Been made "redundant" twice now. Thankfully both times got back into work fairly quickly and ended up with a few quid off my mortgage.

Received the notification thorugh the post while on paternity leave. Was a shock at first becuase I hadn't stepped a foot out of line in all the 15 years I've been hear...

Then some beancounter decides to cut £10M off the DTI wage bill to pay for some money wasting IT system somewhere (that'll not ever work properly) and 400 staff are made redundant...

Three deaths in rocket test probed
One worker had just returned to Scaled Composites
Staff and Wire Services
Article Last Updated: 07/27/2007 09:52:09 PM PDT

MOJAVE - Charles May was the consummate rocketeer.

As a child, he built model rockets in his spare time. When he got older, he rigged them on bicycles and canoes to make them zip.

"He was outgoing. I wouldn't call him a geek type of person," recalled older brother Gary May.

Charles May, 45, was killed about 2:30 p.m. Thursday during a routine test of a propellent flow system for a new space tourism vehicle at a Mojave Desert airport site used by Scaled Composites LLC.

Eric Blackwell, 38, also died at the scene while Todd Ivens, 33, died during surgery. Three other employees were critically injured.

May was part of Scaled's history-making SpaceShipOne team, which launched the first private manned rocket into space.

He left after SpaceShipOne won the X Prize to work at another space-related company and had just returned to Scaled on Monday, his family said.

Scaled founder Burt Rutan said the explosion happened as workers were testing the flow of nitrous oxide for SpaceShipTwo, a spaceline for suborbital flights.

The test was considered routine and did not involve a rocket firing.

"As you may imagine, the Scaled family is devastated by this event," said a statement released Friday by the company.
"As we grieve together, we are also beginning to gather up all of the information to determine what caused this accident. We are committed to learn all we can from this tragedy and move ahead."

The state division of Occupational Safety and Health also is investigating. Spokeswoman Kate McGuire said Cal-OSHA has up to six months to complete its investigation, but typically completes them between two weeks to two months.

Scaled Composites has had no violations in the past, McGuire said.

At least one other test had been conducted in support of SpaceShipTwo without incident. Several similar tests had been done for SpaceShipOne, the first privately funded, privately developed craft to reach space.

"Even though we've done what is considered very, very dangerous work for 33 years, this is the first time we ever injured anybody during a test," Rutan said during a news conference Thursday night. "We were doing a test we believed was completely safe, that's why we don't remove people from it like we do in a rocket test."

SpaceShipOne, financed by billionaire Paul G. Allen, made three sub-orbital flights in 2004 - two of them within a two-week period. That achievement earned the SpaceShipOne team the $10 million Ansari X Prize.

Scaled Composites is building SpaceShipTwo for billionaire Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic.

The spaceship, envisioned as the first of a fleet of five, will be used to take tourists on suborbital space flights. The spacecraft is expected to be able to have room for two pilots and up to six passengers.

Northrop Grumman, which is in the process of acquiring full ownership of Scaled Composites, and the Personal Spaceflight Federation, an organization dedicated to space tourism, also issued statements.

"Northrop Grumman extends our condolences to the people of Scaled Composites and share in their grief and sadness with the loss and injuries of their co-workers," the Northrop Grumman statement said.

Northrop Grumman, which owned 40 percent of Scaled Composites, reached an agreement early this month to take full ownership. The sale is expected to be completed in August.

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the families and those injured or lost in today's incident," the statement from the Personal Spaceflight Federation said. "We will await the results of the investigation before further comment, but we have complete confidence that the causes of the incident will be found in due course."

Blast kills two at Virgin's US space airport
By staff and agencies
Last Updated: 2:37am BST 28/07/2007

An explosion has killed two people at an airport in the California desert linked to Richard Branson's aerospace travel company Virgin Galactic.

The blast, at the Mojave Air and Space Port facility at 9.30pm last night, released nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, into the air.

US firefighters said the cause of the explosion is not immediately known.

There are two confirmed fatalities and four seriously injured," confirmed engineer Roberto Figueroa of the Kern County Fire Department.

The victims worked for Scaled Composites LLC, the Mojave-based builder of SpaceShipOne, the first private manned rocket to reach space.

Virgin Galactic hopes to use the upcoming SpaceShipTwo to jet tourists into space.

Aerospace designer Burt Rutan told reporters the blast occured during a test of the flow of nitrous oxide through an injector in the course of testing components for a new rocket motor for SpaceShipTwo.

"We were doing a test we believe was safe," Mr Rutan said. "We don't know why it exploded."

Video footage in the US showed wrecked equipment and vehicles at the airport in the desert north of Los Angeles, near Edwards Air Force Base.

No information about the victims will be released until their families have been notified.

Richard Branson has reportedly investing at least $200 million for a fleet of Mr Rutan's spaceships, including SpaceShipTwo.

Already the company has sold 200 seats on the first flights, set to take off in 2009, and they aim to have 500 flights a year using two spacecraft.

Each passenger will pay about £100,000 for the privilege of one of the cabin’s six reclining seats on the two hour flight, and a five minute spacewalk.

Have been to the NASA Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Unbelievable how those rockets manage to take off at all. On the Saturn rockets NASA had a 99.9% acceptance level for mechanical tolerances. That still left the possibility of 6,000 (0.01% of the total) items not working on any rocket and they started the countdown...

Scary considering the last diaster with the ceramic tiles...

BA were in collusion with other airlines too. Not only Virgin. So along with the expected class actions from disgruntled customers it may well be Virgin who put BA out of business...

Princess

This type of behaviour goes back to the days of Freddie Laker when BA, Pan Am and others colluded to put him out of business too - cost all of those airlines dear and it appears no lessons were learned either!

I guess not really. Harry's consumed her life for quite a long time so it must be hard to even think about a new character.

It was actually a cracking night. Especially when the rain came and we got drenched..

Really really glad I made the effort and went. Feel sure it is one of those games we will remember for the rest of our lives as against the many that are long since forgotten.

The only thing that spoils it for me is the line of water that looks like it is swerage but obvioulsy isn't that cuts through the beach.

It's from a stream that comes under the bridge and out into the sea - definitely not a sewar!

We used to use the beach at Polzeath when we lived down there and they had a similar stream. Knew it would be safe but always a little wary of walking in it.

How lovely. I've been watching Coast on the Beeb and I now have a hankering to go to Northern Ireland, some of the coastline looks stunning. Have a great time - do you want me to text you updates from Ipswich?

BaldEagle96
22-08-2007, 07:27 AM
Yes please to Ipswich. If I manage to find a pub showing it I will let you know not to bother. Watched coast as well and loved it. Following on from the episode on Sunday we are going to go over to the Orkneys and take in Scarpa Fell..

Northern Ireland is now on our list as well. :p

Not bad thanks - apart from this dismal weather. Gearing up for the last school year (yay!) now. Results for AS were not brilliant but I think it's shocked Loopy into just how much she's got to knuckle down to study!

I must say that if I was holidaying on the English coast somewhere, this weather would be wonderful for walking along the beach. Blows the cobwebs away. It's just that Camberwell is dreary enough already without it being grey and overcast all day :p
