mais pas de joker, hein?

I was following some of it last night on l'equipe. Ospina didn't have the best of games, by all accounts.

Went out to pick up our daughter who'd been staying at a friend's up in the Monts du Lyonnais for the last few days. The BBQ was supposed to last long enough to see me home for the 2nd half of the Palace game. Unfortunately (or maybe not seeing as what happened!) a game of pétanque lasted a little too long, and we crawled in to see the end of the 1st half of Nissa v Lyon. Bafé had just scored Lyon's 2nd. Lyon looked back to their pre-Puel best. Nothing special, but they controlled the game apart from maybe the opening 20 minutes (from what I read this morning). Mouloungui missed an open goal which could have brought Nissa back into it at 2:3. A dreadful miss really, but apart from that he was the only real threat. Ospina, TBF, made a couple of good saves, but he often remains rooted to the goal-line, and he spilled a shot which caused the corner which led to Bafé's goal.

As for PSG ... Lorient are their bogey team, but they're not the only ones.

Dijon actually played some good football but defensively they were very naive. I think they'll do OK this season.
St Etienne did well against an admittedly weak Bordeaux defence. They showed all the battling qualities that seem to be missing down at SP. The Bordeaux players were never given a second on the ball with two or three "Verts" hassling the player on the ball all the time.
As for my 6th place, and I quote, "On fera les comptes à la fin de la saison!"

Hope you're enjoying your holiday over here Phil despite the krap weather we've been having!

I didn't know them before, but the wonderful thing about une crise is that it really helps you expand your vocabulary......

Nice to see Remy on the score sheet - another player who improved immensly once he had a spell in the sunshine - and I'm hopeful that one day Benzema might fulfil all of that potential. A few less patatas bravas and who knows? Maybe he needs another spell at Lyon, eh mon ami?

Mourinho is really counting on Benzema this season. Pre-season he's got 7 goals in as many matches plus assists.

The France - Chile game was very good for an August friendly. Rémy had a good game (I think he'll score a lot for marseille this season. :(), so did Benzema, Martin, Nasri and M'Vila (I'd love to see him at Lyon or SP :D). He'll end up at a big club in 2012-2013.

Lyon are going to sign Bakary Koné! Not him, another one! :D He's a young (23) CB who plays for Guingamp. (We're having trouble finding a CB for the Palace, and look at what Lyon have come up with!)
Cris is injured again, as is Mensah, so that leaves Lovren! The next two Lyon CBs (Faure and Fontaine) are in Colombia at the U-20s WC. They're hoping to get him in time for this weekend's game and especially in time for the CL qualifying round next week.

That's about two of the old Baky Konés, I reckon!

It's a big step up from En Arriere Guingamp to A Chmpions League Qualifier. I hope he's up to it, as CL qualification is even more important than usual for Lyon this year.

Not exactly Championnat, but France defeated Nigeria in the U-20s WC 3:2 aet. The best two players in my totally objective opinion were Lacazette, who scored two of the goals, and Grenier, who ran the show from midfield.
Rémi Garde will be very pleased to have his 6 U-20 players back in a couple of weeks, especially the two I've just mentioned.

From CL finalists a few years ago to this. I watched their woeful display ( Monaco 1 - 2 Reims) on Monday. 6,000 in the ground. The commentators were wondering what their crowds would be like come November/December if they continue playing like that. On a positive note they won the Coupe Gambardella (= the French Youth Cup) last season.

I was disapointed with st etienne result yesterday, although they had a man sent off.I watched last weeks game and thought they looked alot stronger physically this year and really up for it,but maybe with a tad less flair.

Clermont had a great draw on friday, coming from behind against an inform bastia.Could this be the year??

The Lyon v Montpellier game was very good. Montpellier probably didn't deserve to lose. They played some very good football, but at times were very/too physical (I'm not talking about Lisandro's injury which was an accident with Hilton falling on Lisandro). Lloris kept Lyon in the game with a string of brilliant saves. Lyon played well too and you can see that the players are enjoying themselves again after three season of "torture"!
Lille v Marseille was also fun again with lots of goals "comme d'habitude". Marseille are scoring lots but conceding a lot too.
Pastore looks the business at PSG. He's not yet fully match fit, but he's a class act.

Galtier had a few problems getting a team together what with injuries and suspensions. Plus they had a man sent off as you said and Sinama Pongolle got injured. Malbranque didn't play either, and according to l'Equipe this morning, he is going to retire from football immediately (having played just the one game for les Verts) for personal reasons!

