View Full Version : Marcus Bent
I have just read that Man city are going to put a 3m bid in for Marcus Bent a player I always rated. What does anyone else think of him? No sign on fee for us either http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/frown.gif
heres the article
City look to a Bent deal
July 15, 2000
Premiership new boys Manchester City are being linked with Sheffield United star Marcus Bent.
City boss Joe Royle is reportedly putting together a £3million offer for the Blades and former England under-21 striker, who netted 16 goals for United last season.
Marcus Bent could become a member of the Royle family(Allsport)
Bent moved to Sheffield for £300,000 from Port Vale, having already scored eight goals for the Valiants.
Bent's goal scoring abilities have attracted attention from several premiership bosses.
Tottenham boss George Graham, Leicester's Peter Taylor and Charlton manager Alan Curbishley are all rumoured to be interested in the Hammersmith born target man.
Although Bent has stated he would like to stay at Bramall Lane, a £3million cash injection could be used by United boss Neil Warnock to strengthen his squad for the upcoming campaign.
And Warnock has already lined up former Republic of Ireland international David Kelly as a possible replacement for Bent, and the veteran striker could sign for United within the week.
City boss Royle is looking to strengthen his squad further for their eagerly anticipated Premiership return, Nigerian star Daniel Amokachi is expected to begin training with the Blues on Monday.

I always rated Bent, he played well against many of the top clubs in our Premiership season scoring a couple of cracking goals.
Out of all the players we have sold since Venables arrived he was one that I wish we had kept. He looked like a promising player for the future. After he left I kept an eye on him, it wasn't long until his name appeared on the scoresheet on a regular basis.
Unfortunately for Palace Venables replaced him with Rizzo, who badly lacked Bent's physical presence.

I think thats called hindsight and usually used by people who would like to say "I told you so?"

I still regret the day we sold him to you.

I don't know why people keep expressing surprise that there's no sell-on clause - we sold him to Port Vale and if there was any sell on fee involved, we'd have got it when he went from there to Sheffield United, not now.
Yes, Edmundo, it seems a strange piece of business for Brentford to have let him go quite so early - we didn't pay much for him either.

Typical wanky Venables move. The Saviour of English football?Yeah Right
I rated Bent as well. When he arrived I asked one of my Brentford supporting colleagues if he was any good and was told that he was, but his form was patchy. In fact I think he did well for us and scored some excellent goals, not least the one at the Reebok. At the first Goldberg meeting at Fairfield Halls, someone asked why Bent had been sold so cheaply when he was worth at least a million. Goldberg just scoffed at the thought that he might be worth so much.
You just have to love Goldberg don't you

The evil David W£bb was owner of Brentford then and was looking to sell anyone and everyone he could - in order to line his pockets. Ron Noades may be a lot of things, but stupid isn't one of them.

When we were relegated three seasons ago, the prospect of Bent & Jansen leading our attack in a succesful promotion season seemed likely.
Venables judgement in letting Bent go for peanuts, along with Edworthy, Herman et al, ruined all that.

Bent is a class player, with a lot of pace, and a good eye for goal. As for Venables, don't get me started....

Everyone says about the Goal at Bolton. One of my favourites was his goal at West Ham. He runs through and beautifully chips Lama from outside the area. Effing brilliant.

I always rated Marcus and was really gutted when he went as I thought he had terrific potential and was definitely a Palace type of player. Sadly that wasn't to be, but I wish him luck and success wherever he goes (unless he's playing against us that is!)

Spot on Spikemeister. I thought the Bent/Jansen partnership held huge promise. Venables had the opportunity for a rejuvenation of a young team led by a young, strong, pacy strike force. Instead he brought in his mates from Portsmouth.
