Well, we've just had a big meeting and 5 people out of the 11 in our dept are to be either relocated or made redundant at the start of next year :(
On a slightly better note, I'm getting another trip to Chennai out of it to train up the Indian lads on how to do our job again.

xab
13-12-2006, 06:32 PM
Yeah, I went last year (same reasons...). Loved the Masala Dosa, proper post beer food! :D Looking forward to seeing some of the lads out there again.

One thing that got me, was that the South Indians treated going out for a tandoori much the same as we do :p

Such a great country, I haven't been to Chennai yet but I've seen quite a lot over the last few years. Went to Kerala for a while this year and I love it down there. Much prettier than Goa.

Madras was considered to be too English / reminiscent of the Raj, and as Madras was formed out of two villages Madraspatnam and Chennaipatnam, Chennai was chosen as it's a more Dravidian name. And apparently it was changed about 2 years ago.

And we're 5 and a half hours ahead of what ever you're on :)

xab
18-01-2007, 01:13 PM
Previous answer partially right, apparently area was known as Chennai-something-patnam previously when ruled by a local ruler. And the name was changed about 10 years ago. (Hardly any of the lads in the office are actually from Chennai, and it's best to ask one who actually is!)

All the lads in the office reckon it's the best bit of India, and only two of them are actually from Kerala. (And, not that you're interested, but Keralan women have a reputation for, umm, sensuality :D) If I was to ever get back here on holiday, it'd probably be the area I'd aim for.

I bought my own last year, and also brought about 8 back for friends and family, so he should be quite happy with me! He's red and black and gold and looks great :p

Only minor problem is the swastika on his right hand, while I know it's a 5,000 year old hindu sacred symbol, I find it a touch wrong.

Also got told by the lads in the office here that it's regarded as very lucky to steal your own Ganesha too, but I'm not sure just how much they were trying to get me into trouble :p (They tried telling me I needed to wear a dhoti into the office to celebrate Pangal last week...)

Excellent! Sounds like they enjoy a laugh even if it's your expense!! I know what you mean about the swastika, it's very shocking! Has your Ganesha got a little mouse on it somewhere?

The German term for "swastika" is "Hakenkreuz" ("hooked cross") because the symbol represented two separate pieces crossed (two "S" shaped pieces).

mrgins
23-01-2007, 10:31 PM
but that doesn't explain why the nazis used it
