Grenoble straight through to National (Div 3) after being in Ligue 1 last season!
It could be worse, maybe demoted to CFA 1 (Div 4) due to illegal betting according to L'Equipe this morning! What a waste! They've got a spanking new stadium too.

Lyo make tits of themselves (again), this time at Brest!

Brest 1:1 Lyon

It's no longer in Lyon's hands ...
Stubborn Aulas has decided to go all the way with Puel. When Puel goes (of which I'm sure), there'll be plenty of good reading to be had in the press over here. Cris, Lloris, maybe Toulalan may have some things interesting things to say, and I'm not sure Aulas will be able to keep all of this private as he likes too.

Evian promoted to Ligue 1 after being in National (Div 3) last season, and Dijon only need 1 point from their final game. Le Mans have blown it slightly by losing to already relegated Vannes 4:3 after being 2:0 up. Like Grenoble two years ago and Ales Avignon this season, more "small" clubs in Ligue 1, and more "big budget" clubs (Lens and maybe Monaco ) dropping into Ligue 2 and not necessarily being able to come straight back up.

Tonight Lille need a point against PSG to be sure of the title. That would help Lyon who, by beating Caen tonight at home, would guarantee a Champions' League (qualifying round) slot. I'll be at Gerland cheering on Lyon and jeering on Puel if necessary. Some of the Ultras are organising a demo at some time tonight. If Lyon get their more-than-important 3rd place there will be a firework display after the final whistle. One way or another there will be fireworks!
I got my ticket via one of the recently-appointed financial directors. She is a "friend of a friend". We were socialising last weekend and a few of us were trying to ply her with booze to get her to "spill the beans" on what is going on backstage at Gerland. She's a very nice lass, so I'm just happy that she's got me a ticket for the match tonight. For the moment!

Fans turned on Puel big time last night? TBH they've been on his back for a couple of years. Of course this is something you would never see in England. Correct me if I'm wrong. Not much singing from les Bad Gones, only anti-Puel stuff, and every ten minutes they brought out anti-Puel banners and one or two aimed at Président Aulas! My daughter and I took some photos which we'll put up some time. Hard day today. BBQ + Tour of Italy highlights to catch up on in the evening. Now when am I going to do that marking?

Lyon really "only" need a point against Monaco except if Les Verts lie down and let PSG win 0:5.

I can see Lyon - in turmoil - losing at Monaco in an "up yours" from the players to Aulas. Nancy take all three against an already relegated Lens. Caen - not bad at home - take a point off a Marseille side already on holiday and with nothing to play for.

Nice, away at Valenciennes, need a point for safety. Cue a(nother) 3-0 pasting.

Alternatively, Estrosi - the mayor of Nice and big buddy of Sarkozy - "arranges" for the Valenciennes manager to have an unsavoury incident in a hotel with a chamber maid. He is then promptly arrested and held without bail for eight days until the game is over.

Nice still lose 3-0.

It should be a good night's football tonight. If things didn't go their way Auxerre, who are 12th, could be relegated. Up at the top 1 point could be enough for Lyon to clinch a most undeserved 3rd (Champions' League qualifying slot) place unless St Etienne (Lyon's arch enemy) let Paris Germain get 5 or 6 (I'm not exactly sure) enough for PSG to leapfrog over Lyon and get third, in which case Lyon would have to beat Monaco to be sure. Except Monaco need maybe 1 point, if other results go their way, or probably all 3 to be sure of staying up. Lyon's unpopular coach is a former Monaco player ...
Valenciennes v Nice also promises to be a bit of a tense affair, n'est-ce pas BB Bob?

There was a piece inNice Matin today saying that if OGCN go down, their budget drops from €27m to about €12m (including the 1 year €2m parachute payment). I guess it is the same for the other relegated teams, but it is a huge difference. I guess it exaplins why Grenoble and Strasbourg completely blow up on relegation and end up going through L2 like a dose of exlax.

Same for Lyon if they don't qualify for the CL. Big salaries out: Lisandro, Lloris :( and Cissokho. Gourcuff to stay. He'd have something to prove.

Oh yes whether 3rd or not.
I was at Gerland last Saturday v Caen with my daughter for her first ever game. Talk of a surreal atmosphere. Of course it was mainly the Bad Gones who were giving Puel the abuse with some, I must say, witty banners being produced every 10 minutes or so. Aulas kept saying that it was only a minority. True but the 34,000 other fans didn't get behind the team either. They just politely remained quiet.

