:p Just, really fancied Logsdail hence the bet. Not my normal level of stakes tbh, just had such a good fortnight or so i up'ed it whilst in form.

However seem to have gone badly out of form at the last couple of days, one winner out of every 7 or 8 bets isn't good enough. Will ease of now till i go to Lingers on sat unless i get some strong info, and then reduce stakes to normal levels whilst i stil have a sizable profit.

Lost 4 races on a neck (either lay or back and on 2 occasions both ways) But for those few inches it could have been so much different but that's the way these things go.

An awful awful bet Gooders for 2 reasons.

1) The horse doesn't react well on really fast ground

2) For that reason they have pulle dit out of the race! ;)

It's not "really fast ground" - it's "Good to Firm (Firm in places)".

I spoke to the manager of the shop at length about this.

Gooders: "I see that the trainer has stated that this will only run if there's sufficient rain - is it raining in Leicester because it's 12.30 and it hasn't been announced as a non-runner?"

Manager: "Dunno"

Gooders: "Ok, thanks".

:grrr:

Oh well, a winner without a price assuming one of the others does the business but there won't be much of a return now. I was originally going to pick Saxon Lil - that'll probably go and win it now.

Imperial Star will win the 4.50 but his odds reflect this (the godolphin one hasn't been working very well at home i'm told). Noble Nova (3.55) again should win (GG tipped this one up before i think), not sure if any value in price though. Five aside in the 6.15 i've had a word for, gonna wait to see if it's backed though as its not a strong word. One worth an e/w bet is rocket force in the 8.05, needs to prove he can handle the AW but could be a value bet again the presscot horse. Also had whispers on argentine in 2.40 and brenin gwalia in 2.20.

Not sure how wise it is to pursue her though, at the end of the day she is used to a strong muscular beast between her legs, i can only disappoint following that :D :(

I'll have to hedge against Louphole now.

I had a 22/1 double coming if Louphole won so I picked 3 other horses as hedges at small stakes. Louphole won and the other three I picked finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th!

That's how my troubles strated. Years ago me and some friends snuck into the course. We were only 14 and 15 at the time. We got the oldest loking one to put the bets on. I picked 5 out of 6 winners. Within a year I was a hooked gambler, obsessive to the point of taking days off work because I had blown my money on the nags or to go to Sandown or Lingfield. I thought nothing of betting two days wages each way on a horse and once won a months money on one bet at Lingfield. I was only 16 and had to sweat out a stewards enquirty and objection. it all seemed great when I had the money,up the pub, giving it large with my wad of notes, but the thing with gambling is, you never really win. certainly not in the long term. I had to leave them alone for years or I'd have been in deep shit.

Ian Hart

Al, one of my Grandfathers was by far the biggest bookmaker in Wales, in the days before betting shops. By the time I was 10 years old, I'd probably been taken to every race course in southern England, including many that no longer exist, like Lewes and Hurst Park. I could tell you stories that would make your hair stand on end!

It is possible to make a long-term profit. But not (and I'm not having a dig at anyone, or preaching to people) in the way that most people on this thread appear to go about it.

Al From Bromley
21-07-2006, 07:39 AM
Yes that's what I was hinting at Ian. Anyone who has a bet on every race or ties to go through the card will find themsevles playing catch up more often than not. Professinal gamblers pick their moments very carefully and certainly don't have a punt on claimers, sellers, and lowly rates stakes races. Just like Gonzo,. and at the same course too, I almost went through the card and thouight it was the shape of things to come. It wasn't. Some weeks I was broke by the Tuesday after the Friday pay day.

Couple of things put my off this one, the fact that frankie has chosen to ride the one at newmarket (although to be fair i'd rather have Kerrin on it but frankie would have had the choice of the two) and also that he meets kandidate on the same terms as before when kandidate beat him quite easy.

Except in the last 50 yards you wanted Quenched to win and i wanted her to finish second, would have won 4 times the amount on Cresta Gold.

Picked these out just for a bit of interest:

Our Sheila 3.50 Ayr

This evenings racing isn't much better either.

I did get involved in that massive gamble on Baboosh today and had a nice sum on that so the day hasn't been to bad.

