I wouldn't take any notice of mine - I'm out of form at the moment.

I've done:

Caranbola 3.00 Beverley
Sagramor 3.40 Warwick
Aquarian Spirit 4.00 Beverley
Shamardal Phantom 4.20 Yarmouth

Plus a little dab at Lastkingofscotland 3.20 Yarmouth

Of course what I should have done is put up the horses I decided not to back - the first of which, Barkston Abbey, has just won at 4/1.

FWIW, the others were:

Fancy that Sud Pacifique in the last aswell, or Hanagan on Mica Mika with better draw. Other than that at York- Iceblast in 2.00, either of Mark Johnson's in the 3.35. Prob no bet on the other races at York as fields too big/seem too difficult to pick a winner.

Changed my mind on Markab - the Group1 penalty will probably find him out - Regal Parade has to be the value bet.

The 4.10 looks evil - originally selected Alejandro but I think Hamza and Gatepost are possibly both nice horses - the correct thing to do in that race is just watch, I think.

Yeah. Quite a few of the bookies do triple odds for one winner in "Lucky" bets. It's the only thing that is enabling me to draw at the moment - like last night, my only winner at Kempton was Point North at 2/1 but I took 10/3 and I get triple that, so a return of 10/1.

Today I fancy:

York

2.00 Midday
3.00 St Moritz/Justonefortheroad/Pintura (haven't decided yet!)
3.35 Night Carnation

Can't decide between the promise of World Domination or the form in the book of Seville so I'll watch the 2.30 rather than betting on it, I think

Salisbury

3.45 Native Picture
4.55 George Baker

Newmarket

8.30 Onyx Of Arabia

Gooders

In my ever- present search for value, I've gone off backing the short-priced ones (especially as they are not gimme's, by any means).

And one of mine is a non-runner as well.

So I settled on:

3.00 York - Justonefortheroad
3.45 Salisbury - Native Picture
4.45 York - Warne's Way
4.55 Salisbury - George Baker

My selections:

13:30 - Courageous @ 14/1 - Hoping this can get in front and stay on with the good draw, a nice smash and grab to start the day off.
14:00 - Midday, interested to see how Sajjhaa runs though.
14:30 - Really like the top three here so might just leave it like Gooders, I'd go for Seville though if pushed as it has the only form. Carlton House’s form has come in two races where there has been cut in the ground and it's good today so he won't get that. As for World Domination, no one-raced horse has won this race in 30 years so you are relying on it's prospects - if either of them win they will show they have class to boot.
15:00 - St Moritz @ 8/1 and Light From Mars @ 10/1 are my selections as I can't choose between the two. St Moritz has the better draw but I really like Light From Mars despite its bad draw. As for value Mass Rally @ 25/1 could easily run a big race with it's good draw, worth another e/w punt.

I lose interest from here onwards but my other selections are:

15:35 - Night Carnation
16:10 - Giorgios Dragon, keen to see how this starts off.
16:45 - Simonside, won over course and distance is enough for me @ 14/1.

Really hard to analyse, this race.

I was originally going to go with St Moritz because on a line through Eton Forever he should beat Justonefortheroad.

On the other hand, on a line through Balcarce Nov the Fahey horse looks like it would come out on top.

Given that Justonefortheroad raced on the "wrong" side of the course when beaten by Eton Forever, I plumped for him in the end. He has the beating of Pintura on that bit of form as well.

Exactly the same!!!!!!!!

I know they've all been coming down the stands side but I really don't understand what goes through a jockey's mind when he comes across and sits there behind a wall of slowing horses.

There's no way he was going to get a split early enough - should have stayed up the centre to get a clear run. I think he would have won, judging by the way he picked up once he got in the clear.

I was slightly put off by the wide draw mark but amount of races I've seen jockeys manage to pull the horses across to the opposite side from their draw in the run in to try and create a run and get high up in the running means I don't get too put off. Ironically I thought St Moritz would run well given it was drawn 3rd so what do I know...

Gooders
12-05-2011, 02:23 PM
I understand how the draw affects things at places like Chester but at a course like York there's surely plenty of time for the jockey to make sure he gets a good position? I like Hanagan, but he rode an ill-judged race there.

Oh well, never mind. Onwards and downwards!

Just watched a re-run of the 3.00.

I've perhaps been setting too much store by the post race write-ups on the Sporting Life web-site. Of Justonefortheroad, it says "towards rear, ridden 2f out, kept on final furlong, never nearer".