There's talk of Jean Fernandez arriving. He's leaving Auxerre at the end of the evening. Lacombe, Aulas' right-hand man, is more for Rémi Garde!

Second goal valenciennois. My 3-0 prediction looking on target. ASSE 1 PSG 0, too, but lets hope no-one tells Lyon and they don't relax too much.

I'm not sure that Eric Roy will be at le Ray next season either. He was under a lot of pressure during this season at times. We need Paul Daniels or Tommy Cooper down here or some other magician. Trying to be competetive with one of the smalllest attendences in L1 is, to say the least, challenging.

Is Fernandex a good appointment? Auxerre got into Europe last year, didn;t they, but this year has been pretty disappointing.

Domenech is still free, I think.....

Fernandez did quite well at Marseille a couple of years ago. He did what he could at Auxerre with a small squad but has a reputation for playing defensive football, which is the last thing Lyon want next season.

Oh and a coup de chapeau for Sow.

Deschamps maybe back to Italy. He wanted a top-class CF and didn't get one. That "gutted" him. He ended up getting Gignac, who's been disappointing and was expensive, and Rémy who was also expensive and showed glimpses of his undoubted talent but not week in week out.

In spite of France winning the WC in '98, it is not a footballing country. There are only a few clubs who have any decent away support. It's quite funny when the cameras zoom in on the away end and you can actually count the number of fans. Ligue 2 crowds are embarrassing. Let's not even talk about National.

So the musical chairs have started.

Francis Gillot - ex-manager at Lens (oh, how they must miss him) - having steered Sochaux into Europe is leaving and looks set to join Bordeaux. I have always had a slightly irrational hatred of Sochaux, I must confess, and I thought they were a bunch of thugs when I saw them at Nice this year.

Jean Fernandez, one of the favourites to join Lyon has opted for........well, we'll have to wait and see, eh? I am sure he hasn't been tapped up at all. Oh no.

Meanwhile Remi Garde has emerged from the shadows to also be named a Lyon favourite. This, please remember, is the man who makes Claude Puel look like Frederic Antonetti (the mad Corsican in charge at Rennes now, but formerly at my beloved OGCN)

Also, down on the COte d'Azur, after a near death experience, a new victim...sorry, that came out wrong.....a new investor has been found to take a big stake in le Gym. We now have a b....a b.......a bbbbb....I just can't get the word out......a budget to spend on players and salaries. Whether this is enough to keep Ospina in goal, Clerc at LB or Mounier remains to be seen and there are some alarming tales of Eric ROy's desire to sign Frau. Still, it has got to be better than the dross on the pitch this season! On verra.

Oh, and for the first time in living memory a PSG coach has had a contract extension. Bonne chance à M. Koumbouaré. Hopefully the new Qatari investors won't want to replace him with one of the ex-Chelsea managers straight away.

And in late news, I think Deschamps is extending his time at the Vélodrome. Until July, anyway......

What's happening with the management at Lyon? Any news?!?

Puel's reign is officially over from today which will probably mean Rémi Garde and Bruno Génisio (a former Lyon player from the 90s) with Bernard Lacombe having more responsibilities rather than him just telling Président Aulas how crap all the coaches are.

So that's it. Toulalan has signed for Malaga, and Lyon are looking at the 23 year-old Congo international David Ndinga, who plays for Auxerre, to replace him. Lyon have also been considering Cissokho of Toulouse to replace "le Toul" but the 15m€ price tag is too much nowadays for Lyon who are tightening the belt and looking to bring on more of their talented youngsters rather than splashing out wildly.

Lots of smiles between Aulas, Lacombe and Garde at the press conference yesterday. Relief all round that Puel has gone and taken the doom and gloom with him.
If Lyon get through the qualifying round of the Champions' League in August, they may try and get a relatively big signing in for that competition. If not, they'll just be trying to win the Championship back.
Other players on the way out (maybe): Bastos (to Juventus), Kallstrom, Pjanic, Cissokho (Man Citeh), Loveren (Liverpool), Cris.

Lacazette to be Lyon's next star.

Oh, have you heard that Sydney Govou may be coming back to France to play for Evian?
It's only a couple of hours down the autoroute to Lyon and all his old drinking buddies.

In fact he's still only 26 so he may still have it in him at that level. The other player was Le Tallec who also went to ASSE on loan last year or the year before last.

Gourcuff has now had 2 very poor seasons. I don't think having Puel as a coach did much for his confidence either. He won't be going anywhere this summer, but he'll have a lot to prove at Gerland next season where I'm convinced he'll bounce back.