Michael Tebbutt brought Baboosh with a well-timed run to land a monster gamble in the Weatherbys Bank Fillies' Handicap at Yarmouth.

The Marju mare travelled well throughout the contest before being produced inside the final furlong to score a tidy half-length success from Michael Bell's Fonic Rock.

The Michael Wigham-trained five-year-old was backed at all rates from 25-1 this morning before eventually being sent off the 4-1 favourite.

A delighted Wigham explained to At The Races: "She had lost her way a bit in the winter on the all-weather and had slipped down the handicap.

"Today was her first time on turf (for Wigham) and she had done some good work at home, so from what we had seen the game was on.

"Mr Hassan (owner) is at home with his wife who is having a baby at the moment so he couldn't come, but I think he got down to the local bookmakers and had a bit on."

Kate Miller, spokesperson for hard-hit bookmakers Blue Square, added: "The gamble on Baboosh certainly galvanised our traders on what would have ordinarily been a quiet Monday morning.

"The welter of money began as soon as we priced up this morning, and continued throughout the day.

"Our book took a £30,000 hit and it has not been a great start to the week."

(reopens) Ben Clarke of William Hill commented: "It was an old fashioned gamble that has cost us but it could have been a lot worse.

"Fortunately we missed some of the early money as the biggest price we went was 14-1 but it was still a very bad result and we would estimate that the industry is facing a £1 million payout on the race."

Paul O'Neill is set for a trip to Horseracing Regulatory Authority headquarters at Shaftesbury Avenue next week after television cameras showed him appearing to headbutt a horse at Stratford on Sunday.

Having reviewed a video of the incident involving the John O'Shea-trained City Affair, the disciplinary panel of the HRA have decided to hold an inquiry.

The conditional rider had been unshipped by the gelding after arriving at the start and went on to finish fourth in the Claydon Horse Exercisers Novices' Selling Hurdle.

"We haven't got a date set but we are going to go for some time next week - our inquiry day is usually on the Thursday," explained HRA spokesman Owen Byrne.

Just watched the video of the race on the Racing Post site. Onenightinlisbon won by a good 4L from the worst draw. Got away well and kept up a good pace. Should be more to come.

P.S. Racing Post now charge 10p for the finish or 20p (you can watch it three times over the next 24 hours for that) for the whole race. They have deposited £5 in my virtual wallet and if you deposit £10 they will match it. Well worth the money imo. :lux:

They should introduce a month subscription service to view the races, £10pm for unlimited access or something. It is a very good service but could get very expensive to make full use of it.

You have a point there, I normally only use it on Saturdays or when I'm off work. £10 would equate to 50 races which is OK for me, but, as you say if you use it all the time then it could get expensive.

Just out of interest how much is a Time Form book these days?

I thought that too but 50 races when broken down isn't that many, even for just one day. Assuming 8 horses in a race, you can in theory only watch the form of all the horse in 6 races, even then you'd only be able to look at one race per horse. I used to pick maybe 3 or 4 horses per race, and watch the last 2 or 3 races for each one. Thats when it will add up. Suddenly a mornings research has cost you the profits that you could make! Although the flip side is after all that research you should have really picked the winner, so the cost should be worth it :D

And no idea unfortunately.

Yeah you're right, I didn't take into account that you would like to look at more than one horse and then look at several runs for each of the horses to make your selection. If researching properly you would need to up your stakes in order to offset the cost of the research. I think I might use it sparingly. Shame really because it is a great service, perhaps they might do as you suggest and introduce a monthly fee if that many people don't subscribe.

Talking of lady jockeys, whatever happened to Lisa Jones?

Al From Bromley
26-07-2006, 06:15 PM
Here's what hapene3d to her

"Remember Lisa Jones? Three years ago, she was the next big thing but only until trainers and owners deserted her when she could no longer claim a weight allowance. Visibly dispirited last summer, she headed to Macau for a winter riding contract and is still there, unlikely to return.

Many other girl jockeys have had their brief sparkle extinguished by the realities of pragmatism and prejudice. Even Cathy Gannon, acclaimed as a star in the making in Ireland, has grown frustrated by lack of opportunities and is now trying her luck in Britain, with just one winner so far.

