Trying a Cup format in addition to the regular monthly betting masters.
This competition will run from November until April ’07.
Don’t delay join today!
My suggested format (this will be changed as soon as new good ideas come from you guys).:
- Champions league format; means first a group stage and then knock-out stages.
In the group stages each contestant in a group has to face the others:
For example:
Group A
1. Si1965
2. Drunk Eagle
3. fredman
4. Wildcat Army
Means:
Week 1(44/45): Si1965 vs Wilcat Army, Drunk Eagle vs fredman..
Week 2(46/47): Wildcat Army vs Drunk Eagle, fredman vs Si1965
..
10 bets each game..3 points for the overall win. So if we in the first couple of games get a score of:
1. Si1965 vs Wildcat Army 44 – 67 and 2. Drunk Eagle vs fredman 52-16
Would mean a table like this:
1. Drunk Eagle 1: 1-0-0: 52-16: 3.points
2. Wildcat Army 1: 1-0-0:67-44: 3.points
--------------------------------------------------
3. Si1965 1: 0-0-1:44-67: 0.points
4. fredman 1:0-0-1: 16-52: 0.points
If we do it like this we can have a real change from the usual BM format..where the one with the most points wins each month(nothing wrong with that of course, but would mean that the great 20/1 fluke bets wouldn’t have such a big effect as in the regular BM). Here you would have to show consistent level-headed good betting.
One of the big news with this “Champions league” competition could be the seeding. I would suggest using the marathon table as a seeding tool:
Top 8 (for Jan-July ’06)
1. Si1965 6 - 75
-------------------------------
2. Flat Noodle 6 - 70
3. srs9jps 6 - 64
4. Jim Cannons Moustache 5 - 62
5. LLCOOLSTEVE 6 - 61
6. NO1FAN 6 - 58
7. StuNick 5 - 48
8. Finbar 6 - 48
These 8 would then be the top seeds..and couldn’t meet in the group stage. This system could also be used If their by some miracle would be more than 32 contestants ..i.e. the top 32 is automatically qualified.
After the group stage head to head’s..
A couple of thoughts:
I feel that if we do this in addition to the usual league format we should have it going over a long periode..I wouldn’t have a problem with say over the whole season (from September to May) even. Because of this I feel that we might perhaps have to do 6 games in the group stages. Meaning each contestant had to face there opponents “home and away” (one could for example foresee there being some advantages to being the “Home team”..they away player having to place all his bets before the last betting day for example..).
Duplicated single bets will not bet allowed in the CH cup format, so first come first served.
Example ; Tourno schedule:
1.stage:
Round 1 (weeks:44/45): match 1
Round 2 (46/47): match 2
Round 3 (48/49): match 3
Round 4 (49/51): Match 4
Christmas break
Round 5 (1/2): Match 5
Round 6 (3/4): Match 6
2.stage: (6/7): 16 or 8 teams
3. stage: (9/10): 8 or 4 teams
4. Stage: (12/13): 4 or 2 teams
(5.stage: (15-16): 2)
Number of contestants will always be a “problem”, but if we can get 16 people together then that would be enough.
The ideal would perhaps be 32 just like the real thing.
Comments please, too big and complicated?? Would you be interested in joining such a competition??
What changes would you make?

The idea for this competition came originally from the great minds of Funk Butter and si1965:p
If your interested in joining then just post on this thread..hopefully we can get his competition going from November.

Well if your going to be away for more than 2 weeks then it might be a problem. But will you be without internett connection for two weeks!??
I can't do without my computer for more than a couple of days at a time..

and can someone explain the format
Stigma
18-10-2006, 06:24 AM
The format is there in the first post.
Basically the difference between the usual BM competition and this one is the head to head’s.
4 groups - 4 players in each group and every player has to meet the other 3 twice.
Match 1: Finbar vs foxy 22.points - 79.points = 3 points for foxy
And so on..
The top 2 in each group goes through to the next round.

Some new rules (suggestions) for this competiton:
I was thinking that we might at times have a problem with a player not playing for some reason. I suggest that we in such a situation use the average score of the other game in that group as an indicator on how the single player in the other game are doing. If the single player beats the average score, he records a 3 point winner. If not a loss. The player not competing will automaticly get 0.points.
Fair-play
Duplicated single/multi bets will not bet allowed in the CH cup format, so first come first served.
The “away team” will have to post up all their bets before the last day (will mean midnight Saturday’s for the most part). This giving the “home team” a slight advantage.
Other things?
si1965
18-10-2006, 04:31 PM
Perhaps we should create a reserve list as there are still options if we get 20 or 24 names
(I don't hold out much hope of reaching 32!)
Extra groups of 4 can be created and the progression can be:
Group winner (5 or 6 people)
Best runner-ups (2 or 3)

Nah me neither (32). Think we will struggle to get that many more interested...But there are numerous situations - group settings we can do depending on the number of participants, in the end I think we at least have to set a deadline a day before we start.
Number of participants:
16 – great: 4 x 4 groups: 1 and 2 go through to the next stage
17-19: One could for example add a fifth place in 3 of the groups
20: another group added. The 2 worst 2.place teams going out perhaps..
21..and so on..

