Smith welcomes Denman National designs
British Horseracing Authority chief handicapper Phil Smith was buoyed by the news Gold Cup winner Denman is being considered for a tilt at the John Smith's Grand National.
The nine-year-old has not been seen since his Festival heroics last March after suffering from a fibrillating heart, but Paul Nicholls has suggested he could head to Aintree after aiming to defend his Gold Cup crown.
Smith said: "It's very exciting news for the race and obviously it will make me think a bit. It's the culmination of everything we have been trying to achieve for the last 10 years as we have been trying to get the better horses to run."
He added: "Ten years ago, the highest-rated horse in the race was 150 and now it could be 182 so it is really fantastic.
"At the bottom end, the lowest-rated horse was in 1999 was 110 and last year it was 138 so the race has improved by two stone in 10 years. It's great for the sponsors as they are putting a lot of money in and they deserve the best horses.
"I suggested they dropped the top weight to 11st 10lb from 11st 12lb and that has been accepted by everyone and obviously that has encouraged Denman's connections.
"Obviously all the news is about Denman but I suspect there will be a lot of other exceptionally good horses in there as well.
"Denman's entry will make the race but I also think the race will be the making of Denman so it is great news all round."
Champion trainer Paul Nicholls, speaking in his weekly column in the Racing Post, said: "I've been asked several times whether Denman will have an entry in the Grand National and I can put an end to the speculation by saying he will be entered.
"I'm coming round to the idea of running him. The more I think about it the more it makes sense with Denman in his prime. Phil Smith has offered a carrot by reducing the top weight and as Denman is rated 182, the Grand National handicap is going to be very interesting."

7/1 with Totesport when I was on there a few minutes ago.
Free Agent is 25s for the Derby on there. Was 8/1 on Skybet last week. Odd.
But done it to win as part of my Lucky15 with Kauto, Binocular and Master Minded.
Doing Twist Magic e/w as well.
Any clue what race Tidal Bay will run at Cheltenham as it is down for the same race as MM and in another race as well...

Spectator dies at Kent racecourse
A spectator has died after collapsing in the betting ring at Folkestone Racecourse in Kent.
He was initially treated by paramedics who called the Kent Air Ambulance. The helicopter landed on the track before the 1435 GMT race, but he later died.
Neil Mackenzie Ross, clerk of the course, said the day had been marred by the death of the man who was thought to be in his 50s.
"Unfortunately he died and it has been a sad day," he added.
Racing was delayed for about 40 minutes.

Anyone who takes that needs their brains testing. Last years winner went off at 7/1 (from being backed in), assuming that is a low price for a favourite in the national, Denman would need to be 2/5F for the Gold Cup to match the 12/1 double which is clearly ridiculous. Even if he was 3/1F for gold cup and national that still works out at 15/1.

Just saying its really bad value, plus you will lose if he wins the gold cup and then doesn't run in the national which is a distinct possibility.
Ian Hart
08-01-2009, 09:28 AM
Quite right Saul. If people are intent on backing him (as a double) in both, they would do much better to do it as two singles - i.e. back him in the Gold Cup, and if he wins, keep your returns aside and put it on him in the National on the day. That way, if he doesn't run in the National you'll not lose your winnings. Well, not unless he runs and loses, that is!
And as Saul intimates, you'll surely get better odds in the National on the day than the current "double" odds are giving you.
Why cant you just take the price on both races and double it up? Bookies can be wankers at times.
Denman 6/4 for gold cup
Denman 16/1 for grand national skybet!

They won't lay that bet, because its a conflicting bet, i.e. if he wins the gold cup, his price will be shorter for the grand national immediately after the race, so they are taking that into account when they offer 12/1. No bookmaker will offer you that double above.
I'm going to try it with an independent bookies in Purley they can be a bit dopey at times.

Nicholls not looking beyond Gold with Denman
A run in the John Smith's Grand National seems unlikely for Denman unless something goes wrong in his pursuit of back-to-back Cheltenham Gold Cups.
The nine-year-old has not been seen in racecourse action since winning National Hunt's blue riband last March after suffering from a fibrillating heart, but is on course for a return, possibly in the Aon Chase at Newbury on February 7.
Recent reports have suggested a start in April's Aintree spectacular is high on champion trainer Paul Nicholls' agenda, but he admits a defence of his Gold Cup crown remains Denman's number one priority.
"We've entered Denman for the Grand National but that is as far as it has got at this stage," Nicholls told Teletext.
"If he has a hard race in the Gold Cup like last year that would make it improbable but if something went wrong or he fell at the first, we'd kick ourselves if he wasn't entered.
"It will be some time before a final decision is made so any speculation otherwise before then is exactly that."

