It was miserable in the build up but when the Scots actually started playing it was great fun.

Underestimating Peru, drawing with Iran, a drug scandal, a brilliant but futile goal from Archie Gemmill and beered up Scots in kilts flicking the V's at McLeod.

Scotland will not qualify tomorrow. Guaranteed.

I was about the same age but remember supporting Scotland enthusiastically; it was the first World Cup that I remember as a serious football fan. I clearly recall the sense of optimism around Scotland before it started and what a demoralizing blow losing to Peru was.

I don't know whether it was my youthful ignorance or a general nationwide mass-delusion but I remember expecting Scotland to breeze past Peru and it being a genuine shock when they lost 3-1. Cubillas was the star wasn't he, particularly that free-kick.

I don't know whether it was a school-night or just how late the kick-off was but I wasn't allowed to watch the Iran match (some games were in the early evening like the Peru match while others were in the small hours) but I remember listening illicitly on a radio in my bedroom and of course, once they failed to win, it was all over.

I clearly remember the Holland game too. I think it was a Sunday but definitely early evening. It was virtually meaningless at first but I think that there was a point where Scotland were right back in it (wasn't there another match being played at the same time that had an influence ?) I can still recall that goal by Gemmell though, in fact that was probably the highlight of the whole tournament for me, although like John Barnes goal at The Maracana 6 years later, it seemed so much better at the time than when you watch a replay of it later.

I've still got good memories of it. Certainly better than USA 94, the only only other World Cup without England that I recall, when Ireland's recipe of hoof-ball, bad sportsmanship and zero ambition didn't exactly inspire the neutral. At least Scotland's over-inflated opinion of their own ability and ineptitude was kind of charming.

Granted, it's a sad state of affairs when the greater and more talented nation look set to sit it out while our scruffy neighbours could well just sneak it!

Surely life is not that cruel!

Ally's Tartan Army

We're on the march wi' Ally's Army,
We're going tae the Argentine,
And we'll really shake them up,
When we win the World Cup,

'Cos Scotland is the greatest football team,
We're representing Britain,
And we're gaunny do or die,
England cannae dae it,
'Cos they didnae qualify!

We're on the march wi' Ally's Army,
We're going tae the Argentine,
And we'll really shake them up,
When we win the World Cup,
'Cos Scotland is the greatest football team

:D

What I remember most about Scotland in Argentina (apart from that awful song) is Ally McLeod's head in his hands as Peru and Iran made Scotland look like Millwall on a poor day :D

I remember the line in Trainspotting when a lad's doing the biz with a girl. He exclaims excitedly: "that was better than Archie Gemmill's goal v Holland (in WC '78)." Bet the girl was dead flattered. :D

The first WC I remember, mainly all the streamers! The political story behind it is fascinating. Read a book about it recently.

I really don't care if the feeling is not reciprocated - still want the jocks to do well tomorrow.

Hmm, no disrespect to the Argies, but I distinctly remember a dead dodgy game against a compliant Peru to qualify for the final (at the expense of Brazil), followed by another controversial game to beat the Dutch - who were the outstanding team of the tournament.
For any non-Argie spectator, the final was a dire anti-climax.

When you compare the Scots spirit, togetherness and effort to our lame crew, it is rather depressing.

The goal was not futile when he scored it. Had the score remained so then Scotland were through.

I think they needed one more actually. But your point is a fair one.

Apologies to Archie.

Probably the most memorable World Cup for me I was 8, completely addicted to the panini stickers and living in Holland, The final I remember very well I don't think I've ever been more excited/nervous/gutted watching a football match.

They needed to win by three clear goals and Gemmill's goal made it 3-1, so you are right. Holland of course, pulled one back, so it became irrelevant.

We didn't qualify for the '74 world cup either, but Scotland did.

Remember Rod Stewart released a dreadful record.Something like " O lea O lare were gonna bring the World Cup back from over there" they don't write em like that any more.I do recall England spoiling the going away party by winning 1-0 in the Home international tournament ,a certain Steve Coppell scoring the winner.
