The machine has now had it's territory lock out broken, meaning you can now play US games on a JAP machine.

A Jap machine can be yours for only 179 quid !!!

US Star Wars rogue leader will be available in the UK this week !!!!

Happy days.

Not sure what to get. PS2 looks like its games are picking up with the release of GTA3 and GT3. Also Metal Gear Solid 2 and ISS Pro are looking very good too. And you can pick up the console for £199

Never too sure about buying foreign consoles - I always think its better to wait for the English release. Have you had any problems with yours Paf?

No problems whatsoever............. sturdy little beast. Highly reccomend it. The simple mod changes the bios into English language.

I bought a PS2 ten days ago and am a tad disappointed. The main reason for purchasing it was its built in DVD player. The games I’ve played so far have been ok but nothing special to catch my eye.

All these console discussions are a load of rubbish really. Surely it all depends on the games available.

GTA3 on the PS2 is the best game ever made, bar none. As mentioned GT3 is also a fantastic racer.

However, the big one, Pro Evolution Soccer comes out in a bout 10 days, and after that, there can only be one winner.

I've also been using the PS2 for it's DVD player. It's fine. Mark, go out and buy Grand Theft Auto 3. Might even keep you out of the pub for a while!

ive had my PS2 since febuary this year, and i have only brought 1 game (GT3). i am disappointed too . i use it as a DVD player mainly, and i have this memory card that lets me play region 1 DVD's on it. just ordered swordfish as it goes.:)

ISS does look good and that will be my second game.

How ridiculous. That's like saying the DVD player is crap cuz you only have one DVD which you don't like!

Any machine is only as good as the software you buy for it!

They do update consoles and fix problems with them before they come to England so Japanese concoles are not always the best to get. Do you know if this chip will play British games as well? And how much it costs to ship

The PS2 DVD playback is fine, but compared to a decent standalone player it is bobbins.

Ok, question. I have a chipped PS1 with scores of dodgy copied games. I have been thinking of buying a PS2 since GT3 came out on it. Now, will a PS2 play my dodgy copies of Ps1 games, if not are chips available for PS2?

Anyone?

07-11-2001, 07:28 PM
You can get better quality DVD's on a Standard DVD player yeah. Of course you can. But the PS2 is fine and tthe quality is still superb with the sound lso being crisp. Especially if you buy and surround sound system for it. I think most people would prefer to get the PS2.

I imagine most people will prefer the Panasonic DVD player that happnes to also play Gamecube software. A far better way of doing it. Rather than bolting on a two bob non RGB DVD player, they started with the DVD player and then added GC software support.

Kevin T

Pray tell, do the films have better storylines on standalone DVD players?

As for the games, some of the releases at the moment are bringing to PS2 into it's own.

In my case, the PS2 had to be bought in time for PES which looks set to be the best footy game ever!

In an office with a games room the n64 was the best console of all time. Four player Mario Kart and Goldneye to name but two.

If you sit in a bedsit and play fantasy elf star worlds 8 then a Ps1 is the way to go.

£99 from Richer sounds for a basic out the box multi-region DVD
player (which is all the PS2 is - but without multi-region unless
you buy the necessary add-on's !).

Sorry - but the PS2 is cack .. Nintendo are onto a winner with the gamecube (which all of us that have dreamcasts will be buying no doubt ;) )

I think you can as you can buy copied games for it. You need the right equipment for it though. I'm not going to do this though as I'll probably mess the whole machine up while putting the chip in. I like buying the originals anyway.

PS, I have no doubt the Gamecube will once again prove to be a complete waste of marketing money by Nintendo. The PS2 will be a better bet for games over the next year or so and the X-Box will totally blow it away. Always thought Nintendo were a company who consistenly waste the potential of their machines and I don't see that changing even for the Gamecube.

Paul, I never played Gran Turismo 2, but GT3 is basically the same game as the original but with more realistic (and they are good) graphics.

Not sure I'd buy a PS2 to play it, especially if I'd only just off loaded one.

Goldeneye wasnt the only one, it was just the top of the class. Try 1080 Snowboarding, Turek, the kart racing, Formula 1, F-Zero-X. The only category the PS was better at was fighting games like Tekken.

Nintendo had it all - brand awareness, top quality machine and games, and lost it because of their arrogance and failure to market it both to the public and third party developers. I dont think they'll be making the same mistake again but its hard to catch up now.

Yeah, Double Dragon rocked. I used spend hours in the local Kebab Shop playing that, also Shinobi was another.
I'm gonna stick to the PS1 for a while, there are still good games coming out Syphon Filter 3 etc. PS2's time will come (although MSG2 could sway me earlier.) For Mario Kart read Crash Team racing for Goldeneye read Quake II. PS1 was and still is the daddy!
I had a speccy 48K with seperate cassete loader and a two blank tapes with about 20 games on each. It used to take me hours to find and load a game in the middle!!! Wonderboy, Manic Miner, Matchday I & II, Paperboy, Striker..... those were the days.