Clermont and Palace are having very similar starts to their season! :)

In the other table ...

Pentecôte could be a good signing for you. I think he was a prolific goalscorer in Toulouse's youth teams and reserves but has always been injury-prone. Mind you l'Equipe only gave him 4/10 for Saturday's "perf"! Give him time ...

As for the "loto sportif" championship, I've been very inconsistent having two good weeks and two bad ones. Mais je n'ai pas dit mon dernier mot, Jean-Pierre! :D

Tuesday's draw for the Coupe de la Ligue's round of 16, to be played on October 25 and 26, has pitted arch-rivals Saint-Etienne and Lyon against each other while two-time reigning champions Marseille will face off against L2 side Lens.
The round of 16 will see Ligue 1's six sides competing in Europe (Lille, Marseille, PSG, Lyon, Sochaux and Rennes) enter into the competition, with the standout fixture of Saint-Etienne versus Lyon topping the bill.

Rhône derby on the cards

The perennial arch-rivals from opposite sides of the Rhône river will face off at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard for a place in the quarter-finals just days before they clash at the Stade de Gerland in their Week 12 league fixture. Similarly, Dijon will play host to PSG days after their Week 11 league clash at the Parc des Princes.

Holders Marseille will take on L2 side Lens, who narrowly defeated Evian 1-0 in the round of 32, as they kick off their campaign to win the Coupe de la Ligue title for an unprecedented third consecutive time.

The full draw for the Round of 16:

AS Saint-Etienne - Olympique Lyonnais
AJ Auxerre - SM Caen
Dijon FCO - Paris Saint-Germain
Lille OSC - CS Sedan-Ardennes (L2)
Le Mans FC (L2) - Stade Rennais
Olympique de Marseille - RC Lens (L2)
Montpellier HSC - FC Lorient
OGC Nice - FC Sochaux-Montbéliard

A very easy win for Lyon. Marseille looked poor and lacking in confidence. Their young Spanish highly rated (by Godders at least) right-back César Azpilicueta had a mare especially in the first half.
Lyon are playing with smiles on their faces. No Lisandro, no Gourcuff and no Cris. Et alors? Aulas did some shrewd business during the transfer window. Koné looks very good considering his lack of experience and seems willing to learn, and Gueida Fofana could be a bargain. He's still only young but seems very mature. There's Dabo too who can play in defence or as a DM. Gonalons has also come on in leaps and bounds and looks to have benefited from playing alongside Toulalan for a couple of seasons. It's obviously early days yet but a good start to the season nevertheless.

I am not expecting much change out of tomorrow night's trip to the Parc for Nissa, it must be said. Lyon with a tricky trip to struggling Caen and OM home to new boys Evian. ASSE vs TFC would be my choice of viewing, I think (cue a 0-0 bore fest).

PSG owners facing up to magnitude of challenge

http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/multimedia/archive/00211/95963298_Pastore_211927c.jpg

The latest beneficiaries of the “overnight sugar daddy” effect outspent everybody else in Europe last summer, just as their precursors — Chelsea and Manchester City — did in their first full window with access to oil money. Paris Saint-Germain’s £72.7 million net spending spree, made possible by the new majority owner, the Qatari Investment Authority, dwarfs anything French football has seen since the days of Bernard Tapie’s Marseilles two decades ago.

Javier Pastore was, at £37 million, the jewel in the crown, but PSG also picked up goalkeepers (Salvatore Sirigu and Nicolas Douchez), defenders (Milan Bisevac, Diego Lugano), midfield players (Blaise Matuidi, Momo Sissoko) and forwards (Jérémy Ménez, Kevin Gameiro).

The newcomers join a side who finished fourth last season and lost just one player, Ludovic Giuly.

Sound a bit like Claudio Ranieri’s last season at Stamford Bridge, the first of the Roman Abramovich era? In the sense that you have suddenly to integrate a clutch of big names into an existing team, it certainly is. The difference though is that at least Ranieri got to choose the new signings. In the case of Antoine Kombouaré, PSG’s holdover manager, you get the impression that the club’s transfer activity is the work of Leonardo, the club’s new director of football.

The handsome Brazilian was a manager himself, of course, right up until the end of June, when he left Inter to join PSG in his new role. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that, without the promise of massive investment (and a massive say in how that investment would be allocated) he would not have left Inter in the way he did (ie, without getting the payoff that inevitably follows sackings).

