The 25's have gone :p
Westmead Lord remains 16-1 with the sponsor to retain the Blue Square Greyhound Derby title after stepping up his preparation with a 27.73sec solo trial before racing at Wimbledon Tuesday night.
Nick Savva's star, kept out of competitive action since his victory last July due to a niggling toe injury, was not brilliantly away, posting a 3.93sec sectional, but generally strode out well after perhaps easing slightly at the first bend before tiring a little on the run for home.

The betting will start to hot up now for the Greyhound Derby 2008
I wonder if Nick Savva can keep hold of his crown or will Paul Henessey and PJ Fahy try to add the English Derby to their collection of Derby Finals.
May is going to be an interesting month. :p

The season's last hurrah for the 2m championship hurdlers was missing both Katchit and Osana, the Champion Hurdle first and second, as well as the horse that started favourite at Cheltenham, Sizing Europe. That said, this was still another top-class renewal of a nearly always glittering contest, with last year's Champion Hurdle hero Sublimity, this year's Champion Hurdle third Punjabi and the sport's greatest enigma Harchibald all coming out to play.
Disappointingly, this turned into a somewhat inadequate contest, for while PUNJABI received a perfect ride from Barry Geraghty, the jockeys on both Sublimity and Harchibald were not seen at their best. In a race run at a generous but not crazy gallop, Philip Carberry on Sublimity and Paul Carberry on Harchibald both confusingly decided to allow Punjabi a lead of five lengths, which neither of the brothers seemed in the least bit keen to reduce until after the penultimate flight had been jumped. However, by then, the winner had gone beyond recall. For Punjabi, this was a win well deserved. Racing here for only the fourth time this season, he came to Ireland a fresh horse and an improving one as well, having carried top weight into second in the Totesport Trophy before his excellent Champion Hurdle third. Already proven at this track having bagged a substandard Champion Four Year Old Hurdle last season, Nicky Henderson's charge displayed excellent tactical speed and, once put to sleep by Geraghty, responded to every one of his rider's calls. A final-flight mistake came too late to stop him and, as hard as Sublimity tried in the closing stages, Punjabi was never going to be caught.
Punjabi is, like Cheltenham hero Katchit, only a second-season five-year-old, and, as such, further improvement next season has to be expected. If it comes, he would hold genuine claims come Cheltenham next March, and the best-priced 14-1 offered by Boylesports is perfectly fair, as, indeed, is William Hill’s low quote of 10-1. Even so, an ante-post wager at this stage makes little appeal.
Sublimity’s connections suggested slight discontent at the way the 2007 Cheltenham champion had been ridden, and that frustration is understandable. Unless the normally first-rate Carberry felt his mount was going to struggle to get home, it is hard to fathom why he rode him so far out of his ground. At the finish, Sublimity was beaten by a margin smaller than the one Carberry handed Punjabi and, while Sublimity would very probably not have won even if he had been ridden more prominently, that cannot be said for certain. The horse himself ran a fine race, but his last two efforts have confirmed the view that he was an ordinary winner of the Champion Hurdle and, at this stage, it is hard to imagine him regaining his crown.
Ebaziyan has had a distinctly uninspiring season and has in no way built on his Supreme Novices’ Hurdle victory. However, a few of his runs have highlighted that he does retain ability, and this was one of them, although he, too, was given an awful lot todo. His running style would suit French racing, so he would be a fascinating contender if sent by Willie Mullins for the French Champion Hurdle.
Harchibald’s connections cannot have been overly optimistic going into the race given the overnight watering and morning rain that followed. Ground conditions had been blamed for Harchibald's Champion Hurdle flop and, although he ran better here, he was never a factor. Paul Carberry has invariably ridden the horse from off the pace, so his tactics were less surprising than those used on Sublimity, and, in Harchibald's case, he would not have won under any circumstances. The second-half of his season has been disappointing and he becomes ever harder to get his head in front.
Sublimity
raced in moderate 5th, 4th and ridden after 2 out, moderate 2nd straight, closed but no impression and kept on same pace run-in

