in any race or just the national?
I think it might just be the national but not sure.
Grand National Day - Technical Issues
Dear Sam,
Having offered 5 Places on the Grand National, we experienced the busiest day in our history with unprecedented numbers of customers placing their National bet with Paddy Power. Unfortunately, in the run up to the race, we experienced some technical issues which meant that many of our customers were unable to access our site.
We pride ourselves on providing excellent service and a stable website, and we apologise if we have disappointed you. After a very busy Cheltenham we were very confident that we were well prepared to handle Grand National Saturday, which is always the busiest day of the year for us. While most of our customers were able to get their bet on the race some were unsuccessful and this is not the level of service that we strive to deliver.
To demonstrate our commitment to providing this service, we are giving you a free bet, valid until the end of April. Log into your account at www.paddypower.com to use it.
I hope this goes some way to show you how sorry we are, and our desire to give you the service you deserve.
Kind regards
Paddy Power

Used to work in a credit bookies head office, and one of the blokes there would categorically state that backing the last race favourite at Windsor (though it had to be a night meeting) was profitable and could never be swayed from that opinion. Said it was a well known fact lol

Yeah, think the last race traditionally used to be a maiden, which tended to get a lot of decent horses by cecil, stoute etc. Now they just seem to be dodgy handicaps.

16-04-2012, 12:58 PM
I think the last 3 races there today will all be won by outsiders.
I've had a small interest in Solemn in the 5.00 and Nichloas Pocock in the 5.15 at Wolverhampton, in addtion to those named above.
The flat season has started has it? The only flat meeting tomorrow is an appalling card at Southwell.
At least there are some decent races at Newmarket later in the week, although finding winners there is always hard for me.

But a horse often gets a better rating (be in speed, whatever) when dropped into a lower grade, for many reasons, such as not being put under pressure that early, or able to dictate the pace of the race. Has got to have a significant impact.

no, but listen to any radio/tv racing show and none of them talk about the class of race, but will talk about the ratings of the horses now and in the past
i just wrote out a very long post about that race transonic was in today and the fact it was a claimer and you need to look at the weights the horses are running off rather than the class of race but deleted it

But a horse often gets a better rating (be in speed, whatever) when dropped into a lower grade, for many reasons, such as not being put under pressure that early, or able to dictate the pace of the race. Has got to have a significant impact.
so what if a horse is dropped into a claimer but is actually up against horses rated higher than it has been racing against as the other horses have been 'dropped' into it too....?!

Too long to write out again but essentially it was about the weights they running off in the race compared to their actual 'rating'
ie tronsonic rated 79 running off 9 stone 1, Doctor Zhivago rated 73 running off 9 stone 3 today etc, plus looking back at their recent ratings, The race winner jack dawkins rated 90 a year ago etc
LLCOOLSTEVE
17-04-2012, 04:53 PM
I guess we all have our own ways of studying the form but the class of the race is something i never look at personally.
saul1664
17-04-2012, 05:05 PM
So you don't think that a slow time in a Group 1 is better than a faster time in a weak handicap for instance. This isn't a criticism, just interested.
LLCOOLSTEVE
17-04-2012, 05:12 PM
No I dont look at times either, i find that pointless too.
A 60 rated horse can run a race 1 second slower say over 6 furlongs than a 90 rated horse one race to the next but put them in the same race and it will be different, cause of the rating.
LLCOOLSTEVE
17-04-2012, 05:13 PM
Also without them racing against each other you dont know if the 90 rated horse would be on the bridle, the 60 rated horse shoved along from the outset etc.
LLCOOLSTEVE
17-04-2012, 05:14 PM
There are timings i do take notice of, for example track records or sectionals.

Seriously though - you can't really ignore any factor is trying to find winners can you? You ignore times and class of race Steve but do you find any more winners than the rest of us?
No, you don't.
We all make our educated guesses and sometimes we're right but more often we're wrong - if we weren't we would be relaxing on a yacht somewhere instead of posting on here.
My biggest failng is my incessant search for value - if I ignored the forecast SP's when making my selections I'd pick a few more winners but I just love a good price. :)
Tomorrow at Newmarket is a case in point. Some cracking races but way too many factors to consider, not the least of which is which horses are going to improve substantially from 2 to 3 and which ones have trained on?
None of us has a scooby, let's face it. Won't stop me trying though! :D

Maybe not but id say you should choose the rating of horses to look at far more than the class of the race.
Would you pick a horse that has been tailed off beaten 30 lengths its last 3 outings just cause it is dropped from a class 5 to a class 6, even though its rating isnt changed?!

I'm always at work. That's why I have to get my bets on at lunchtime, which means I miss out on all the "market move" stuff - bit of a pain sometimes - especially when one drifts like the proverbial barge and promptly finishes tailed off.

Not a guineas horse after all, it seems:
Valbchek held off the late challenge of Swiss Spirit to win the Tattersalls Millions 3YO Sprint at Newmarket on day one of the Craven Meeting.
Jeremy Noseda's Acclamation colt was sent off the 100-30 favourite on the back of an impressive win in a maiden and he made it two from two here under a strong Ryan Moore drive.
The well-fancied Samitar had tried to run the finish out of them from the front but she was swamped in the closing stages, with Valbchek prevailing by half-a-length from Swiss Spirit (10-1) at the line.
Tidentime was third at 33-1.
Noseda said: "We ran him at Lingfield to get a run into him over six furlongs with a view to coming here and it's nice when a little plan comes to fruition.
"He's a nice horse and it's a good performance to win a race like this with so little experience.
"He could go for the Carnarvon Stakes at Newbury at the Lockinge meeting. I had it at the back of my mind he might be a Jersey horse but Ryan says six furlongs is his trip for now but he could get a bit furtrher in time."