Predictably, from the day Leonardo arrived, speculation was rife that Kombouaré’s days were numbered. The Frenchman’s tricky task — blending the new faces and those who got PSG to their best finish since 2004 last year — was made tougher by a lacklustre start: just one point in their first two outings. Things have picked up somewhat since then but, if the Qatari goal is to turn PSG into a continental juggernaut, the challenge remains formidable.

In the age of Financial Fair Play, it’s not just a question of buying success. You need to grow revenues, because having a wealthy patron simply write a cheque won’t cut it any more. On top of that, France has its own domestic version of FFP, the Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion, whose rules, in many respects, are tighter than Uefa’s.

The good news, of course, is that PSG, along with Marseilles, have the widest fan base in France. Their location as the only big club in a wealthy European capital is another huge bonus: Paris’s metro population is greater than London’s and, unlike the British capital with its proliferation of top clubs, football-wise PSG are the only show in town. They boast a reasonable stadium (the 48,000-seat Parc des Princes) and, should they outgrow it, the 81,338 capacity Stade de France is a short ride away along the Périphérique.

The bad news?

Well, despite enjoying a good season, PSG averaged crowds of just 29,317 last year. Paris may be the birthplace of Fifa, but, when it comes to football, passions run relatively lukewarm.

For a decade, between the mid-1960s and the mid-1970s, there was no top-flight football in the City of Lights. In fact, while some pockets in France are as passionate as they come, this is easily the least football-obsessed among nations with big domestic leagues.

One example? The French government mandates that the Tour de France be on free-to-air television. There is no such rule for football highlights, which may explain why unless you subscribe to pay-TV or rely on YouTube, you won’t see all the weekend goals in Le Championnat. Furthermore, Canal+, which holds the domestic TV rights, has fewer than six million subcribers, considerably less than their equivalents in the UK, Spain or Italy.

And that helps to explain why Marseilles, the club who earned the most from domestic TV last season, made marginally more than Blackpool, the bottom club in the Premier League TV-wise.

Of course, all this is some way down the road.

For now, the objective is to deliver the French title, which has been missing since 1994, grow the PSG brand and field a team that can make headway in Europe. Whether it will be sustainable over time is as much down to the folk in the commercial department and the accountants as it will be to the players on the pitch.

Interesting point at the end about how OMs TV revenues were about the same size as Blackpools! It is a disgrace that there is no football (apart from interenationals) on French free TV. How does the LFP expect to develop the game? The answer, of course, is that it doesn't, I guess!

What a superstar you are, eh?

I saw that this weekend is free tickets for the ladies too. I think the new owner (Riviere, I think) is trying to, à la Palace, build a greater sense of community at the club which has to be a good thing. I'm not down there this weekend (malheureusement) and, sorry, don't really know anyone who might be able to use it.

Sunday nights result:-

LOSC Lille Métropole3 - 1 Olympique Lyonnais

Rudi Garcia (Lille coach): "Lyon troubled us with its attack in the first half but we played well in the second. What's more, we scored on set pieces, things on which we are working hard after showing a real lack of efficiency in that areaearlier in the season."

Rémi Garde (Lyon coach): "I'm pretty disappointed to have lost, obviously, and disappointed that my team conceded twice from set pieces. I think we produced some very good football at times, especially when we opened the scoring and with Gomis' big chance, which could have changed the course of the match. Sure, we lost, but there was still a lot of promise in my lads' performance. The club changed its strategy at the beginning of the year and our squad doesn't necessarily have a lot of experience in every sector. Obviously, tonight's result isn't a good one in terms of the league table; defeat hurts when you're ambitious. I don't think my team have got the best out of themselves yet and we still have one or two important injury absences to deal with. But conceding twice from set pieces against Madrid and twice tonight is a lot. Too much."

After watching Palace's win against Southampton on Tuesday, I got back in time to see Lyon win against St Etienne (désolé Phil). Lyon deserved their win although this won't be the talking point in days to come. Lyon were IMO justifiably awarded a penalty in the 2nd half, and as Bastos was preparing to take it, a shower of objects plus smoke bombs were lobbed on to the pitch. The ref stopped play twice, the second time taking all the players off. Play finally resumed 9 minutes later with Bastos scoring but very stupidly overdoing the celebrations in front of the ASSE Ultras which caused a lot of handbags amongst the two teams of players. A quick word on the very young (29 years old) but excellent ref who controlled the situation remarkably well.