Johnson considers Drever retirement
Howard Johnson is leaning towards retiring his three-time World Hurdle hero Inglis Drever as the ten-year-old continues to recover from a hock injury.
The gelding was pulled up on his comeback in the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury in November and while a final decision on his future will be made following a scan next week, Johnson feels it may be better to let him bow out now.
Speaking on Channel 4's The Morning Line, Johnson said: "He'll have a scan next week and we'll either pull stumps and retire him or get him on the road for a fortnight to three weeks."
The handler added: "I think we'll maybe pull stumps to be honest as the horse has done us proud. I don't want to get him back to Cheltenham and then he is pulled up coming down the hill and booed off the racecourse.
"He's sound at the moment and he's been in the jacuzzi. We'll maybe put a set of shoes on him if the vet says it's OK next week and we'll give him a go, but it's 60-40 against him coming back to be honest."

I had to laugh at the ATR commentary in the 1:30 at Southwell today. I laid the hot favourite, which rather fortunately was overtaken by Hurricane Coast in the very last stride. The commentator (who had apparently backed the winner and had therefore been focussed on it) was very critical of Hurricane Coast's jockey, Holly Hall, stating that if she had not got up to win she would have come in for severe criticism for not using her whip at all, as he had been watching closely and the horse had clearly needed a couple of slaps, which if she had given them would have resulted in him winning more comfortably.
The name of the race? Weatherby's Hands and Heels apprentice handicap!
He later confessed that several hundred people had texted/e mailed the programme to point out his error!

Administrators appointed at Great Leighs
Great Leighs racecourse, the first new track to be opened in Britain since 1927, has been placed in administration.
Carlton Siddle and Nick Edwards of Deloitte, the business advisory firm, have been appointed as administrators to the group of companies that own and operate the all-weather complex in Chelmsford, Essex.
Siddle said: "We have today been appointed administrators and will be assessing the position of the group in order to determine the best outcome for its creditors. We will continue to work with existing management and key business partners to continue to trade the business in the short term."
He went on: "We are currently in discussions with the sport's regulatory body, the British Horseracing Authority. in respect of securing the course's racing licence and ability to continue to trade as a going concern while we investigate the opportunity of a sale."
Great Leighs had been refused a temporary licence by the BHA regulatory committee and the meeting scheduled for next Thursday was switched to Kempton.
A statement on www.britishhorseracing.com said: "The racecourse managing executive has been operating under temporary licences since January 1, the latest of which expired at midnight on January 15.
"An application at the hearing was made for a new temporary licence to operate until the end of January. The committee declined to grant a further temporary licence.
"The effect is that, unless and until a new application is made and is successful, there is no licence in place for racing at Great Leighs.
"The Racing Department of the BHA are dealing with the Fixture List and racing administration consequences of this."
Built on the 430-acre site of the former Essex showground north of Chelmsford, the track opened its doors in April last year

Denman handed Hennessy entry
Reigning Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Denman is among 19 entries for the Hennessy Gold Cup at Leopardstown on February 8.
While the AON Chase at Newbury a day earlier is his comeback target, the son of Presenting has as expected been given an entry in the Irish showpiece a day earlier as a back-up plan.
Paul Nicholls would appear to have a very strong hand with Gold Cup third and Lexus casualty Neptune Collonges also featuring among the possibles, as well as stablemates Nozic and Star De Mohaison.
Lexus Chase hero Exotic Dancer could head back across the Irish Sea in an attempt to plunder another valuable prize, while fellow Jonjo O'Neill inmate Albertas Run is also entered.
Air Force One and The Listener complete the raiding party, while Thyne Again, Snowy Morning and Mister Top Notch feature among the home team.

THREE-TIME World Hurdle winner Inglis Drever has been retired.

Interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens now.
I don't know whether you think that Slip (the second favourite) is the likely winner?
There's a recent form line through a horse called Tenement. Slip gave him 6lbs and a 3-length beating in a 1m 2f claimer at Lingfield. At the same track, Sabre Light gave him 16lbs and a pushed out 11-length beating.