Gourcuff was never a Puel type player, but then neither was Pjanic, I guess. He was great as a kid, but he's just gone nowhere for 3 years (that's Pjanic). Mybe, like LOSC, once the cloud of Puel is lifted, the players can go out and begin to relax a little.

I think Cris's legs have gone though. A great player in his day, but it must be nearly time to send him off to Nice for a bit of sunshine in his twilight years.....

What about that other kid you've got? Tar something or other? Another one from the Benzema school?

A couple of news clips

Olympique de Marseille have announced France international captain Alou Diarra will complete his transfer from Bordeaux on Monday, while Didier Deschamps has also rubbished rumours of Arsenal's interest in attacking livewire Mathieu Valbuena...

Marseille coach Didier Deschamps had tried to sign the former Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Lens and Lyon midfielder last season. Diarra rejoins fellow 2009 French champion Soulymane Diawara at the Mediterranean club.

A statement on OM's official website read:

Marseille internationals will join up with their teammates at the preseason training camp at Port-du-Crouesty on Monday. While Steve Mandanda, André Ayew, Mathieu Valbuena, Souleymane Diawara, Stéphane Mbia, Loic Remy and Charles Kaboré will be there at midday, new signing Nicolas N’Koulou and Argentine playmaker Lucho will be there mid-afternoon, after they were forced to take later flights. Finally, Alou Diarra will head first to Marseille in the morning to undergo a mandatory medical and to sign his new contract. He will then head to Brittany on Monday evening.

Deschamps: Valbuena to Arsenal? Just rumours...

Deschamps also revealed during an internet chat with supporters that Arsenal's rumoured interest in France international Valbuena was just that: rumours.

"That's just standard mercato talk," said the former World Cup and European championship winner. "In the two years I've been at the club, we haven't had a single concrete offer for Valbuena - and that's not to say that he's not an excellent player.

"Given that we're in the Champions League, I think it's important that he stays at Marseille."

Good signing IMHO

And news from the coast:-

Nice: 'Hand pick our recruits'

http://www.ligue1.com/images/photos/articles/web/fiche//1011_UK_L1_Lille_Nice_Gace_Ben_Saada_Fae_Pejcinovi c_Sable.jpg

Nice began preseason training yesterday with just one new signing, former France international Camel Meriem, but coach Eric Roy claimed several new players would be joining the club in the coming days...

Along with seven other sides, the OGCN staved off relegation on the final day of the 2010-11 campaign and Roy believes it was a lack of squad depth that saw his team struggle in the final weeks of the season.

Learn from costly mistakes

"Last season we played with essentially 15 or 16 players because certain elements didn't do what they had to do to play in Ligue 1, that cost us, so lets not do that again," said the former Nice and Marseille defender. "We really want to hand pick our recruits.

For the moment, only former Sochaux youth product and ex Bordeaux, Marseille, Monaco and Arles-Avignon playmaker Camel Meriem, 31, has joined.

Meriem: Technique, vision, endurance

"We wanted to sign him when he left Monaco, but it didn't happen," continued the former club sporting director who replaced Didier Ollé-Nicolle as coach for the final 14 games of the 2009-10 term. "We watched him a lot last season with Arles-Avignon and he impressed us with his technique, his measured passing and his ability to back up with repetitive efforts."

But after losing Abdou Traoré and David Bellion (loan return to Bordeaux) as well as Lionel Letizi, Alain Cantareil, Ismaël Gace, Grégory Paisley, Chaouki Ben Saada, Danijel Ljuboja, Mamadou Bagayoko, Habib Bamogo and Abeiko Quansah (all out of contract), Roy has promised more reinforcements on the way.

Monzon, Digard... others

"[24-year-old Boca Juniors left-back ] Fabian Monzon should be here by the end of the week, while Didier Digard is currently in discussions with Middlesbrough [from who he has been on loan at Nice for 18mths] because he still has a year left on his contract.

"I'm also hoping for two forwards and another midfielder," continued Roy. "We're going to hold on to our best players and bolster the squad with a few good signings. It's the proof that we're building something here."

Ljuboja (or whatever) - the Serbian striker we had up front last year - has gone and we have sent Bellion back to Bordeaux where he can look totally disinterested on the Gironde rather than on the Cote d'Azur. Still no sign of any fresh blood up front, which is a concern as onion bag stuffing was nearly our undoing last year.

