View Full Version : BBC South East and Clowntown

I have just watched the 1 o'clock news on BBC South East and they carried an article on Charlton fans travelling to Middlesborough tonight. It is not the first time I have seen an article on Charlton on BBC South East, yet I don't recall seeing anything about Crystal Palace.
Palace are a London club as are Charlton, I would only expect to see them on BBC London - not on South East.

I have been prattling on about this for a few years, (I guess nobody else really cares). It's not just BBC South-east, it's Meridian as well - they always refer to "our three south-east clubs", that's Gillingham, Brighton and Charlton. :vader:
(didn't you see that investigation into BBC product placement ? Charlton is just the latest example. Mr Varney probably feels very smug about it).
Perhaps it has something to do with Michael Grade on their board - is he the Beeb Michael Grade ?

I guess it's because Charlton bus in a sizeable proportion of their fanbase from Kent and Sussex, whereas we mostly draw our support from the local area.

Partially correct, we do draw a sizeable support from outside the local area. However unlike Charlton we haven`t taken advantage of a large area which has only a couple of clubs.

I am sure there are more Man Utd fans in the South East than Charlton Fans, why not show them on BBC South East or Meridian?

Actually I think that is not the reason. I think it is because both Meridian and BBC South East are too lazy to send reporters to Palace or Millwall, arguable both of those clubs are near enough to Charlton which are covered and have enough supporters living in the South East TV region if they can be bothered to carry out their research.

or it could be that Charlton are an established Premiership Club.

So why do they cover Gillingham and Brighton??

I think Charlton have invited the reporters to cover them in the south east news magazine shows.
In my opinion (having lived in both) we have more fans than them in Kent and East Sussex.

Now there are more clowns about because, I think, they bus them in from all over the shop, they do cheap tickets, they are in the Prem and draw some glory hunters and finally that some of them may have moved out from Woolwich and the surrounding area to this neck of the woods.
The town I live in has lots of Palace fans though.

The local coverage always has overlap, but this doesn't explain why Palace aren't on BBC South East if Charlton are. If my memory serves me correctly for our tv regions it goes;
BBC London: all London clubs, Watford, Luton, Gillingham and Reading
BBC South East: Charlton, Gillingham, Brighton
BBC South: Brighton, Reading, Portsmouth, Southampton, Bournemouth

Can't remember whether Charlton are still affiliated with the Kent FA, could be a reason?

Maybe the BBC are trying to keep in touch with the Clown's fanbase which is not easy because they keep getting evicted and moved on

As I live to the east of Brighton slightly we also get BBC southeast.
When Gillingham got relegated I thought that we would be mentioned 2nd after Charlton, but no, we still get mentioned after Gillingham.
In Brighton the news is South Today so we come after Southampton (even though they're in the fizzy pop league) Pompey, Reading and then us.

How many more trimes do we need to discuss this?
BBC, ITV & Sky do not like CPFC...........just like the press.

About four years ago, the Club made a concerted effort to canvass the BBC by showing them the number of ST holders we have in Kent, particularly in the DA, TN and ME postcodes. The Club went out of the way to court the execs at BBC South East and continue to have an excellent relationship with them
It's obviously worked wonders as we get excellent coverage on BBC SE as well as BBC London. It also helps that we are considered to be the South East Premiership Club.
It just proves that, yet again, our CEO knows what he's doing.

At least he's got some balls, and doesn't pander to the media to gain coverage for a club that nobody cares about. Theres more CPFC fans than clowntown here, but no mention of Palace ever. It's just favouritism.

Two coaches left TW for 'Boro last wednesday. There's also a thriving Branch of the supporters Club in TW with over 100 members.
What do Palace do in TW Diggers?

Response from the BBC
James - thank you for your email. The reason BBC South East includes Charlton in its sports coverage is due to the large number of their supporters who live in our area. Almost 60% of season ticket holders come from Kent or East Sussex and the club busses in thousands of supporters from as far afield as Deal and Eastbourne for each home game. We certainly have nothing against Crystal Palace (or any other clubs) but its unlikely that sufficient numbers of supporters are able to watch our output.
Best of luck to Palace in the playoffs - see you at the Valley next season
Regards Neil Bell - BBC South East

That's due to the huge flooding of advertising offering season ticket's to people in these areas when you got promoted. If i remember correctly the pitch was more about watching man U, Liverpool Arsenal etc, rather than watching Charlton.

This response is quite frankly rubbish. If the BBC South East people were to do a demographic survey of their broadcast area they would be surprised of the number of Palace fans that live there, particularly to the west of their broadcast area. So the Charlton fans run coaches then, big Deal. As for Eastbourne there is no way they can say that there are significantly many more Charlton fans that live there than Palace fans.
I don't blame Charlton for taking advantage of their big love in with the media, I blame the media themselves.

We meet in the masonic hall, and plot ways to keep the conservative party in power in the town. And also which clowntown supporting household we're going to firebomb* next.

Coaches left for middlesborough from tunbridge wells. How much did that cost the club. You only get away support when your muppet chairman puts on free travel. I would know as me my mate whose a charlton fan thats the only reason they went, because of the free travel.

So typically Charlton : a long string of bad results, then a "Cup Final" to damage Pompey's survival hopes (perhaps they're planning to "bus in" from Portsmouth). Today, back to business as usual.
It will be interesting when Curbishley eventually goes, the whole team is built around picking which games to put some effort in to. They are the equivalent of the mediocre student who always manages to scrape through, by having excellent exam "technique" and having a tutor good at picking questions.
