Cricket seems weird to me (I do like it as a sport though) The best teams have the best player. Those best players are always off playing for their Countries, therefore the best teams are now the worst teams.

Bit like if say Arsenal always had its players off on International duty, they would just be an average team. Very strange!

So with this logic, Surrey are actually a better team than Sussex because they are doing worse! :D

Sussex's success is very highly dependent on the excellent bowling of Mushtaq and Naved Ul Hasan. If they both went on tour with Pakistan, they'd be screwed, although I think Mushtaq may not play tests anymore, will have to check up on it.

"Double Trophy winners, Sussex, are taking to an open-top bus on Monday 25 September as they travel in style to a Civic Reception held by Brighton and Hove's Mayor.

They will have both the Championship and the C&G trophies with them as the bus leaves Hove Town Hall at 12.30pm whereupon the bus will make its way down Church Road, Western Road, towards Churchill Square then down North Street past the Old Steine to The Thistle Hotel. The players will then make their way to the Civic Reception.

So if you're in Brighton between 12.30pm and 1.15pm and see the Sussex bus and the victorious Sussex players then give us a wave and sing up strong for Susssex By The Sea!"

Just a little bit, what was that a 400+ run stand for the third wicket for Surrey's Ramprakash and Butcher?

Here are some match stats.

Surrey 1st Innings 626-3
Ramprakash 266 NOT OUT
Butcher 179
Mushtaq 1 for 178

Sussex 1st Innings 365 All Out
Nicholson 5-89

Oh dear Sussex had to bat again

Sussex 2nd Innings 35 for 2
Nicholson 2-12

At the end of day three

Will Sussex manage to bat out the whole day tomorrow, or will the weather conspire to upset Surrey.

Stay tuned Sussex supporters!

Ah, 'potential'!
I remember that from school.

You may well be potentially a bigger club. You may not be.
But potential and reality can be very different things.

Holding up a play-off final attendance against average league attendance is hardly a reasonable comparison.

However, the last time your lot made the play-offs in the old Nationwide Division One you averaged 12k.

I hate arguments about attendances, as they are ultimately meaningless to true fans, but your logic is failing to reach its potential.

I don't neccesarily accept that. When you consider the area where Palace play just on the edge of SE London bordering large parts of Surrey, Kent and dare I say it Sussex and the fact that there are 3 large towns (Croydon, Bromley and Sutton) within half an hour of Selhurst I think we have massive potential. Obviously this has never been realised but that's a different story.

the 1st point of my argument aj is the point about more of your fans in sussex than ours! that is not true and you know that! secondly, i firmly believe we have potential as of our catchment area. we have had big crowds before and they would come back if we had the right product. people will not pay money too watch div 1 football (if you could call it that ) at an athletics stadium with inadequate facillities.build the stadium and put a team on the pitch and i will prove you all wrong! up the albion!

But a lot of clubs USED to get big crowds Wigman including us, but times change and what happened in the past has no bearing what might happen in the future as you well know. Look best of luck with Falmer i genuinely hope you get the thumbs up soon, but it seems to me that a lot of Brighton fans think that when and if you get the new stadium you will automatically fill it and that is the end of it. I just can't see it happening fella, yes there will be the initial novelty factor where the floating footie fans in the area will go to see the new ground etc, but if Brighton are still plodding along in League 1 (and the lower reaches of League 1 at that) how long do you think the novelty will last? Oh and there are a hell of a lot of Palace fans in Sussex like it or not, facts are facts.

We need 12,000 to maintain it.

Which is exactly the right figure to aim for, because that was your average attendance the last time you reached the Nationwide Division One play-offs.

All clubs should build new stadiums with a capacity bigger than they need.
1 For Cup games against teams with a big away following.
2 To show ambition for the future.

In the 70's many clubs including Palace and Brighton had big crowds, and both have a massive catchment area. Palace have the south London/Surrey borders and Brighton the Sussex coast.
But both teams have the whole of the Weald and Downland, or rather they should have.

The trouble is that since the 70's the excessive marketing of the Big Four and the medias one-eyed concentration on them, particularly Manchester United, has made massive inroads into the support of ALL clubs.
Two generations have grown up hardly ever seeing their local team on TV, and if they do its a paltry 45 seconds worth of goals, red cards and injuries on a Sunday morning 'highlights' show.
The Big Four are on all the time.
Beckhams latest tatoo or hairdo has had more coverage than half of English football, and thats by so called sports broadcasters!

From Plymouth to Carlisle football clubs are fighting over the scraps the Premiership Greed League hasnt been able to keep for itself.
Yet.

Horror.

I've had enough of 'hating' other little clubs.

I was on a train yesterday with Blackpool and Yeovil fans. Wrong result, but what the hey, it was fun.

I hate rich bastard Prem League clubs.

I wish Brighton well.

Ouch - I think I'm still pissed.

Spot on Doc. I listened to the radio this morning, less than a full 30 seconds after interviewing both West Brom & Derby fans, they turned the conversation to the Premiership :bash: :bash:

I thought today was about them.

Bring back the 70's, Big Mal, Spider et al.

Exactly right Nige, and let's face it that statement 'big four' alone shows why money is king in football now because you and i remember when Chelsea were getting 6,000 for midweek home games and were a run of the mill club for donkey's years. Low and behold first Harding then the Russian spending insane amounts of money and low and behold they are one of Europe's elite! Chelsea to me are Micky Nutton, John Sitton and losing every year to Div 3 and 4 opposition in Cup Competitions!

I just can't see it happening fella, yes there will be the initial novelty factor where the floating footie fans in the area will go to see the new ground etc, but if Brighton are still plodding along in League 1 (and the lower reaches of League 1 at that) how long do you think the novelty will last? Oh and there are a hell of a lot of Palace fans in Sussex like it or not, facts are facts.
blimey aj it took you a long time too reply! i think you gave an honest reply and respect is due to you. if the stadium does get the green light, then your right that if we are in league 1 then the crowds will not be that big.but i was saying that we have the potential to fill the stadium if the product is there. there are a lot of your fans in sussex and i agree with that statement. if you live in crawley for example you are probably nearer too your place than ours;but to say there are more of your lot in sussex than ours , as one person was saying on this site; is absolutely absurd!

I paid 43 for my ticket to England / W Indies last Friday. We were very lucky indeed with the weather, but I'd rather have seen no cricket and had my money back than see a 60-ball farce and they keep the 43.
