I'm in Normandy visiting the missus' family again. Going to the preseason match between Caen and Rennes in Ouistreham on Saturday evening. Unfortunately leaving before the first home game of the season against Lyon.

Tough welcome back for Caen with Marseille and Lyon in the first two weeks.

The ran through the National last season and have a bit of cash (which is rare in L2).

With the backing of the LFP, they were planning on playing their home games in Geneva where there is a lovely state of the art stadium built for the Euros. However, UEFA have turned this down as it is another country (although that doesn't, apparently, affect Monaco), even though it is geographically the closest stadium to Thonon-ls Bains. The team will now be forced to play its home games in Annécy - a lovely town in the foothills of the Alps, but quite some way from Thonon.

They also have Nimani on loan from Monaco (good player) and ex-palace Rui Fonte on loan :)

They're going to struggle this season (le Blackpool français). They're giving a trial to Cyril Chapuis (a good young player 10 years ago who has never fulfilled his potential).
Their best player is Piocelle who came through the great Nantes ''académie''. Good luck to them.

Bonaventure Kalou is having a trial with them from today. Weren't we linked with him recently?

The article on Brest was very interesting. I hadn't appreciated how many good players had passed through there or how long it has taken them to return to grace after doing a Leeds and going bust chasing the dream. The management team there includes Corentin Martins as sporting director and other famous ex-players include David Ginola, Stéphane Guivarc'h, Bernard Lama, Paul Le Guen, Claude Makélélé and Franck Ribéry.

A couple of months back Clapham Palace (?) posted something about Brest and I listed all their famous past players. It's quite an impressive list.

Oh and in case you missed it, Blanc in his first friendly for France post the World Cup debacle has "banned" all 23 players involved in the squad.

No interference there, then.......

Which is what Franck Ribéry said to the judge concerning ...

I've heard of Planté - he used to be at ASSE as cover for Janot and he may also have been at Caen. Kermorgant played for Leicester against us last season, Laurenti was part of the OM squad a few years back, and then there's K.Diawara who was at Arsenal for a while and a host of other clubs too. He's not as old as I am but he must be getting on a bit.

First game of the new season last night.....

Cissé wins Champions Trophy for Marseille in shootout

Ex-Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Edouard Cissé struck the winning penalty against his former club as Ligue 1 champions Marseille lifted the first trophy of the season, taking the shootout 5-4 in front of a new Champions Trophy record attendance of 55,000 in Radès, Tunisia after it finished goalless after 90 minutes.
Wednesday July 28 2010

Olympique de Marseille / Paris Saint-Germain : -

French Cup holders PSG were making their fifth Champions Trophy appearance. For the fourth time it went to penalties and after this latest setback PSG have emerged victorious on a single occasion, back in 1996 when a Claude Makelele miss for Nantes gifted them the prize. The veteran skipper calmly tucked away PSG’s fifth kick here as it went to sudden death. Experienced substitute Ludovic Giuly had his kick saved by OM goalkeeper Steve Mandanda – voted man-of-the-match - low to his right and then Cissé showed his bottle to kickstart the celebrations as Marseille won the Champions Trophy on their debut appearance.

Luyindula and Lucho miss spot kicks

The shootout got off to the worst possible start for PSG as Peguy Luyindula hit the post and the ball rebounded off Mandanda’s head to safety. All of the other initial five takers scored from both sides except for OM playmaker Lucho Gonzalez. The Argentinean’s attempted “Panenka” chip down the middle of the goal was Marseille’s third spot kick and easily saved by Grégory Coupet.

PSG enjoyed the better of the opening period, frequently threatening to get in behind Marseille’s high defensive line with the movement of forwards Mevlut Erding and Peguy Luyindula a notable feature. Just before the break Luyindula fired wide when in on Steve Mandanda’s goal and shortly afterwards the OM goalkeeper excelled himself in diving in at the feet of Nêne to thwart the Brazilian.

New signings strut their stuff

Nêne, like Mathieu Bodmer, made his first start for the capital club in an official encounter. Nêne’s set-piece prowess was one of the reasons Antoine Kombouaré signed him and a left-footed corner midway through the first half could have resulted in a goal had centre-half Zoumana Camara managed to generate more power with his header.

Marseille’s new signing Cesar Azpilicueta distinguished himself with his willingness to break forward from right-back, while the young Spaniard’s prodigiously long throws were a constant source of danger, Mamadou Samassa powering a header off target from one such delivery on 25 minutes.

Diawara injury blow, Ben Arfa fireworks

Didier Deschamps left Stéphane Mbia and Gabriel Heinze back in France for pre-season training after featuring for Cameroon and Argentina respectively at the World Cup. OM’s defensive options were further reduced on the stroke of half-time as Souleymane Diawara pulled up with a thigh problem. The former Bordeaux man expects to be out for at least three weeks.

A passionate crowd reserved their biggest cheer for the introduction of Hatem Ben Arfa – a French international of Tunisian origin – on the hour. It sparked OM’s best spell of the game with Samassa, getting his chance at centre-forward with Mamadou Niang and Brandao suspended, denied by Coupet from point blank range and then Ben Arfa’s solo run culminating in a shot just wide of the upright.

Late drama

With penalties looming, Luyindula created a great chance for himself to win the game for PSG, twisting past a couple of Marseille defenders before unleashing a shot which he was unable to keep down. Seconds later OM hit the post with Coupet beaten as defender Leyti N’Diaye, on for Diawara, flicked a Taye Taiwo shot against the upright.

In a pulsating close to the game neat interplay from PSG created a chance for substitute Mateja Kezman. Fortunately for OM Vitorino Hilton was there with the saving block. With seconds left on the clock Nêne blazed over after working the shooting opportunity, cutting in from the right.

It looks like the poor man's Ile de Ré. When I stayed near Blois for a week a couple of weeks ago, the guy I was staying with was singing that regions praises. He and his family go there every year. Has it got quite a micro climate? The closest I have been to that part of the world is Angers. Ca vaut la peine d'y aller?

I seem to spend most of my time in France down nr Nice now. It's a tough job, but someones got to do it......