Doesn't mention the fact that it was snatched up 4f out, or that it was repeatedly denied a run until only just over 1 furlong out, when it started sluicing through the field - finishing only about 2 lengths down at the line.

Will definitely look out for it next time it runs.

Tomorrow in the 14:10 at Newbury a horse called Stella Point is running. It's currently 6/1 which is great value for a horse that according to Mick Channon is a much harder worker than it's stablemate Zain Al Boldan who destroyed the Lingfield Oaks Trial. Tomorrow in the 14:10 at Newbury a horse called Stella Point is running. It's currently 6/1 which is great value for a horse that according to Mick Channon is a much harder worker than it's stablemate Zain Al Boldan who destroyed the Lingfield Oaks Trial. Holds big entries for Epsom and Ascot. Get on it now.

In Jam we trust.

That looks a tough race. And I saw this on the Sporting Life website preview...

"Stella Point made a promising debut in the first division of a maiden over C&D last month, but the second division was won in a faster time by DANCING RAIN and she gets a tentative vote in race that should provide some good pointers for the future."

Good luck with it though. :p

Gooders
13-05-2011, 09:37 AM
Times are only one factor, of course. Although Flambeau did beat the horse we said it would beat - it's just that another came along that was better than both of them.

Anyway, today...

I still like Sweet Cecily dropping back to 6f and 9/1 is a decent price.

Really like Native Ruler at 4/1 in the Yorkshire Cup.

I've ruled out Mr Optimistic in the 3.35 as he can't possibly beat Manoori unless the latter needs the race - think Jamaican Bolt might be the one though, at 7/1.

Possibilities for my 4th selection are Census in the 3.20 at Newbury but 5/2 is not much of a price: Mataaleb in the 2.00 at York at 16/1 (I think Kansai Spirit needs further): Ittirad at 10/3 in the 4.45 although anything could be an improver in that race: or something from the 4.10 which will probably turn out to be either Horseradish or Docofthebay.

Good luck guys. :p

JamTheEagle

Not sure if people remember the greyhound Jazz Hurricane I tipped for the Essex Vase a couple of years ago that a few of us had success on?

Well her son Jazz Apollo is running in the heats for the Greyhound Derby on Saturday. It runs in Heat 1 at Wimbledon at 22.00.

The owners fancy him to do quite well but unfortunately it has landed a pretty tough heat 1.

Seems best price for the heat is 15/2 on Stan James where he is only 5th fancy out of 6. Not sure if it is top 2 or 3 that go through.

He is best price 150/1 to win the whole thing at BetFred, VC and SJ.

Only seems to be Betfair running odds to reach the final but he is listed at 31/1 on that.

Just thought I would share it with you. I'm on him e/w for Heat 1 and e/w overall, both small.

I have never put a suggestion for a bet on the site (and probably won't again when this loses) but a friend of mine, who spends hours studying form, has said there is a horse running in the 6.00 at Aintree which may stand a fair chance.

It's called Victor Daly. Apparently it won the race last year after not racing from the previous July. This race last year was the first time it ran in 2010. The year before it won it's first race in 2009 (March). In 2008 it won it's 2 races in April and May. The Sporting Life has said that it has not had a recent run but this seems to have been true for the last 2 years.

Anyhow this is what he emailed to me so just passing it on.

BREAKING NEWS

I got a profit today!!

After losing a fiver on Stella Point (thanks Jam) it all looked a bit hairy til I picked pitiful stakes on Dubai Dynamo and Foreign Rhythm to place at 2.7 and 3.3 respectively. DD kindly finished 2nd and FR won so I made a whopping £2.04 profit over the day. Sad as it sounds I'm actually pretty chuffed.

On another note though a mate whose been taking tips off me all week is now up over £400 thanks to my selections. Ones that I couldn't put on because I was at work and didn't get a chance (hence why i've only been doing eve races). So he duly phoned me today to gloat about Hoof It and Horseradish after I told him to back em. FML.

Glasgow man scoops £350,000 from £1 bet

A man who won more than £350,000 after placing a 50p each-way bet has been described by bookie William Hill as their "luckiest ever punter."

The single father from Glasgow, who wishes to remain anonymous, hit the jackpot with a seven-horse accumulator.

The man, who has not worked for five years after heart surgery, said he was shocked and said his brain was "a wreck".

He intends to buy his own home and visit his sisters abroad.

