The BBC and BSkyB are set to lose the rights to televise the FA Cup and England home internationals to ITV and Setanta, newspaper reports have said.

The Football Association is set to announce the new package with reports suggesting ITV and Setanta will conclude a four-year £400m-plus deal.

The contract from August 2008 is said to be worth £100m more than the existing deal with the BBC and BSkyB.

BSkyB and Setanta won a £1.7bn auction to screen Premiership games last year.

Sporting priority

Snatching the FA Cup and England rights from the BBC would be a major coup for ITV and its executive chairman Michael Grade.

Mr Grade made boosting ITV's coverage of live sporting events a priority when he left the BBC to join ITV in December.

The broadcaster already has the terrestrial rights to the Champion's League, which it shares with BSkyB.

The BBC and BSkyB have held the FA Cup rights since 2001.

BSkyB and Setanta are involved in an increasingly fierce battle for pay-per-view sports rights.

Last year the Irish broadcaster secured a six-year deal to televise the PGA golf tour featuring 40 leading tournaments, rights previously held by Sky.

Setanta also holds the rights to broadcast the Scottish Premier League.

Wouldn't surprise me if there was Virgin money behind this. Apparently they were trying to team up with Setanta in order to combat the current no Sky One etc. situation.

Which will clearly be bollocks.

Why would Virgin give a competitor cash?

Depressing.

ITV is worse than the bbc with the likes of 'Andy and Ally Pitchside' and other 'experts' such as El Tel.

It would be nice, if, as well as being able to stump up the cash, the winner of the contract had to prove they were actually able to provide a decent product.

Anyone with any pride in their own product would never let it anywhere near the shambles that is ITV Sport.

Totally agree, ITV sport is poo. Don't the FA realise that the viewing figures drop when it's on ITV. I'm sorry, the FA don't realise anything because they are a bunch of tools :D

ITV sport is rubbish.

Really think the FA care how good the coverage is? Of course they don't. It's all about the bucks, as everything is.

One bonus. No John Motson.

Following the ITV digital debacle ITV should not be allowed football ever again.

Also by giving it to Setanta how the hell is that offering choice to the consumer. All that would happen is that for someone who has sky they would have to pay again to just get the fa cup matches.

Bit of a tricky one, no one likes a monopoly like Sky but at least everything is in one place. Setanta are going to make available all their pay content on freeview so they could be massive, they have already nicked the Aussie Rugby League, US golf and assorted motor racing from Sky. Throw in all the other footie they have and you have a viable alternative to Sky Sports.
Anyway the BBC is way overated. Lineker, Shearer, Motson, Garth Crooks, truly abysmal

Another reason to not watch England.

I cant believe Sky would give up England though.

It is only down to money, the FA are not interested in the football fan, who will again get fleeced by having to subscriptions to Sky and Setanta.
ITV coverage of all sports is crap!

I have to say i thorougly enjoy watching the BBC sport with gary lineker. Not so with ITV though. Find Gary Lineker light homoured whilst also being honest.

Do you remember that time that El Tel did a Sven impression whilst covering an England game?

I agree, the problem with both Sky and SHITV is that they feel they have to "sell" the games to the audience by always saying what a great match it is. I'm glad to say I never watched the SHITV version of MOTD, but I can only imagine how poor it was. They ruined F1 with adverts, everything they touch turns to poo.

I have to say that since I gave up Sky last year I haven't missed it at all, although I do enjoy the £45 a month I have saved. I had Sky+ and bought a top of the range Freeview PVR (which has now paid for itself in saved subscriptions) and have never looked back. I think the problem is that both Sentanta and ITV will struggle for audiences and I can see Sky's dominance slowly ebbing away too. I think that this truely will be the last of the big bucks UK football TV deals as they way to watch all the footie is now too spread out and you could be looking at the best part of £60 to £65 a month, which is way too much for all but your most ardent, and wealthy fans.

My take on it too.

That said - Charlton season ticket holder Grade might spruce up their coverage & have proper production values.

why oh why does anyone think giving ITV another shot at football will be a good Idea?

Look what they did to football - nearly distoyed it - give it back to the BEEB and SKY and stick to digging your own grave

Is it me or are ITV broadcasts on freeview pretty dire also...

Also a shame that the Beeb will not have it as when their HD finally gets broadcast on freeview we could have had it in HD...ah well.

I recently started subscribing to Setanta. To get the NRL, NHL and footie from next year is well worth the money.

I don't think Sky are giving up any England matches, they still have the rights to away matches while BBC currently have England home matches. Sky only lose the FA Cup games I think.

thankfully BBC have MoTD... but when does that deal run out?! Surely they can't lose that too?!

Actually, according to the papers this a.m. the final decision was influenced by the FA thinking that the BBC was far too critical of the England team and "chief coaches".
As we all know, the BBC is a pussy cat.
The FA is some sort of sub-Blairite organisation which feels free to bugger things up at every turn, pander to every "G14" whim, but will ignore and censor any mild criticism, and even start vendettas against critical individuals.
SJ was 100% right about this.
Just look at the (absolute snorting mediocre) quality of the individuals at the FA.:vader: :moo:

Don't have Sky, but i will miss the FA cup games on there. Watched some of the PPV scottish games on Setanta this season and have to say the commentry is as bad if not worse than the BBC. Hopefully they will get new commentators for next season, but whatever anyone says Sky has the best coverage of football in Britain and probably the world.

I agree, I cant think of one decent pundit or commentator that gives an honest fair view on a game of football. No matter what channel its on, you're going to have a few muppets getting paid alot of money talking shite!

Im pleased that Sky are not having it all their own way though.

Greg Dyke is on Brentford`s board & is widely known to be a Man Utd fan. Grade is definitely a Charlton fan.

One other part of the deal is that there will be 41 FA Cup ties televised under the new deal, as opposed to the current 25 per season.

Great, Setanta is scooping up more soccer rights, which I'm sure affects what I can see here in the US. I still don't feel like paying $15 extra a month for it, I'll stick with my Fox Soccer Channel and Gol TV until all their games get bought out too.

MENTALLY TOUGH

Will this lead to ITV no longer be able to afford the £1.50 plus a packet of pork scratchings contract with the football league to show highlights ?
