I hedged on Rip Van Winkle and Twice Over, so supplemented my winnings a bit. I thought it was a brilliantly judged ride, tbh - the young Frenchman went too soon, IMHO.
Puddle Duck in the 4.05 is the difference between my current winnings of £100 and potential winnings of £900!

Well I've had a good long look this morning and these are the ones to avoid, I reckon:
1.45 An impossible race full of sprinters that take it in turns to beat each other. Just about the only one that appears to be in any way reliable is Hamish McGonagall, so I'll go with him.
2.15 I'd give Waiter's Dream a sporting chance at a decent price.
2.50 Have to row in with Rewilding who has just about the best form.
3.25 They all have Byword to beat, I should think.
4.05 Another impossible race but I reckon Puddle Duck is a decent each-way proposition.
4.40 And a nice small field for the last race to give us all a chance to recover any losses. Not. I think Splinter Cell e/w has to be the call.
1st 9/1. 1st 7/2. 1st 2/1. 3rd 3/1, 1st 8/1.
I am, of course, now going down the road to place some of my ill-gotten gains on Splinter Cell e/w in the last!

Also as a side note, if Rewilding does win or run well that will surely knock his prices down for the Arc de Triomphe, in which he is currently priced at 33/1 - well worth a small punt regardless.
Dropped with most bookies to 14/1 now, although William Hill are 20/1. Frankie D and bin Suroor both coy when asked about the Arc, "One step at a time".

timeform don't fancy him.
Timeform 1-2-3:
1. Elyaadi 2. Salute Him (IRE) 3. Martyr
Timeform View:
Martyr is the obvious starting point having turned what looked a competitive handicap at Glorious Goodwood into a procession. He must go close under a 4 lb penalty, but Irish raiders Elyaadi and Salute Him offer better value, with the former taken to come out on top.

Gooders

Nor do I.
Martyr is my banker today. Won in an absolute canter last time, albeit against slightly weaker opposition. If he runs up to that form again he wins, I reckon.
Gooders
18-08-2010, 08:02 AM
Or maybe not. Been looking at the card too long and I've got the yips now. :)
1.45 My original fancy was Chilly Filly but I'm not altogether sure it'll beat the other Johnston runner and it's also shown one or two signs of having its own ideas so I think I'm going to switch to Satwa Moon instead.
2.15 Race full of tough stayers this and if you back King Of Wands, Opinion Poll, Electrolyser or Illustrious Blue you'll get a run for your money. He's a bit of a Goodwood specialist having won 50% of his races on that course but he's a trier so he'll do for me.
2.50 Wouldn't put you off Approve or Temple Meads with slight preference for the former and Casual Glimpse is not without a chance at a price either if you ignore his Epsom run where he didn't appear to handle the track too well. However, Shropshire could be absolutely anything after just one race and I might take a chance that he's actually pretty good.
3.25 I've been banging on about Martyr and determined to back him after seeing the way he destroyed the opposition last time but I hadn't really considered anything else in the race. Having had a good look, I think he has a lot to find with Overturn, to be honest - and Elyaadi looks pretty good too. The trouble with horses that win so easily is that you don't get toi find out what they'll find off the bridle. If I do back Martyr, and I probably will, I will definitely have a saver on Overturn.
4.05 Can't see beyond the obvious Face The Problem in this one.
4.40 Small field - no real value - no bet.

Gooders, how certain are you on those selections?
Not as confident as I was yesterday Bellyman. Apart from Face The Problem which I expect to hose up (but it is only 5/4!)
As I said earlier, I've been changing my mind all morning.
For what it's worth, I've done my original 4 selections because too often in the past we've seen what happens when you change your mind:
Chilly Filly 1.45
Illustrious Blue 2.15
Casual Glimpse 2.50
Martyr 3.25
And then I've restricted myself to one "alternate" bet involving:
Life And Soul 1.45
King Of Wands 2.15
Shropshire 2.50
Overturn 3.25
Bigtoe - personally I would do a Lucky 31 (5 singles, 10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 4-folds and an accumulator) and I'd do it with a bookie that offers treble odds for one winner.
Bellyman
18-08-2010, 10:29 AM

I am going to do E/W Trebles or Doubles, which is better?
I saw your PM Bellyman.
If you have £10 and five selections you could do 10 £1 win doubles.
Or you could do 10 £1 win trebles.
Or you could do a 30p win Lucky 31.
As Godders says - if you do doubles you've statistically more chance of getting a return but if you do trebles you'll win more providing you get 3 winners.
Gooders
18-08-2010, 11:10 AM

Damn right. Last years best fillies (Sariska, Midday) versus this years (Snow Fairy).
My head tells me that last year's were much better but my heart wants Snow Fairy to win.
I notice Capponi is back over a mile tomorrow. Saw it run over 10 furlongs at Goodwood and it looked all over the winner 2 out and didn't get home. I said to the family that it would be back over a mile next time and that I would back it, so I'd best stick with that.
Maqaasid will rightly be favourite for the 2.15 but Paul Cole's Rimth won easy on debut and lots of winners have come out of that race. Could be smart.
In the first race I think Wootton Bassett will take all the beating, with Diamond Geezah as the likely danger.
The last two races I won't bother with.