Quite the opposite mate. The reason I was cheering for you with Sabre Light was that I had laid Slip. Sorry for teasing, but I thought I'd given you enough clues in my answers, and you would work it out!
However, read the story below.......
Ian Hart
22-01-2009, 11:04 PM
You know the old adage that if something looks to good to be true, it probably is.........
Having reviewed the form last night and this morning, I decided I would have a bet today. In the 7:20 at Kempton, Slip seemed a decent lay, if the price was right. I went onto Betfair to look at the prices pretty early (about 8am) and couldn't believe what I was looking at. Both Slip and Sabre Light were showing at odds on. You can sometimes get silly prices on Betfair early in the morning before the market properly forms (in fact I regularly lay horses at around 1am) but this was just ridiculous. How could punters be such daft idiots to allow a horse to be laid at odds on when there is another horse also being offered at odds on in the race!
Clearly the market was going to adjust itself soon, so without more ado I immediately lumped my lay on Slip at the price on offer, 1.7 - in fact, it was such an amazing price I risked double my normal liability.
About mid afternoon, I thought I'd check the latest price. So, I went back on to Betfair via the "recently viewed markets" tab, and it was only then that I realised why the price was so low. It had taken me directly to the place market rather than the win market! Somehow this morning I had accidentally clicked on the place market in error. I was the daft idiot, not the other punters :o :clown:
So now I was having to hope that Slip, with double my usual liability, not only failed to win, but failed to place.
Thank God it finished fifth! I might try place laying more often :D

Gooders
23-01-2009, 10:40 AM
That's good then. No, I think your clues were very obtuse!
You had presumably spotted the same form line I had that gave Slip no chance - I cannot fathom how it was joint 7/4 favourite with Sabre Light in the morning.
Thing is, there were "experts" tipping Slip up in all the sports pages - do these people actually have to do any work or do they just plump and then write some bollocks jusitfying their selection?
In the event, Slip finished more than 20 lengths behind - which is exactly what the form said would happen.
Ian Hart
23-01-2009, 11:24 AM
Obtuse?!?! I told you I'd be cheering for your horse. I then I confirmed your comment that I normally lay, responding "You're getting there...." You call that obtuse? :D
On a more serious note, I would rarely go so far as saying a horse had no chance. But it seemed to me that Slip's form could not be compared on a line with a couple of others in the race, and he would have to improve significantly to win it, or they would have to run poorly. Either of those things could of course have happened, but the low price for Slip seemed to make it a very good value lay - although not as good a value as I'd thought I'd got!
You read the form very skillfully Gooders. The "experts" you refer to are obliged to tip a horse in every race and, almost by necessity, can only give a cursory glance to most races before making their selection. And especially where it's just a minor evening meeting, the amount of time they spend researching their selections is probably even less compared to the day's main meeting. That's why by just concentrating on a few races, and spending a little time in researching, you have every reason to outperform them - and you clearly did :p

Well, I don't actually do very well but that's because I knowingly take risks with my selections in order to try to rack up a big win on my multi's.
But the guys I'm talking about are the ones that didn't just nominate a horse - they actually produced a write up extolling the reasons why Slip would win - to me, they must have therefore had at least a cursory glance at the form. And these people are paid to do this!
There are so many bent results these days (especially on the all-weather) that it is very difficult to just use form to try to find winners but really, yesterdays result was as foregone a conclusion as you could wish for.
Sabre Light won by 7 lengths from the 66/1 outsider in a small field. Slip was nearly 25 lengths behind, finishing 5th of the 6 runners.
Although that bloke who accidentally laid him for a place was probably a bit nervous. :)

Actually, he didn't watch the race. Instead he was forced to accompany Mrs H to the cinema. (Australia - bloody awful film!) He returned home around 11:30 fully expecting to be out of pocket, and was very pleasantly surprised when he saw the result.

Horses are not machines, and run inconsistently. (And yes, some horses, particularly in jump racing, are deliberately prepared not to win). And that's why I enjoy laying. But because horses can be inconsistent, it can work both ways, and so I would rarely conclude that a horse had no chance at all, whatever the form lines suggest.
There was a good example in the 1:10 at Lingfield - my only bet today. I laid the favourite, believing that either the 2nd or 3rd favourites could beat him. In fact he beat both of them very comfortably - but he was beaten instead by a rank outsider whose previous performances had been hopeless, and on form lines would be beaten by at least four horses in the race by a country mile.

Nicholls treads warily with Denman
With the weather forecast to take a turn for the worse in the next few days, Paul Nicholls has underlined he will not rush into a decision on when or where Denman will return.
Although last year's Cheltenham Gold Cup hero is still on course for Newbury's Aon Chase on Saturday week, the recent wet spell and the promise of cold conditions could turn the ground against his star stayer.
Nicholls has entered the nine-year-old for the Irish Hennessy 24 hours after the Newbury race and a trip to Ascot or Wincanton is also an option.
However, the Ditcheat maestro is keen to do what is best for the horse following his heart problem and Denman could bypass all those engagements if conditions are not right.
"We could do with a dry spell and we will have to see what the weather does," he said.
"Denman is entered in Ireland on the Sunday - I don't really want to go there, and I suppose there is the Ascot Chase or coming to Wincanton for the CGA Chase.
"So there are a couple of options, but if he were to go straight to the Gold Cup without a run, so be it."
Denman, who has been off the track since his Gold Cup win last March, is the general 7-4 favourite for a repeat victory.