You can bet on any event possible. This competition will go from monday to Sunday (2 weeks pr round).
All bets must finish before midnight (UK time) on the Sunday.

(it’s based on table positions throughout the year. So you need to show consistent form..

20-10-2006, 05:09 PM
Just had another thought -
As well as having points for a win what about having bonus points available (a bit like rugby where you get a bonus point for scoring 4 tries).
To encourage consistent sensible betting:
7 or more winning bets (out of 10) = 1 bonus point
Stigma
23-10-2006, 07:10 AM
The trouble I have with that is that it isn’t that difficult getting 7 (or even 10/10) bets correct. One could for example do 1.01 FTSE bets 10 times..we might introduce a limit; bets must be over 1.5 or something but that would perhaps make the whole thing even more complicated.
Stigma
23-10-2006, 07:12 AM
18 people in the competition thus far. I think we should set a deadline for this Wednesday for any new contestants. Doesn’t seem to be any more player’s interest, but just for the sake of it.
If the total is 18 I suggest that two of the 4 groups get's 5 contestants..
Gooders
23-10-2006, 10:12 AM
I would say don't over-complicate the rules too much - this will be a lot of work for you to administer Stig, and the challenge is to produce consistent betting over a long period - which should be enough.
Us long-shot merchants may spring the odd surprise win but we won't go all the way without a bit more consistency.
si1965
23-10-2006, 11:00 AM
I just thought that the bonus point ideas would keep the contest going a bit more – if some one lands a big multi in their first or second bet their opponent has no choice but to do a series of equally unlikely bets to try and overtake. With the bonus point available, there is still an option to aim for the single point.
With the possibility that the winner of a group may not just be decided by the most wins but also the number of bonus points earned, may also encourage more conservative betting or at the very least , limit the big accys to one or two bets.
But am happy to stay with the rules as they are if no-one else agrees.
Finbar
23-10-2006, 11:24 AM
my thoughts are that having bonus points would work against the horseracing value seekers (i.e. LLCS & Gooders) who only need to land one or two bets to post a decent total
It would also discriminate against StuNick so the idea does have some merits
Gooders
23-10-2006, 12:40 PM
I'll go with the majority - I was mostly just thinking of poor old Stig who has to keep track of it all. ;)

It's okay for me, but I'm getting a few mixed signals..so a vote:
Bonus points
A. Yes please (but I hope you agree that we set a "bets must be at (or over) 1.5" limit (just like the goldmine).
Or else it would just be too easy getting a (potensially) very valuable bonus point).
or
B. Nooo..don't want that
I've got si1965 down as an A..not sure what finbar and Gooders ended up with?

So this is how the seeding for the group stage looks like (based on table positions from January to June 2006):
First seeds
Si1965, Flat Noodle, srs9jps and Jim Cannons Moustache
Second seeds
LLCOOLSTEVE, NO1FAN, StuNick and Finbar
Third seeds
Stigma, Gooders, Funk Butter and Gav the Hamster
Fourth seeds
Pauldrulez, fredman, Ozeagle and richdeniro
New entries (well Bunghole have tried it once before this year but..)
Bunghole and foxy
This means (if we don’t get anymore contestants) that we will have 4 groups, two of which will have 5 players in it).
The draw will be done tomorrow and that will also be deadline for any new contestants..

Well if Claudia Schiffer isn’t available we will see..was thinking about just doing the draw midday tomorrow(say around 1130 Norwegian time)..so might just get a work colleague to help out.
Going to be fun explaining names such as Bunghole and Funk Butter…should put a webcam up..:o
(I’m going to be away Thursday through Saturday so that’s why I thought it might be good doing the draw so “early”).

I'll vote B no bonus points but think that saying bets have to be over 1.50 is a good idea regardless.
Stigma
24-10-2006, 04:13 PM
4-3 to the B - no bonus point at the moment then.
I think an overall betting rule of over 1.5 would be a bit "harsh".

The other alternative of course, which I have always thought would be a good idea, is to only include profit in the league table.
Therefore if you back 20 winners @1.10 you get 20 x 1 point = 20 points, not 220 points!

though i think the decision has already been made, i just wanna assert that i would have voted 'B' as well... the more complication, the more confusing people will get...
And i'd say let's keep the old format in terms of calculating the profit... it's good to have a brainstorm and vote what is best for the competition, but i think it's best to keep the changes to the formatting to minimum... just my opinion.... :)

Not really - the people with 0 would have -200, the people with 500 would have 300 - the positions in the table would be exactly the same. No need to tinker with it, IMHO.