He has promised some wonga (and not all of it stuffed in a brown envelope à la niçois). There is the bold new eco-stadium being built for Euro 2016, manufactured from wood apparently

Estrosi, the mayor of Nice, is very ambitious and a big mate of Sarko. He has decided Nice needs a new stadium (although to be fair, it didn't need Maigret to work that out). Unfortunately, it is planned for a rundown bit of Nice to the west that has no transport links. Still that will be sorted out later, eh?

Things can only get better. Tigana's gone and been replaced by Francis Gillot who used to train Sochaux who did very well last season. He brought through a number of very good youngsters. He's got a good reputation. A lot of players have come back from loan periods (r.p.) most of them being kids. I don't know if Bellion will be staying. Cavenaghi has gone to River Plate, Fernando has left and, of course, Diarra has gone to Marseille. Kabbott - can you let me know what is happeneing in the National League? Was trying to look up fixtures for this season but is there a delay due to some teams appealing soemthing or other?

I've had a quick look but found nothing concrete. What I know is this: FC Strasbourg, who finished fourth in Ligue 2 and were almost promoted to Ligue 1, were "relegated" two leagues down to the CFA (Div 5) by the DNCG (the financial controllers of finances in "pro" football). I then read that FC Cherbourg still don't know what Ligue they'll be playing in next season. Either they're being considered to replace Strasbourg or they've got their own financial problems. They're really strict over here as regards finances and if a club's books are not inorder, the club is demoted.
The FFF have published a partial calendar of the opening National fixtures. I'll find the link and keep looking for more info after the Stage has finished. :)

Nice have got rid of some more (expensive) crud in Adeilson, a Brazilian who cost 1€ and who rarely played, and Quartey, a Ghanian defender.

Sylvain Wiltord has signed for Nantes!

Ederson, who missed a lot of last season through injury, is out for 2-3 months after "doing" his ligaments in last Saturday's friendly against Genk (a match they lost 3:1 with a particularly uninspiring match from Cris).

Great news for fans of the (English) Championship in France. The satellite channel "L'Equipe TV" (a sports news channel) is going to broadcast live matches from the Championship with highlights of all the other games. Unfortunately the first match chosen for the 6th August is Brighton v Doncaster.

Blimey! I didn't realise things were that bad.
There was a meeting yesterday with board members of the LFA (Ligue de football amateur) to decide who would be in the "National" league this season. For administrative (financial) reasons Gap, Grenoble (demoted to CFA2 = Div. 5), Strasbourg and Cannes were all demoted from the "National". On top of that Pacy-sur-Eure refused their "invitation" to stay in the "National" even though they were relegated. So four other clubs have been unexpectedly "promoted": Cherbourg, Epinal, Martigues and Red Star, and Bayonne who should have been relegated also stay in the "National"! Oh, one more thing, Cannes have appealed against the decision made to demote them, and the hearing takes place today.
So here is the list of the teams which "should" be in the "National" which starts on August 6th!:

GFCO Ajaccio, Bayonne, Beauvais, Besançon, Cherbourg, Colmar, Créteil, Epinal, Fréjus-St.Raphaël, Le Poiré-sur-Vie, Luzenac, Martigues, Nîmes, Niort, Orléans, Paris FC, Quevilly, Red Star, Rouen and Vannes.

I'll try and see if there's a complete fixture list, but they might be waiting for the outcome of the hearing today before publishing anything else.

This was a good article:-

Fireworks light up the skies of Northern France as Lille celebrated their first Ligue 1 title since 1954. The drinks were flowing and the fireworks had barely touched the ground when validity of Lille’s grip on Ligue 1 was already being brought into question.

Would they be able to hold onto the talents of Eden Hazard, Gervinho and Moussa Sow? Their midfield talisman Yohan Cabaye had already announced he would be joining Newcastle. Towering centre-back Adil Rami had signed in January with Valencia. Would this entertaining and exciting side fall apart?

The nation was split. Some believed Lille’s project would come crumbling apart; some believed there was more to this team than their star players. However the story of the summer would quickly change as one of the sleeping giants of French football would be awoken from its slumber and dominate the news columns for weeks to come.

On May the 30th it was announced that a company called QSI or Qatar Sports Investment had purchased 70% of Paris St-Germain. The deal instantly made the club from the capital a major player in Ligue 1 and finally gave the locals a reason to be excited about their football again.

Rumours in Paris began to gain momentum. Nearly every talented player in Europe was linked with the Parisians. The stories didn’t just involve players. Sporting Directors and new managers were also on the agenda. No one’s job was safe.

