Would be interesting to see where Pakistan would be if all the teams had played equal games [or do the ranking already take that into consideration?].

I think they do Klinx. This explains all :

I'm getting good at this. After 2 series wins in a row I guessed the threadstarter would be Klinx!! :p

Pakistan are definately a force at the moment and will get stronger over the next couple of years!

But not if their strike bowler has to cry himself to sleep every time someone points out he's chucking. ;)

Pakistan's test comes when they play over here.

Like England's test was when they played over there?

England had already won a big away series in South Africa, so the series against Pakistan was less of a marker than Pakistan's away series here will be.
I agree that we failed over in Pakistan but I think that the timing of it was ridiculous.

Actually I should correct myself a bit, I think that it was a different kind of test for England than South Africa, one which needs to be addressed if we are looking to be the no.1 team but due to the timing, we were in no real shape to make a proper go of it and came up against a good Pakistan side. We do however have the chance to rectify this in India.

England are still a spinner and a batsman away from being a quality side. I hope they are unearthed in the summer cos I want to go to Australia and retain the Ashes there.

It's a bit harsh on Giles, he isn't the best spinner around, but he does a very useful job for England. In Pakistan, he was clearly hampered by his hip injury.

Giles does a 'useful job' in places where he is required to do just that, ie ones where the seamers' strengths can be utilised. However, in conditions where spin is king, he is clearly lacking.

If Pakistan can repeat its home form on the road, then there is every chance it can challenge for the top; inconsistency is, however, its hallmark.