RIP

Not the most famous of players, Didier Wacouboué (Ivory Coast) who played for Marseille in the mid-90s (in their dark days when they were in Ligue 2) was found dead in his London home. No more details. Apparently he had to retire from football a few years ago due to a long-term illness. He was 36, no age. :(

Marseille are in a mess at the moment. Koné has gone, Ben Arfa looks like he's on the way to Newcastle, Niang wants out as does Heinze apparently. Deschamps wanted to bring in Fabiano but he was put off by the wage demands. He is now tempted by Gilardino (sp?), but thewages could be the stumbling block too.
Lyon weren't much better last night either. MOM Lloris which just goes to show. Let's see what Bordeaux get up to tonight against Montpellier who surprisingly got knocked out of Europe on Thursday aet and penalties so they should be knackered. PSG did well, but there was loads of aggro outside the ground (250 arrests). Their Ultras (the two groups on opposing sides of the political spectrum) have been banned because they often had rucks
against each other. If they were true fans, I can't see why they just go to the games as individuals. Maybe it's not as simple as that.

Last nights scores and some big news from Bordeaux where Gourcuff has handed in a trasnfer request

Tigana: ‘On the right track’ – Sunday’s reactions
Bordeaux coach Jean Tigana was thrilled with his men’s late 2-1 win at the Parc des Princes, but he wasn’t impressed with Yoann Gourcuff’s transfer request on the eve of the match. Meanwhile the stifling heat was a major talking point after Sunday night’s two other matches ended in 0-0 draws.
Sunday, August 22, 2010

Paris Saint-Germain / Girondins de Bordeaux : 1 - 2

Jean Tigana (Bordeaux coach): "When you take the three points, you don’t ask whether you deserved them or not. Above all, I liked the way we won it. With a busy fixture list around the corner, I’m satisfied. Michaël Ciani made an excellent return to the side, he has a strong physical presence and he allows other players to be more effective. Things were better. Now we just need to create more chances on goal. But we’re on the right track. [Concerning leaving Yoann Gourcuff on the bench at kick-off] Yesterday, he went to see the president and asked to leave the club. He can go, but you don’t say that on the eve of a match when you’ve lost two in a row. So he was on the bench. I thought Jussiê would be more motivated. I’m not in control of the situation, we have to wait until the end of the transfer window."

Antoine Kombouaré (PSG coach): "I can’t fault my players. We lost because we were up against a team who finished well and stayed in the match. It was a match of missed chances for us, with recurring situations in attack. Sometimes you have to know when to settle for a draw. There is a big disappointment in terms of tonight’s result, but the way we played, the way we defended and the way we created chances was very promising. We just lacked a bit of cool-headedness and [Bordeaux ’keeper Cédric] Carrasso was in grand form even though his defence had a tough night."

>> Team Sheet

FC Sochaux-Montbéliard / LOSC Lille Métropole : 0 - 0

Rudi Garcia (Lille coach): "The result gives us just a point, but the way we played should have given us three. We took control of the game. But more than that, you need to put your chances away and also have some favourable decisions to score goals and win. That’s what was missing for us. I think, on the whole, we deserved to win. Still, taking a point on the road is never a bad thing. We’re not worried. We know we’re not yet at 100% physically and the conditions, with such heat, weren’t easy."

Francis Gillot (Sochaux coach): "I think it was a good match. There weren’t a lot of scoring chances, but there was a lot of intensity. We really stepped up in terms of commitment and with our aerial game. We didn’t concede against an excellent team. Even though they’re still not at 100%, that still means something. Towards the end we were on the back foot but we didn’t give up. We kept looking to score, but we were wary of counter-attacks because we know what Lille are capable of. It’s our fist clean sheet for the season, which is great. It’s a point won that will give us confidence for what’s to come."

>> Team Sheet

Montpellier Hérault SC / SM Caen : 0 - 0

René Girard (Montpellier coach): "We tried our best but our game was a bit disorganised. It’s a shame in terms of the spectacle to play in such heat. You can’t blame the players, who put in the effort, but maybe they lacked lucidity in a few areas, notably in terms of the final pass. The players gave it all they had against a side that sat back in defence, and I don’t think they could have done any better. We caused Caen all kinds of problems, but just couldn’t find the goal to make the difference."

Franck Dumas (Caen coach): "We’re happy with the result, but less so concerning the way we played. My lads were up against a quality side but also the heat. Montpellier really closed us down. Our plan was to shut down the spaces at the back and then play it quickly out of defence. But we never managed to string together more than three or four passes. We didn’t play tremendous football but we managed to claim a point. When you can’t win a match, you have to make sure you don’t lose it."

Gignac on his way to OM, Rémy tests reveal heart problem
Marseille say they have agreed a deal with Toulouse to sign France striker Andre-Pierre Gignac, but there is already a question mark surrounding the future of Loïc Rémy, after a heart condition showed up in his medical following his move from Nice.
24 year-old Gignac, who was the top scorer in Ligue 1 in 2008-09 with 24 goals, will join the reigning champions on a five-year deal after OM agreed to pay €16 million to Toulouse.

Marseille will be hoping to pair him in attack with fellow France international Loïc Rémy, who signed from Nice on Thursday for a fee of up to €15.5 million. However, there is already something of a question mark over his future after a heart condition showed up in a routine medical.

"It's a mechanical problem," said club doctor Christophe Baudot. "Further tests will be carried out on Monday, after which we should be able to give Loïc more of an idea of what's wrong. He will not play as long as there are any doubts."Rémy will not, therefore, be able to make his debut this weekend against Lorient.

New challenge whets Rémy's appetite

Speaking earlier Rémy expressed his excitement at the challenge which lies ahead for him after making the move along the south coast. “It’s great to know that a club like Marseille want to sign you, and even if I had originally stated my desire to move to England, I’m delighted to be here," he said.

"Marseille is a massive club with great players, and it will be great to be able to play in Europe again after having had a taste of the Champions League with Lyon in 2006 and 2007.

