usual, to assess whether the odds on offer represented value, I went through the runners to take a view on who might conceivably beat him. In doing so, I took the view that Gold Gun had no chance, simply because in the last race at Perth the night before he had got up in the very last stride to dead heat. It seemed highly unlikely he could be counted on to win, when he had won such a hard fought race less than 24 hours earlier and was surely still recovering. But Gold Gun skated home. What do I know! :o

2.50 Wi Dud
3.25 Geordieland
4.00 Hearthstead Maison
4.35 Smookh
5.10 Amhooj
5.40 George the Second

A pretty ordinary days racing to be honest. If you must have a bet. Wannabe Posh should turn the tables on Trick or Treat as his form is progressive and Trick or Treat hasn't really come on from his debut win.

Wi Dud was a good second to Hoh Mike recently but this is a tough race to call and to take a low price about.

Geordieland is probably a worthy favourite and may be best of the day, though he is certainly quirky and has to race with exaggerated waiting tactics. Any chink in his armour will probably be exposed by Balkan Knight.

Over at Nottingham in the 4.20, Time Over looks nailed on though only trading at 1.46, and Mu'Abb looks like it could be fairly useful in the 7.00 at Sandown, currently trading at about 13/8, though there are a few useful newcomers here.

Thing is, I'm generally by the winning post when I go racing and I wasn't looking forward to being a furlong away - but in fact what you get to see close up is the point in the race where the jockeys are getting really busy and horses are getting chopped off in their runs etc. and it's actually pretty exciting, even if you end up relying on the commentary to find out who has won.

Spectacular setting too, Goodwood.

Fecks sake. Mutab led all the way, was 1 and a half lengths clear inside the final furlong, traded at 1.02 in running and got beaten right on the line by a newcomer.

Wake up Maggie won really really well at Lingfield earlier this summer, but then was awful over in Ireland so I swerved the horse cause of that run, but it ran well today and again won well, quickened nicely.

That was a horrible pile up in the last race, hope all jockeys and horses are ok.

Let's see what we can do tomorrow...

Firstly Goodwood ...

2.10 Purple Emperor
2.45 Tobosa
3.20 Light Shift
3.55 Fayr Jag
4.30 Bouguereau
5.05 Dark Tara
5.40 Lucayan Dancer

Certainly again massively quantity over quality, however you couldn't expect a much better race than the 3.20 and with comes the best bet of the day.

3.20 Light Shift

Many will fancy peeping fawn after his 3 and a half lengths demolition of Light Shift in Ireland, however the ground was heavy which contributed to that defeat, and Light Shift finished in front of Peeping Fawn in the Oaks on faster ground, quickening very well and I expect her to come out in front again. Admirable though Peeping Fawn is, her mileage is a bit of a concern as well. There are others which chances as well but at estimated 11/4 Light Shift looks like pretty good value.

Onenightinlisbon out today, 4.45 Lingfield best price 12/1 but a massive 19/1 in from 22/1 on Betfair been placed three times out of five at Linfield though admittedly small fields. It has previously won at 20/1 and 11/1. Longest traveller of the day 542 miles with N Callan on board.

I've had £5.50 win at 19/1 and £5.00 at 9/2 for a place.

Chaps,

I may have a good touch for you here.

A mate of mine owns a horse called Danawi which is running at 2pm Brighton today.

Basically in its last 2 races it came 8th. (this is because it bled in one and put its back out in the later)

3 races ago when it was fit it came second by a short head. The winner of that race is the favorite in this one. However due to the problems with Danawi, it is now a stone lighter than the favourite today....(I hope your still with me......)

Todays race is the worst Danawi has run in and assuming it is fit, then it is nailed on for a place. At the moment it is 12 - 1.

My mate is calling me at 1.30 after he has spoken to the trainer to make sure it is fully fit again. If it is then he is lumping on......

I'll keep you updated.

Jesus, what a disaster....