Going for my 5th consecutive winner in a row, following wins at 6/4, 11/4, 10/1 and 9/2. Was going to select Ask this morning but the anticipated 7/4 forecast was never there always EVEN money on the exchanges before going off at 8/13 and prevailing, he'll be seen to better effect over further and looks to have a good season ahead of him.
3.55 SANDOWN
MEDICINE PATH
Backed this last time out at 9/2 in a listed race to see off his well-backed stablemate and won cosily, better value for more than the 1 length he won. It's a bit churlish that now he steps up for this Group 2, that he's a quarter of the price he was for the listed event. But having won two consecutive listed events, he's worth the step up here, is improving, difficult to see anything that finished behind him last time finishing in front and the other group placed horses don't inspire much confidence. He's been back already. I'd take the 7/4 before it disappears.

Strange race. The winner has won well. Medicine Path dwelt at the start, but the pace was pedestrian and had a half hearted effort 2 furlongs out soon petered out, every horse he beat last time finished in front this time, rather a flat run, least I got the value last time.

Some interesting racing at Ascot tomorrow.
Skid Solo was well fancied first time up to run into 33/1 shot Baycat and both reoppose in the first tomorrow. Will also be interesting to see how Distinction runs in the two miler, but I mainly like.
3.20 ASCOT
CESARE
Likely favourite and form did tail off at the end of last season but potentially very smart indeed on his day, and his turn of foot should be seen to good effect in this small field. Has already beaten the second favourite Royal Oath, and Don't Panic faces an even tougher task then when second to his fancied stablemate last time out, which form has already taken a knock. 13/8 is plenty short enough, but just attractive enough. Should be fresh enough and expect another good season.

I don't really understand why Skid Solo is a short-priced favourite, and Bay Cat 9/2 or bigger.
Yes, Skid Solo has some big race entries but Bay Cat won pretty well last time and the small weight difference shouldn't make Skid Solo a hot favourite this time, IMHO.
And I wouldn't touch Cesare's race - 3 or 4 potential winners there.

I spoke to Darren yesterday and he tells me Barnfield On Air is in good shape and ready to take them on at Wimbledon. He didn't make any excuses for him not winning in Scotland but he does think it won't be as hard in Wimbledon.
The longer run to the bend in Wimbledon will suit him better and the travelling won't be as exhausting, after all 8 hours in the car to Scotland would take the edge off most of us.
So as Blue Square still have him at 20/1 I would say Barnfield On Air might be worth a few quid and taking the Blue Square £25 free bet offer would increase the odds value to 40/1.

Yes, Royal Oath would have stood no chance whatsoever. Won by a length but value for at least 15. He never rode the horse at any stage, never pushed it out, just sat motionless. Have to take the quality of the race into account, but that was the easiest winner I have ever seen. Don't Panic has been backed into favouritism in two listed races but has been well short, he's a handicapper who isn't making the grade in listed events.

He tracked the leaders, went to the front under pressure about 1 furlong out, and they finished much in a heap, though they didn't look like catching him at any stage. Skid Solo faded right away 2 furlongs out, the second horse has only moderate form on the all weather. Difficult to quantify the form, though its probably above average but nothing more.

Sounds about right. As I said, the trainer isn't sure whether the horse is good enough for Royal Ascot and said he will run it again before deciding.

Thoughts from today...
Milne Graden who won the handicap at 1/2F about half a length is value for at least a 6 length win, showed a fantastic turn of foot making up 5 lengths in under half a furlong, clearly miles better than handicap class and looks extremely useful.
Heaven Sent won well in the 2.45, being up with the pace, and staying on very strongly. Passage of Time ran well for a long way, her 4th place hides her ability and she is likely to win very soon.
New Approach was the best horse in the 2000 Guineas by a mile and the defeat is hard to swallow. Making the running, was challenged by HenrytheNavigator a furlong out and didn't have enough response to battle back, he's actually miles better than this, but just wasn't fit enough and in a couple of strides would have claimed the race, he will be much better over time and is clearly top class.

