Ouch that Hurt!
12-11-2003, 03:00 PM
Was having this discussion at work yesterday - mmm all feeling to happy so decided to lessen the mood.

I went for Cemetary Gates by The Smiths in an ironic gesture I suppose.

Also went to a Smiths Double whammy as selected "I know its over" as the song I would commit suicide to was the occasion to occur.

Any other selections?

I cannot for the life of me comprehend quite why some poor 'lambs' make decisions as to which flowers they would like on their coffin or indeed which songs they wish to be played during THEIR funeral service on the basis that they will be totally oblivious to all such matters on the day in question.

I could NOT give a 'Fig' as to the entertainment provided for those who happen to attend the 'celebration' of my retirement to the great Conservative Conference in the sky.

recently, a friend's funeral included a mass rendition of the wild rover and then the theme to match of the day as exit music, and that was perfect.

Another One Bites The Dust - Queen

"Steve walks warily down the street,
with the brim pulled way down low
Ain't no sound but the sound of his feet,
machine guns ready to go
Are you ready, Are you ready for this
Are you hanging on the edge of your seat
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
To the sound of the beat

Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
And another one gone, and another one gone
Another one bites the dust
Hey, I'm gonna get you too
Another one bites the dust"

Due to some complex recent financial issues, the wife and I had to review our will. One of the notes in a leaflet suggested clarifying or discussing the method of 'disposal' and the service. So we debated songs, amongst other things.

'Glad all over' was ruled out for me by the missus on various grounds, but she 'allowed' me to have one of my fav sounds of all time.....Going Underground by The Jam. :p

"time to say goodbye" a nice song, my Nan requested it for her funeral last year and i'd never heard of it before, I had to choose a 3 min section from 12 mins of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No.2 as she hadn't specified what part she wanted played and it was the hardest thing i ever had to do to date, and even after listening to it 50+ times at home trying to select the right bit i still felt as if i'd been belted in the stomach when i heard it going into the crem. She also had "Right Said Fred" by Bernard Cribbins that soon put a wry grin on everyones faces :).

I must say that i'd have one of the following

Oasis - Champagne Supernova
Led Zeppelin - Babe Im Gonna Leave You
Afro Celt Sound System - Lagan

A thread on this topic currently exists! (see, variaition!)

I previously put 'Cast No Shadow' by Oasis but right now I'd go for 'Nitro (Youth Energy)' by The Offspring.

Of those I've so far 'Time of Your Life' would be a very good, uplifting choice.

It's All Over Now, Baby Blue by Bob Dylan

You must leave now, take what you need, you think will last.
But whatever you wish to keep, you better grab it fast.
Yonder stands your orphan with his gun,
Crying like a fire in the sun.
Look out the saints are comin' through
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

The highway is for gamblers, better use your sense.
Take what you have gathered from coincidence.
The empty-handed painter from your streets
Is drawing crazy patterns on your sheets.
This sky, too, is folding under you
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

All your seasick sailors, they are rowing home.
All your reindeer armies, are all going home.
The lover who just walked out your door
Has taken all his blankets from the floor.
The carpet, too, is moving under you
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

Leave your stepping stones behind, something calls for you.
Forget the dead you've left, they will not follow you.
The vagabond who's rapping at your door
Is standing in the clothes that you once wore.
Strike another match, go start anew
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

I've never understood people thinking they want happy songs at their funeral. Sod that for a bag of biscuits. I want everyone balling their eyes outs. I would choose the saddest songs I could name.

Or

'I'll find a way' (to see you again) by Rachael Yamagata.

It's a lump in the throat song and it might just weird a few people out!

My ex girlfriend's sister had live forever played at her funeral. She'd been to an Oasis gig six months before and when they played it she said to her husband that she wanted it at her funeral...such a shame it was so soon after. It was so fitting though as she was a Manchester lass from that whole generation.

I might have All My Loving or The Things We Said Today by the Beatles at mine
