Forgot to mention that our favourite greyhound, Boolavogue, is defending her Essex Vase title.

She has already run some heats and got through so her price has dropped down to 25's now

She runs again this evening with the final next Wednesday.

Please note though she is not in the same form as she was last year

All I can find is a sneaky fancy for Presenting Forever each-way in the 2.25 and then in the 3.00, if Garde Champetre is favourite then at the weights Sizing Australia must be the value bet.

Why was the last race a void. Lost £25 doing some blind punting. Back to footy accas for me :)

The cross country race was abandoned because of the ground so they put all the races back half an hour and did something strange with the Placepot - instead of using the 6 remaining races they said only the first 5 races would count. I guess it's because people had already made bets before the race was abandoned.

Good start for me today - I did two Lucky15's

Woolcombe Folly
Time For Rupert
Zaynar
Little Josh

and

Woolcombe Folly

Karabak

Is it possible to make such direct comparisons over such long distances? Mind you from what I remember the front two went off pretty quick in MM race so maybe it is. I would just imagine that two races run at two different paces could take a very different time. MM was very impressive I must say, with hindsight a great price!!

I don't think theres a comparison, Woolcombe won well enough but had a much harder race than Master Minded did who cruised to victory without extending, just because the times are the same, doesn't allow you to make a comparison.

BHA PROBE NEWBURY INCIDENT

The British Horseracing Authority have confirmed a full investigation is under way into Saturday's tragic incident at Newbury.

Racing was abandoned after two horses collapsed and died in the parade ring before racing and Professor Tim Morris, Director of Equine Science and Welfare for the BHA, said: "Following the tragic events at Newbury today, our sympathies go out to connections of the two horses that died, Fenix Two and Marching Song.

"We have launched a full investigation into the events before the first race. Whilst there are suspicions that an electrical fault was the cause and this is being looked into by the racecourse and relevant authorities, it is important that we investigate other possible causes.

"Both horses have been sent for post mortem examinations and samples from both horses, and from the other two horses involved in the incident, have been taken and will be analysed. We will also be testing a sample of the water supply and have secured and will review all of the CCTV footage from the racecourse stables and footage from the parade ring itself at the time.

"We have gathered evidence and statements at the racecourse from the connections involved with the incident, including trainers, jockeys, stable staff and owners, the racecourse and BHA veterinary officers, and the racecourse executive including the health and safety officer."

CABLE REMOVED FROM NEWBURY

A section of electricity cable has been removed from the paddock area at Newbury following the death of two horses at the course on Saturday.

Fenix Two and Marching Song were about to be mounted by their jockeys on the grass on the far side of the parade ring prior to the first race when they fell to the ground and died, while Kid Cassidy and The Merry Giant were also affected.

Speculation from the connections of the stricken horses was that they may have suffered from some form of electric shock.

Stuart Hogarth, operations director for Southern Electric Power Distribution, said: "Following yesterday's unprecedented event, a full investigation is already under way.

"A section of electricity cable has been removed from the paddock area for further detailed inspection.

"Our initial on-site investigations last night confirm there was no danger to the public."

Stephen Higgins, joint managing director of Newbury racecourse, said: "We will wait for further information to be provided to us by Southern Electric Power Distribution who we are in daily contact with.

"We have been reassured that the site is safe and we hope that the final results of this investigation will be established as soon as possible.

"Once again, we extend all our condolences to the connections of those horses affected".

No further statement from Newbury is expected today.

Yesterday someone said that there were no cables in that area.

I imagine there'd be a case for compensation?

saul1664
14-02-2011, 02:32 AM
Latest was that the cable has been there for over 40 years, but some maintenance work may have shifted it and made it live, aligned to the fact that horses apparently are more susceptible to electricity than humans and of course conducted through their shoes.

Gooders

I imagine there'd be a case for compensation?

Must be.

Let's face it, if what Saul is saying turns out to be true then someone somewhere has done some pretty shoddy work - how the **** does anyone leave a cable in place just underground that has any chance whatsoever of ever becoming live again.