Odds say McCoy is up against it
Mcoy is 2 winners away from 3,000 winner :lux:
Bookmakers do not seem to believe Tony McCoy will bring up his incredible 3,000th jumps winner on Saturday's big card at Sandown.
The 34-year-old champion jockey endured frustration when today's meeting at Chepstow was abandoned and he will head to Esher needing two winners from his three rides, but William Hill are offering 10-1 that he pulls it off.
McCoy's first mount comes in the £4 million totescoop6 Handicap Hurdle on Nicky Henderson's Afrad, who has not been seen since October 2007.
"He has been off for a long time with a few little problems and it's time to go," said the trainer. "He's in good form but the ground will be quite testing, so we just have to be hopeful."
In the following race, the totesport.com Master Handicap Chase, Oliver Sherwood is pleased to take advantage of a rare chance to use McCoy on Eric's Charm, who has put in some of his very best efforts at the course.
He was eighth in the Thyestes Chase at Gowran last week and the trainer said: "It was unraceable ground in Ireland really and he loves Sandown. I'd hope he has a big chance.
"AP rode him a lot as a youngster and was second to Inglis Drever on him in a novice hurdle at Warwick a few years ago. He is not available very often and you can't leave him on the subs bench if you've got a chance."
In the Totesport 0800 221 221 Handicap Chase he gets the leg up on Good Company, owned by his boss JP McManus and trained by Jonjo O'Neill.
McManus's racing manager Frank Berry said: "He jumped nicely when winning at Haydock the last day. He has gone up a bit in the weights but Jonjo has been very happy with him and he'll be hoping for a nice run again."
McCoy has two more chances at Fontwell on Sunday, riding Burton Port for Henderson and Blue Teal for Henrietta Knight.

Walsh gets Denman ride in Aon Chase
RUBY WALSH will ride Denman in the Aon Chase on Saturday, taking over from Sam Thomas, who was on board when the unbeaten chaser won the Gold Cup last March.
However, no decision has been reached over who will ride Denman when he returns to Cheltenham to defend his crown on March 13.
Walsh gets the nod for Aon Chase
PICTURE: Edward Whitaker Paul Nicholls, outlining riding plans six days in advance of Denman’s eagerly awaited reappearance at Newbury, said on Sunday: “Ruby will ride Denman in the Aon; Sam will be riding for me at Warwick that day.
“It’s straightforward really; Ruby is my stable jockey, he’s the number one. That’s the way it’salways been and Sam understands that situation, as do all my jockeys. Ruby has been schooling Denman, he rode the horse in a racecourse gallop at Wincanton on Friday morning and he rides on Saturday.
“I’ve phoned Sam’s agent, Sam Stronge, this morning to outline my running plans for next weekend.
“But I stress here that we are talking about Saturday, and not the Gold Cup. Absolutely nothing has been decided as to who rides Denman or Kauto Star or Neptune Collonges at Cheltenham. The Gold Cup is a different race, different day, end of story for now.”
Although Denman has not raced since that unforgettable day last March, speculation has never gone away as to whether Thomas, as a Gold Cup-winning jockey, would remain on the horse this season, or whether Walsh, as Nicholls’ stable jockey, would get back on board.
In November and December, Thomas endured a luckless spell when taking over on Nicholls’ first-string runners during Walsh’s latest injury. High-profile defeats, in particular on Kauto Star in the Betfair Chase and Big Buck’s in the Hennessy, meant he did not always come in for rideshe might otherwise have expected to pick up.
However, his own performances in the saddle are not the primary reason for his being denied the opportunity to ride Denman this weekend, rather, Nicholls’ relationship with his stable jockey would have been placed under enormous strain had Walsh not been in pole position for the ride on Saturday.
Thomas first rode Denman in a novice chase at Newbury’s Hennessy meeting in 2006, but Walsh was in the plate for all his other victories that season, notably the Royal & SunAlliance Chase.