“I’m leaving Nice to take a step up in my career and to play a part in this new-look Marseille team after the departures of (Mamadou) Niang and, possibly, Hatem (Ben Arfa). I’m also going in the hope that this will benefit my international career.”

The speculation surrounding the 23 year-old’s future became something of a soap opera this summer in France. For a long time he seemed set for a move to the English Premier League, but even after interest from the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham, Stoke City and West Ham never materialised into a concrete offer that was acceptable to Nice, Rémy says he remained convinced that his future would be resolved satisfactorily.

“There were moments of doubt, not from a personal viewpoint, but with everything that was said, it was a confusing time. I’m happy that everything has now been sorted, and that I’m leaving on good terms. Now, I’m coming into a club where I have to prove myself all over again, but it’s up to me to go out and win my place in the team.”

ULTRAS BOYCOTTING AT PSG

communique tribune auteuil

a new seasons at PSG has seen the day and thousands of lives have been darkened. Us supporters of the red and blue since childhood, season ticket holders since 5,10,15,20 years have been victims of a cruel theft, that of our passion.

a new season at PSG sees the day but the parc has been extingusihed. This magic place where the passion of the people of Paris resonates is now hollow. Our stadium also lies the victim of an atrocious crime, that of it's soul, the stands of the tribune populaire (ultras sections behind goals)

the thief; Robin Leproux with teh measures of his plan "Tout PSG" and his removal of season tickets in the tribune populaires. a plan which has got the approval of the media and 45,000 signatures...a drop in the water for a club which has over 2million fans.

In Place now under the pretence of a plan of security, the sanitisation of the stands and 'disneyland football' with it's mascots, it's cheerleaders and it's fake (something)
Equally draconian measures to stop peaceful protests, 249 arrests in front of the parc before the match against st etienne where the authorities are hunting anyone of the parisian 'race' at home and away matches.

In place a stadium without the ultra mentality, without chanting, without tifo, without passion. A stdium which will be blooming soon with shirts of Marseille, Lyon or that of bourdeaux.
A stadium, our stadium which is ready to resonate with the chants of the opposition supporters which has already been the case as seen in the game against st eteinne.

who will push PSG when they will find themselves in the lows of the league?
who will create the scared union and push our players who wear our shirt?
who will consider PSG like a great club without this unbelivable atmosphere which characterised the pac des princes?

Football is not a merchandise that one consumes, football is lived. PSG is lived. Our club is agony, our stadium breathes but it is being strangled .
We don't have the right to let this new politics establish itself, to take the risk that all of this which has disappeared will be for the greater good.

Without backup from the media, the site Tous Abonnes (the ultras set up a petition against the changes) received 14,000 signatures from 16,000 season ticket holders with the right taken away to support their team. This mobilisation cannot end there...

That is why we are calling for a boycott of the Parc starting with the encounter PSG-Bourdeaux, to prove to these directors that they won't be able to easily, under the pretense of combating violence, bannish the thousands of loyal fans from the parc. To prove that this club and this stade will not be able to survive without it's supporters.

Boycott le Parc, save le Paris-SG.

Ooooh, kabbott.

Big news chez les Gones. Gourcuff is joining from Bordeaux for €22 million on a five year deal. Great signing, I would have thought, although it remains to be seen whether Puel is the man to get the best out of him. (I'm not so sure on tht one!).

It all looks to be going a bit sour on the Gironde, as Wendel - a player I quite like - is looking to either get a big pay rise or he's off. He is on €10,000 a week at the moment which for a player who has score 42 goals and has 46 assists in four years isn't too sloppy.

Yes, it looks like it's a done deal. It's still a lot of money though. Pjanic is a good player but he hasn't really confirmed. What Lyon are really missing is a ball-winning DM now Toulalan has dropped back into the centre of the defence. I watched the game against Brest on Saturday, and quite frankly Lyon were cr*p. I don't know what it is with Claude Puel, but it's not working. Maxime Gonalons is als young and still inconsistant, and Makoun goes missing for large parts of the game. Plus there is a new injury jinx n the club this season. Last year a lot of players had groin problems. This was blamed on Puel's strict training methods deemed too hard by some players last season. This year they're dropping like flies with hamstring injuries: Cris, Bastos, Ederson, Cissokho and Lacazette. Puel has said he lightened the training pre-season so I presume he'll get the blame for that too!
One other piece of dissapointing news (for me) is that Lyon have loaned out Yanis Tafer to Toulouse for the season and Toulouse have got an opotion to buy him for 4m€. This guy looked good a few seasons ago and was dubbed ''le nouveau Benzema''. It would appear that he hasn't confirmed.
I can see Lyon loaning out other very good youngsters before the end of the month, which would be a shame IMO. Some of them should be given a chance. Ones to look out for who will probably be staying are: Novilo, Belfodil and Lacazette.

In L'Equipe this morning, it is said that Monaco are interested in Wendel.

Any chance of them loaning Nice a nice young striker? Assuming we don't get Loic Rémy back from OM, of course!!!!!

I never really liked Puel when he was at Lille. Training aside - and I think the injury toll tells it's own message - I find he never seems to let the players express themselves which IMHO is the basis for a succesful team. It's difficult to explain, but his teams always look.....repressed? stunted? style-less? He was shown quite a lot of patience by Aulas last year. It'll be interesting to see how much time he is given this season.

After the discovery of a ‘cardiac anomaly’ in his medical, further tests have prompted club doctors to give OM new recruit Loïc Rémy the all-clear to continue his playing career in the blue and white shirt.

Marseille with Rémy and Gignac up front looks tasty.

I am not convinced it isn't just a spoof from Marseille to try and get the price down a bit that they paid for Remy. If they are both fit, it looks like a good combi up front, although Deschamps has said, I think, that he sees Remy playing wide right. Presumably in a 4-3-3?

PS I always thought it was Fort Neath?

The big game tonight is on now - Bordeaux v Marseille. 60mins gone and OM are ahead 1-0.