Tomorrow
1000 Guineas
Natagora holds all the Aces, she's won her comeback race, and clearly was the best filly last year and should take a lot of beating, although there are a few dangers.
In the 3.55 Sakhee's Secret will be all the rage, and he has clear smart form, but the fly in the ointment is a first try at 5f, though he travels well, there are several 5f specialists here including Captain Gerrard, who has blistering early pace, and it may be a case of the fittest not the best. Interesting racing but hold fire on the betting for now.

First chance I ve had a chance to post on here since friday, very dissapoinitng run from Ibn Khladun yesterday, hacent read up on what Frankie or Godolphin have said about him yet, especially as he was backed into 7/2, 4/1 2nd fav on the day, they seemed very confident.
Today I had Natagora and Sakhee's secret in a double, trust the latter to let me down, especially after having backed Natagora antepost in a double with Ibn Khaldun :(

2.45 NEWBURY
CESARE
Won a listed race on his comeback by a length (value for at least 10), cantering all over the field, without being ridden or pushed out. His form last year was smart to say the least, and is well up to taking a Group 1, even without the expected improvement. Trip and going is ideal, and it's not the strongest Group 1 either, so 4/1 is spectacular value. Expect to see a scintillating victory.

WALTHAMSTOW SHOCK: track to close for development in mid-August
Im well shocked thats closing down!
THE news that greyhound racing has dreaded crept out from Walthamstow Friday afternoon: the track is to close in the middle of August, with vacant possession being handed to residential developers on September 1.
Heads of department, and John Coleman, representing trainers, were called to a meeting yesterday and given the grim news by Charles Chandler, chairman of the stadium.
In a statement, he cited losses over the past three years, including last year of £500,000 and described the situation as untenable

No, I always bet the same. By rubbish, I meant the false pace early on, and the fact that it ended up being a false pace, which suited some horses but not others.

If I'd bet today, I would have bet HenrytheNavigator, obviously no value in either of them, can't see why he was being reopposed and why New Approach would have been better when they both were going to improve, plus New Approach had to travel as well. An easier victory this time. New Approach has been found to be a bit flat footed, time to try over further perhaps?

Walsh hit by suspension
Ruby Walsh has been banned for 14 days following a dramatic finish to the Pertemps Handicap Chase at Stratford.
The rider had his head down and was in full flight after the final fence as he gave chase to leader Surface To Air on Alan Hollingsworth's Gallik Dawn.
But Walsh noticed too late he was heading towards the water jump rather than going to the left-hand side of it.
He managed to negotiate the barriers in front of it but had no option than to jump the water.
A stewards' inquiry immediately ensued and Walsh was disqualified after crossing the line in second place.
The incident comes hot on the heels of Sam Thomas taking the wrong course at Fakenham on Sunday, a move which led to him being handed bans totalling 17 days.

AIDAN O'BRIEN plans to have a handful of runners in the Derby - but dual Guineas winner Henrythenavigator appears unlikely to be among them.
The Kingmambo colt was eased out to 11-2 from 4s with totesport after O'Brien poured cold water on the chance of the colt lining up on Saturday week.
The Ballydoyle trainer said: "At the moment we think the decision about running is going to be taken out of our hands.
"The groundin Epsom is soft this morning and the forecast is not for any real drying weather between now and the Derby.
"Everybody knows that Henry wants summer ground and it looks like it is not going to be like that.
"To be fair to the horse we have to do what is right for him and it wouldn't be fair to leave him in limbo land.
"At the moment and being reasonable the ground is soft and there are showers forecast.
"Being realistic for the horse it is probably in the next day or so a decision will be made, but it is probable we will have to give the Derby a miss."
Despite the prevailing soft conditions on the Downs, clerk of the course Andrew Cooper foresees a reasonably dry spell on the horizon.
He said: "I think if we were racing today I would be calling it soft ground out there.
"It's the result of two inches of rain here since Sunday morning.
"It is quite a difficult one to read forecast-wise. The Met Office are talking to me about staying in an unsettled theme, bits and bobs of rain here and there and seasonal norm temperatures.
"With the temperatures I think they are probably right, I'm not so sure about the rain situation.
"There is a lot of other weather feedback and channels I go through that certainly suggest we are going into a relatively dry spell over the next few days. I am tending to think there won't be a lot around."
O'Brien's other possibles are headed by Lingfield Derby Trial first and second Alessandro Volta and King Of Rome, Derrinstown runner-up Washington Irving and Bashkirov.
O'Brien added: "We hope to run four or five in the Derby. We obviously have Frozen Fire, King Of Rome, Washington Irving, Alexandra Volta and Bashkirov and they are all possibles at the moment.
"The two horses who ran at Lingfield both ran very good races and are going the right way.
"We are also happy with Washington Irving since his Leopardstown run and Frozen Fire has been well since York."

