I always thought HP owned Compaq. Is there any difference?
Thanks

I have a compaq presario, and it has worked fine for 3 years (not quite up to 25 yet dave ;) )
I am not really sure what constitutes a good brand, as there seems to be horror stories for pretty much every brand out there but ours has been pretty reliable though, although I dont think we really hammered it to the maximum of its capacity.
I always thought that HP and Compaq were one in the same but one of the "brand names" is cheaper than the other.
Not exactly a scientific survey but I asked a colleague who uses an HP lap top what he thought of it. I got a good 10 seconds of obscenity, profanity and invocation of dark forces. Coming from a Baptist I thought this was significant. I think HP do own Compaq.

The motherboard failed on my HP Pavilion laptop last week after or two and a bit years only.
I would never buy another HP machine as a result.

Thankfully it is not for me. However why the difference in price - does one use better components than the other?