Was hoping for a win,but top of the league Weh hey.

I was in france this week and saw the st etienne lyon match.Pretty intense stuff. One set of ultras had massive banners saying non to business football and non a la coupe de la ligue. and the bomb and missiles for the penalty were interesting, though i think the ref overeacted.Bastos will surely be in trouble for his celebration, which could've started a riot under the circumstances.

Lyon 2-0 Saint-Etienne

This was a real feisty affair. The turning point (unbelievably) of the game was the red card given to the Lyon (and ex-ASSE) player Dabo for a knee-high studs-up tackle that fortunately didn't cause too much damage to the ASSE player. Lyon stepped up a gear, and the ASSE players really couldn't cope. Briand scored the first (his third in three) and Gourcuff finished the game off with a delightful (Zidansque) goal in the closing stages.
Lyon will be in better heart after this performance but they've got a lot of players out through injury: Bastos, Lisandro, Pied, Grenier, Mensah, Cissokho (who went off yesterday) and reserve keeper Vercoutre (Lyon's 3rd keeper, Lopez, a Portuguese U-21 international, is also injured). Lyon's keeper on the bench will be an 18 year-old Swiss kid unless Joël Bats dons the gloves again!

I really should keep more of an eye on Ligue 1, especially as it's a really interesting league.

Has Bafetimbi Gomis really only had 6 caps? He made his debut just before or during Euro 2008.

What's the concensus on Cadric Carrasso? I have always followed his career since his brief spell with us in 2001/02. He seems like a decent keeper whenever I have seen him but he seems firmly rooted behind Lloris and Mandanda in the France ranks.

http://www.ligue1.com/images/photos/articles/web/fiche//1112_UK_CDL_Nice_Lille_Roy_Marsiglia.jpg

Eric Roy has been stood down as Nice coach, club president Jean-Pierre Rivère moving him to the position of general manager while former assistant coach René Marsiglia takes the helm of the struggling Côte d'Azur club.
After narrowly beating the drop last season Nice are once again struggling in the current campaign, sitting 17th on the table with just two wins to their name, and on Tuesday president Rivère took decisive action to turn things around by relieving Eric Roy of his duties as first-team coach.

History repeating

Former Marseille and Lyon player Roy will now act as general manager for Les Aiglons, a position similar to the one he occupied at the club before stepping in to replace coach Didier Ollé-Nicolle as the side endured troubled times not dissimilar to the situtation they currently find themselves in.

Rivère has named René Marsiglia, Nice's assistant coach under Roy, to take charge of the first team and "push them towards victory" until a more permanent solution is decided upon. Marsiglia faces his first test in leading Nice away from the relegation zone on Saturday night when tenth-placed Saint-Etienne come calling at the Stade du Ray.

Lots of rumours about this over the last few weeks, but a shame nonetheless. I think Roy did a good job with not much, but there you are.

Le Roy est mort, vive le roi!

Crisis management à la niçoise. The squad is so thin and, without some serious investment, it is difficult seeing the club do anything other than struggle against relegation. When you talk to people down there, the question is always what on earth the ckub is going to do with a big new, swanky stadium? They struggle to get 10,000 as it is. So, you come back to the need for an owner with long arms and short pockets.

Riviere - the new owner - has talked a lot about making funds available but so far it has really just been a bunch of free transfers of slightly stale, older players. There isn't any sense of youth and enthusiasm that surrounds Palace at the moment, thats for sure.

Thank goodness for that. I misread that as Tony Parker doing a "pipe"!!!!!

I hope I pick up on my predictions this weekend as I've lost a lot of ground recently.

I shouldn't worry. It's a marathon not a sprint and I'm sure we'll even out over the next few months. Now, if only you had put Rennes down as an away win this week.......

A bore draw in Toulouse, but probably a good point for Téfécé. But at le Gerland, a bad night at the office for les Gones. I tried watching it online, but some awful arabic commentary and a very patchy connection made it difficult to follow. I settled for a nice crisp vin d'Alsace rather than a Beaujolais Nouveau (spit)!

Poor Bob. That was one "électrochoc" that didn't work out. At least Marseille lost too. Rennes looked very good against a poor Lyon team without Gonalons as DM (injured playing for France). Gourcuff dropped back to replace him, looked good when he had the ball but unfortunately didn't win the ball enough. Lisandro and Bastos both came on but they will need a little time to get back into the swing of things. It's Lyon's CL "final" on Tuesday where they'll need to beat Ajax if they want to finish 2nd in their group.