The new owners were quick to act, stating that current manager Antoine Kombouare and Director Robin Leproux would stay in their current roles. This was positive news for the club as a history of instability and constant power shifts had caused one of Europe’s big names to become no more than a mid-table club. Kombouare and Leproux had steadied the ship. The manager had played for the club in the early 90’s and was a popular figure at the Parc des Princes.

One story that wouldn’t die was the possibility that another former player would return to the club in the role of Sporting Director. Inter Milan Coach Leonardo was said to be very interested in moving away from coaching and taking a role at PSG. The position would put him in charge of recruitment, looking to build on the contacts that lead to Brazilian stars Kaka and Alexander Pato moving to Milan. They hoped Leonardo would be part of the team tasked with returning PSG to the glory days of domestic and European success.

There was a problem though. Leonardo wasn’t interested in working beside Leproux and a game of cat and mouse ensued. A press conference was arranged in Paris, thought to be the announcement from Leonardo that he would take a position at the club. In a strange turn of events the Press conference was moved to Milan and Leonardo’s words didn’t fill the Parisians with confidence.

"I have very little to say on PSG," he said. "I left Paris 14 years ago. I have a life in Milan.

"I was very happy at PSG but the truth is that there's not much to say about PSG. I don't know what's happening at the club. I know they want to buy (new players), I don't know the players...

"I only met the new owners two days ago."

This was not the positive statement the fans were looking for. In the end it seems this was only a positioning statement from the Brazilian. A mere six days later Robin Leproux was told that his services were no longer required and Leonardo was appointed “Sporting Director” and with a reported transfer budget of €100m the rumour-mill has gone into over-drive.

In the past six weeks the list of players moving to PSG has been long and distinguished. Dimitar Berbatov, Samuel Eto’o, Kaka, Eden Hazard, and Gervinho are just some of the names linked with a move to the capital. Leonardo is said to be very interested in making Brazilian Paulo Henrique Ganso his marquee signing and then compliment this with some of Ligue 1’s best talent. An offer for St-Etienne’s Blaise Matuidi has already been rejected; PSG will most likely increase their offer to land the Newcastle and Liverpool target.

Doubts remain over Kombouare’s future. It seems he will be given at least a few months to prove his worth before his position will be put under pressure. The signings of striker Kevin Gameiro and goalkeeper Nicolas Douchez were already in place before QSI took over, the spotlight remains firmly on events at the Parc des Princes, waiting for QSI to put their money where their mouth is.

Back in Lille, the champions have gone slowly about their business. Cabaye, Rami and Gervinho have all left the Stade Lille Metropole however the replacement signings of Dimitri Payet, Benoit Pedretti and Marko Basa have the fans confident of another successful season. With Champions League football being played at their home stadium for the first time it seems a few more players will be added to an already talented squad in hopes that Lille can be competitive in more than one competition.

No matter what the champions do in the coming weeks it will take a few premier names to prize the limelight off the Parisians this summer.

Bob, Nice seem to be interested in signing Giuly who was released by PSG this summer. He may be getting on (35, I think) but he's still got the talent and enthusiasm, maybe not over a full 90 minutes.

He's been a great payer in the past and has bags of experience. It seems a bit like the signing of Lilian Laslandes a couple of years ago. I don't think he is going to solve the problem of our chronic lack of goals last season, though!

Guys, We are heading out to a cottage between St Malo and Rennes on the 13th August. We arrive at about 4pm so my plan is for my son and I to drive on down to Rennes to watch Stade Rennais play PSG that evening, 7.00pm kick off. I've now found out that PSG seem to be France's version of Millwall and therefore the game is all ticket. None can be bought on the internet and they are only available from either the box office or outlets within Brittany. There is also something about having to show a Brittany address when you purchase them. The only way I can see is to either ask the English cottage owners (who live in Brittany) to buy them for us or see if we can get some in St Malo on our way down on the day of the match (assuming they are on sale on matchday). I've written to their ticket office but had no reply. It seems like a really interesting match and we don't want to miss it, do you have any idea how we could get tickets?

It was Coupe de la Ligue Round 1 at the weekend and some habit die hard. Sorry, Phil, but Clermont got off to an unsuccesful start at the only game anyone bothered turning up at, while Monaco have probably woken up to the fact that L2 might not be a walk in the park. Oh, and le Havre came back from 4-1 down at home to win 5-4 after extra time.

