Darren Clarke's wife Heather has died after a long battle with cancer.

The Irish Ryder Cup star said at last month's Open Championship that he was taking an extended break from golf because her condition had worsened.

In a statement, Clarke confirmed that Heather, 39, passed away at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London in the early hours of Sunday.

She and her husband, who is 38 on Monday, have two sons, Tyrone (8) and Conor (5).

Very surprised how quickly she went in the end, he'd only just gave up golf to look after her.

Agree with all of that. The Marsden is a great hospital.

Only had to see the picture of Darren carrying the coffin to bring a tear to my eye. Very, very sad.

It would be surprising if anything but the best treatment would have been given to her.

I often wonder how i would cope if the same thing happened in our family. It's a hideous thought. How would you even start to explain it to the kids.