Loads of all-weather fancies today but I'm trying to keep my powder dry on the betting threads so I'll list them up here instead, just to see how I would have got on:

Lingfield

2.30 Frameit
3.30 Shared Moment
4.30 Crown Ridge
5.00 Ede's Dot Com

Kempton

5.40 Sunset Boulevard
6.40 Abigails Angel

Did you see that race yesterday where the jockey thought the race was a circuit shorter than it was? Can't find it on line but it was well funny, jockey went ballistic down the final straight, would have won by about 50 lengths..well not so funny if you had money on it I guess

Finbar
19-02-2011, 05:46 PM
Well it certainly didn't stay, was up with the pace for about a mile and a half and looked decent, price in running went into single figures but it faded badly finishing out of the places. Given Rock of Gibraltar was a miler (I think) then not surprising 2m is too far, mind you I'm by no means an expert on horses so one of the others might have something to add

DedBallSpeshlst

Nice one, thanks Fin.

Rajeeva wasn't a bad horse on the flat, just a non-winner - 9 starts for 7 placings and a fourth, mostly around the mile and a quarter. Would just like to see him chalk up a win to improve our sales page when we eventually retire ours. Venetia Williams sounds a reasonable trainer anyway.

As we know, I'm far from an expert on horsies but have been giving the form and stats a good going-over for tomorrow at Newb.

Ground should suit Sherwani Wolf if it's soft in the first.

Eric's Charm's the only one that's won over this trip but I like Cornish Sett in the 2.25

3.00 is really open. I plumped for Matuhi ahead of Ikorodu Road but Niche Market could be worth a shot. Nicholls has 4 of the last 5 of this race and Ruby on board.

Made in Time stands out in the 3.35 but Sire Collonges was tempting me.

Ability Girl 3:40 ridden by Jack Mitchell local lad for me at Epsom him and his younger brother(Freddie) really highly rated and although he is a long price he will be backed tomorrow and its best for an each way

otherwise

Grey Boy 2:40 recently backed him a good horse who has won over distance recently, his trainer Andy Carroll is a good trainer and the jockey George Downing doesnt often ride on the all weather unless there is something about the horse.

My mate is currently £600 up after two days, backing 7 winners. He even threw away one ticket that had £5 E/W on Carlito Brigante at 20/1. He had a shock when I told him it won!

Here are his selections for today if anyone is interested.

1:30 I like Noble Prince and Loosen my Load.

2:05 Kayf Aramis & Duke of Lucca (tentative selections at 20-1).

2:40 Kalahari King

3:20 Big Bucks (think everything looks right for him).

4:00 Hollo Ladies & Beautiful Sound

4:40 Mostly Bob, Galaxy Rock, Pomme Tiepy (all big priced, tentative)

Totally psyched for the Dubai show tomorrow. It's been a while for me and horse racing, ever since the dirty bastards in DC made it hard for me to bet anymore. Gonna check out the numbers, I gotta think that Gio Ponti wasn't sent over a second year just to make up the numbers. The results for Buena Vista are crazy, 17 starts returning $12 million. Never out of the money is pretty impressive for a filly. I'll swerve on Twice Over since I hate betting on the favorite.

I am looking forward to this as well.

Me too. I love the racing at Meydan and will miss it when it's over.

My thoughts:

I was at the airport in Dublin on Thursday evening and overheard a guy saying "yeah, just got back - we've got one running in the sprint over in Dubai and you should back him each-way as we think he has a decent chance".

Obviously I hung around to see if he would mention the horses name and he did - Sole Power. This is the horse that won the Nunthorpe at 100/1, beating Star Spangled Banner in the process. I had to stick him in a Lucky15 after that. I took 12/1, as I could see that he was being backed with the Irish bookmakers.

I initially fancied Rileyskeepingfaith in the Godolphin Mile but after watching re-runs of recent races over there I changed my mind to Skysurfers. I think he has a huge chance.

I've also backed Raihana at 20/1 in the Dubai Duty Free. Soumillon gave the horse a poor ride in its last race - he left it far too late to get busy and just failed to catch Derbaas - I don't think he'll make the same mistake again and he shouldn't be more than about 10/1, IMHO.

I've had savers on Mahbooba, Presvis, Rewilding and Twice Over, just in case the favourites have a good day.

Over at Lingfield, I'm on Dansili Dancer at 6/1 for the Winter Derby.