»Gold Cup betting
Thomas was back on board in the Hennessy 12 months later, as Walsh was off with a shoulder injury. The pair annihilated the opposition at Newbury, propelling Denman to the forefront of Gold Cup betting.
Walsh returned that Christmas in time to take over when Denman won the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown, but after he announced in early February that he would ride the 2007 Gold Cup and dual King George winner Kauto Star in the Gold Cup, Thomas was back on board Denman in the Aon Chase, as the owners were keen for the same jockey to be on board at Newbury as at Chelten-ham five weeks later.
That handed Thomas, at the time without a festival winner, the most important ride of his career, and he climaxed a fairytale season when Denman crushed Kauto Star in one of the most exciting confrontations in jumping history.
Among Denman’s likely opponents on Saturday is the Queen’s Barbers Shop, trainer Nicky Henderson indicated on Sunday, while he added that course winner The Market Man is on target for the 3m novice chase.
Air Force One could also take on Denman, trainer Charlie Mann said on Sunday, the alternative being the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup at Leopardstown on Sunday.

Newbury's star-studded Saturday card "50-50"
PROSPECTS of Newbury's £150,000 Totesport Trophy meeting going ahead on Saturday were rated at "50-50" on Tuesday morning by clerk of the course Richard Osgood.
The entire course is covered by fleece blankets as a frost protection, and Osgood was hoping that a thaw will set in to clear the "two to three centimetres" of snow on top of the sheeting.
"At least by having the fleece down we've given ourselves a chance of racing on Saturday" he said."If the snow did remain we'd just have to employ a larger work force to pull the covers off, and we can do that on Saturday morning.
"However, there are other factors, including public safety on the racecourse and car parks if it remains icy. At this stage we're 50-50, though that may be a little optimistic."
Osgood, a local weather expert, said."I've spoken to the Met Office and they tell me the outlook for the remainder of the week is uncertain. For instance, on Wednesday night we could get further snow, or maybe sleet or rain. The latter would washaway the snow, and put us in a better position. It is due to be cold on Saturday, with a maximum of 2 c. It's going to be a difficult week."
Apart from the major handicap hurdle, Newbury is set to see the return of Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Denman in the Aon Chase and could host the final preparation race of Champion Chase favourite Master Minded.

Tony McCoy's bid to reach 3,000 British and Irish National Hunt winners has stalled due to Carlisle's abandonment.
The 13-times champion jockey had four good rides at the Cumbria venue, where overnight temperatures plummeted to nearly minus-four degrees.
Clerk of the course Andrew Tulloch quickly accepted defeat following an early-morning inspection and called off Wednesday afternoon's fixture due to a frozen track.
He said: "We've had a look, but we are still frozen.
"There is unfortunately no prospect of racing."
McCoy has been stranded on the 2,998-winner mark since last Thursday