Lyon were hopeless again, but a bit better after Gourcuff came on. The Lyon defence is in tatters (Toulalan, after all the praise he was getting last season when he stepped in to replace players in the centre of the defence, looks lost this year). The players are dropping (injured) like flies. This time it's Delgado's turn to be out.
The Bordeaux v Marseille game wasn't too bad. The ref missed a blatant handball for a Bordeaux penalty, God knows how, and subsequently gave the Marseille player Edouard Cissé a compensatory red card ten minutes later. It looked like Marseille would hold on to their 0:1 lead, but in the final minutes Modeste equalised with a good header.

Weekend Review: Toulouse roll on
Toulouse continued their perfect start to the season, beating Nancy 2-0 to go four points clear at the top of the table, while Bordeaux snatched a late 1-1 draw against ten-man Marseille. Victory eluded Auxerre, Lille and PSG after their mid-week European successes.
Meanwhile Brest notched their first win of the campaign 2-0 away to early-season pace-setters and fellow promotees Caen.

No stopping Toulouse

Excellent goals from Etienne Capoue and Franck Tabanou sealed a 2-0 away win over Nancy that sent the TFC streaking ahead of their competition, and coach Alain Casanova is making the most of it.

"For the moment, everything is going well," he admitted. "We’re on a roll with four wins from four games. We’re taking the time to enjoy this feeling because after a tough last season, it does you the world of good to string some wins together. We have good reason to feel calm but it’s our ambition to have a strong season, to really improve over what we achieved last time around."

Casanova’s midfield stifled the home side throughout the match, limiting the Nancy attack to just one chance in the first half before France U-21 international Capoue capped off an excellent all-round performance with a sweet finish after nutmegging Jordan Lotiès on the edge of the area in the 68th minute.

Nancy pushed hard for the equaliser, but Tabanou clinched the points in the third minute of injury time with a dazzling solo run from inside his own half – topped off by a deftly chipped finish – to send their hosts into 18th place.

Bordeaux battle through for draw

Bordeaux struggled to break down an OM side impressively organised and dangerous despite being at ten men for last hour of the match, but fought to the bitter end as new recruit Anthony Modeste pounced with three minute left to snatch a dramatic 1-1 draw after the influential Lucho Gonzalez had put the visitors ahead in the 12th minute.

After Edouard Cissé saw red for his two-legged tackle on Jaroslav Plasil, Marseille didn’t flinch in the face of Bordeaux’s numerical advantage. Loïc Rémy impressed in his Marseille debut and went close to widening the gap, but home ’keeper Cédric Carrasso produced a series of top-notch saves to keep his side within striking distance until Modeste pounced.

Lyon lapse in Lorient

Despite the debut of France midfielder Yoann Gourcuff, Lyon returned to the wrong side of the scoreline this week as goals from Kévin Gameiro and Lynel Kitambala handed Lorient a 2-0 win – their first of the season and their first on their new synthetic pitch – that sent Lyon into 17th place.

Meanwhile Rennes and Montpellier rose to second and third place respectively with their second wins of the season. Frédéric Antonetti’s men managed a 1-0 win over a vastly improved Arles-Avignon thanks to a thundering strike from distance from Victor-Hugo Montaño, while Montpellier had new boy Olivier Giroud – who scored his first top-flight goal – to thank for their 1-0 win in Valenciennes.

European hangover

Auxerre were looking to maintain the momentum after qualifying for the group phase of the Champions League in midweek, but Guy Lacombe’s unbeaten Monaco made the most of AJA’s fatigue as former Auxerre striker Daniel Niculae and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang both scored their second goals in two matches to notch a first win of the season.

Despite qualifying for the group phase of the Europa league on Thursday, PSG’s league season took on a sombre tone as they fell victim to a stunning attacking display in Sochaux, first-half goals from Modibo Maïga, Ideye Brown and Damien Perquis more than a match for Guillaume Hoarau’s lone strike just after the break.

Lille also tasted Europa League success during the week, but could only manage a 1-1 draw against Nice as Gervinho set up Eden Hazard to score early in the second half and cancel out Emerse Faé’s 34th-minute penalty.

Dizzying heights for Les Verts

Saint-Etienne climbed to fifth place with a 3-1 domination of Lens thanks to a career-first hat-trick from Dimitri Payet, whose incisive wing play and dazzling finishing à la Arjen Robben made Issam Jemaâ’s injury time goal a mere consolation.

Brest claimed their first maximum haul of the season with a 2-0 win away to last season’s Ligue 2 rivals Caen, Nolan Roux and Mario Licka (from the spot) doing the damage after Sambou Yatabaré was sent off for the hosts in the 19th minute.

Savidan scored fourteen goals in the 2008–09 season, but Caen was relegated to division two. Subsequently, he arranged a move to AS Monaco FC, in the €5million region; however, a defect in his heart was detected upon his medical, and the 31-year old ended his career on July 4, 2009, on the advice of the club's doctors.[3][4]
In the fall of 2009, Savidan - who played hockey in his childhood - joined hometown club ASG Angers, serving as coach of the under-9 team.

He's smiling there but he wasn't smiling in the post-match interview I saw. Well upset with the team performance he was.
Good luck to him, I say. He deserves it. He comes over as a really likeable chap.
Rennes: first time they've been top since '68, I think.

SPIRO BLOG: Rennes' star rising
Rennes are top of the league for the first time in 40 years and their esteemed youth academy continues to churn out some of the most exciting talent in France. Ligue 1 commentator Matthew Spiro wonders if the Yann M’Vila generation will be good enough to bring more silverware to Brittany at last.
No wonder Yacine Brahimi was all smiles when he arrived for his interview with Ligue1.com yesterday (Ed: look out for the interview next week). The France Under-21 star has enjoyed an amazing couple of months: he made his Ligue 1 debut in August, scored a stunning goal in his second match, and is already being hailed as one of the revelations of the season. To cap it all, the forward’s devilish skills have helped Rennes surge to the Ligue 1 summit.

Exceptional young talent

Brahimi’s rise, though, has hardly made waves in Brittany. He is just the latest in a line of outstanding kids to emerge from France’s most productive footballing school.

If Sylvain Wiltord, Ousmane Dabo and Mikaël Silvestre provided early evidence of the academy’s quality, the conveyor belt has since moved into overdrive.