The "away team" will have to post up all their bets before midnight on the last Saturday (all rounds follow the usual week schedule so all last round days are Sunday's).
Should mean an advantage to the home team...

I was actually thinking that we use the “goal score” differences.
Example
1. Si1965 vs Wildcat Army 44 – 67 and 2. Drunk Eagle vs fredman 52-16
Would mean a table like this:
1. Drunk Eagle 1: 1-0-0: 52-16: 3.points +36
2. Wildcat Army 1: 1-0-0:67-44: 3.points +23
--------------------------------------------------
3. Si1965 1: 0-0-1:44-67: 0.points -23
4. fredman 1:0-0-1: 16-52: 0.points -36
The other option would of course be to use the total points for the one player. Interested in opinions as usual..
I personally like the goal difference idea best.

You could have in the last week the need not just to beat someone but beat them by a specific margin:p
Jim Cannons Moustache

The thing about the goal difference scenario is that it has the potential to be unfair,
for example. Take one of the regular horse bettors (merely because they tend to be longer odds so the example works better!) say Gooders.
Week A: Gooders plays oz, he picks out 10 horses they all lose, oz picks 5 winners and scores 100 points.
Week B: Gooders plays me, he gets on a run of 7/10 winners scores 350 points, I pick out 5 winners at smaller odds and get 100 points.
oz ends up with a points difference some 350 better than mine even though we have the same record in picking winners...
Stigma
25-10-2006, 11:47 AM
Yeah I guess, but one could also just call it luck of the draw I guess. One could argue that it is the same in football/other sports. Meeting say Liverpool on their in-form days are very different to meeting them when they are having an off period, from 1-6 to a 2-1 score-line at Anfield for example.
Just thought it would add a bit of flavour to the usual set rules..but majority rules as always, so will see what the others think..:)

I agree with JCM - it is not like football where you can play defensively and keep a clean sheet. The only way in which you can influence an opponents bets is by posting an early lead and forcing them into riskier high odds gambles.
So much better to record a 'hit rate' of percentage winners (easy enough to keep track of with 10 bets) and use this to determine any tie-breaks.

.
That was what I was thinking, play a defensive (just winning with the odd point) and you may suffer for it later on. Or go all out attack and perhaps you'll win big.
But as I say, majority rules. I've got it at 2-2 now...(JCM/si1965 - Stigma/srs9jps).
"Goal difference or total points for each"?? What do YOU think??

Total points, unfortunately you are comparing apples to oranges with our little betting and actual Champions League matches. Liverpool doesn't get 5 points for a goal versus Hamburg's one point. Maybe if you had goal difference between winning bets and not winning points.
Stigma
25-10-2006, 06:48 PM
Well I don’t know if I agree with your conclusions.
It’s not like a football match I’ll of course agree. But then again we don’t often get “5-1” score-lines. I would imagine most games would be pretty close, 5-1 = something like 100 – 20. Doubt we will see that many such big differences in the score-lines. Especially if we know that every point counts somewhat.
3-3 I make it..

The goal difference idea is totally unfair - but it would bring a new twist to proceedings that would give this competition an extra dimension as compared to all of the other ongoing betting threads (and it'll need that if it is to retain our interest over a long period).
So I vote goal difference. :p

Must say I really felt for you when I saw that, especially when it looked like you’d done some real hard research on each bet!
But it is hard to differ from the competition schedule.:(
The away person doesn’t have to post his bets up first (the rule is though that he has to have posted up all his bets before the last Sunday of each round).
The home team can of course place all his 10 bets when they want. It just a small possible advantage for the home team.
Re the byes..it is always difficult when you have odd numbers competing. But felt that it was the best way of doing things, so that no one felt left-out.
In the second round another player in the 5 man groups gets a rest…it’s not ideal but the best I could come up with. Dunno how the other thing you mentioned would work?!
Voted on what? The main format things have been discussed on the October BM thread..and then we just kind of took if from there.

Did you not mean 'before the last Saturday'?
As I understand it for this round
Away player must post his 10th bet by midnight Sat Nov 11th
Home player must post his 10th bet by midnight Sun Nov 12th
Thus giving home player a slight advantage (one day of knowing what score he has to beat)

The thing is that the 22 points gained by srs aren't ehh table points.
If we get a score-line like this:
Group B
Srs9jps vs foxy 55 (10) - 453 (10)
LLCOOLSTEVE vs Ozeagle 180 (10) - 14 (10)
Table would look like this:
Group B
1. foxy 1: 1-0-0: 453-55: 3.points +398
2. LLCOOLSTEVE 1: 1-0-0: 180-14: 3.points +166
-------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Ozeagle 1: 0-0-1: 14-180: 0.points -166
4. Srs9jps 1: 0-0-1: 55-453:0.points -398
