Terry has been himself this season, solid Premiership defender. But he hasnt been among the best 2. Same with Lampard and Gerrard - they have done well for their clubs, but have been no better than their own previous seasons.

I'd go with:

Foster

Richards
Vidic
Carragher (though Campbell has been superb this season)
Shorey

C Ronaldo
Sidwell
Scholes
Giggs

Drogba
Berbi

apart from Micah Richards who i think is over-rated, i agreee with the rest.

shorey for england is a very good call.

Vidic
Carragher
Finnan

Ronaldo
Scholes
Gerrard
Giggsy Wiggsy

Drogba
Berbatov (in last 3 months due to lack of other good strikers)

I'd go with this. I'm still debating who I would pick out of Benni McCarthy and Berbatov though.

As good as Vidic has been for Man U I think Rio has been better and had maybe his best season so far for Man U.

I think it's because of the presence of Vidic that Ferdinand has been able to blossom this year. For several seasons he's been playing alongside centre-backs who think they are better footballers than they really are and are therefore error prone - Brown, Sylvestre, etc. As a result his own game has been impeded. Vidic is more of a 'pure' defender - superb reader of the game, strong in the tackle and good in the air. When he's got the ball he gives it easy. This has released Rio from his shackles and it's noticeable that his confidence on the ball, long range passing and forays forward are more prevalent now than at any time since his Hammers days.

Vidic has been the key signing for Fergie this year and for that reason I would make him player of the year. I'm not sure that Man U would be so close to the league and Eurpoean Cup double without Vidic, regardless of Ronaldo's attacking brilliance.

Has Foster been that great? Forgive my ignorance as i havent seen all of watfords matches this season but in the ones i have he hasnt been outstanding. Okay being lobbed by another keeper may be just one example but in what i've seen of the premiership this year david james has been outstanding and cech although only fit for the last few months has been back to his world class best!

I'm slightly puzzled by all the Berbatov picks here. He seems a bit lightweight to me, very good technically but is often quiter in the games against the bigger teams.

His goal record this season is very good admittedly, but I'd be interested to know how many of those were scored in the cups against lesser opposition.

Voldo
17-04-2007, 01:14 PM
O'Shea (100% record)

Essien
Carvalho (really wanted to go with Lescott)
Vidic

Ronaldo
Fabegas (11 assists in the league)

In the live games I've seen on telly - and granted, that's only a couple - he's been a one-man army. In the Chelsea cup game where Spurs went 3-1 up he was sensational, and Jol taking him off turned the game on its head. And granted, it's difficult to fully grasp a players' talents from highlights, but he's scored some wonderful goals, spearheaded their line well and looked like the complete all-round forward from what I've seen. He'd walk into the Liverpool and Arsenal starting line-ups and would be great foil for Rooney at ManUre.

Just like Ronaldinho for Barca, I often feel Ronaldo is best for Utd (and Portugal in the WC) when he's on the left, cutting inside onto his right and being a direct threat on goal. But Ronaldo isn't bad on his left peg, either. Bentley has a sweet right foot.

Dunno if they have subs in the team of the year, but what the hell.

I remember Mark Lawrenson explaining once how the Liverpool players used to 'vote' for the PFA awards. He was saying it was a 5 minute job after training, when the PFA rep would gather everyone round and ask for suggestions, e.g. 'who does everyone think was the best goalie this year?' - someone pipes up 'Shilton' - 'he'll do' - and they all write down 'Shilton' on the form.

His point was that block voting was rife and there was very little thought put into it.

I'm sure it's all very different these days though, I can imagine the likes of Roi Ferdinand must spend weeks agonising over the decisions they have to make...in between shopping for Bentleys, playing computer games and such like.