Indeed, the French federation have rewarded Patrick Rampillon and his team with the ‘best academy’ gong in each of the last five seasons. Lyon, meanwhile, are looking to players with the Rennes stamp of approval to try to turn their fortunes around; summer recruits Yoann Gourcuff and Jimmy Briand both learned their trade in Brittany, and have teamed up with another Rennes graduate Anthony Réveillère at Stade Gerland.

Rennes coach Frédéric Antonetti named no fewer than eight homegrown players on his teamsheet for Sunday’s clash with Toulouse. Five of them started, including M’Vila and Kévin Théophile-Catherine, both members of the side that won the Coupe Gambardella (Youth Cup) in 2008.

M'Vila on the rise

M’Vila stamped his authority in midfield as usual, helping Rennes win 3-1, with two more produits de la maison, Romain Danzé and Sylvain Marveaux, on target.

Some thought Antonetti was joking when he tipped M’Vila for a World Cup spot after just a handful of first-team games last year. Laurent Blanc has taken him seriously, though, starting the 20-year-old in every game he has overseen.

Rennes also have some experienced men. The presence of goalkeeper Nicolas Douchez, giant Senegalese defender Kader Mangane - who has emerged as a veritable leader - and evergreen midfielder Stéphane Dalmat is undoubtedly helping the youngsters flourish.

I commentated Rennes for the first time this season on Sunday and was surprised they took so long to get going. They looked disjointed in the first half. But they are a solid, powerful unit, and reduced Toulouse to half-chances before outplaying them in the second period. So far, Rennes have conceded just four goals in eight games and have not fallen behind once.

The big question now is can this glittering generation transfer promise into silverware?

Les Rouge et Noir have won nothing since 1971, and Antonetti has been giving short shrift to title talk. The former Nice boss points out that Rennes’ budget of €47m is only the eighth highest in France. He neglects to mention, however, the club are owned by one of France’s most prominent and wealthy businessmen, François Pinault, and the coffers are full thanks to the €16m sale of Asamoah Gyan.

Attacking exodus

Rennes described Sunderland’s offer for Gyan as 'too good to refuse'; that may be so but the Ghanaian’s departure remains a sticking point. Four more forwards – Ismaël Bangoura, Moussa Sow, Briand and Mickaël Pagis – quit the Stade de la Route de Lorient in the summer. Losing Gyan in the dying moments of the transfer window has left Antonetti short of options, with only Victor Hugo Montaño having arrived, from Montpellier.

Rennes have said they will sign a striker in January. If they can remain near the top until then they surely have a chance of mounting a challenge in a year when the big boys are struggling.

Star power

Don’t tell Antonetti, but the Douchez, Mangane, Rod Fanni, M’Vila, Dalmat, Marveaux and Montano combination has the makings of a title-winning spine. I for one would love to see Rennes go all the way - if only because it will mean seeing more shots of their glamorous supporter Salma Hayek. The Mexican beauty announced her break-up with Pinault in 2008, but she remains attached to her beloved Stade Rennais and continues to attend games.

With some of the best French talent displayed on the pitch and a film star in the stands, Rennes is most definitely the place to be right now. Who was it who said Ligue 1 isn’t sexy enough?

A POINT! Yes, a point for Arles-Avignon in a gutsy 0-0 at Brest. They rode their luck but hey, they had to get one some time. Elsewhere I managed to watch some of the Lyon game and thought that they looked pretty good. Some shocking defensive errors from Lille, though.

Elsewhere, Loic Rémy got his first goal for OM (although he did try to kick the goalkeeper into the goal first). And Nice got a great 2-1 home win against ASSE. Look at the gap, though between Nice in 12th and PSG in 3rd - 2 points.

Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis! :D

I saw the film recently - very good - I must say that my gf's family are not bona fide ch'tis, but I did see a few at the game on Sunday.

Because it was moved to the Sunday we had to leave early to make sure we got to Lille in time for the train, but got given some complimentary tickets so it was still well worth going.

It wasn't the most exciting game I've ever seen, but I enjoyed it nevertheless. Lens are obviously short on confidence and played quite a direct game, more long balls than I would have expected from a French game. Rennes were much more as I expected, technically very good and controlled, if lacking something up front and maybe a bit of ambition. The atmosphere was pretty decent and I liked the ground which has a certain decaying splendour.

I'd love to go back to see Lens play one of the bigger teams who would bring a decent following. Good though the atmosphere was, it was a bit surreal that Rennes only had 30-40 fans there. I know it was a televised game and that the country is in the midst of the strikes, but I still thought there might be a few more than that, what with them being top an all, even if most French teams don't travel well.

Back from a school trip to Dublin. It feels like I haven't posted on here for ages. And now I'm on a nice little half-term break of ten days. :) Then it's back to school for a week before another long weekend of four days to celebrate Armistice Day! :) I hardly work enough to deserve to go on strike.

I watched this match and galtier is right,a draw was a fair result. Not only did payet blast the penalty over the bar.Saddi missed a sitter 30 seconds before, which he also could've squared to a few unmarked teamates in the box.

Late sucker punch for Nice at Lens (93rd Minute), but I'm not sure they deserved anything out of the game.

Téfécé looked good value for their win at Sochaux, which is not an easy place to go to. THree headed goals (if memory serves) and all from centre backs.

Lyon v Paris Saint-Germain: 1 - 2 a.e.t.

Paris left it late at the Stade Gerland on Wednesday night but, after extra time, managed to overcome Lyon 2-1 to book a place in the quarter-finals.

The game would have finished in regulation time with a Lyon win had OL old boy Mathieu Bodmer not hammered home his volley from the edge of the area with just four minutes to go.

In-form OL man Jimmy Briand had given the home side the lead in the 39th minute but as the match went into extra time, the match turned to PSG’s favour as both coaches brought on their star names, and it was veteran Ludovic Giuly, another Lyon alumnus, who blasted home from close range (101’).

The final 19 minutes were chock-full of end-to-end attacking football and a host of chances were created but PSG held out to send Lyon packing and heap the pressure on their under-fire coach Claude Puel.