Interesting read
You win some, you lose some, and then you lose some more. Alan English on telephone tipping lines: 'Only an act of God can stop Dubai Seven Stars winning' said telephone tipster The Sweeney. It lost.
Derek Thompson: 89 tips 72 losers
guardian.co.uk,
Derek Thompson: 89 tips 72 losers. The essence of the tipster's art has always been to convince the gullible that the bookies can be bashed and that enormous profits are just around the corner.
In Flann O'Brien's 1939 novel At Swim Two Birds, this approach is memorably captured in a letter written by a certain Vernie Wright, a tipster with a Newmarket address.
'Bounty Queen was indeed a great disappointment,' Vernie writes, 'but anybody leaving me now because of bad luck would indeed be a "puzzler".
You had the losers, why not row in and make a packet over the winners that are now our due.
SENSATIONAL NEWS has reached me that certain interests have planned a gigantic coup involving a certain animal who has been saved for the past month. To all my friends forwarding 6d and two SAE's I will present this THREE-STAR CAST-IRON PLUNGER and we will have the win of our lives and all the bad luck forgotten.'
Six decades on, sixpence and a stamped addressed envelope have given way to the premium-rate phonecall, but the flow of money from punter to bookmaker has never been interrupted.
'All horseplayers die broke,' wrote Damon Runyon in 1938. A select few professional tipsters are in a position to disagree. One is Melvyn Collier, the Racing Post's Pricewise correspondent, who will soon join the ranks of those with private subscription services.
By limiting his advice to a handful of races every week, those for which the bookmakers offer morning prices, Collier has turned a profit for eight successive years. The only secret, he says, is assiduous study of the form book - and that would also apply to the country's top (and very expensive) tipping lines, ****** and Marten Julian.
Another tipster with a Newmarket address is Derek Thompson, better known as a Channel 4 racing presenter. Asked for an opinion on the merits of his fellow tipster, Collier hesitated. And then he laughed. Read on, and you'll discover why.
Clean-cut, forever smiling and keen to please - if Derek Thompson was a novel he'd be something by Barbara Cartland. His Channel 4 Racing bosses admire him because they know that if a 90-second gap appears, Thompson will ad lib 90 seconds precisely. 'Tommo' sells himself expertly as the punter's pal. On our evidence he's anything but.
Tommo brings this same effortless quality to his other job, that of professional tipster. Flick through the Racing Post and you will find him, along with many others, casting his net for more customers. Need some tips for Royal Ascot? Tommo can oblige. Just call 0901 5638238 and, for 60p a minute, you're sorted.
If you have an aversion to premium-rate telephone numbers, you can pay up front, £199.99 per year, to join the Derek Thompson Racing Club and get access to a non-premium line. There's even a visit to a Newmarket yard thrown in, an opportunity to see Tommo in the flesh. As Tommo says: 'Shame on you if you haven't joined!'
But if you're the cautious type, the kind who prefers to try before you buy, there's no shame in not joining. Far from it. In the spirit of punter solidarity, Observer Sport called Thompson's tipping line every day for four consecutive weeks, as well as those of two of his rivals. We staked a notional £50 to win on each selection and put a stopwatch on every call.
Of the 89 horses tipped by Thompson - many of them obvious and short-priced - 72 were beaten. Even though he was 40p a minute cheaper than his two rivals, one call to his line can still cost four times as much the Racing Post .
Thompson seems to believe that his callers live in a land where newspapers have been suppressed and he is the source of all information.
'I've got very good news,' he said during the second week, when he was tipping at Pontefract, as though it would never have occurred to anyone that In Space, the 5-4 favourite in the 2.45, might be in with a chance. The horse finished fifth, the same as Puffin, Thompson's tip in the 4.20. After asserting that Benedectine would 'take the beating', he moved on to a lengthy plug for his racing club.
Benedictine was second. Three tips, three losers, but for Thompson, there was no need for an explanation. Had he backed any of the three himself? Did he feel his callers' pain? We can, perhaps, deduce something from the words with which he greeted his regulars the next morning.
'Hi, it's Tommo - and I've got some good news.' It was as if Pontefract had never happened.
One of Thompson's rival services, The Sweeney, is more into bombast than intrigue. Every tip is 'a pearler' that will put his clients 'in clover', every defeat attributable to factors beyond his control: the jockey, the misleading going, the 25-1 shot that should never have been there.
His faith in his own powers would be touching, were it not so misguided. 'I have no doubt whatsoever about the victory of Dubai Seven Stars,' he said on 17 May. Only 'an act of God' could stop this filly. Step forward that act of God in the shape of Arrive, the winner at 6-1.
After tipping four losers, The Sweeney will admit to being 'not totally inspired by the profits'. In week two, he made 24 selections, but the real story was not that 19 of them were beaten, it was that learning their identity cost £64.75, or £2.69 for every tip. At 71p per tip, Thompson was practically benevolent by comparison.
The Sweeney was a master of the delaying tactic. He didn't quite reveal what he had had for breakfast, but it was close. 'Without further ado, let's skate over to Ripon,' he said one day. 'Well, not in a literal sense, of course, but with your newspapers, or whatever...'
The third tipster we followed, Henry Ponsonby, stressed almost daily that he rides out for Mick Channon, but otherwise played a straight bat. He still ran up losses of £748.10.
Over the four weeks, Thompson's tips resulted in a loss of £1,846.05, which rose to £1,921.37, with the cost of calls. Fighting off stiff competition from The Sweeney, he was confirmed as our survey's worst telephone tipster of the four weeks we covered only on the last day of 25, thanks to a clean sweep of five losers at Newbury and Thirsk, including 11-8 and 7-4 favourites. Of course, it may have been a bad four weeks for our selected tipsters, and they may not be alone in that.
Fourteen of Thompson's 17 winners were returned at 3-1 or worse; five were odds-on. In short, they were never going to put callers ahead of the game. In the Channel 4 Racing Guide to Form and Betting , Thompson's advice to readers is brief: 'Never bet odds-on - it's as simple as that.'
If only. On 11 May, Thompson plumbed the depths by tipping two 4-6 shots, both of which were beaten. On Friday, Thompson defended his tipping line: 'If people don't like the service, then don't ring.'
Asked how much he thought callers should have on his tips, he said, 'At the most, a fiver.' Did he back his own selections? That, said Tommo, was 'a very personal question'. When pressed, he replied that he invested his own money 'as often as I see fit'

DENMAN will not run in the John Smith's Grand National following a comprehensive defeat for last season's Gold Cup winner on his return to action at Kempton on Saturday.
Connections of the nine-year-old, who was 10-1 favourite for the race with Ladbrokes, have decided against Aintree this year.
Trainer Paul Nicholls told racingpost.com: "I met with Paul Barber and Harry Findlay on Sunday night and we decided not to aim Denman at the National.
I hope people heeded my warning a few weeks ago not to back him at the ludicrous ante-post price he was.