Hayley Turner continues to be the torch-bearer but, even for her, this has been a summer of struggle. Having shared the apprentice jockeys’ title and been voted Channel 4’s Racing Personality of the Year for 2005, Turner has generally been confined to riding outsiders and no-hopers.

Two doubles in a week gave her season a boost and her tally of 18 winners is admirable, given the quality of ammunition. “People might be waiting for me to fail but I really don’t think I will,” she told Diary. “If the rides were drying up, I’d be worried but I’ve had almost 400 this year. If you throw enough darts at the board, some will always stick.”

Don't think there is really any system to it tbh, both ride a lot for Hannon and both get there share of winners for him (plus hughes is his son in law i think so it would surprise me if Ryan always gets the better rides). Ryan is a far better jock then hughes though imo, hughes could find traffic problems if he made all on a horse, still not as bad as that •••• spencer.

Ryan is a far better jock then hughes though imo, hughes could find traffic problems if he made all on a horse, still not as bad as that •••• spencer.

I did some googling. Hughes is retained by one of Hannon's main owners (might be Khaled Abdulla). I would put money on young Ryan having ridden more winners for Hannon than Hughes this season, and also coming out best when he has two in a race (which is quite often).

In any event, rumours that Moore will be retained by Stoute next year.

He is retained by Abdulla. I'll have a look on the RP stats on the number of winners, always assumed that they would be much the same.

Good news if true.

This years stats:

RL Moore for R Hannon - 23 wins from 167. 14% strike rate
R Hughes for R Hannon - 35 wins from 204. 17% strike rate

Unfortunately cant look for when they both rode in the same race for Hannon however i'll be looking out for such races in future and checking out the trend. I tend to back Ryan over hughes anyway so hope you're right!

Who are everyones top 5 and bottom 5 jockeys?

My top 5 (flat)

1) Keiran Fallon
2) Ryan Moore
3) Seb Sanders
4) Phillip Robinson
5) Hayley Turner :)

Bottom 5 (flat)

1) Jamie 'Frank' Spencer
2) Richard Hills
3) Christophe Soumillon
4) Dean McKeown (he has cost me a few bob recently!)
5) Dane O'Neill (only cos he lost the other day) :D

The ones that seem to do well for me are:

Ryan Moore
Neil Callan
Jimmy Fortune
Tony Culhane
Seb Sanders

The ones that nearly always let me down are

Richard Hills
Michael Hills
Dane O'Neill
Daryll Holland
Richard Hughes

I have never backed a winner with Holland on board. Never.

2.05 Escayola
2.40 Royal Oath
3.15 Glistening
3.50 Star Cluster

Unfortunately, having just read the current bun templegate has also picked these :(

Aahgowangowan should win the 4.45 at thirsk, doubt it will be the 5/1 it says in the paper though.

Nothing else has jumped out at me today yet, will try and save my dough for tomorrow i think.

Laid the Godolphim horse to place, think both the other 2 are capable of winning it and possibly both finishing clear.

Got to wonder where the form has gone from a 2nd in the Oaks for Something Exciting - just teh time to rediscover it! :p

Nothing, cant see hurricane run getting beat but it wont see any of my money with soumillion on board. Likewise with hearts cry, i'm not a huge fan of lemaire either. Electrocutionist has a chance, wee bit short in price though. May take a chance, if i can get 100/1, on the pace maker getting an easy lead and stealing it, given the poor tactical knowledge of some of the jockeys behind. I am only talking £2.50 e/w though for a little bit of interest :D

Thirsk

2.00 Crow's Nest Lad
4.15 Robustian
4.45 Aahgowangowan
5.20 Paddywack

This was unlucky - 1st at 11/10, 2nd at 5/6, 1st at 6/4, 2nd at 4/1. Wouldn't have been a huge pick up but Paddywack would have boosted it up nicely.

Oh well.

I'll take the fiver off your hands! ;)

Taking Hearts Cry at 4/1, though may even go bigger.

Form against Electrocussionist (if you take Ouija Board as the marker) ha it well ahead.

Its won some very very big races before, all the talk of Hurricane Run i think has shortened its price well below true market value. Lost its last race in France at 2/9F, with Lemaire riding the winner (Pride) so he knows what it takes to beat it.