It was as fit as a fiddle. The problem was the apprentice jockey. He was told to get him up to the front (which he did), then make sure he was on the rail on the turn home....the problem was the jockey took him to the wrong rail!!!!

My mate, who is a genuinely laid back fella had lumped on it to win and was gonna pin the jockey up since it was a glaring mistake.

I will keep you all informed for the next time it runs because its odds will get bigger now....

2.35 Yellowstone
3.10 Dylan Thomas

5.00 Hoh Hoh Hoh

Yellowstone's slightly fortunate defeat of Aqaleem sets the standard in the 2.35, and he's probably a worthy favourite, however Aiden O'Brien runs four which puts the cat amongst the pigeons.

Best bet of the day is in the 3.10. Dylan Thomas latest run was extremely impressive and he seems a much safer bet than Authorised who was easily brushed aside by Notnowcato and whose Derby form hasn't exactly been advertised that well. Notnowcato is clear second best.

Swiss Franc's form in the 2.00 is top class, placed in the Coventry and July stakes, but through a line through Winker Watson doesn't actually have that much in hand of Art Advisor who is a much bigger price, there's a couple of improving sorts in here too and it's best left alone.

Peeping Fawn seems to be getting better and better and 4/7 reflects her chance, bigshock if she loses.

Captain Gerrard is worth a crack at a listed event and should go close after his 3rd in a Group 3 last time, while Moynahan ran a nice race at Goodwood and Paul Cole's horses do improve for their first run.

I can't remember who it was, but someone mentioned on here a couple of weeks ago that not only was a race on heavy going very unpredictable, but also form on heavy going is very unreliable when a horse subsequently runs on different going. I remember agreeing at the time, and it's certainly a factor that always worth looking out for.

There was an excellent example today in the first race at Newton Abbot. Despite this being a 14 runner keenly contested handicap, Insignia was as low as 9/4 for a period this morning. This price did rise a bit when people started laying it, but it still went off favourite, despite the facts that it had been hiked 15 lbs in the weights and also that the young jockey had never ridden a winner. The reason that so many people were keen to back it at such a low price was because in its previous two runs it had finished 1st and 2nd. But both of those performances had been on heavy going, and therefore unreliable as a form guide when running in different conditions. Good performances on heavy going do not automatically mean a horse will appreciate softish going, and its often worth laying or backing against a horse that has been supported for the wrong reasons in such circumstances.

3.10 Goodwood

Cesare

This admirable horse's only defeat when 5th in a group 1, otherwise he has won all starts over a mile and is clearly improving, this race is bread and butter for him, he won a group 3 last time out despite meeting trouble in running, quickening impressively, expect him to be held up and come with a late rattle, this race is well within his compass. Not a great price at 11/8 but pretty nailed on.

I think he's far shorter than he should be and I give Blythe Knight a sporting chance of beating him at a good price.

Haydock 3:40 - Dansili Dancer at 16/1. E/W (obviously)
Back down to a sensible h'cap. Right distance & ground for him imo.

3.10 DONCASTER (tomorrow)

TURBO LINN

Won it's last 7 starts, and would be a hell of a lot shorter than 3/1 if trained by a fashionable stable. Most of her wins at 1 mile 4 furlongs, but has won over 1 mile and 6 furlongs on her only try at the distance. Has shown a sparkling turn of foot in all her wins, winning some races by 8 to 10 lengths, and comes across horses that have been placed in group races that aren't as progressive as her. Fancy her to go really well. Betfair were trading at 3.1 and best price with bookies is 100/30.

2.40 Doncaster

SEPTIMUS

Won over 2M by 1 length from Balkan Knight, previously showing smart form over 1M 6F, travels very well for a stayer and quickens up well, idled in front last time so value for more than the 1 length he beat Balkan Knight last time who reopposes on 3lb better terms. The 2 furlongs extra here should pose no problem. Allegretto should be next best, Geordieland has gone right off the boil.