I recall having a discussion recently with Gooders on this thread when I pointed out that tipsters in the papers/internet often rush their selections because they have to make so many and therefore can be inaccurate in the reasons they give. There's an excellent example in the Sporting Life today in the first race at Wincanton. Here's what they say:
"MORE THE MERRIER gets the vote in this opener ahead of Painter Man and Petroupetrov. This 7-year-old is a lightly-raced type and he won well earlier in the month at Kempton when he got the better of Bally Conn."
But he didn't "get the better of Bally Conn." Here's the actual race that he is referring to:
1 Bally Conn (IRE) 11-9 B Wharfe (5) M Hill 7 7/4 f
raced on outside, in touch, headway to chase leaders 3 out, narrow lead 2 out, strongly pressed last, kept on well flat opened 2/1 touched 2/1 £1000-£500 (x2)
2 1 More The Merrier (IRE) 11-8 D Jacob R H & Mrs S Alner 7 33/1
chased leader, led 3 out, narrowly headed 2 out, outpaced soon after, rallied well under pressure flat, went 2nd towards finish opened 50/1 touched 50/1

1.05 ASCOT BREEDSBREEZE
Winner of his three starts, really stepping up last time, powering clear over the last, has stamina and speed in abundance, is a good jumper and too good for these today. Fairly priced at around 6/4.
Voy Por Ustedes is probably running at his best trip today, and will be disappointing if he is beaten but unbeaten Gwanko is worth a look, a fast improver and worth taking the 16/1 for the Ryanair at Cheltenham before he runs today.

Some good racing today at kempton
2.05 ALFIE FLITTS
Won a novice hurdle in good style before becoming outclassed in a grade 1 next time, however, completely turned that form around when winning a grade 1 easily next time out reversing form with dee ee williams. Ainama is a hot favourite and has bags of potential but has only competed in one race a grade 4, and Alfie Flitts is good value today trading at 7.5/1 on betfair.
2.40 HERECOMESTHETRUTH
Has three good wins on the board and is easily preferred to Ouzbeck who has one win one fall and one unseating in his last three starts, a bit of odds on in the morning, could be value if he drifts. Solid.

2.10 -Ballycarney
2.40 Kicks For Free
Only a three runner race now, Surely Kicks For Free should wrap that one up, The last two runs was a disappointment!
3.10 - Oslot - Nicholls second string, If back to its best- it should run a big race today.
3.45 - Lough Derg (NAP) The way this horse has been running lately, you cant go against it. Grade 2 today - should hack up!
4.15 - Royal Auclair -is stepping up in trip today, but you know it stays all day long. If if doesnt win today, it doesn't go to Cheltenham.

Jim Goldie's stable star Endless Power has died after fracturing his pelvis at Kempton on Saturday.
The nine-year-old had won the Grand Sefton over the Aintree fences in November and was being aimed at the Grand National. However, he was pulled up before the fourth-last in the Racing Post Chase and died just hours after the race.
A stable spokeswoman said: "He fractured his pelvis in the race. There were complications afterwards and we tried our best to save him. Unfortunately, he passed away before we even got the chance to put him down."
Endless Power earned over £100,000 in prize-money and won six of his 28 races.

Gutsy Lough Derg lands second National Spirit By James Burn3.50PM 22 FEB 2009
Report: Fontwell, Sunday
Totesport.com National Spirit Hurdle (Grade 2) 2m4f
LOUGH DERG made itback-to-back wins in the National Spirit with a typically gutsy display at Fontwell on Sunday.
The popular nine-year-old, whose highly emotional success 12 months ago left jockey Tom Scudamore in tears, was again forced to do it the hard way as he cut out his running with only third-placed Hills Of Aran, a decent second behind Kasbah Bliss last time, for company.
»
That pair had a handy lead entering the home straight, although Pierrot Lunaire, representing the Paul Nicholls-Ruby Walsh team, and Straw Bear looked big dangers approaching the final flight.
Pierrot Lunaire proved to be the main rival, but as he ranged upsides the 5-2 favourite, Lough Derg repelled him with the style and attitude that has now resulted in three wins from his last five starts.
Scudamore, who has ridden Lough Derg to eight of his 12 victories, said: "He keeps improving and has won twice away from Ascot this season.
"He's a credit to himself and the team and it's a pleasure to ride him. He's a freak who loves racing and loves life.
"The crowd were great, he has become very popular. Even at Ascot when he was second he got a bigger cheer than the winner.
"He reminds me of a Kenyan distance runner who runs a marathon and after a quick drink of water they are ready to go again.
"We'll sit down and talk with David [Pipe, trainer]. He's in the Coral Cup and the World Hurdle, but I think if it's really heavy the owner wants to go for the Champion Hurdle."