I'm really hoping PSG blow it,as i find lique 1 quite open, with different teams winning the title and in the shake up every year, but the money they are spending is changing that.

Tomorrow nights classique between Marseille and PSG is also a game with some va-va-voom about it. Marseille have been a shadow of themselves this year and PSG have spent more than the rest of the league combined. Still maybe a rocking velodrome can put the fear of god up the dirty parisiens. PSG need the points to keep ahead of a surprisingly resilient Montpelier team who keep on delivering the goods

Good week for French football there. Only one of the three teams seemed likely to qualify in the CL, and in the end Lille were the only team to fail. Marseille did well thanks to a flash of brilliance from Valbuena in the dying minutes, and then there was Lyon:

Inspired by Bafétimbi Gomis' four goals, Lyon produced a flabbergasting 7-1 win over Dinamo Zagreb which, in combination with Real's 2-0 win over Ajax, saw OL beat the odds and qualify for the Champions League last 16.

UEFA Champions League, Matchday 6

Group D

Dinamo Zagreb 1 - 7 Lyon

A stellar four-goal performance from France striker Bafétimbi Gomis was at the heart of Lyon's miraculous passage to the Champions League last 16, Rémi Garde's men coming from a goal down at half time against ten-man Dinamo Zagreb to pile on an incredible six second-half goals and secure a ninth-straight appearance in the competition's knockout rounds.

Certainly, OL would not have gone through had Real Madrid not beaten Ajax - OL's nearest rivals for second place in Group D - by three goals, but nothing should be taken away from the enormity of Lyon's achievement in Croatia.

Gomis provides hope

At half time things were looking grim for Lyon who, despite Gomis' levelling the scores (44') following Mateo Kovacic's opener (40'), and despite being faced by just ten men after ex-Monaco man Jerko Leko was sent off for a second yellow (28'), didn't look up to the task of producing the seven-goal swing in their goal difference they needed to pip Ajax to second place.

Garde's men had dominated most of the first term without causing any real danger in the Zagreb defence, but almost immediately after the break, they hit their straps with Maxime Gonalons opening the floodgates as scrambled home Jimmy Briand's flick-on to the far post (47').

Wildest dreams

What followed was most likely beyond the expectations for the French club, whose usually ambitious president Jean-Michel Aulas had made clear before the game that he had no problems at all with his side fighting it out in the Europa League.

A minute after Gonalons' strike, Gomis struck again, slotting Jimmy Briand's through-ball home as the two OL forwards hit on the counter (48'), then completed his hat-trick three minutes later, smashing home Aly Cissokho's low cross (51') to make it 4-1.

With Real Madrid up two goals over Ajax in the other game, OL still needed two more goals to go level on goal difference with their Dutch rivals, and within 19 minutes of dominant football, they had them.

Gomis' 4th the clincher

Argentine star Lisandro Lopez hit an angled shot between Dinamo 'keeper Ivan Kelava's legs with almost his first touch after coming on (64') and then in the 70th minute Gomis bagged his fourth, again teed up by a Cissokho cross across the face of goal, to make it 6-1.

With this scoreline, Lyon's miraculous qualification was secured, but Garde's men weren't about to leave anything to chance, the excellent Jimmy Briand capping his generous performance with Lyon's seventh, beating Kelava one-on-one after a neat through-ball from Lisandro (76'). Lyon took no risks for the remainder of the match, opting to pass the ball around in midfield until the final whistle - and news of Real's third unanswered goal in Amsterdam - made their dramatic qualification official.

Not a good week at all, compounded by the loss at Auxerre. Oliech was really good, but we deserved at least a point. Bring on Ellie Baup, the baseball hatted TV pundit and unemployed manager. The reality is, though, that the squad is just too thin.

Obviously we sent our man who normally "negotiates" our away games to Zagreb at the special request of a M. Aulas. His flight was delayed, so he missed the start of the game, unfortunately, but I was pleased to see he did his usual job for you, mon ami!

A good result for Lyon last night too, keeping them in with the pack at the top. WHat a difference a change of manager makes, eh? Still room for improvement, but there is a fluency about les Gones this season that was so missing under the sterile managership of Puel.