It's not that I rate him highly necessarily but I've noticed that he often rides multiple winners at a meeting - I think there's more chance of him doing it in Ireland than any of the top jocks doing it over here because he gets so many good rides. Today he was mostly riding for John Oxx and I thought he had some good chances.

The plodder Calculating runs yet again at Southwell this afternoon. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.

I was sorely tempted, however, to put him up in the March Betting Masters. He lost by a very comfortable three and a half lengths to Mush Mir (the likely favourite) recently but with his inexperienced rider's claim, is a whopping 16lbs better off today.

He'll undoubtedly finish 2nd again (or worse) but 14/1 is a big price.

I also have a sneaky feeling about Hannon's Looksmart in the 3.10 at Lingfield at double-figure odds.

Yeah - although the race write up said that he was hampered and couldn't get into it after that.

2 blank days in a row for me - hopefully I'll get some back today.

Hedging on two doubles:

Deauville Post - Lingfield 16:30
Fremen / Royal Dignitary - Catterick 15:50
Sinadinou - Catterick 16:20

No doubt Slikback Jack will win the 15:50 and screw me over.

A decidedly lo-fi start to the proper flat racing season today!

Gone with a few each-way fancies:

April Fool 2.50 Catterick*
Emirate Isle 4.50 Catterick
Jonny Ebeneezer 2.00 Lingfield*
Raimond Ridge 3.00 Lingfield
Louphole 4.00 Lingfield*
Grudge 5.30 Wolverhampton*

Those are the ones I've stuck in an each-way Lucky15 - a bet that I never ever seem to do well with.

A week to the Grand National meeting and just over a week to the Grand National itsellf so I have been looking at the ante post prices and a lot of the value has gone but the horses that I can see coming down in price are

Quinz, a good young horse that won the Racing Post chase as the race gets closer the price should reduce

Don't push it - I can't seen this winning this year, but as it will have AP McCoy on board, the price will fall on the day and there will be a chance to lay to make a profit. No horse has won this race 2 years in succession since the Great Red Rum.

What a Friend - Best price at the moment is 12s, but the Fergie (owns the horse) factor will almost certainly result in a single figure price on the day.

I will have some more thoughts in the week ahead

R Hughes at 8/1 with Coral seems good to me.

W Buick is 66/1 and I fancy him to do very well this season

Lilli Palmer 8.45 Wolverhampton

What do people fancy for the Lincoln?

I'm going for Docofthebay. Also leaning towards Prime Exhibit too.

A bunch of seasoned handicappers that take it in turns to beat each other. I don't know why we bet on it really!

Sometimes there's a horse that is possibly a Listed or Group class horse masquerading as a handicapper and this year punters have obviously decided that it is Taqleed. There's no value in backing that one, for me.

I'd be looking for a solid each-way option. Given that Hanagan has chosen Irish Heartbeat and that he won the Spring Mile (the race for horses that didn't make it into the Lincoln) first time out last year, I'll plump for him.

Prime Exhibit should go well too and I wouldn't put anyone off Docofthebay each-way either.

I'm looking at a result from an earlier race, what is the difference between a straight forecast and an exacta over there. What you call a straight forecast, we call an exacta, but I see a return given for an exacta there that is different than the return on the straight forecast.

Gooders
01-04-2011, 06:37 PM
I always assumed they were the same thing by a different name, Funk.

Can only guess that bets on an "exacta" over here go into a different pool than "forecasts".

Thank gawd for War Of The Roses. :)

Here's Race 1 at Wolves:
Tote Win: £31.00 Tote Place: £5.40,£1.10,£1.40
Straight Forecast: £45.27 Tricast: £184.57 Exacta: £74.30
Swingers:1&2:£8.60, 2&3:£2.20, 1&3:£13.70

And Race 5:
Tote Win: £13.70 Tote Place: £3.40,£2.70,£1.10
Straight Forecast: £90.24 Tricast: £209.15 Exacta: £70.80
Swingers:1&2:£9.60, 2&3:£3.50, 1&3:£7.30

I won't even ask what Swingers are. Just was something else my poor brain has to think about.

I always thought that the exacta was worked out based on a tote pool whereas the forecast was based (roughly) on the odds of the first and second of the race multiplied.