You can already get an imported Gamecube for less than a UK PS2 Kev.

On the subject of games ... hats of to Nintendo, they've done their work properly this time and a lot of the big guns are signed up to develop.

EA and Capcom are signed up. Fifa 2002 is due on the Gamecube and the next two Resident Evil games are exclusive to the Nintendo platform.
On top of that, there are numerous Sega titles also due.

Expect ISS too as Konami are already a licencee and have ISS Gameboy Advance due out soon.

Kevin T
08-11-2001, 02:45 PM
Yeah well FIFA games are universally accepted as rubbish in comparison too Pro Evolution, and you can bet that the ISS games will be the handiwork of the same developers who did the game for N64 and the original PS2 one, which again, were crap.

arussell
08-11-2001, 02:55 PM
As the newer ISS game was developed by a different team again - I doubt that the people who worked on the PS2 version, will work on it (proof yet again that PS2 games are crap if you needed any ;) )

I have a PS2, and it kicks ass.

FIFA2k2 is cr@p...I rented it out from Blockbuster, and played it for (at most) 2 hours. It's supposed to have a new "improved passing system" and "crispier graphics" which, in all honesty, is bollox. The passing system is difficult to master...and the graphics haven't changed from the last version.

PES sounds like it will thrash every other footy game...it really does look stunning. Oh, and:

ISS Pro Evolution (1&2) were developed by KCET, whereas ISS Pro for PS2 was developed by KCEO...which was the cr@p port from the N64.

I'm affraid to say that Nintendo will get the crap version again, with KCEO heading the development:

Konami presented it's line-up for Nintendo´s Game Cube for the first time at the TGS, including a new version of ISS from Konami CE Osaka (KCEO), creators of the excellent N64 ISS series. A winter sports sim, ESPN International Winter Sports was also announced.

Here's some official blurb for Pro Evolution Soccer

Formally known as ISS Pro in Europe and Winning Eleven is Japan, the next in the series of Konami C.E. Tokyo's acclaimed football games will be named Pro Evolution Soccer when the title launches on PS2 later this year. (name was changed to differentiate from the KCEO ISS version)

What's in a name? Under any other name, Pro Evolution Soccer would still play the sweetest. Import reviews of Winning Eleven 5 have been incredible, it received 9/10 in Edge and P2, and got 95% in PSi2.

Anticipation of Pro Evolution Soccer is high; the game is set to wipe the floor with the opposition when it hits Europe. By exploiting the technology of the PlayStation 2, Pro Evolution Soccer delivers an even more realistic gaming experience and will be, without doubt, the most advanced, entertaining and challenging football game ever made.

You'll be eating your words soon, unless you're a straight up RPG/FPS fan.

The PS2 has got some monster games on the way, that by all accounts, could not be achieved on the PC - Devil May Cry, Jak and Daxter, Pro Evo Soccer, Baldurs Gate:DA (quite different from the PC Baldurs Gate), among so many others.

From what I've seen so far, Pro Evolution Soccer is stunning game to look at, and by all accounts, should improve upon it's predecessors on the PSX play wise, and has even improved on the Japanese predecessor that it is built upon, Winning Eleven 5. If you like playing footy games a lot, then this is it.

Wanna let me in on where you can get an imported cube for that little?

Although, I'm not entirely convinced that Nintendo have signed up the right people.
- Resident Evil is a bit past its sell-by (if you played Code Veronica, you'll see why)
- Konami may produce an ISS game, but it'll be the Perfect Striker derived series, not the Evolution series that they produce (I think, but don't quote me, that Sony has a share in Pro Evo Soccer's developers KCET).

EA always provide nice big sales though, although they offer little for the 'real' gamer that the Gamecube will mainly appeal to.

Of course, they do always have Mr Miyamoto to fall back on...and if he pulls out another piece of his genius, then I will be willing to eat a print out of this post.

It's Star Wars. You fly an Xwing, you blow up stuff. You get to fly round the legs of an imperial walker and harpoon it's legs. If your really good you get to take out Darth Vaders X-Wing and shoot at the rebels.....

The graphics are excellent, the sound is Dolby Prologic II and if you've got HDTV it runs in progressive scan.

It really is very good fun. I've only played it a couple of times, so I'll have to reserve judgement on it's long term appeal.

All well and good, but the screen shots don't really show how the game looks when you are actualy playing it do they!?

I actually like the FIFA series, as long as you play it on the hardest level. The best thing about it is the fact you can recreate the whole Palace team. Is this an option on ISS anyone?

You could create your own players on the old one - not sure if you can do it in the new one, I would assume so.

I used to love Fifa and couldn't understand why everyone kept going on about ISS, but I had only played the N64 version. After buying it for my playstation (When I took FIFA 2001 back for being no different to 2000), I realised what all the fuss is about.