Yes, Menez from AS Rome and Blaise Matuidi from St Etienne. Sorry Phil!
I think Jérémy Clément has signed from PSG for St Etienne, which isn't such a bad thing. I hope the ASSE fans don't get on his back (ex Lyon player) because I think he's a quietly effective DM. I don't think ASSE will necessarily be losing out there since they'll have come out €s better in the deal.

2. OL have signed a contract for the Grand Stade de Lyon, due for completion in the second half of 2014.

1) He'll be out 4-6 weeks and will miss the CL qualifying matches. Apparently he's been carrying this injury since before he came to Lyon. Pjanic, who could have been sold this summer, will not go in the end, since all the other Lyon playmakers are out. (Ederson is injured, Grenier and Reale are in Colombia for the U-19 or U-20s WC).

2) About time too. They've brought in the same constructors (Vinci) who built the Stade de France and the new Le Mans stadia amongst others. 59,000 capacity. Unfortunately it's being built on the wrong side of Lyon. Gerland was 10 minutes away by car.

PSG are looking good at the moment. Néné, Gameiro and Ménez in a 4-3-3 or Gameiro and Hoarau up front and Néné and Ménez out wide in a 4-4-2 looks promising.

David Trézéguet is training with Monaco and looking for a Ligue 1 club for this season. Nobody seems interested even if he took a (very) big cut in his wages. Nice peut-être?

Mohamed Diarra (ex Lyon and Real Madrid) is also looking for a club and training with Lyon. He is a Lyon legend. You couldn't find a better pair of DMs in Diarra and Essien at that time. Whether he's still got it is another story. When he went Monaco (Jan - June 2011), he did absolutely nothing.

Here are a couple of quotes from him

"Trezeguet revealed the next club he joins would have to provide him with a worthwhile challenge."

Well, we'd certainly give him that.

"On a financial level, obviously France doesn't have the same means as England, Spain or Italy. But that aspect is not the most important to me."

Just as well, as I don't think we'll be matching his last salary payment

"I am keen to make sacrifices. The most important thing to me is to find a club that really relies on me."

I don't think there will be any fear on that score....

That said, he may be 32 (or so), but he could be a great signing for Nice.

In the nicest way, the french league is probably the easiest league in Western Europe to "buy". Whether it will prove to be rich and fulfilling remains to be seen.

It is clear that neither Lyon nor Marseille have much firepower at the moment, so there doesn't look to be much competition. Poor old Kombouaré though, eh? I thought he did an OK job there last year, but at the moment it is difficult seeing him make it Week 1, let alone the end of the season.

How does this all fit in with the "fair play" rules? Or don't we worry about that any more?

Interesting that you say Marseille don't have much firepower... Being one of the countries biggest teams, with a huge stadium, which is often full to capacity, you'd think the funds would be there.

BB Bob

OM have more firepower than most in Ligue 1, but with the death of their owner last year, an uncertain ownership structure and no "sugar daddy" à la PSG, they won't be able to compete. However, maybe an influx of top quality players will re-invigorate le Cahmpionnat and make the best players more likely to want to stay. In that environment, I would expect OM to develop and grow. With the crowds they get, they should be one of the big clubs in Europe. They have punched below their weight for far too long IMHO.

Yes not helped by spending much of the middle 90's in Ligue 2.

Well the thing is all these new players going to PSG they need to Gel and play well together first. No guarantee of success... There was at least 3 teams in France last year better than PSG... That's a lot to overcome in one go.

So, maybe Cinderella can go to the ball after all!

Am, working in Monaco this coming week, hoping to get along to the game on Monday night What sort of standard is Ligue 2?

Generally speaking very few of the good Ligue 2 players step up to Ligue 1, which would suggest that the level is not so good. But I've watched quite a few Ligue 2 matches over the years (merci Eurosport)and I don't reckon it's so bad. You'll find there's little hoofball too compared to the Championship.
What will surprise you however at Monaco is the lack of atmosphere. Even when they were in Ligue 1 the crowds weren't very big, so I'd hate to think how many will be there this season! Don't f*rt or b*rp in the ground, they'll stop the game and you'll be easy to find and you'll be thrown out. :D
Apart from that Monaco stinks of money. Admire the cars and the boats and there are loads of beautiful women down there too!
Amuse-toi bien!

Just back from the gaame thought it was ok for a nil all draw, although the rest of the crowd didnt agree and booed the team off at the end.

Fairly similar to the majority of Championship football really, occasional flashes of brilliance together with moments so poor they were farcical and overall a general lack of quality in the final third.

Mind you if the Monaco team had showed half as much energy, industry &urgency as the ultras near me, they would have won easily. Also their ultras had some stunning women with them, maybe the HF could organise a few loan deals?