PUEL KEEN TO GET OUT OF MEDIA SPOTLIGHT

http://www.ligue1.com/images/photos/articles/web/fiche//1011_UK_L1_Puel_Lyon.jpg

Claude Puel has spoken of his wish to 'get off the front pages' after being confirmed as coach of Lyon ahead of this weekend's meeting with Sochaux.
Puel's position at Stade Gerland looked in jeopardy after OL suffered a League Cup exit at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday. However, club president Jean-Michel Aulas has given the former Lille boss the green light to continue his work, and Puel is looking forward to turning his attentions back to events on the pitch.

"We've avoided getting the players involved too much, and now we can focus on our game. We've played well over the last month, and the commitment has been more than satisfactory," said Puel, whose team lies in 14th, just three points off the bottom three prior to Week 11.

"The results haven't always been there, but the intention has. The objective is really to start talking about football again, and get off the front pages of the papers."

'Never a deadline'

Three successive wins to start the club's Champions League campaign played a major role in convincing the board that Puel should stay in place. Despite intense speculation, the man himself never felt in danger.

"For me, there was never a deadline. The president has clarified the situation to put an end to the speculation and allow us to work in peace," said the 49-year-old. "The order of the day is to present a united front and get back to the football. There are a couple of internal adjustments, and we'll draw conclusions after each game, which is normal. The president said it himself: It was time to take stock, not the end of an ultimatum."

Another poor show from Lyon tonight. The only plus points came from the performances of a lot of young players either in the starting XI or who came on as subs. Many of the fans were calling for Puel to go in spite of Aulas's vote of confidence the other day.

WEEK 12 REVIEW: PSG ON A HIGH

Ligue 1
08/11/2010Increase Font Size Reduce Font Size Print Article Send Article via Email
Paris rocketed to third place on the table with a thrilling 2-1 Clasico win that put an end to Marseille’s seven-match unbeaten run in the league while Lille climbed to fifth with a vintage attacking display to beat leaders Brest 3-1.
Meanwhile Arles-Avignon secured their first-ever Ligue 1 win with a determined 3-2 effort against Caen.

Grudge match triumph for PSG

It’s party time in Paris right now, and not just because Antoine Kombouaré’s men managed a first win at the Parc des Princes against arch-rivals Marseille since 2004.

"It’s really a huge satisfaction, first of all to win because it had been a long time since we had won at home," said Kombouaré of PSG’s first home win since Week 4. "And to win against Marseille makes it even better. Last year we copped two hidings at the hands of Marseille. We’ve gained confidence in our potential and we’ve been able to consistently perform well."

PSG would have been right to be wary as they took on an in-form OM side that had lost just twice in their last 13 matches in all competitions, but Nene had other ideas, setting up both of PSG’s goals in a frenzied opening 20 minutes, and in doing so revived the scoring form of the club’s two star strikers.

Mevlut Erding opened their account with just his third of the season when Steve Mandanda fumbled Nene’s fierce shot and then Guillaume Hoarau produced a classy finish for his first since Week 5 after Nene’s inspired chipped pass had taken out the entire Marseille defence.

Lucho Gonzalez pulled one back (22’) and Marseilel could have saved a point had Apoula Edel not saved brilliantly from André Ayew’s injury-time effort.

Lille back to their best

Lille shook off some erratic recent form to secure their first league win since Week 8 with a vintage attacking display in their 3-1 domination of leaders Brest, whose eight-match run without conceding a goal came to a grinding halt.

Moussa Sow opened the scoring (42’) before the Lille attack really got into gear and Gervinho (49’) and Eden Hazard (75’) secured the win - and fifth place - despite Romain Poyet’s powerfully volleyed reply (62’).

Arles-Avignon in historic win

With nine defeats in their first 11 Ligue 1 matches, Arles produced a determined display to best Caen 3-2 with their first-ever top-flight win. Forwards and Gaël Germany (24’) and Kaba Diawara (33’, 76’) and did the damage in a see-sawing affair that saw Youssef El-Arabi go to the top of the Ligue 1 scorer charts with his eighth of the season before Kandia Traoré struck a second for the visitors.

Rennes held

Rennes missed yet another opportunity to regain top spot when they were held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Lyon on Saturday night, Frédéric Antonetti’s men allowing Michel Bastos to equalise (54’) after Jires Kembo Ekoko had made the break. The draw sees Lyon dip into the bottom half of the table as the pressure on coach Claude Puel continues.

Lorient hit their straps

Christian Gourcuff’s side had Kévin Gameiro to thank for their 2-1 win in Saint-Etienne, the diminutive France forward putting paid to Les Verts’ unbeaten home record with a double (22’, 82’) on either side of Bakary Sako’s equaliser (56’). Every time Gameiro scores, Lorient win, and this was the fifth such occasion this campaign, taking the Breton side up four places to ninth.

After falling victim to an irrepressible VA attack in a first half that saw David Ducourtioux make the break in the 18th minute, Bordeaux bounced back in the second to seal a 1-1 draw thanks to Moussa Maazou’s 85th-minute effort after Brazilian Jussiê had missed from the spot.

Despite having capped some impressive recent form with a 2-1 win over Ajax in the Champions League on Wednesday, Auxerre could only manage a 1-1 draw in Sochaux, Frédéric Sammaritano’s 24th-minute strike seeming to have done enough for a win until Modibo Maïga equalised with eight minutes to go.

With just one win in their last eight matches, Toulouse’s poor form continued as they were beaten 2-0 in Nice, Danijel Ljuboja (17’) and Chaouki Ben Saada (90’+2) handing Eric Roy’s 12th-placed side their fourth win of the season.

Monaco notched their second win of the campaign in a shock 4-0 win in Nancy after Chu-Young Park added a double (81’, 87’) to own goals from Benjamin Gavanon (55’) and Jordan Lotiès (62’).

Lens collected just a second home win for the season 2-0 against Montpellier, goals from Adil Hermach (7’) and Kanga Akalé (41’) securing the precious points for the 19th-placed club.