He said: "I'm shocked. I regularly place these little bets and everyone tells me I'm mad.

"I've hit the bar a few times but this is incredible.

"My brain was a wreck and I couldn't understand the balance on my account. I first thought it would pay about £21,000 and had to get my son to come and translate that the numbers meant I'd actually won £353,000."

The lucky winner placed his 50p each-way accumulator on seven horses running at Brighton, Nottingham, Towcester and Kempton.

A spokesman for William Hill said: "He's our luckiest ever punter."

Some cracking races tomorrow - including a fair few of those big field sprint races. Will keep my powder dry until then, I think.

Here we go again:

Jockeys Paul Doe, Greg Fairley, Kirsty Milczarek and Jimmy Quinn along with former rider Paul Fitzsimons have all been charged with serious breaches of the rules of racing.

It is alleged they conspired to commit a corrupt or fraudulent practice following a British Horseracing Authority investigation into suspicious betting activity on a number of races.

Fitzsimons is no longer a jockey but is now a licensed trainer.

Registered owners Maurice Sines and James Crickmore have also been charged with the same breach of the rules, along with six others - Peter Gold, Nick Gold, Shaun Harris, David Kendrick, Darren May and Liam Vasey.

All of the individuals except the jockeys are alternatively/additionally charged with another breach in that it is alleged 'they caused the jockey in the race to act by communicating to him directly or indirectly, at his request and for material reward, gift, favour or benefit in kind, Inside Information in relation to the named horse'.

Each of the jockeys is additionally charged with a different breach in that it is alleged 'they communicated directly or indirectly to one or more betting exchange account holders, for material reward, gift, favour or benefit in kind, information relating to the prospects of the named horse'.

The allegations focus on horses being laid to lose on betting exchanges in 10 races that took place between January 17, 2009 and August 15, 2009.

As well as being charged for allegedly passing on information for reward, each of the jockeys has also been charged with 'intentionally failing to ensure that their horse was run on its merits'.

Paul Doe has been charged in relation to a total of five races combining both charges. The races took place at Lingfield, Wolverhampton, Kempton and Bath.

Greg Fairley has been charged in relation to four races, Jimmy Quinn with two and Milczarek and Fitzsimons to one race each.

An independent disciplinary panel hearing has been set for October 20 and is scheduled to last 10 days.

The guideline penalty for any jockey found guilty of 'deliberately not riding a horse to obtain the best possible placing for personal reward or knowing it has been laid to lose' is five to 25 years disqualification, with an entry point of eight years.

'Corrupt or Fraudulent Practice' has an entry point of three years, 'causing a licensed person to breach the betting/inside information rules' is six months and 'passing information for reward' is three years.

An owner laying a horse he owns to lose has an entry point of 18 months.

Chris Brand, acting chief executive of the BHA, said: "Protecting the integrity of racing is a key priority for the Authority.

"In recent years we have invested heavily into a wide ranging infrastructure of investigatory services designed to monitor and combat integrity threats to our sport.

"British racing is rightly recognised worldwide for its expertise in this area and the high standards we set for both ourselves and those participating.

"Racegoers and punters should be reassured that the overwhelming majority of races are free of suspicion and we are committed to deterring and detecting wrong-doing and taking action when we believe there is evidence of it.

"We will continue to look to the support of Government and other agencies in ensuring an effective regulatory regime and the provision of dedicated resources to assist in this area.

"Recent events demonstrate this is a growing concern many sports share.

"The charges issued by the Authority today are the result of a lengthy, detailed and complex investigation, following suspicious betting activity on more than one betting exchange and with traditional bookmakers.

"It is of course of utmost importance that those charged are given a fair hearing and the opportunity to defend themselves and we will therefore make no further comment on the details of this case at this stage."

A Professional Jockeys Association statement added: "The PJA said they were aware of the on-going BHA investigations relating to these jockeys but were only informed recently that charges were imminent.

"The PJA has now recommended that the jockeys in question seek legal representation. The PJA stressed that on any issues concerning integrity, which is vital to the sport of horse racing, it will continue to support the BHA in carrying out that function.

"Until this case is concluded, the PJA, as the trade body for jockeys, will continue to offer advice and support to the jockeys should they seek it."

Fitzsimons was "shocked" at the charges, but is "pretty confident" his name will be cleared.

"I'm happy to help with the investigations for as long as it takes," said the Hungerford-based trainer.

