View Full Version : BBS Betting Masters - World Cup '06 special

Germany 06 special.
We are for the most parts following the regular BM rules*, but with a few changes:
First of all group stages. Just like the World Cup weve got 32 participants and 8 groups. The best 2 from each group goes through to the next round. Only bets on the World Cup is allowed.
Each contestant gets picked (by random) one of the national teams competing in the World cup 2006. And then they have to do 5 bets related to there team (can bet against them and so on). Shouldnt be a problem finding bets as there will be 50+ bets possible to do on any one game in the World cup.
After the league stage the people with most points go through (top 2). They are then up against a person from another group so
(Example..)
Group D finishes
el mico (Angola)
jamesyg0 (Iran)
Funk Butter (Mexico)
Gooders (Portugal)
Real WC Group D finishes
Portugal
Mexico
Iran
Angola
Then in Round 2 El Mico takes Portugal and jamesyg0 takes Mexico.
and they play h2h against whoever it is Portugal and mexico play in Rd2 of the real WC.
Number of bets:
Group stages (32 participants): 09-23.June 20 bets (15+5) 48 games to bet on.
2. Stage (16): 24-27.June - 10 bets (8+2) 8 games
3. Stage (8): 30-01.July 10 bets (8+2) 4 games
4. Stage (4): 04-05.July 10 bets (8+2) 2 games
5. Stage (5): 08-09.July 10 bets (8+2) 2 games (final and bronze final..)
In addition to the regular bets, one can also do 2 long-term bets.
1. Who do you think will win the WC?
2. Top scorer?
Search for the best odds and put it up (name the bookie), I would recommend using www.oddschecker.com , for example you can get odds from 7.5 to 9.4 on England winning the tournament.
These bets will only come into play if you are one of the 2 finalists.
Bets have to be placed before the start of the tournament.
*The regular rules..
1. Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.
2. Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 14 days. Maximum bet on a single game is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis.
3. After the group stage the qualifiers all start on 0 points (same for each round).
4. Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission
5. Players must quote where they're getting their prices.
6. Singles and upwards accepted.
7. For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.
8. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2
9. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.
10. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.
11. When an event has started it is not allowed to edit one's own bets/posts.
12. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You cant shop around for the highest odds and put them together.
That was a lot of...if you got any questions (I know weve got a few new faces in the BM this time), then dont hesitate to ask, either on here or via pms.
Good luck to all!:p

Is there no regular horses etc. betting thingy this month then?
long term bets.
Winner - Italy @ 10-1 (totesport)
golden boot - Pauleta @ 34-1 (skybet)
gone for Pauleta as he banged in a hat-trick the other night in a friendly, needs to prove the doubters wrong after a poor Euro 2004, is the top scorer in both world cup qualifying and the French league, and Portugal have to play Angola, Iran and Mexico in the groups.
Expect him to die on his arse now I've picked him :D

Nah, this thread is only for World Cup bets.
(Im a bit afraid that two Masters threads would kill the enthusiasm for this competition!?).

They've got an easy group and there potential teams in the next couple of rounds also look beatable.
Really like the Top scorer bet as well. Henry vs Togo...ohhh yeah:)
But it was perhaps a bit stupid having both my bets on France..must agree on that..
Come on Zidane..

One small query/concern about the rules. It won't affect me, but it might affect the two people who reach the final.
If either of them is correct with one of his two long-term bets, is it not likely (because of the big prices of most of the long-term bets) that that one factor will override the other 20 bets they are having between them? In other words, the final might simply depend on one of them getting a long-term bet correct, making everything else they do irrelevant. Just a point I thought I'd mention.
si1965

That's a good point - the prices available for the final match will be relatively small unless you go for the random dart approach and get lucky.
Perhaps there should be a separate World-Cup Ballgazer' award for the winner of the long-term bets (with a bonus in the final round if one of the finalists is successful)

A good point of course, but I guess thats the prize for getting it correct. If you bet on the big favourites you will get a low odds though, Brazil for example at 3 or something. So that is not going to blow the race away at the start . If you bet on Australia winning the World Cup and get 5000 points, then well done I say:p

I think Ian's point is: if you can win the competition with a single lucky bet, what is the point of all the research and intuition in selecting 60 other bets?

Just had another idea -
What about two additional prizes along with the overall winner:
"Golden Punt" - the participant with the highest returning bet
"Player of the Tournament" - the participant with the best ROI (not necessarily the winner as often one player is head and shoulders above the others after round one, only to fall away in the latter stage)

But you can't win it with one lucky bet, you need all those other bets in order to get into a position where your long term bet counts.

Exactly, if you get through a tough group (and they almost all are tough), 3 knock out matches and on top of that also predict the winner and/or top goalscorer you really do deserve to win the thing!

I think you're very close to making my point for me there.
You might well get through a tough group, and you then struggle through three tough knock-out matches to get to the final. The other person in the final will have done the same thing. Well done to both of them! A great achievement by both contestants, and the final should then be an exciting contest, nip and tuck, of clever bets and ingenious strategy. But instead we risk turning the final into an event where clever bets and ingenious strategy become irrelevant, because one of the guys has had a fluky selection of the top goalscorer, and none of the bets the other guy can come up with has any chance of compensating for that.
Jim Cannons Moustache

I see what you are saying and i agree to a certain extent - the Group stages will be tough and the finalists will have earnt the right to be there. However, it does nullify the remaining 10 bets if one big long term bet puts one of the finalists out of sight. Or more likely, one of the finalists will have one or both of his bets as distinct possibles (as they will not be decided until the end of the tournament) and this forces his opponent to choose longer shot options.
It kinda upsets the level playing field of the final shoot-out.

Why is it a flukey selection? Because it wins
Just because there are longer odds on these bets doesn't make them less valid if they win. Anyway plenty of folk going for much longer shots in their other bets and yet there are no complaints about these.
It's only a bit of laugh anyway - can see it's going to get very competitive later on if people are worrying about these things.....
Especially if oz gets near the final....

I can see what you're both saying, yes it could turn the final into an anti-climax, but on the other hand.....see if I can describe this...
Say one of the two finalists has chosen Ronaldo and Brazil as his two long termers, but the other finalists long termers have gone down early on.
In the final Brazil play France (for example) and Ronaldo is tied with Henry as leading goalscorer.
Tactically this leaves an intriging connundrum for both players, can Player A bank on Brazil winning and play ultra safe with his 10 bets only for Henry to score a last minute winner to screw him??
Does player B go for broke thinking that player A has an advantage only for the same thing to happen and he finds he could have won playing the percentages???
The fact that the long termers won't be decided till after the final opens up all kinds of tactical possibilities rather than limits them IMHO

The Golden Boot can be all but over before the final though - Lineker managed to secure it at Mexico even though England went out in the quarters. This situation could give one competitor a significant advantage.

I'm sorry, but what? You can't mix and match different books in the same bet, you have to be able to make the bet in real life. Also, you can't have bets that last past the 1st round. And that bet 5 would never be able to be made in real life.

I live in hope - although even with that bet several teams have a considerable head start. I have to hope the Aussies start getting tonked - they're not very good losers. ;)
That Nuno Gomez bet was a bloody waste as well - he's not even going to get a game unless darling Pauleta gets injured. :(