2.10 HAYDOCK
FAT BOY
Good second in the free handicap, then beating Tajdeef comprehensively next time out, no reason to suspect Tajdeef can reverse from here
3.15 HAYDOCK
MAJOR CADEAUX
Good performance in beating Rob Roy in a group 2 last time out a shade more comfortably than the 3/4 length margin implies, and should go well again here.
Unfortunately won't bet these as at work and the prices on Fat Boy are 5/4 from 7/4, and Major Cadeaux 6/4 from 5/2, but both should go well and worth investing if prices were to drift.

Two winners there, pretty short both of them, but both good winners, even more so Major Cadeaux as he ran the whole race with a slipped saddle so is more value then the 1/2 length margin.

8.00 WINDSOR
HOH MIKE
Lost his way at the end of last season but still remains a talented sprinter as shown by his close up 5th to Assertive on his first run of the season and through a line with Assertive has 3 lengths over likely favourite Balthazars Gift. His last 3 runs at this level have weilded to wins and a second and he looks good enough here against some mainly out of form rivals, he would be better with some early pace as he's an hold up course and possibly the race may not be run to suit him, but he's still a confident choice and 3/1 with Ladbrokes errs on the generous side.

TAJDEEF
Corrybrough will be all the rage here and is currently trading at 4/5 which is far too short. He's a big strapping horse with potential but has to prove it at this level.
Tajdeef has had 3 seconds this term all in listed company, first beaten first time out by Sir Gerry, then twice beaten by the progressive Fat Boy, the second time finishing closer beaten 3/4 length. His juvenile form is pretty decent too finsihing with a narrow defeat in a group 1. May actually be suited better by 5F as he has been getting outpaced near the finish over 6F. These two are both rated at 126, so why Tajdeef is trading at 4/1 is beyond me, and he has the experience to win this.

ROYAL ASCOT
2.30 QUEEN ANNE STAKES
CESARE
Easy winner of a listed event where he laughed at his rivals by winning by a length, value for 10, then ran 4th in a Group 1, where he really should have done better, travelling well and switched for a run without really picking up. Things that make me think he can do better, he probably needed the run as his listed race was more like an exercise hack canter, the pace wouldn't have suited him and he is at least a 7lb better horse at Ascot, only ever suffering two defeats here. This is not the strongest group 1, though it is competitive, and I believe Cesare has a group 1 in him, and betfairs 8/1 is certainly attractive.
3.05 KINGS STAND STAKES
FLEETING SPIRIT
Will be short, 9/4 is best but hard to see defeat after scintillating comeback winning nicely in a group 2 last time out, juvenile record is impressive too, only suffering defeats by Natagora (guineas winner) and Nadhooh who also ran well in the guineas. Add to the fact that she gets weight all round here and the 9/4 actually looks on the generous side.
3.45 ST JAMES PALACE STAKES
HENRYTHENAVIGATOR
Unbackable at a best priced 4/6, but surely the class act of the season so far. Improved to beat New Approach further than at Newmarket in the Irish Guineas and hard to see defeat.

Just watched Jamie Spencer hack up on Art Conisseur, again he breaks him out last, drawn number 2 on the left, takes him into the middle behind a wall of horses with no room, so when he makes his move has to move him back to the left behind a wall of horses so he ends up right on the left hand side again. Fortunately the horse is a lot better than the jockey and wins by 3 lengths (probably value for 7). Peculiar riding.

