View Full Version : Madden 2002/BBS Team - Choose our stadium

Being the saddo that I am I tend to prefer games in which you can in names of friends/enemies, etc. Thus having just got Madden 2002 I'm making up a BBS team.
You can customise pretty much everything, i.e. uniforms, field design, etc., except the stadium. For that you have to pick one of pre-existing ones.
Pick a stadium and I'll make it our "home". ;)
I've put in the following as options:
1) The best open air stadiums, e.g. Pro Player Stadium & Invesco Field.
2) Stadiums to cover all allegiances shown on the BBS, e.g. Lambeau Field & Soldier Field.
3) A few token domes.
BTW if you've got a preferred number and skill (notice the careful swerve away from using the word "position" ) let me know and I'll put you there.

I voted for the Sun Devil Stadium, simply because I like the name.
If you've got room for me in your squad I would like No. 17, and to be a kicker. :p

Punter or placekicker?
I think placekicker (glory boys, score all the points) might go quite quickly, but if you'd like it, it's yours. :)

It has to be the TWA Dome in honour of Lombardo.:)

Gloryboy was the way I was thinking! Placekicker if available, quite happy to be an anonymous punter if not.
No surprises where my vote went! Seriously though, can anyone in truth claim there's a better stadium anywhere? Think about it - it's seen more championships than any other in football, it's community-owned, it has abundant history, Lombardi prowled the sidelines, and it has a nickname (The Frozen Tundra) and a traditional name (after Curly Lambeau, first coach - or was he?) instead of a faceless corporate identity (City of Denver, hang your head in shame). The only one that comes close is Soldier Field, but those guys aren't winners! And the only really great modern one is Raymond James, but.... (see above!)
Tony - you need to install me as #23 (of course) a hard-hitting yet athletically-gifted free-safety in the Darren Sharper mould. Have you read Madden's book (can't remember which one) where he devotes an entire chapter to detailing what football numbers various celebrities should wear, and why certain numbers mean certain things? Genius.
Nice shot of Pro Player (disqualified due to re-naming) I presume that's one of your own?
And where was The Vet? ;)

Nope, haven't finished the film yet. It's a thought though. :p
Who put in the second vote for Soldier Field? I don't want to play 3rd down Wide Receiver where you can get frostbite on the sidelines. ;)

Only women and young children get frostbite...and i guess i have an advantage since i am from infdiana as well..but the cold never hurt anyone who could be considered a man!!!

I dont really know the stadiums yet so I voted out of loyalty :D
Hmm I guess I would be a wide receiver as I was a winger in rugby.. If thats all taken I'll be the guy marking the WR (is that the linebacker?)
Steve Phoenix (The Demolition Man - after the movie)
Oh yeah #77 please.

Cornerback cover the WR...linebackers sometimes cover them on zone coverages and corner blitzes...the linebacker is normally responsible for the running back coming out of the backfield as well :)

Excellent - all the Fins together! All we need now is for BJ to come along and then Pro Player should have a deciding third vote.
Steve - didn't pick you as a Bourque fan (at least I guess that's why you picked 77). The NFL has pointless numbering rules, but I'll see if the game will let me bypass those.
Will try and compose an updated roster at some point today.

Right, the stunning roster currently looks like this:
Coach: Dave (naturally - ultimately he's the boss)
OFFENSE
Palace, #??, C
Strathclyde Eagle, #83, WR
Steve in Phoenix, #77, WR
Benzhiyi, #87, WR
DEFENCE
jlmatthews, #??, DE
g23, #23, FS
SPECIAL TEAMS
Smurph, #17, K
Lots of spaces there. Any nominations for other positions?
Didn't Kev once say he has a namesake who plays for the Browns?
And the one position we seem to be well stocked in is Wide Receivers. So I guess we're going to be running the "Run and Shoot" offense then? ;)
BTW, player number rules are as follows:
Quarterbacks, Punters and Kickers: 1-19
Running Backs and Defensive Backs: 20-49
Centres: 50-59 (60-79 also allowed)
Guards and Tackles: 60-79 (it doesn't say it, but I've also seen some Guards wearing 50-59)
Wide Receivers: 80-89 (10-19 also allowed)
Tight Ends: 80-89
Defensive Linemen: 60-79 & 90-99
Linebackers: 50-59 & 90-99