:hi:

Quite! It just goes to show how stupid "they" were to ban the OM fans. This is the Coupe de la Ligue final, so they'll be allowed to go.
Quelle différence?

Just to mention: PSG's renaissance ironically coincides with the PSG ultras no longer going to the Parc des Princes. This has probably helped the players to get rid of their inhibitions. JAT

It's not either of those as they are 2006 and 2008 Adidas templates. I think I know what it is but it's hard to tell as there's no definitive picture of the front of it. Normally he wears red but obviously as PSG wear red at home he couldn't wear it.

I think this might be it...

The French Ligues are like this if you want to follow some of the underdogs:

Ligue 1
Ligue 2
National
CFA 1
CFA 2
DH (Division d'Honneur)
DHR (Division d'Honneur Régionale)
DSR (Division Supérieure Régionale)
PH (Promotion d'Honneur)
PHR (Promotion d'Honneur Régionale)

Teams to look out for:

4 DOM-TOM (French overseas) teams:

Dragon Papeete (Tahiti) - a mere 16,000km between Tahiti and France and a 20-hour flight.
Majicavo (Mayotte)
St-Pauloise (Réunion)
CS Le Moule (Guadeloupe)

I'll also be looking out for local amateur teams:

Lyon Duchère (CFA) - This team have already caused cup upsets in the past. La Duchère is one of the 'dodgy' banlieue in Lyon. a few seasons ago they weren't far from getting promoted to the Ligue 2, something which Président Aulas (Olympique Lyonnais) wouldn't have appreciated, not because fans would have changed to supporting La Duchère, but Olympique Lyonnais would have lost their monopoly of media coverage locally.

Marcy-Charbonnières (DH) - they've probably never got this far before in the French Coupe. This team was probably created after the merger of two leafy west Lyon villages, Marcy L'Etoile and Charbonnières-les-Bains. On Sunday afternoons, 15-20 years ago, friends and I used to climb over the fencing around the ground and have a kickabout on their pitch. I'm pretty sure they've got changing rooms now, but that's about it.

Villefranche-sur-Saône (CFA) - 30 minutes up the autoroute and there you are in the heart of the 'Beaujolais.

Ain Sud Foot (DHR) - I don't know anything about this lot ...

Ah! Les charmes de la Coupe ...

One of Lyon's worst halves of the season in the first half and probably their best half of the season in the second.

Good games for Lissandro and Gourcuff when they came on, and probably their best games of the season for Gomis and Makoun who are the regular targets of the Gerland boo-boo boys.

Latvian Eagle
22-11-2010, 04:07 PM
What's happened to Gomis? I remember you guys singing his praises when he was at ASSE?!

I don't know what it is with Marseille, they seem to have bundles of cash, I half expect them to do something decent each season and then other than last year they seriously implode!!!

By the way how do you actually pronounce the name Loic like Loic Remy?

BB Bob
22-11-2010, 04:19 PM
Loïc Remy is pronounced lowik (the two dots over the i mean that it is pronounced).

Marseille seems to have this effect on players - the pressure of expectation. Also, players like Gignac find that he has to try to play in a team rather than the team revolve around him.

I defer to our Lyon correspondant for matters "lyonnais", but (personally) I think he is a guy who needs to play. Sitting on the bench for long periods doesn't seem to have made him very happy. Perhaps he needs a couple of seasons down on the Cote d'Azur to sharpen him back up again.....:D

Might have to get myself this seasons Marseille kit. Can't decide between home or away though. The third one has some weird African band down it. I know the old chairman was African, but I thought he'd been replaced by someone French?!

I'm going to be in Nord Pas de Calais and I'm hoping to get to Lens vs Rennes on October 16th, but have a slight concern it may be moved to the Sunday due to the tv schedules.

I would have thought Lyon vs Lille would be a likely mover, maybe along with Auxerre vs Bordeaux, but does anyone know how far in advance these decisions are announced?

Thanks

So the match was changed to Sunday. Did you make it in the end? If not, maybe you had no regrets in the end, judging by the score.

A couple of late games played last night:-

Wednesday 1 December 2010

19:00 Olympique de Marseille 0 - 0 Stade Rennais FC
19:00 Valenciennes FC 1 - 1 AS Saint-Etienne

It was bloody freezing in France last night, even in Marseille. Hats off to them at the Stade Nungesser, though as it must have been brass monkeys there. It's just taken me 36 hours to get back from Nice - they thought it was unspeakably cold at 11 degrees - via a TGV ride to Paris and a night in the capital. There wasn't much to warm me in the Marseille game though, where Mandanda saved penalty early doors. Rennes aren't a bad team, though, and the result leave Marseille on top of the table.

What is going on a Lens though? The court case for the famous banderole incident at the Cup Final a couple of years ago has finally come to court, but on the field, they are really shipping in the goals. A passionate bunch of fans surely deserve better?

Thats an understatement. After coming within one win of going up last year,i thought they might be challenging again this year, but relegation looks more on the cards.

St etienne let in a late equalizer against bordeaux it finished 2.2.Riviere did a stern john at shef weds just before their equalizer which would've made it 3.1

Some interesting games this weekend, finishing up on Sunday night which is probably more important for Marseille than Monaco. Lens v Caen is a real 6 pointer as well at the wrong end of the table. The Lensois faithful have really turned on the team in the last couple of weeks after a hapless run - there must be a change in the offing there. Dumas at Caen must be under a but of pressure too. PSG have got a good chance to cement their position at home to an out of sorts Monaco too.

I'm really looking forward to tonight's game. If it's anything like last year's "match du siècle" (5:5), I'll be happy.
It's pretty windy up here at the moment, so I hope the Mistral won't spoil things tonight as it's probably blowing all the way down the Rhône valley. The sooner OM put a bit of roofing on their stands, the better.

Allez l'OL!

Not a bad game. Lyon will be happier with a point than Marseille. Who would have thought that three of Lyon's better players last night were Lovren, Makoun and Gomis, more often the target of Lyon's boo-boo boys? And who would have thought that Lyon would play so well without Cris, Toulalan and Gourcuff?

