It won't happen anyway. It'll end up being moved to Sydney or somewhere at the last moment. London is incapable of hosting events like this.

Good luck to anyone having discussions with Treasury about changing VAT rules.

I bloody hope it does go to Sydney.
We (anyone unfortunate enough to have a London postcode) will be paying for this for decades now. I knew from the start that at some point it would go over budget - every public project does - but for the bid team to forget to add VAT because they assumed the treasury would waive it?? How ••••••• inept is that??

I would love to think the above was not true, but I just can't convince myself. This country is a shambles at the moment, I cannot believe we even tried to get the Olympics. Please prove me wrong, but I wont hold my breath.

In a nutshell the whole costing of the Olympics is wrong - the organising committee who gave the original estimate of £2.38bn forgot to include VAT on construction work.
From what I heard on 5 Live, the treasury is saying it won't waive the tax. The question is, who is going to pay for it? My bet is us poor bastards living in London.
:grrr:
feckin' right, why should people outside pay for all your shiny new train stations, stadiums and housing!! :bash:

On a serious note though - the Olympic games will be a success. Different scale, I know, but all this sort of doom mongering was around before the Commonwealth Games in Manchester and they were a roaring success.

This was all expected of course, that they under-estimated could be construed that they led the Olympic Committee astray on purpose knowng it would look more attractive, potentially...
Of course if we had world class sports facilities to begin with we wouldn't have to be ripping up east London and paving it all with concrete to begin with.
The transport will be a joke too, Crossrail's been given the green light but it won't be ready until 2013 at the earliest...and by that time single fares on the underground will cost over £6 one way the way increases are going in recent years...plus they'll be hot and un-airconditioned. The new trains ordered by London Overground for the ELL extension (coming into operation sometime between 2009/10 had the opportunity to have air conditioning but TfL decided against it...do any of them travel on the tube in the summer?

So my council tax goes up and i benefit how exactly? The only people it's going to benefit are those living in Stratford and the corporate sponsors. I don't live in Stratford and I'm hardly going to use my 'shiny new train stations' to travel up there and use the facilities am I? Not exactly convenient is it?

Shouldn't have been held in London, but wouldn't have won if it were anywhere else. It will be a disaster, see New Wembley, Millenium Dome etc as examples. If the missing of VAT is anything to go by just think what else is going to go wrong. This government cannot organise anything, total shambles. Still, won't cause me any worries :D

No, but the money is injected into your region and that circulates. Do you think everyone working on the project will spend it all elsewhere?

It will have to be bailed out by the treasury, who will just have received a windfall just about equal to the amount of tax due, because we're hosting the Olympics!
Tax goes to Governments, Governments have to bail out events like this if they go over-budget. They might just as well waive the VAT due, because it's money they won't see. I guess that's what the bid team relied upon.

Non story, the builders charge VAT and the VAT then goes back to the government the Olympic committee in turn claim back their VAT from the government, or custom and excise to be precise.

As I doubt the organising committee will be receiving VAT as part of their funding surely this 'oversight' should work in their favour as any VAT that is paid will be able to be reclaimed, above what they have received.

Perhaps but I am not sure if something such as the Olympic organising committee would be VAT registered in the first place ( is VAT charged on the tickets ? ) and therefore not able to claim any VAT back.
But this is just a guess.
What is more ominous is the resignation of the American who had been employed to head up the construction side of things. I saw something in the papers this weekend about potential problems with unexploded WW2 bombs needing to be unearthed at several of the main sites and nothing having been done in the last year at all.

I have no doubt the Olympics will be a huge success as they always are in every country.
No doubt there will be loads of scare stories usually put about by people who know nothing whatsoever of the real situation and never wanted the games in England in the first place.
I for one am delighted that we have them and have the chance to show the world what a great job we can do on putting on such a global event.

My apologies for raising the thread in the first place. I obviously don't know as much as you do and I'll keep quiet in future.

Yes, I was about to say the same. Radio 5 have obviouly realised they over-hyped the story too and have toned down their reporting of it now.

The Private Eye take on this was that they were glad to get rid of him because he was useless.

Oh dear. Although to be fair I did think similar not so long ago. However, having been to events and often travel into London for work the games have been organised brilliantly. You know what even the food was superb and not stupidly expensive.