CALMING INFLUENCE
Stands out like a beacon of quality in this field of averageness, a big field but not many with a chance. Plenty to like about his narrow win in listed company and look an improver and a chance for Godolphin to get onto the board. Trading at 9/2 on betfair.
3.05
HEAVEN SENT
Has good solid group 2/3 form and when beaten has run against good horses, unbeaten in 2 this season, and though clearly not cheveley parks best, should take the beating here. Trading at 5/2.
3.45
DUKE OF MARMALADE
Like Henrythenavigator yesterday, this one is going to be hard to beat, despite the short price (trading at around 6/4). Has two group 1 successes already this season, and defeats last season tended to be to the best horses. Defeat is extremely unlikely.
4.20 ASCOT
Bankable looks nailed on here, but you can't really take 2/1 and less about a horse in a handicap on a track where it can be difficult to get a run and is no value but should win.
4.55 ASCOT
DANEHILL DESTINY
These races can be hard to predict, especially with yesterdays 100/1 winner in a listed event, but there was plenty to like about the way Danehill Destiny brushed aside the potentially useful Prolific at Windsor and should improve again. Trading at 7/2 which is slightly skinny but should go very well.

Need to get some winners. All these are Ascot...
2.30 SOUTH CENTRAL
You don't get many debut winners winning by 13 lengths even if it was a Carlisle maiden, so no need to get too carried away by the form. However, was in a reasonably fast time, hasn't raced again before being aimed for this race and would expect a bit of improvement, and trainer won this race in 2005. Trading at around 5/2.
Mitchita may be best in the 3.05 but it's a bit trappy, full of fillies with beaten Oaks form and no-one really progressive in there and the race is best avoided.
3.45 YEATS
This race revolves around whether Coastal Path's French form is better than Yeat's Group 1 form, which seems unlikely. Yeat's can come off a slow or fast pace has the ability to quicken at the end of 2M 4F and has a near perfect record over this distance and it is folly to expect him to be beaten here even at a short price of 11/8, none of the main horses have been beaten at Ascot yet, and make it Yeats to complete the hattrick.
4.55 UNNEFER
Cecil's horse finished a very good second to Tajaweed in a group 3 before winning a listed event beating Pampas Cat who reopposes in this listed event, he is up to this class, so it is surprising to see him at 9.5/1 with betfair this morning. These races can throw up strange results (note the 100/1 winner earlier this week) but theres every reason to think that he will run his race and go close today.

ASCOT
In the 2.30 Cuis Ghaire sets a very high standard for the others to aim at, already an impressive winner at Group 3, and is at a far higher level than anything else, unfortunately the 10/11 price tag reflects that and for that reason is left alone.
In the 3.05 Hebridean may prove best as appears to be improving, but its a muddling race, mostly with handicapped form and easily passed over as a betting contest.
The Coronation at 3.45 is very poor with no outstanding filly in it, I'd tend to pass over Spacious 2nd in the Guineas as that form may not be that good and go for Modern Look but again this isn't a race to bet much in.
It's even harder to try and find a winner from the other 3 races. Bit of a disappointing card.

Never a bad card if you can find the winners. Well done. That Epsom fillies form is looking good.
Tomorrow is the same, nothing much I fancy. Sakhees Secret should go well in the sprint, but have a feeling things won't go his way this season, has several to beat here and not good value at 9/2 thats for sure.

Just had this from a friend, no idea how reliable it is though:
"You may be interested to know that Morse is running today at Wolverhampton (4.15). Jamie Osborne thinks that if he produces the form on the racecourse that he is producing at home, he will win today's race "at a canter". He is dropping down in class but Jamie says that he is working at home like a horse that should be in a race 2 classes higher. The indications are that SP will be 10/1 so he is definitely worth an each way flutter .....but don't go mad!!"
Still 25.0 on Betfair so doesn't look like it's exactly being backed off the boards