3.10 Doncaster

CAPTAIN GERRARD

This race focuses around whether Fleeting Spirit can reproduce his 2 and a half length beating of Captain Gerrard when they last met, it's going to be closer this time as Captain Gerrard has improved in the meantime and looks most progressive, whilst Fleeting Spirit was not disgraced when stepped up in class last time. At 4/1, Captain Gerrard is worth chancing.

Well despite the lack of response what a day! Very impressed with the new stand, had 3 winners out of 6 (left before the last race), the icing on the cake coming when my mate asked me whether it was worth backing Candidato Roy on Betfair, I replied there was no harm in doing so at 89/1 for a tenner each, liking ascot a lot!! Ok it's bragging but it's not every day I get an 89/1 winner :lux: :lux:

Well, in hindsight, I think the fact that it was entered up here today having run second in a class 4 at Warwick last time out and that the trainer had gone to the trouble of booking one of the best jockeys around should have alerted us all to the fact that it was certainly no forlorn hope.

Then we could have delved a bit deeper and discovered that it used to be trained by Mike De Kock and had won two Group races in South Africa, as well as in Nad Al Sheba earlier in the year.

2.00 NEWMARKET

SHABIBA

Ran second to a good sort in Sams Cross at Goodwood in a similar quality race, quickening up well to lead only for greenness and a lack of a race to tell close home. Well bred and trained by Marcus Tregoning and will be expected to improve from his last race. As always in maidens, you need to be aware of dangers from unraced and improving horses, but hard to see Spinning Lucy who was beaten at 4/9 and then finishing down the field in a better quality race troubling him. He's joint top rated here and with improvement should be the best of these before going on to better things. You can get 15/8 with betfair at the moment which seems reasonable.

ECHELON

When this beat Cesare two runs ago it came as a bit of a surprise, but followed that up with a better performance to win a group 1 in Ireland beating Red Evie, Cesare has run well since and hard to see this getting beaten tomorrow. Slight blip in mid season with two mid placed runs but looks on the top of her form here. 9/4 at betfair is value.

Two for the weekend. Oo-er...

1.10 ASCOT CAPTAIN GERRARD

He's been beaten twice when stepped up to this level, but has run into Fleeting Spirit twice who is more than useful, his listed race successes are actually quite impressive and I think he has a group 3 in him, he can perform better than he has shown. Spirit of Sharjah actually finished in front of him last time, but the ground conditions will favour Captain Gerrard and I'm confident he'll reverse the form and take all the beating. Betfair are trading at 5/2 which is reasonable.

1.40 ASCOT QUEENS BEST

This has the look of another promising Stoute/Ryan Moore combination. Very progressive, following up a Listed and Group 3 victory with a short head second at the Curragh when upped again to group 2 and now back down to group 3 here. Although she has to concede weight all round with the group penalties, she should do the business and 11/4 is more than a fair price on betfair at the moment.

A week of mediocrity but 3 today...

1.00 NEWMARKET

POLMAILY

A very good second to Captain Brilliance on his debut, running green and picking up to be 2 lengths second, sure to come on from that and hasn't got much to fear here, has 17lbs in front of his nearest rival, and unless the newcomers are well above average will win here. Currently trading at 8/11 on betfair.

2.35 NEWMARKET

AUTOCUE

Emmrooz will be a warm favourite but floundered in the soft ground when stepped up in class last time and no reason to expect that she is anything special. Autocue looks like another improving horse and I do like the Stoute/Ryan Moore combination, dead heated on debut coming from off the pace showing a lot of speed, can improve here and is terriffic value at 7/2 on betfair.

3.20 REDCAR

SPINNING LUCY

Currently trading at 11/8 on betfair which seems overly generous, but this may be due to the unraced Godolphin horse Ibis (who really can't be that great if he's being entered here) which seems value. The form of the recent third to Shabiba in a much better race at Newmarket stands head and shoulders above what anything else has achieved (17lbs clear on ratings) and must take all of the beating.

