With other clubs with seemingly more spending clout then Palace running the rule over Billy Sharp and Freddie Eastwood, Arsenal seem prepared to do business for this young Irishman.

Currently on loan at Falkirk and has been a bit of a goal machine.

Celtic tried a £700k bid but were told to raise it to £1m and then they'd talk. (Source: numerous press cuttings, nothing reliable)

Worth a shout?

Seems a very good shout SC. Interesting article here and quite a bit of info generally on l'Arse site -

Just the sort of thing we should be looking for by the sounds of it although I haven't seen enough of the player.

Roy Keane likes him and stated his interest a few days ago. He did spend a little time up there before and maybe the Niall & Roy Irish connection might be a draw. On the other hand maybe he's put down roots in London and he'd prefer to return south ?

Irish connection at Palace include O'Morrison, Macken (if he returns?) Kennedy and the youngster Sean Scannell.

Plus there's a cracking Irish shop in Mitcham for all his Galtee needs! :D

He's the sort of player we *should* be looking at, the type we should be at least linked with - young star in the making and all that. Doesn't seem to happen at Palace anymore...

True, but Celtic are also alledgedly in for Will Hoskins. Unlikely that they would buy both (probably one or the other), and I would be more than happy with whichever of these two Celtic DON'T buy

Plus it would almost certainly make Riordan available from Celtic who has only made 2 sub appearances in the SPL this year after hitting 20 goals for Hibs last season!

Would love to get Stokes but he is a huge Celtic fan(born in Dublin) so will probably g there but as has been mentioned would mean that Riordan or Craig Beattie would be surplus there.

Stokes' progress pleases Wenger

Stokes was named SPL young player of the month for October
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is "very happy" with Anthony Stokes' form at Falkirk while confirming that no bids have been made for the on-loan striker.
The Dublin-born 18-year-old is the SPL's current top scorer, netting 13 goals in 14 games since his arrival from the Gunners.

Wenger told The Sun: "Anthony has made a big step up to the SPL and has done very well - I'm very happy about it.

"Ideally, I'd like all of our young kids on loan to come back to Arsenal."

The Bairns are hoping that Wenger will extend the Irishman's stay until the end of the season in order to continue his development.

And John Hughes, the Falkirk head coach, said: "We want to keep him here, certainly until the end of the season. We'd be thrilled if that happened.

"We've not heard anything yet but we're hoping we'll keep him.

"Whatever Arsenal decide we'll respect - but hopefully we'll get the Christmas present we all want."

Should we got for him?!

Irish teenage striker Anthony Stokes has played his last game for Falkirk, BBC Scotland understands.

The SPL's top goalscorer has been on loan from Arsenal but it is understood that deal, which expires on 31 December, will not be extended.

The 18-year-old is due to return to London, but is likely to be sold in the January transfer window.

Charlton, Sunderland and an SPL club are known to be interested in signing the striker.

Stokes scored his third hat-trick for Falkirk this season in the 3-1 victory over Inverness Caledonian Thistle on Saturday.

Falkirk boss John Hughes had stated his desire to keep the player at the club, but said he would respect Arsenal's decision.

If Sunderland and Charlton are in for him, we definitely have a chance.

Stokes has returned to Arsenal after his loan finished. Must be worth taking a punt on him on a season loan at least. Top goal scorer in the Scottish Premier league, can't be to bad.

Is when they will need to replace Darren Bent which is what it will be doing.

If/When they lose Bent they will need to already have someone lined up.

£2.7m is ridiculous money to pay for a youth team player who has only experienced competitive league football in the lower scottish leagues.

Hope CAFC pay over the odds for him and he turns out to be a dud :o

Gone to Sunderland for 2m. A lot of money for someone with so little experience. I think I'd rather have had Stokes with the possibilities to come than Kuqi with his best long behind him.

He is the SPL's top scorer, more goals than any Old Firm striker!

Once again it's scouting, not really the academy that are producing these youngsters. All these clubs seem to do is watch the Under 17, 18, 19 World Championships and poach the best players.

With Aresnal you have a point, they scout teh world, looking at ntional youth teams picking up good young players. The best academy in this country over a sustained period has been Man U who have several good young British players coming through most years. Their success throughout the mid/late 90s was also built on a great youth team.

I cant think of too many youth team players at Man U who have made the grade over the past few seasons - in the 90's they were awesome at producing local talent.

I would argue against United. Yes they had that Golden Year of Becks, the Nevilles, Scholes and Butt, but since then only O'Shea, Fletcher and Brown. They seem to fill up the lower leagues though.

He paid more than Upsons wage yes, i thought most loans now had a fee attached to them. We enquired about Upson and were told it would cost £x for us to have him, we accepted the deal.

I am really pissed off cos when i went to the club shop i bough a car sticker, i then found out i had paid far more than it was costing the club shop - i was disgusted! ;) Can't really see what Jordan was upset about, were we meant to be doing Arsenal a favour by taking Upson off their hands for a while?

Same with any academy though, the average footballer plays for 15 years, so even if you had a massive squad of 30 players all home grown then you could only average 2 per year.

In their current squad they have:

Gary Neville
Wes Brown
Ryan Giggs
Paul Scholes
John O'shea
Kieron Richardson
Darren Fletcher

They have 7 more youngsters out on loan and 7 more in the squad but not playing.

Not many teams anywhere in Europe can say that. but at the very top of the game they will always be looking for the very best, and if they do not quite cut it they will be sold. For every one of the 7 first team players, there are 4 or 5 in the lower leagues.

I don't think any fee was mentioned, simply that we were paying around double the Wages that Upson was actually on at Arsenal.

I don't think that SJ took too kindly to Dein's insistence that he was doing Palace a favour, when in actual fact he was trying to screw every penny out of us.

That said. SJ has said that he admires Dein for his single minded attitude towards Arsenal. I think the "smiling assassin" line has been taken out of context.

But that isnt several good british youngsters coming through most years as you claimed and ceratinly none for several years!

Indeed if you go from the time just after their great youth team then Leeds have been far more succesful at producing youngsters in the past decade. Not only do they have their own final youth team which included the likes of Woodgate, Smith, Robinson and Kewell but they other gems as well - Lennon springs to mind for example.

Wouldn't disagree with you on Leeds although i suspect administration and financial difficulties have had their affect on the set up there now.

Of all those players none are still at Leeds, i simply mentioned the Man U ones who were still there, although only Beckham and Neville i think play top flight.

They have struggled in recent years (the rules on signing academy players affected them badly) they still produce good players and i don't think there is a better academy on a consistent basis bringing through British talent at the moment.

If Crewe where higher up they would be seen as a success, seems that the main objective of the academy is to help the club survive.

Also Keane is quoted as saying there was competition from a number of high profile clubs.

for some reason i get a gut feeling that Man U will have a buy-back clause if Rossi achieves X amount of targets, say 20 goals in the Championship, 'cos i personally don't think Rossi would have gone to Sunderland without some sort of assurance that he would be playing at a higher level sooner or later.