Good news for Phil's Clermont again last night even though Clermont's game was called off due to the storm blowing parts of their ground away. Reims and Guingamp both lost. Clermont's game has been rescheduled for 3 o'clock this afternoon with fans having to huddle into just the one stand "still standing"!
No problem with segregation over here. Away fans in Ligue 2 don't travel. When they do, they're given the freedom of the city!

Lyon 2:1 Evian

A scrappy affair. Evian made it very hard for a tired-looking Lyon team. Both teams finished with ten men on the pitch with red cards being handed out. Lyon could have been down to 9 men (plus a penalty against them!) if the ref had seen a handball on the line from Réveillère. I'll take the three points.

Montpellier have done really well this year after a pretty solid season last year. I am sure that kabbott can give some more detail, but they seem a very well organised club. Whether they will be able to cope with the inevitable pillaging of their squad is another matter altogether!

Rennes have got a canny manager in Antonetti, the ex-Nice managager. He is from Corsica and mad as a sack of frogs, but does put out a good team. Rennes, too, are a well funded club. The owner is François Pinault, of PPR (Galeries Lafayette, La Redoute) fame, which gives Rennes a glamorous fan in the form of Selma Hayak. Rennes have got a great youth academy which Lyon regularly raid....

:hi:

Nothing new at Montpellier. They were promoted from Ligue 2 at the end of the 2008-2009 season and have progressed not through big spending but rather through playing a nice brand of football with a team composed of experienced players and others who have come through their "académie".

Their "Président" is a Lyon-born chap called Louis Nicollin who made his fortune with his refuse-collecting business. He's a real character who certainly doesn't know what PC means! To say he's outspoken would be the understatement of the year. He bought the club in 1974 when they were in the "Division d'Honneur Sud-Est" (a regional equivalent of our Div 4 at that time) and it took them only 8 years to get to Ligue 1. They've been a bit of a yoyo team since then.
In the 1990-91 season they reached the QF of the UEFA Cup only to be knocked out by a certain Manchester Utd who qualified by ... :sob:
Their success this season is down mainly to a CF they bought from FC Tours by the name of Olivier Giroud who is quickly making a name for himself. He may well be France's second best CF behind Benzema possibly now in front of Gameiro (PSG), Gomis (Lyon) and others.
Montpellier also have a decent (young) 'keeper by the name of Joudren, and other young players who have come through their ranks such as Stambouli, Saihi, Aït-Fana, Koita and Cabella.
Montpellier won the Coupe Gambardella (= the French Youth Cup) in 2009 against Nantes and are renowned as having one of the better "académies" in France along with Sochaux, Monaco, Lyon, Rennes and St Etienne.

EDIT: former Montpellier players include Eric C*ntona, Laurent Blanc, Roger Milla and Carlos "the hair" Valderrama.

Really like watching Stade Rennais really nice brand of football and exciting flair players.

As for Rennes, they really are going through a very bad patch at the moment. They were absolutely hopeless in the Europa League and their Ligue 1 form isn't too good either.
As BB Bob said, like many teams they have to sell their best players to keep their heads above water, the most recent examples being having to sell Sow to Lille and Jimmy Briand to Lyon. They've got two players I really like: M'Vila, who will probably be the next player off in the summer and Jonathan Pitroipa who is not only very talented but also inconsistent.

Well, Lille 4:4 Nice was the game to watch tonight.
I watched a woeful "Puelesque" first half performance from Lyon. In the second half Lyon fought back, deserved a draw, but the equaliser just wouldn't come. It'll be very interesting to see what PSG do now.

Another big scalp to Valenciennes to add to the PSG result the other day. Takes the shine off a fantastic performance from Nice in Lille, but a point there is always a result for les Azureens and its enough to take us out of the bottom 3.

Happy New Year!

So top of the table wasn't good enough for Leonardo and Ancelotti has taken over at PSG. I hope that Kombouaré ands up with a decent job after this. He did a very good job at Valenciennes and steadied a rocky PSG ship when he took over.

Elsewhere, former Nancy coach Pablo Correa has taken over at Evian. At Nancy he was famous (well, with me anyway) for playing such a high tempo pressing game that the players would all flake out after 75mins.

And one little piece of Lyon news

Cissokho: 'I’m happy at Lyon'

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has made no secret of his desire to sell a couple of players in the next few months. Left-back Aly Cissokho, frequently linked with a move in the French press, says he is happy at OL.