". Le routier descend et lui crie "JE SUIS DEDE, C'EST L'HIVER, IL NEIGE ET JE CONDUIS LE CAMION DE SEL DE LA D.D.E CONNASSE!!!

On the subject of snow, I quite like this one too (apologies to the non-french speakers and quebecois)

L’hostie d’imbécile m’a vu arriver.

30 mai

How can a city as big as Paris only have one top team ?

France is not a football country like England, Germany, Italy or Spain. They don't have a big enough number of supporters to have, say, more than one "top" club in Paris or any other big city for that. Apart from Paris St Germain, Lyon, Marseille and St Etienne, fans rarely travel to away games in large numbers. Plenty of idiots, however, asking me which one of the Big Four I support. :hmph: I then give them the lecture on what a real football club is and means.

Quite pleased with that. There have been rumours around about this one for a while as Bellion obviously doesn't feature in Tigana's plans, although whether Tigana features in Bordeaux's is also an interesting question. The bosses have given him no money to spend in the transfer window, so he has to free up something somewhere. I'd suggest freeing up some space on his CV, personally.

Bellion did well last time he as at the Stade du Ray and we could certainly do with someone who can score. Eric Roy is quietly getting on with a good job in Nice with precious little resource. There is a new stadium planned for the Euros, but that is a way off and in the meantime money is short. Poté needs some game time, so the loan move suits too.

No surprise that there has been a change at Lens:-

Bölöni delighted to be back

László Bölöni has spoken of his delight at returning to football after being handed the task of steering Lens away from the Ligue 1 relegation zone.

The experienced Romanian has been out of work since leaving his post as coach of Al-Wahda in the United Arab Emirates in the autumn, and returns to France where he has enjoyed previous spells in charge of Nancy, Rennes and Monaco.

“The easy option would have been to stay at home but I love the job too much. It’s like a drug to me,” he said after being presented to the media on Sunday. “I give a hundred percent at everything I do, whether it be at training or playing cards with my daughter. I like to go to bed at night feeling that I have given my club everything that day, that way I can sleep more easily. I am also going to try and become a Ch’timi (the name given to residents of the North) as quickly as possible. I know they are a tough people but they have big hearts.”

Despite his delight at being back in Ligue 1, Bölöni is in no doubt as to the size of the task that awaits him at the Stade Félix-Bollaert. However, the man who has won league titles in Portugal with Sporting and in Belgium with Standard Liège called on the squad to pull together in order to climb the table.

'Such a waste'

“Lens are going through a bad patch just now,” he admitted. “When I look around at the facilities and the support this club has it seems like such a waste. I am not here to judge but rather to work as well as possible with the players and get them out of this situation.

“The first thing I did when I met the players was to wish them good health. Then I emphasised the importance of respect. We need to put our egos to one side. Everyone has their own interests, but we must focus on the collective now. Being a footballer is possibly the best job in the world, but to me training remains my job. I demand concentration, and physical and mental presence. If that is the definition of a firm-handed coach, then that is what I am.

“There are always problems in a dressing room. When I was at Sporting, I had players who didn’t get on but that didn’t stop us from winning the title. When you are in a negative spiral, all the problems come to the surface. Respect is the most important thing. We will sort out our problems by talking about them.”

'Capable of adapting quickly'

Lens president Gervais Martel said that Jean-Guy Wallemme had asked to be relieved of his duties as coach after two-and-a-half years at the helm, and insisted that Bölöni was always his first choice to take over.

“He has come close to taking over here a couple of times in the past. He is someone I knew and have always followed. He is capable of adapting quickly and we will provide him with all the means necessary to succeed.”

Bölöni will work with a new backroom staff at the Stade Félix-Bollaert, after Martel confirmed Georges Tournay will return to the club for his third spell as assistant coach. Jacques Santini, Michel Etorre and Colbert Marlot seem set to follow Wallemme out of the door.

Bölöni’s first match will be a friendly against Borussia Dortmund at their Spanish training camp this Wednesday. His first competitive outing will be the French Cup tie away to Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday evening.

And a "Bonne Année" from me to all Championnat fans.

It's the equivalent of the 3rd round of the French Cup over here this weekend and loads of potential banana skins. Cup upsets are more frequent over here because these games come straight after the winter break. The amateur clubs probably train more than the pros if they've got a big Ligue 1 club to play, and the big clubs tend to use the Cup game as a preparation for next week's first Ligue game after the break.

And what about Philsick? A real dilemma here with Clermont v St Etienne! Where will his loyalties lie?

There are 6 clubs still in the Coupe from the "DH" (Division d'Honneur) which is the equivalent of Division 6 (whatever that is in England now).

CFA2 = Division 5
CFA = Division 4
National = Division 3
Ligue 2
Ligue 1

What happened to those Conference leagues?
The last time I watched a non-league match was Croydon at home when they were trying to stay up in the Rothmans Isthmian (sp?) League some time in the late 70s. Their best player was an ageing, baldy CF whose name I can't remember who had some kind of local legend status IIRC. His first name might have been Barry ...

As predicted, an avalanche of "Coupesets" already, the biggest surely being the defeat of Monaco by Chambéry (CFA2). It's half-time in the evening kick-offs. I'll post all the scores, including Clermont v ASSE, later.

Well the Blue Square Premier is what was the GM Vauxhall Conference, or the Football Conference.

Conference North and South were introduced in 2004 so they are relatively new.

Ryman Premier (real name Isthmian league) and Southern Premier League gain promotion to Conference South, and in the North teams from the Northern Premier and Southern Premier gain promotion to the Conference North.

Not sure how teams from the Southern Premier can go into either division but there we go. Below the Premier of each of these levels is a Division one and so on.

Merde alors, Phil

Asse 0 clermont 2

I'm in nice this weekend and asked someone I know who is un vrai nissart if he'd seen the Nice score - la bataille a Creteil as I wittily dubbed it. His response was, basically, who cares, its the coupe de france. Magic of the cup, my back passage! Nobody seemed to care less. (We won on penalties by the
way)

Does anyone know much about the game in the 70's I think where Bordeux played a game without a goalkeeper in protest?