"I went for an interview (with the BHA security department) 16 months ago and heard nothing back from them.

"I'm shocked and dismayed but I've got 100% backing from my owners, and will be represented by solicitor Andrew Chalk.

"I'm pretty confident my name will be cleared."

Chalk, of Withy King solicitors, will also be representing Quinn. He said: "Jimmy is sending in the paperwork as the charges have only just arrived, so we will look closer at the situation at the beginning of next week.

"We know the races involved, but have not yet seen any details or charges from BHA.

"Jimmy is pulling his hair out and is particularly frustrated.

"He feels he has co-operated fully with the investigation, having answered all of the appropriate questions with honesty.

"He is dismayed at the charges, and is adamant he has done nothing wrong.

"He will be doing everything in his power to clear his name."

Milczarek's charges relate to her ride aboard Obe Gold at Lingfield on August 15, 2009.

Trained at the time by Debbie Mountain, Milczarek finished fifth on the even-money favourite in a six-furlong seller.

One of the races over which Fairley has been charged relates to Obe Gold's performance when he finished third in a claimer at Catterick 24 hours earlier.

Milczarek's representative, Christopher Stewart-Moore, said Milczarek was "stunned", and claimed the rider suffered injuries when Obe Gold left the starting stalls at Lingfield.

Stewart-Moore said in a statement issued to Press Association Sport: "Kirsty Milczarek has been informed today that she has been charged with breaches of the Rules of Racing relating to one ride on a horse at Lingfield back in August of 2009 called Obe Gold.

"She is stunned by this development. She has been fully co-operative with the BHA investigations.

"There was no stewards' inquiry into her ride on the day.

"Raceform (race-readers) comment on the race concerning Obe Gold's performance was: 'For the second time in 24 hours (Obe Gold) got his departure from the stalls all wrong, this time breaking awkwardly and unbalancing Kirsty Milczarek for several strides.'

"Raceform went on to say: 'Although he recovered gradually, a shortage of room inside the final furlong sealed his fate.'

"The horse had done the same thing in its previous race and in its subsequent race, as is recorded by Raceform.

"This is all borne out by the video up to the race.

"On this occasion his antics on exiting from the stalls caused Kirsty to hit the upright of the starting stall, causing her a very painful injury evidenced by bruising across her chest which was observed by both the racecourse doctor on the day and the physio at Newbury the next day.

"She was in such pain that she was observed to be in tears after the race by another jockey.

"Her shoulder was strapped up by the physio to enable her to ride at Newbury the next day.

"She knows absolutely nothing about any laying of this horse other than what she has been told by BHA investigators and of the eight non-licensed people, she knows only two of them as nodding acquaintances and has never spoken to them privately.

"She has provided the BHA with all her telephone records and there are no telephone calls between her and any of the named layers.

"In short there is no evidence to support the BHA's charge for the very simple reason that she has done nothing wrong.

"As yet the BHA have provided none of the evidence in support of their charges against her but have nevertheless made a press release announcing the fact of the charge and given a hearing date for October of this year.

"Kirsty has decided to make this press release so as to reassure all the owners and trainers for whom she rides that she will continue to ride every horse she is employed to ride to win."

I think it'll get turned over by whichever of our seasoned sprinters decides it's his day today.

Heart ruling head, but I'm hoping it will be good old Borderlescott.

I can't get over the fact that Tangerine Trees was running in extremely low-grade handicaps a couple of seasons ago. He's come on leaps and bounds, obviously - but you could have thrown a hankerchief over the first 6 home in his last race and he would have got beat in one or two more strides - one of the others will surely go past him today.

Decent each-way bet though.

Have to admit to being a bit of an old softy when it comes to backing horses. I like the thought of an underdog (horse?) who didn't cost much coming good. I also like horses that win a lot. Years ago I really enjoyed backing Provideo and Timeless Times.

Spindrifter, Ardross, Admiral Grenville, Primo Domini, Janus - loads of old favourites there I used to follow.

Borderlescott is my current favourite. Tough as old boots. :p

I think it is easier to step up in sprints than say over 1m or further - you couldnt see a low grade handicapper at 1m 4f progreessing and winning a Group Race

True, but did he get found out today now that the established horses were a bit fitter? I think so.

Thought the old boy was going to win 100 yards out but no disgrace in 4th - didn't help that one of the other jockeys threw a blanket at his head in the early stages - I wondered why Callan stopped riding for a bit. :grrr:
