You dont really need stopping power as a sniper, would much rather have overkill and a sub machine gun to defend myself as a fight my way to a sniper position or if i hear someone approaching

When I play as sniper I tend to go with claymores, stopping power and iron lungs (obviously).
Claymores I set around myself so even if the enemy doesn't die, they at least alert me to their approach - so I can get ready to knife them or just run. I'm not a great sniper accuracy wise so stopping power helps me get the 1-shot kills when I'm not getting headshots. I find there are rarely any situations when you can't get into a good sniping spot unscathed seeing as in most maps your team tends to 'hold' one side of the map anyway.

I only tend to fire my sniper if i think im going to get a headshot, I like having the sub to defend myself with if need be or if the sniper spot i was hoping for is taken

I love knifing snipers. Claymores are easy to jump over. I also like standing behind someone hiding and using the rocket laucher on them.

I figured out one of my problems last night, hopefully it was just an isolated problem. I noticed I had some serious lag. I finally paid attention to the kill cam. I noticed that many times when I was shooting, I would get 6 or 7 shots off before I died. But on the kill cam, I would get one or none off. So basically, to the other players I'm just standing there asking to be shot. No idea if that's all the time or how to fix it if that is a permanent problem.

Yeah to be honest i mostly think its the kill cam not working properly. Sometimes i will throw a few bullets into someone say with an RPD and i will know it hits them due to the sound it makes. but on the kill cam it shows me not firing. It cant be the easiest thing in the world to process so i doubt its always 100% acurate in the middle or a chaotic match

Got up to Level 50 last night. I'm doing much better now. What setups do ya'll use? I'm playing Headquarters almost exclusively now. Right now for the big maps, I use a P90 with 3x frags, stopping power and deep impact. I'm a big fan of getting to the HQ first, and the P90 lets me sprint for a long time. The problem, of course, is its not very powerful, hence me beefing it up with stopping power and deep impact.
For the smaller maps, I use the M60E4 with the same perks. This gun has way more power, so I can just spray into a room, thru walls, to clear it out. I've read online lots of people don't like the M60E4, but I've found it works real well for me. Of course, on Shipment, I add in Martydom. Have to have that for that map.
I've tried using overkill to have a P90 and M60E4 at the same time, to get the best of both worlds, but I ended up getting killed trying to switch back and forth.

Trying to level some of the different guns at the moment, just unlocked the AK-74U. The M60E4 is a beast but recoils like a mother••••er and the iron sights are shit.
My preferred set-up as standard is:
AK-47 (either red dot or sileneced depending on map)
3 Stun
Stopping power
Steady Aim
Sniping i use:
M4AOE3 (till i get the R700 or Barrett 50 cal at least)
Claymore
Stopping Power
Iron Lungs

Bleedin ell, reading some of these posts explains why I'm getting dicked on whenever I play online games!
Its taken me over a month to get anywhere halfway usefull. Im still lucky to finish a round with more than 10-12 kills.
Some people are insanely good, especially on the 360 pad which i can aim for shit with...

I was in exactly the same place a few weeks ago. Its just a matter of practice. (and leveling up your weapons and perks doesn't hurt) It seems to take twice as long to gain XP in something like free-for-all versus Headquarters. So, I've been playing HQ this whole time to build up my XP and unlock all the weapons and perks. If you get really good, Search and Destroy can get you XP even quicker.

some guns have a slight auto aim to them. But its not like single player where all you do is press the L trigger and they are aimed up. I would say i probably notice once or twice in every hour of gaming online where my aimer might pull across a little as i am trying to shoot someone who is moving

P90 / Red Dot Sight is the best primary weapon IMO.
Also a tip for going round corners where the enemy potentially might be:
Flash bomb, grenade before going round corners especially if you think you can hear footsteps before going round a corner then you should really start firing whilst strafing from left to right or vice versa into it. Oh and DON'T crouch as you will go round the corner slower giving your enemy an easier shot at you.
Another top tip is when you spawn find a good hiding place there and then say stuff like "good work" and "keep it up boys" to your fellow soldiers whilst they try to keep the enemy at bay. This is known as the 'Prince Harry' technique :)

I would say the best 4 weapons for a new player would be (in order)
1.M16A4 (Very effective at long range also 2 good shots and they are down)
2.G36C (Good all round, decent auto fire rate and still usefull at distance)
3.MP4 (again like G36C)
4.MP5 (for smaller maps Showdown, Wetworks, Vacant, Shipment)
some of my friend who were new to the game found they also liked the RPD although the iron sight on it is horrible so you will want to get a Red Dot Sight on it ASAP
Try not to run though the middle of levels, stick to the outside and try to gain the odd vantage point. Make sure you check your radar alot to see which direction the red dots are popping up.
Also you could "camp" a bit i.e. find a nice place where you can see lots of the enemy run past but they might not be able to see you very well and pick them off with the M16A4 and stopping power. Some might call you a camper and flame you for it but if you are new its the only way you are going to compete lol. Also be aware then when you shoot you show up as a red dot on the map (unless you use a silencer). So only shoot if you expect to kill them. Try to aviod random shooting as it will give away your position. One thing that i notice alot of new players do wrong is as you run/walk around keep your aimer at head/chest height and follow it round corners, this so if someone pops up you already have them aimed up. Also if they are shooting you with something low in the way i.e. car, barrier when they start hitting you lie down and reload. By the time you come back up again they will probably be reloading and you can take them out :) Other then that learn the maps, surroundsing and hot spots that people always goto on certain maps. Often building or high points. Oh yeah and of course work on your stick control/aim and reactions :)

If you guys have reach overkill perk I recommed G36c and Automatic shotty! best combo ever! definatley if you play HQ, my record is 125 kills 34 deaths on shipment.
thinking about starting a clan off on the PS3 interested, it will be just for fun, call it CPFC!

Another important consideration is what game you are playing; Free For All, Headquarters, etc. If you want to level up quickly to increase your choice of guns, play Headquarters. Even if you don't do well on a level you can increase your XP much quicker than other games by having your team do well.

Right now, I'm playing with an AK-74u and enjoy it pretty well. Its crap at the long ranges but my style in HQ is to always run for the HQ, so I'm usually in close-quarters and that AK-74u has some nice power at short range.

I hate campers, I've tried it and it's boring, I like running round the whole map trying to figure out where the the enemies are but what HQ it is and get them from behind, normally get about 3 kills then die! sometimes get lucky and you get your helicopter with it!

The way you said it made it sound like, just staying in an obscure corner and just waiting till someone came round. No problem if people are out in the 'open.' Not to mention that it's just no fun staying in one spot and waiting anyway.

I don't mind campers, I know they're never gonna win and they are an easy kill next time since they don't generally move and after they get killed go back to the same spot. I was playing HQ in Shipment last night and there was actually a doof that camped in that trailer right in the middle of the map every time, easy kill.

its not a bad way of observing the game if you are new and practicing your aiming without getting killed every 3 seconds. But yes it would be boring if everyone camps but you are never going to get a big score just camping

There is a new update out today for it. When an airstrike or Granade Kills you it will follow the path of the granade or missle. Also when you are just spectating you can go in to first person.

Something really weird happened playing last night. My team in HQ only had 4 players, nothing odd there. But the other team had 7. Needless to say, we got wiped out. Also, playing on Ambush, saw a new HQ location I've never seen before. It was in a 2-story building at the most south part of the map. It had 2 doorways in thru the front. Didn't get a good look because I died as we captured it and forgot to ever go back.

I havent noticed any difference on the update, only that i can see the airstrike that killed me...

It was only that if you had the P90, started running, then swapped to your pistol you could sprint for longer. You can still sprint the same with P90.
I'm not 100% with this one but i also think you werent able to run as far with a LGM when you should be able to sprint the same distance as with say a sub machine gun but just slower.

Anybody have this for the PS3? I don't think that update patch did anything but give the grenade's eye view of a kill. I still get host leaving and get kicked back to the main screen and you can't mute anybody, either.

I've got thins on PS3 and I can mute people. during play press select and choose the people there who(or is it whom? I now thingk whom) you want to mute.

Had my first 100 kill session of Headquarters last night, 101 kills and 48 deaths. On Shipment, of course. I found that its better to have an airstrike than helicopter on that map. I would get 5 kills, die, then hit the airstrike right after respawning, usually getting 5 kills right away. I brought in a helicopter a couple of times, but it got shot down before it really had a chance to kill anybody.
And to the person that likes using the G3, I said I needed the full auto for comfort. I have turned around. I use the G3 with a silencer and have had great results. I switch between G3 and M16 both with silencers, depending on the map. Its funny I can shoot right into 3 different enemies with my silencer and they have no idea what's going on. If I come up from behind (which I like doing), I can pick them off one at a time and they never even turn around.

For silenced guns i prefer the GS3C for Ranged Maps and the P90 (now i finally unlocked it) for close quaters. Starting to get better but i still need more practice...

Is it true that you can't play against computer opposition in multi player mode? I was round a mate's house the other day and we wanted to be on the same team vs two computer generated, and we couldn't work out how to do it.

I enjoyed it but I was all fingers and thumbs (in the wrong places!!!) as I had had a few beers and could not get my head around the COD4 buttons I kept pressing LB to sprint and right stick to aim.
I must say though COD4 is as good as it gets for online right now I reckon.

Ahhh got a 23 kill streak last night, soo frustrating as my record is 23 and has been for a few months I started off Sniping and managed to work up about 12/13 kills. But by then people were onto me, so i managed to kill a couple who came up to kill me with my pistol, then picked up a G36C and went on the rampage, mowed a few more down then found a nice little spot on ambush to kill people who were going for B. I got to 20ish and realised i only had a few bullets left!!, i used them up managing to get 3 kills but then i was stuck with no weapon what so ever!!. So ihad to take a chance, ran out of my spot across the map with only my knife in hand but then managed to pick up someones full loaded AK-47 with a red dot sight!! what a result. So there i was 23 kills so far and ready to mow someone down with my AK for a record 24th. Then without warning.... Airstrike i was right in the middle of it with no cover, I had no chance soo frustrating.
Both of my 23 kill streaks have been on Ambush it has to be my fave map along with Countdown and maybe Backlot. Overall had a really good night on there last night. went 18-2 sniping on crossfire, 25-3 on District ect! really helped my K/D ratio as it had slipped from 1.61 to 1.59 from letting my friends play lol.

I love Ambush too. My favorite move is when the headquarters is in the top story of that building next to the main road, I run up the pile of cars and totally surprise all the bad guys up there. Its also a good map for the rocket launcher. If you can secure the sewer, whip the rocket launcher out and wait at one end of the tube. The first sign of the enemy, fire. Usually 2 bad guys will be out there flattened.
Btw, I hate Countdown. No matter where I stand I'm always on the wrong side of the barriers and the enemy has an easy kill on me.

you've got to do some "camping" to score well in the game. It is boring though so best to mix it up. Flanking the enemy by running round like a mad man with a RPD or sub machine gun can work just as well as camping sometimes, just more risk of being killed especially as you increase the chances of being snuk up on from behind or the side.

lol what one did you use? The only one i could think which is a bit sneaky is ifyou manage to jump into that balcony near the top of the map.

nope. it's a better place than that. the top of the map is awful for sniping
in terms of sniper rifles the best one is the first one you get. once you've learnt to snipe properly by using all the guns on the first way through, on the second prestige 'cycle' i looked at the stats for the M4OA3 and it's technically the best on the game. it's brilliant.

I never camp get bored easily, but since i got relatively good i've been desperately trying to get more kills than deaths. Considering i was nearly 1300 behind when i started caring, i'm now only 500 behind and doing well.
Need to get a few more games on Shipyard always seem to boost it by about 30 on there...

Its not of your good at it. I went 18-2 up there last night. There is a few decent places down the bottom to snipe, I wouldn't call them "perfect" though as it depends on if your enemy works out where you are. I have got all the acheivments for the first Sniper and the RV700. I'm using the M21 now and really liking it, hardly any recoil, semi automatic and still very powerful with stopping power or of couse a headshot ;)

Despite what the internet might tell you (including some “official” sources), the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare variety map pack has NOT been delayed until the 10th. As of right now we’re pushing certification for an on-time release for April 3rd or 4th. As of right now though, I’m being told that it’s a good chance it will be released worldwide (except for Japan) tomorrow night / early-Friday morning

If the only reason Sony users arent getting this map pack until 21 days after 360 is cos they are updating the store then Sony really need their heads seeing to. I'm sure alot more people would rather have the map packs early then some dodgy PSN store re-design which probably wont affect much anyway. I mean the PSN store as it is doesn't exactly blow my socks off but it does what it needs

I have a feeling its either programming issues with the PS3 or a plain manila envelope behind the Infinity Ward dumpster from Microsoft as the reason there is a gap.
Managed to swap out my 60GB HDD last night for a 250GB. Apart from stripping the heads of the screws on the HDD cage, it was pretty easy.

I plugged in a 2GB flash drive and used the backup utility and that managed to save all my saves and profiles and settings. I have to re-install games and redownload demos but that's not that big of a deal. The little lady likes watching her Japanese TV shows when she works out, so we've been copying them over to the PS3 after she downloads them, that's why I needed the extra room. Oh, and in case I buy games that require these 5GB installs too, I guess.

first impressions are good, "Creek" is especially impressive. quite vast Russian outdoors with a stream, waterfall and a small cave system to explore... not the mention ridiculous vantage points for sniping! the others are good too, "Killhouse" is a modified training hall like when you first start the game, "Broadcast" has many corridors to explore and toilet cubicles to camp in if you so desire lol and "Chinatown" is quite good too... well worth the 800 points...

The PS3 players should start on a level playing field. But i might have to check out a few youtube vids a week before the maps come out on PS3, get to know a few good spots ;)

They need to do something with prestige - like each prestige level you get to keep a perk or weapon. Otherwise it's pretty pointless.

Which is why i only prestiged once!! However, you do get something every time you prestige! a new shiny badge :) lol. Plus the oppertunity to earn more XP points. I don't have half as many XP points as i could of by now as I have done 95% of the challenges.

PES is the weaker game this year, compared to FIFA, and UEFA 2008 is out in a week which is simply an improvement on FIFA, and a mix of 'PES and FIFA.'
I bought Halo and COD4 with my 360, and played Halo for a few days, but since I played COD I haven't touched Halo. Don't buy into the hype.

So the new maps for PS3 are due on April 24th for North America, not till May 1st for Europe. (but I'm sure everybody here has a US account set up, right? :p)
The US maps may not be compatible with the UK version. Not fact, just supposition.

HELP!!!
Was playing last night, paused the game for approx 2 hours (prob shouldnt have done that) when resumed the game the sound of the gun fireing stopped. I turned it off and back on again and now it doesnt recognise any games/DVD's im gutted.
Ive spoken to Sony but as im at work i need to be next to the console, but from the guys experience it sounds like a fault with the Laser in the disk drive.
He told me that all my ratings are saved online (Thank God). As i asked him about formatting the drive, which ill probably try.
Anyone got any suggestions????????

Yes everything can be saved to en external hard drive or USB pen just go onto the data, press triangle and press copy, then it will ask where you want to copy it to :)

Yeah i like the way in china town there are soo many little ways into buildings, even a DVD shop to run through lol.
I managed to find out how to get on one of those roofs on creek in my second game, nice to find these things out early as if you manage to get into a game where everyone is new you have an advantage :)

Had a great session last night. Played S&D exclusively and was regularly pulling in 10+ kills to the 3 or so deaths. (of course, I also had the occasional clanger) But what made it good was I was able to be on the same team with a dude for a good 15 matches. We never got disconnected or cut off or anything. He was always talking tactics and keeping the team informed of what was happening. Marked change from the usual blather and audio feedback.

Know what you mean. Me and my flatmate go on team tactical and are constantly talking tactics and it makes such a difference when you get someone on your team who knows what they're doing.

finally reached level 55, been offered prestige mode. Is it worth giving up all weapons and perks earned so far...

That would be really nice. To have an incentive to move up in prestige is probably needed. I hate being Level 14 or whatever in my 6th Prestige and run into a whole team of Level 55 players in 1st Prestige.
I wonder how much work Infinity Ward will be doing on this now. They've probably already started on COD6.

I can't seem to set up my wireless connection, it keeps telling me there was a DNS error. So for the time being guys I guess you won't get shot to smithereens by yours truly :(

I seem to remember reading an extremely detailed post about fixing connection issues in COD4 but forgot where it was. Anybody know?

Is this a connection issue with COD4 rather than the PS3 in general?
If you aren't able to get a connection to the net through your dashboard then you won't get one once you have booted the game up. Best solution is to jump on the PS forums and ask for some advice or phone the helpline up and im sure they'll talk you through any connection issues.

Playing a great game right now. Got some 12 year old American guy giving it the large one. He's doing running commentary and coming out with some hilarious one liners. To be fair he's ••••••• good.