ISS is to football games what CM is to management simulators - Absolutely brilliant!

On the N64 you could change the nmes of your players and you could also do it on PES on the ps1 so I expect you can do it on this too. I thought ISS on the N64 was well good. It was by far the best football game around at the time, it's even better than the ISS on the playstation 2 now.

I've seen a playing demo of PES. The game play is very similar to ISS Pro Evo 2 and looks stunning.

Fifa has always had the edge on appearance, sound, and Player names etc. The problem is, in comparison, it plays crap.

And as for that ISS game on the N64, it was terrible.

By the way, you can't to my knowledge edit player names on ISS Pro Evo 2 or indeed the new PES.

If your into changing players names, and editing teams, get This is Football 2002. Whilst the gameplay is not that good, you get first division teams, and can edit kits/players. The stats are a little dodgy though. They've still got Fraser Digby in goal!

Kev...how good is Amazon at delivering? I've bought alot of stuff from Jungle.com, but they always seem to deliver things a couple of days late, even when it states "delivered on day of release".

Omen, I have done, and I agree, it does look amazing. BUT, they are pre-rendered backgrounds, they're static. It's exactly the same game as the old PSX version, just with higher res backgrounds/models. Almost any developer can do that these days.

The game was big stuff 4 years ago, but it's all been done a lot better since - and however pretty the graphics are, if they haven't improved the gameplay mechanics of it, it's just not going to cut it in my opinion.

Apart from that, I don't know if I could bring myself to have to wander round and find any more keys/pass cards/doorknobs.

If you want to see a stunning, puzzle based game, have a look at ICO on the PS2, which should be out in january over here.

Whilst everyone else w4nks themselves into a fury over the Gamecube and the PS2, I am still enjoying playing on my Dreamcast, in my opinion, one of the finest consoles ever created.

I have recently rediscovered the fun to be had with Marvel vs Capcom 2 multi-player action. I am also currently playing Sega Sports Tennis 2002, Bomberman Online and NBA 2k2. Awesome.

I got a Dreamcast on the cheap a few months ago to sit alongside my PSX, and have to agree. Virtua Tennis - even now - is possibly the best two player game ever, and if you want a fighting game with a difference which is still damn good, check out Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Yep, UFC is an awesome game, the presentation of the fighters is great, and once you learn all the grapples and stuff, it is wicked 2 player fun. However, I have never played a better beat em up than Marvel vs Capcom 2. The intensity and speed cannot be beaten with your three tagable characters constantly in and out of the action, and the absolutely incredible special moves. The stage 7 boss fills almost the entire screen and is incredibly tough to beat even in easiest mode.

Virtua Tennis 2 is also a great improvement on VT1.

I have a dreamcast with abou 8 games...Played it quite a bit but since then the PS2 has come out. Last time I played on my DC must have been about 7 months ago. I have Virtua Tennis and admit. Great game. Can't wait for the new one (Tennis 2K) to come out on the playstation. Can't be bothered with my Dreamcast at all anymoreso if anyone wants to buy it for about £75, let me know.

I got hold on Marvel V Capcom 2 while working at Whereits.at, only problem is it didn't have any instructions so I don't know how to tag or anything - knowing any good online move lists you could help me out with?

Biohazard is what Resi Evil is known as in Japan. It's called 'Reborn' because it's the first Resident Evil game, but with nicer graphics.

Ace Combat 4 is lovely to look at, apart from when you get a bit close to the ground, when it all looks a bit flat and boring. But, you can't have it all.

I've come back home off the piss, but what the hell....

GTA3 is being touted as one of the greatest games ever made by some people (not me, I love it, but it's not quite that good). One day, it will be surpassed in some way, but it'll take a lot of work to do so.

oh, and any cricket games?

Rugby 2001 was good when I played it on the demo. Cricket games, EA Cricket 2002 is out this month...go to www.easportscricket.com (http://www.easportscricket.com), even though it hasn't been updated in ages. This looks pretty impressive. The old versons of this game on the PS and the PC were crap but this one might be quite good as it has the two lead programmers from Brian Lara cricket also leading the programming for this.

Yeah, it does improve quality, but if you intend to watch a DVD through it, make sure that you also buy the Sony remote - for some reason, with the Scart lead, on many PS2s, DVD playback comes out a bit (well very)green.

The remote has a DVD driver update with it, which will fix the problem.

It's something Sony deliberately put in the machine in an attempt to stop copying.

Also - the Gamecube is available for £178 from Lik Sang to answer an earlier question about price (and that's a modified version that plays Jap and U.S games).

In responce to RANDOM, I did'nt know about the sony remote fixing the green cast on the DVD, as my current TV has two AU settings. The first postion gives me clear colour, cast free picture, while the second has a warmer feel to the screen for playing games.(but does have a green cast on DVD )not bad for a Phillips TV 8 years old!