Cissokho, 24, joined from Porto for 15 million euros in 2009 on a five-year deal and will talk his future through with the club this week. French sports daily L'Equipe claims OL would be willing to sell for 10 million euros and the once-capped French international has made no secret of his desire to play in the Premier League one day.

Cissokho said: "I'm happy here. I'm first choice at a club that’s still in the Champions League. The coach has placed his confidence in me. I'm not in a situation where I'm not playing. There has been nothing serious on the transfer front for now. It's been like this since the last window. A lot of things are said but I try not to pay too much attention to them."

Lyon returned to training on Sunday ahead of a friendly at Ligue 2 club Bastia on Wednesday. French international goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is ill and will not link up with his team-mates until midweek.

With PIP silicone implants and Niort, its not been the best of weeks for fan of Brest.

Looking at todays games, I was really surprised to see Strasbourg in CFA2 - presumably relegated for financial irregularities. Do you know if they are still playing in the same stadium or are they in some park now with berets for goal posts?

Lyon coach Remi Garde claims he is in no rush to bring in defensive reinforcements, despite seeing his options severely depleted.

Veteran centre-half Cris is nursing a thigh problem, while John Mensah and Bakary Kone are readying themselves for African Cup of Nations duty with Ghana and Burkina Faso respectively.

Garde is fully aware that he is to be left short on numbers, but he refuses to buy into the belief that he must look to acquire cover during the winter transfer window.

He believes tactical tinkering can help Lyon through a testing time, allowing them to put any money that is made available for fresh faces to better use elsewhere.

"Reinforcements? We are studying the situation," he told L'Equipe.

Balance
"The easiest thing to do would be to reinforce the squad to make up for those absences. But you can't then play everybody and the group could lose its balance.

"We must not forget that the African Cup of Nations could be over for the likes of Kone at the end of January.

"I am also waiting to see how quickly Cris can recover.

"We would prefer to manage the situation with the squad we already have, perhaps playing some midfielders in defence."

Lyon's defence is lacking a few players at the moment, as you mentioned the other day Bob. But things have worsened since then.

Lyon's back four is normally composed of:

Réveillère - (any two of) Cris/Lovren/B.Koné - Cissokho

... but

Réveillère - injured
Cris - injured
Lovren - injured
Koné - at the African Cup of Nations
Cissokho - injured

... plus

Mensah - at the African Cup of Nations
Dabo (who can play RB or LB) - suspended after his red card against Lille.

With all the central defenders out, Rémi Garde has twice played with Gonalons (normally a defensive midfielder) and Samuel Umtiti (a very highly-regarded 18 year-old left back).
For some inexplicable reason Garde hasn't played Sébastien Faure and Thomas Fontaine who played in France's U-20 World Championships last summer. Obviously he doesn't rate them too much, so they may be off or at least loaned out before the "mercato" is over.

Tonight Timothée Kolodziejczak ("Kolo"), who Lyon snapped up from Lens in spite of Man. Utd. wanting him three years ago when he was 17, will play his first game of the season at LB. He had gone off the radar after refusing to sign a new contract, upset at the little consideration he was being given. Lamine Gassama may also come in at RB for his first game of the season too. He, too, went down the pecking order when Dabo arrived last summer. Against Lille the Brazilian left winger, Bastos, dropped back to play at RB () after Dabo's red card and did very well considering, so who knows?

There aren't many defensive midfielders left either with Gonalons dropping back into defence and the other Koné (Sidney?) at the African Cup of Nations

On the bench tonight will be three very inexperienced players in Medhi Zeffane, Amos Youga and ?.Ferri. I must admit I know nowt about these three so I'll be doing some research this afternoon.

All this against Montpellier tonight, the Ligue's highest scorers ...

Really slacked on Le Championnat this season - how are my Girondins playing this year Monsieur K? Looks like a very inconsistent season from the outside.

Nobody seems to be able to explain why Bordeaux aren't doing it, and haven't been able to do it since Laurent Blanc's departure was announced a couple of seasons ago now.
During the "mercato" they have so far brought in an unknown Brazilian RB, Mariano, (does that mean Chalmé is on the way out?), and the quite good Polish international Obraniak from Lille who needs game time to make sure of his place in the Polish line-up for the European Championships. He was more often than not on the bench at Lille.
Gillot is a good coach but even he doesn't seem to make things tick. People generally tend to say that life in Bordeaux is too "comfortable" and that there's not enough pressure on the players to perform. It's that or PSG or Marseille where there tends to be too much pressure. You can't win really.