According to L'Equipe the crowd was about 6,000! I watched most of the game on Eurosport. The atmosphere was awful. If SA Eagle had started singing a Palace song on his own, we would have come over loud and clear on the TV! In any case the crowd at this time of the year is mainly made up of holidaymakers, well that's what the commentators kept on saying.

Ligue 1 kicks off next Saturday with one of THE matches of the season, n'est-ce pas BB Bob? Nice v Lyon!
Without Claude Puel this season things can only get better and there's certainly a feeling of relief now that he's gone. Lyon's pre-season form hasn't been brilliant (now where have I seen that somewhere else?), but they played their best game so far in a friendly (which was certainly more than a kickabout) against FC Porto winning 1:2 with goals from Lisandro and recent victim of the Lyon boo-boo boys Bastos because he wanted out. It now looks as if Juventus don't want him any more so he's quite happy to sign an extension to his contract!
Rémi Garde has been trying out a 4-4-2 so that's at least one change from last year. Or is he doing this simply while Gourcuff is recovering from his operation?
Times are hard down here, and PSG are attracting all the attention on the tranfer market. Lyon's team will not be dissimilar to last year's, and Rémi Garde will be hoping that some of the many French U-20 internationals will step up. So will I!
In the absence of Gourcuff, Pjanic, Ederson and Lloris (sore throat for Hugo, injured or recovering for the others) plus Fontaine, Réale, Grenier, Tafer, Kolodziejczak, Lacazette and Faure (all at the U-20's WC in Colombia), this is the team Lyon put out against FC Porto ad which will be almost the same against Nice with Lloris in for Vercoutre who played a blinder on Sunday:

Vercoutre
Réveillère-Cris-Lovren-Cissokho
Briand-Kallstrom-Gonalons-Bastos
Gomis-Lisandro
SUBS: Pied, Sidy Kony (a DM from Mali),Belfodil

Koné, 19, has had some game time since Toulalan left seeing as Lyon are rather short in the DM department. They are hoping to get Ndinga to sign from Auxerre for around 8m€ this week.
A number of other Lyon youngsters have made sub appearances in the friendlies, but I'll have to check out their names.
Lyon have also got another much younger player who must be about 16 who scored a hatful of goals last season and then made some interesting appearances for the French U-16s in some tournament a month or so ago. Another new "Benzema" peut-être?

I don't know Abriel that well, but every little helps down on the cote d'azur. I think Nice are hoping - à la Palace - for a season of consolidation this year. We are still pretty light up front, but keeping hold of Mounier was key, and the back looks settled. Digard as captain and Faé back from injury should make our starting 11 look OK, but there isn't any great depth to the squad which is a worry. And who know where the goals are coming from, cos I don't have Mouloungui down as a 20 goal man.

Still, we beat Udinese 1-0 in our last pre-season which send us into the season in a good frame of mind. We have a good record at the Ray against Lyon, but I'm not holding my breath for this weekend. However, a bumper holiday crowd and a balmy evening might even things up a little.

This is the Udinese turnout...

More good news for Phil IMO. It looks like they'll be signing Steed Malbranque from Sunderland. He hasn't got brilliant statistics but he's a good player who should do well in Ligue 1. I reckon ASSE are building up what looks like a solid squad of players, even though I've just been reading that "légende" Janot may be on the way out, not being able to handle the competition for 1st team keeper with Ruffier. Janot is a very spectacular keeper, but Ruffier is definitely a class above IMO.

Great wikipedia profile of him:-

Jérémie Janot (born 11 October 1977 in Valenciennes) is a French footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Saint-Étienne. He has remained loyal to the club throughout his entire career, including relegations. He set a record of 1534 minutes without letting in a goal at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. He was voted "goalkeeper of the year" by L'Equipe after the 2006–07 season.
Janot is known for his hatred of Olympique Lyonnais (ASSE's traditional rivals) and thought about wearing an AC Milan kit during his match the weekend after Milan had knocked Lyon out of the UEFA Champions League.
He was considered one of the possibilities to replace the injured Grégory Coupet for the French national team, but Teddy Richert and Ulrich Ramé were called up instead, to compete with Mickaël Landreau and Sebastien Frey. In addition, youngsters Hugo Lloris and Steve Mandanda have been called up to the national team ahead of Janot, making a call-up in the near future very unlikely.