I assume all these outsiders blew out last night?
Had a longer look at the York card this morning.
1.45 Simply cannot see beyond Wootton Bassett. Unfortunately, nor can anyone else it seems and the best price currently available is 2/1. There are various form lines which imply that he will outclass this field and there have already been a number of offers made for him, which is another very positive sign. The best tip is that Hanagan chose him over Majestic Myles, who is no slouch himself.
2.15 Wanted to back Rimth in this but a (tenuous-ish) form line with The Thrill Is Gone implies that he has many, many lengths to find with Maqaasid, who is a worthy short-priced favourite (5/4 is the best you'll get).
2.50 As I said last night, I'll stick with Capponi who might well have won at Goodwood if the race was over a mile (as todays is) and Aattash has come out since and franked the form easily.
3.25 I think Sariska will win but if I back anything it will be Snow Fairy, because my heart has always ruled my head.

If you are reasonably confident that you will get 2 winners then it's probably worth saving a little bit of money and doing a Yankee (11 bets instead of 15).

If you had 15pts to bet I would do a yankee and 4pts on Capponi, singles on the other 3 will just be too small a return to be justified, better having it on Caponi or increasing your unit stake for the yankee by a little

I have about £20-25 to play with today.
So general consensus is yankee £1.50 unit stake win yankee - £16.50.?
Then might just do snow fairy and another selection in a double.

I would suggest doing a £1 win yankee with a £2 e/w accumulator. This way if all 4 come up you will have the 4 up for £3 and not just £1.
That will give you a tenner to play with in the other races

I'm going for the same 3 but think Sariska will be too good in the 3.25
Confident/stupid enough to have gone for trebles, starting to get pangs so may have to go back and do doubles.

Not really fancying anything today, although I may play around with the big races.
4:05 Zarebiya is a cracking horse, will most likely win this - however I like Ceilidh House e/w as my bet for this with an ok draw.
4:40 Perfect Blossom may not have the best draw but has been progressive to say the least, 6/1 is a great price.

Wootton Bassett
Maqaasid
Capponi
Sariska
and then
Cape To Rio
Rimth

Bellyman, if VC do refund (in my experience they're one of the tighter ones) then I expect any multis will be treated as a non runner (so trebles become doubles and so on)
Mind you I think Skybet stated 'all single bets will be refunded' so not certain if multis in their eyes are all losers

Not as simple as that
People betting on her balances up the books, so if they take money on one horse it helps pay those punters who have money on the winning horse, If they laid Sariska heavily as they felt she wouldnt win then it would 'green' up their book big time
Instead of having a 100k pay out on midday it might be a 200k payout on her if they decalre Sariska a non runner

1.45 I'm not sure Joe Fanning has selected the right one of Johnston's runners (assuming he had the choice) - I reckon Bay Willow has a very good chance. Alternate choice would be Montparnasse.
2.15 I think Rainbow Peak will take this in his stride on the way to better things.
2.50 Tricky race and perhaps the safest option on the balance of form is Red Jazz. Certainly owes me some money does that one.
3.25 I've been backing Equiano all season but I have a sneaky feeling that last year's winner may go in again at a price. Certainly you'll get a run for your money anyway, on Borderlescott.

Not sure about Rainbow Peak dropping back in distance, was all over it at Ascot over 1mile2f, but not sure the drop back will suit as well, may well hack up but not for me

Is Equiano badly over-priced against Starspangledbanner? 5 furlongs (1000m) is E's specialist, while Star has excelled over further

Could have done with Skysurfers there after getting Rio De La Plata earlier. I'm finished with Red Jazz - horse just doesn't see out its races any more.
I've got Equiano, Borderlescott and, despite vowing not to, Starspangledbanner covered in the next.
Best result for me is if the old boy can make it 3 in a row, but I can't see it.

£50 on Banner, £25 Equiano and £10 e/w on Bordelescott.