Passing on a tip I have had over here for Majestic Oak at Clonmel this afternoon. Priced at around 5/2 and Ruby riding - looks a fairly obvious selection anyway - although I won't be backing it myself.

"Andrew Thornton was suspended three days for weighing in over 1lb lighter than which he weighed out aboard Radar Love, who won the Birthday Sponsorship At racesponsors.co.uk Handicap Chase at Fontwell.
Radar Love, trained by Paul Webber, was consequently disqualified, with runner-up Silver Steel promoted into first place."
Fun and games here. Firstly, the hot favourite Silver Steel was so far ahead coming away from the last that thousands were bet on him at 1.01 on the exchanges. Then Silver Steel began stopping, and Thornton produced Radar Love from nowhere to overtake him on the line.
But that wasn't the end of the drama. About 10 minutes later it was announced that the Clerk of the Scales had lodged an objection against the winner. Jockeys are allowed to weigh in up to 1lb lighter (to allow for weight loss during the race) but apparently Thornton was 1.5lb lighter. Shortly, it was announced the objection had been sustained, and Radar Love was placed last.
Punters who had backed the favourite were seen crawling over the ground looking for (now) winning tickets they had thrown away! And one of the Exchanges had already settled bets in favour of Radar Love - not sure how they resolved that one!

First day of the Flat - huge fields at Doncaster. Great racing from Nad Al Sheba. Quite a good all-weather card at Lingfield.
Probably a day for watching rather than lumping on though.

Think I prefer jumps to flat, my parents live about 5 miles from Ludlow racecourse so I tend to go there quite a lot, when the sun is out there are not many nicer places to be. Also like the fact that the best jumps horses aren't retired after a year or two

Yeah your not wrong of course, Bill Turner the trainer won this race last year and he says this horse is better than SALLYS DILEMA (last years winner) was at this time last year.

I had quite a lot on them at around 6/4
Ecuador should have won, but Brazil went 1-0 up after 70 mins, so laid a load off and was 'all green', then backed the draw but only for a tenner ...... Ecuador score a last min equaliser to give me a small win but should have been a big old win... ah well

Won his maiden at the back end of last season and won a handicap by 11 lengths at Yarmouth this afternoon.

Hayley Turner stood down for 12 months
HAYLEY TURNER, who has become one of racing's most high-profile ambassadors, has been stood down for a year after seeing the BHA's chief medical advisor Dr Michael Turner on Tuesday.
The meeting was to review her condition after the jockey had been knocked unconscious in a fall on the Newmarket gallops on March 3.
Turner hit the headlines last year when she became the first female jockey to ride 100 winners in a calendar year.
She said: "I met with Dr Turner today and reluctantly on his part I know, the BHA has had to stand me down for a year because of my head injury unfortunately.
"I am absolutely devastated. I know I am very lucky to be in one piece and I will be back riding, but a year is long time and it's very out of routine for me. I'm used to doing nothing but riding and obviously it is frustrating."
Dr Turner said: "Having carefully studied the results of recent tests and consulted expert opinion, I was unable to recommend that her license be renewed until 12 months from the date of the accident.
"Hayley has recovered well from her injuries but you cannot take any chances in cases like this.
"She remains under regular medical review and is due to see her own specialist atAddenbrookes in early June. Hayley is obviously disappointed but understands my decision."
Turner's agent, Guy Jewell, is expecting Turner to be preoccupied by media work during her enforced absence.
Jewell said: "She is devastated to be signed off for a year but you can't mess around with head injuries.
"The best thing is that she is absolutely fine and she will be back.
"You look at the poorlad in Ireland [Matt O'Connor] and even away from racing over the last few months. At times you might think you're unlucky, but in the cold light of day you are luckier than you think.
"You would hope with her media skills there might be a few days on the box for her coming up."
Ladbrokes, Coral, Skybet and Blue Square all said they would refund stakes on Hayley Turner special bets for the 2009 Flat season.