Trivia

Janot wore a full Spider-Man costume complete with his own name and kit number and club sponsors for a home match against FC Istres in 2005. He took off the mask before play began.[1]
Janot is a big fan of Brazilian MMA fighter Wanderlei Silva; Janot showed that he is a real fan of the fighter by getting tattoos on his head and arms just like Silva.

With all due respect to PSG fans, they ain't my favourite football club. Antoine Koubouaré, on the other hand, I have a lot of time for. He did a great job at Valenciennes and comes across here as a nice guy with a healthy sense of realism.

Antoine Kombouaré realises that the pressure is on for him to get results after a massive summer spending spree, but the PSG coach is keeping things in perspective and hopes his players can do the same.
This Saturday, French football will get its first glimpse of Antoine Kombouaré's star-studded PSG line-up for the season as they play host to Lorient, and the former PSG defender knows that the life expectancy of a coach at a rich club can be very short, depending on results.

'I know how it works'

"I know the rules of the game," a calm and collected Kombouaré told sports daily l'Equipe. "If we win, I stay. If we don't, then I'll be let go. I've been in this business for 30 years and I know how it works. Honestly, when the Qataris bought the club, I didn't think I'd be staying on. New owners generally like to bring in their own men. But the prince told me: 'It's you who will lead this team'. And so now here I am, at the beginning of an exciting adventure."

Kombouaré may be excited to be at the helm of the club with the league's biggest budget, but he knows that it will take time to forge his team after the arrival of seven new players and the departure of senior squad members Claude Makelele, Grégory Coupet and Ludovic Giuly.

Nothing new

"I've already experienced the kind of position we find ourselves in now, as a player when TV station Canal+ came on the scene. They bought nine or ten important players like Paul Le Guen, Laurent Fournier, Bernard Lama, Alain Roche and David Ginola... The difficult thing for coach Artur Jorge was to build a solid team, and that task is made a little more difficult for me and my staff by the late arrivals and the lack of preparation of some of the lads."

But it certainly isn't a case of starting from scratch.

UCL target

"I'm basing our efforts on our strong showing last season," said Kombouare. "We finished fourth in the league, made it to the last 16 of the Europa League, the semi-finals of the Coupe de la Ligue and the final of the Coupe de France. The next level is a Champions League finish."

So, no talk yet of winning the title - despite many pundits as well as other clubs tipping PSG as favourites - from Kombouaré.

"I have no comment on the title," he said flatly. "People can think what they want to think. To be in the running for the title, you have to have luck on your side. Last season, if Gervinho or Moussa Sow had been seriously injured, Lille wouldn't have won the title. So if Kévin gameiro or Nene get injured this time around, what do we do?"

Passing on the message

While Kombouaré is accustomed to the pressure, he now needs to make sure his players fully understand how things will change at the Parc des Princes in PSG's new era.

"The players have to understand that we've stepped up to a new level in terms of our means and our mentality," he explained. "Results are now expected, and we can't complain about it. The players have to accept that there is now much more competition in the squad. No-one has a place in the first team stitched up. [Jérémy] Ménez has just come from Roma, and he knows this, as does Nene. We need to instil this mentality."

More good news (IMHO) from Nice. I really like Didier Digard. He is much more a Championship defensive midfielder, I reckon, and isn't the best going forward. But he has a great heart and a terrific set of lungs on him. I'd love to see him in a Palace shirt, but failing that I am delighted to see him in a Nice one!

Ex-Middlesbrough man Didier Digard has capped his permanent move to Nice by being elected to the club captaincy, a duty the formidable midfielder warmed to in Saturday's 1-0 win over Udinese.
Digard had spent the last 18 months at Nice on loan from EPL side Middlesbrough, during which time his professional approach and consistent performances earned him pride of place in Nice's starting eleven.

So important had Digard become to the Nice machine that coach Eric Roy didn't hesitate to make his move to the Côte d'Azur a definitive one - for three seasons - and the players didn't hesitate to elect him as team captain.

'A great feeling'

"It's a very important turn of events," said the former PSG ball-winner. "It's a great feeling to be chosen by your teammates. It shows that my style works with this squad and that the lads have confidence in me. I'll certainly do my best to repay that confidence in full."

Words that turned out to be no idle promise as the 25-year-old delivered a stellar performance in his first hit-out as captain, Nice getting the better of Udinese - who finished fourth in last season's Serie A and who had already accounted for Bordeaux and Marseile this pre-season - by one David Hellebuyck goal to nil.

"It was a pleasure to watch him play," said Roy. " That's the sharpest we've seen him play in his whole 18 months at Nice."