You know damn well im # 69 :)
Offense:
LT Les Butler, #72, stalwart book-end tackle
LG Matov, #63, heavyweight interior lineman
C Palace, #00 (as in Jim Otto) Should let you. If not, #66
RG Kev T, #61, see Matov
RT Murry(a), #68, see Butler
QB Sunny Fan, #6, cerebral, innovative.
HB Eddie McGoldrick's 'tache, #32, slippery, daylight runner
FB Neil The Eagle, #45, bruising big back (think Okoye)
WR Strathclyde, #83 (after who?)
WR Steve in Phoenix, #77 (Lyle Alzado!!!! Hope he looks good in Orange)
WR Benzhiyi, #87
(there are no tight ends on the BBS, obviously!)
Defense (4-3):
DE jlmatthews, #69 (dumb number for a rush end, if you ask me)
DT James, #96, run-stuffer
DT Jaffa, #99, the buck stops here
DE pistike, #94, speed rusher off the edge
WLB SIKO, #54, lurks in the open-field
SLB tmjwat, #55, wily veteran
MLB Samo*, #51, madman in the Brian Cox mould
FS g23, #23
SS BHiG, #58, big hitter
CB Jim Cannon's moustache, #21, tight coverage
CB Daniel Nash, #31, tenacious, good in zone
Special Teams:
P Feather, #2, because he's a punter (geddit?)
PK Smurph, #17
LS Soundbyter, #50 (it all appears to come from his arfe)
RS Tak, #22, elusive, quick-thinking and hard to pin down
Gunners: sexyrazor, e-girl, goldfish, lightweight

Gavin, I think we both have too much spare time. :D
Not sure I like the 3 WRs/2 RBs lineup. Makes you vulnerable if you up against someone with superb OLBs, like the... er... 1986 New Giants.
Can't we make Neil a converted RB-TE like Keith Byars used to be. Then we can run 3 WRs, a TE and a HB, a la the 1987 Redskins (Super Bowl XXII - anyone else remember the 2nd quarter? Ouch.

We gotta run something spread....we have to make the linebackers run and have to cover WRs..thats the only way...so single back and make EMT run sweeps and off tackles....the slot receivers should get some good lanes for SF to throw in..if the defense goes zone spread em out and send em deep cause they wont have help behind them if there are enough receivers out :)
And Gavin that was my # when i played..and besides who asked you:hmph: ;)
I can play TE and go both ways since i am agile and hands like glue :D

Send the receivers deep anyway, it seems to be quite easy in Madden 2002 (had a bit of a practice last night - did a 3 play, 58 yard touchdown drive in 19 seconds at the end of the half).
Addition to the team: Palace Fan in Alabama as kick returner. (Apologies, I re-watched "Forrest Gump" on Sunday).
BTW, where did that extra vote for Lambeau Field come from?

13-11-2001, 09:35 PM
I dont get the Alzado reference either
I never knew about the numbers regulation.. although I do like Bourque, 7 and 77 have been my numbers before I knew who he was.

LOL - that made my day i think :)
No way NTE has the footspeed to be a Byars (or even a Wycheck for that matter!)
It's been a long time since I played Madden football (probably the '94/'95 edition). The game always used to be set up to favour his own preferences, so bruising full-backs and 2TE sets always seemed to do well. You could never pass deep reliably either, as the INT rate was about 1 in 3.
If memory serves, Lyle Alzado used to play in #77. For those who don't know him, he was a white D-lineman of some note in the early 80s who was traded from Denver's Orange Crush defence across to Oakland where years of steroid abuse began to take their toll until his brain started leaking out through his skull. Seriously. He died, of course, but his repentant autobiography is well worth a read unless you're squeamish, and he often pops up in B-movies of that era.
jl I really don't want to hear that you go both ways, are agile, and have sticky hands! No offence, but you're better off keeping that to yourself!

27 roster spots filled, and we don't have a single tight end yet! This team will probably be frighteningly like the Detroit Lions of the late 80s.
Notable remaining free agents include:
arussell
James Varcoe
markholmes1991
Gavin Axten (who I recall on one of the Millwall threads said he was quite a bit bloke)
Next question. Do I use real identities or BBS usernames?
If we're going to be the late 80s Lions at least we get a Barry, so that'll have to be arussell (he's about the right height, but I wouldn't vouch for the same uncanny balance and cuts). James Varcoe's eaten enough lunch to be a Nate Newton figure (think of him in the traditional Thanksgiving game walking away with the turkey as the clock winds down). With a number like 1991, Mark could be a combination TE/DE ironman, wearing 19 on offense and 91 on D. Never have anyone called Gavin on your team - they're big girls in disguise...

Which could link on nicely to another custom team I'm composing. "Brighton Scum", made up of all sorts of people I don't like.