Hmmmmm. First one beaten by two newcomers, hadn't backed it then it drifted in running when well placed about 4 out, so took 4/5 (later found out I got 2/1 against so assume the commentary is actually behind the race). Got Emmrooz right, but the Stoute didn't show and picked the wrong one, and Spinning Lucy won by 6 lengths. Godolphin horse sounds like a right nutter, had the monty roberts blanket on, did a back flip before the race, took 7 handlers to get it in, and then planted its heels and finished almost last.

That's correct, Saul. The commentary seems to run about 20 seconds behind the race, sometimes a bit more. Unless you constantly press "refresh" to update the prices, they will just change automatically a bit later on. If you do refresh the prices, they stay well ahead of the commentary you are receiving - quite amusingly so, because you can see by dramatic price movements what's going to happen on the commentary in about 20 seconds time! Quite commonly in a jumps race you'll see a price shoot out to 1000, which is a sure sign that it has fallen. A few seconds later, you'll hear him fall on the commentary.

If you're going to bet in running, I would strongly suggest not doing it from an internet commentary, because you will always put yourself at a disadvantage.

I know now!

Some great racing tomorrow, wait weeks for a group race and 7 come at once. Here goes...

These are all newmarket, apart from the last one at Cheltenham ...

2.05 CESARE

Winner of a Listed event by 4 lengths, and a very good winner of a group 2, his 3 defeats have been in championship races behind the best horses, losing by one and a quarter lengths each time. He's up to winning this, won't be inconvenienced by either the soft ground or drop to 7 furlongs, more of a worry would be getting a run as he needs to be held up. No point in analysing the opposition as it's a fairly big field with horses of equal comparable form. Having said that 5/1 is fairly good value, and he should go extremely well.

2.40 NEW APPROACH

Going the same way as stables prvious Teofilo, boasts the best form here, a sublime dismissal of Rio De La Plata at the Curragh in a group one last time out is by far better than anything else has achieved and looks pretty special. Improving sorts like McCartney may be next best. Short but backable at 6/4.

3.15 NOTNOWCATO

Has had a remarkable season, beating Arc winner Dylan Thomas, and also beating Authorized quite comfortably, before not being at his best when 4th behind him on his last run. However, this field isn't the strongest ever assembled, and Literato probably has a good chance, but will stick with NotNowCato who is fairly priced at 100/30.

5.05 DISTINCTION

Surprisingly crabbing his deat heat last time out, where he was 5 lengths clear of the third. Previously a top class stayer, not so good as we was, but this is a pretty motley lot. Likely favourite Regal and Royal has done his winning in France and debatable to say how good that form is but he does look at least like he is improving. However, will stay with Distinction whose form is more solid and should go well here, and is pretty big at 11/4.

5.15 CHELTENHAM

PATMAN DU CHARMIL

Running for the on fire Nigel Twiston Davis stable, has had two bloodless novice wins with faultless jumping, his main rival Blu Teen came second when odds on last time in a decent race but has tendency to break blood vessels which isn't promising. If he is allowed to build up a big lead, it could be all over by half way. Good enough value at 7/4.

That's all folks...

Backed Monet's yesterday, what a horse Kauto Star is, giving away that much weight and still rallying at the finish, Denman is probably the only horse that can stop him winning all the big prizes once again this season

1.20 STRATFORD

BLAEBERRY

Comfortable winner of two hurdle starts around this distance and lightly raced, should transfer this ability to fences and win today against a not very competitive field, though the 2.14 on offer does reflect this.

Very easy winner, heavily backed and went off at 1.69.

For some reason, my bet was unmatched despite saying matched at the time (think the price may have suddenly changed) and I find out now I haven't backed it at all. :veryangry

You'll be alright. I backed it with betfair. In all my years betting I have never had an unmatched bet, thought it was strange because when I clicked submit and ok, the profit/loss figures didn't come up, so I went to my account and it said it was matched, but it obviously wasn't.
