Nice are strapped for cash and have got to cut their wage bill. Moulounghui has gone off to the Gulf, Mounier to Montpellier - a v. good signing imho - and a host of players have left. An €8m shortfall, though, means that any incoming moves are likely to be free transfers or loans.
On the plus side, the youth team look in good shape, but I am not sure how ready they are for the first team yet. And quite who is going to stick the ball in he net I have no idea. Puel could have a tricky first season. Let's hope he can call in some favours and get some fresh blood in.
It looks like being another interesting season on the Cote d'Azur.....

Didier Deschamps and Marseille have parted company. Whether he will take over as manager of France or not is the question on most peoples lips. There don't seem to be too many candidates around for the job.
As for next Marseille manager, who would want that job at the moment?
BTW some press comment over here about our favourite son of Nice, Hugo Lloris, being made available - at the right price, of course - by Aulas. Plenty of interest I would have thought for a frenchman who didn't disgrace himself at the Euros.

Give the job to José Anigo, local "minot" and sh*t stirrer behind the scenes for years. He's probably one of the reasons why DD left.
Mais quelle coïncidence! Le Président, Laaurent Blanc, has left the French national team, opening the door for DD (another one from France '98) to step in. This smells more of a "magouille" than a festering "bouillabaisse"! Bonnes vacances! :D

Hugo Lloris is a top, top keeper. He'd be a great buy for any team.
Shame Blanc's gone. He's a really good manager. Always thought he was building towards 2016 on home soil.

François Clerc has joined St Etienne. Good news for you there Phil.
Spurs have offered 15m€ for Hugo Lloris, Lyon are holding out for 20m€. He'll be off in the next couple of days for 17/18m€ IMO.
Bob, your mate, "l'homme à la casquette", Elie Baup, has become coach at l'OM. I wonder how long he'll last there before Anigo starts stirring his sh*t again.
And for the French national team ...
... la clé Deschamps :D

A good signing for ASSE. Clerc fell out with Puel at Lyon - who didn't? - and Nice were glad to get his salary off the books. By all accounts, Ospina is off too.
Who will Lyon get to replace Lloris? Mandanda? Carruso?

I doubt it will be Mandanda. Carruso maybe! I think Ospina was mentioned the other day, and there's Ruffier too (from St. Etienne).
EDIT: Benoit Costil has also been mentioned.

GARDE: 'REMAIN AMBITIOUS'
OL boss Rémi Garde has said that the former champions need to keep aiming high despite the changing financial circumstances of the club and uncertainty surrounding new recruits and the future of 'keeper Hugo Lloris.
Currently in the thick of pre-season preparations in the French Alps resort of Tignes, Garde is working on more than tactics and formations, making it clear this week what he is expecting from his players as they look to improve on an inconsistent performance last season as they finished fourth, ten points behind third-placed Lille.
"To secure a starting spot this season, my players will need humility, simplicity and team spirit," he declared. "Those who don't follow these guidelines will find themselves in a tough spot."
Tough times
Stern words, but less so than those that came from Jean-Michel Aulas earlier in the week, the club president hitting out at certain players whose attitudes 'ruined' the atmosphere in the squad last season as OL missed out on a place in the Champions League for the first time in over a decade.
"We had some tough times last season," tempered Garde, who took the reins at the seven-time French champions at the beginning of last season after Clause Puel was shown the door. "Especially because certain players, who had had some much easier times here at the club in the past, had attitudes that were out of step with the changing reality of the club. This disparity in our approaches prevented us from having more positive dynamic."
Top-three target
So as Garde looks to forge his men into a team ahead of the beginning of the new season, he is looking to reset the clocks but this could prove difficult as OL's dealings in the summer transfer market are yet to click into gear.
"Sometimes the economic realities supercede the sporting ones," he admitted. "But we need to remain ambitious and aim for a top-three finish."
Lloris the key
At the top of the list of transfer issues is the future of 'keeper and France captain Hugo Lloris, who is all but certain to leave the club. The in-demand glovesman could pick up a tidy price and allow Garde the finances to move on his reported targets - Clément Chantôme, Mamadou Sakho (both PSG) and Benjamin Corgnet (Dijon), but for the moment Garde has little choice but to instil his values in his current squad.

Yes our prediction contest is back on line, giving us the opportunity once again to bask in our ignorance and reveal just how bad we are at predicting football results in Ligue 1. Mind you, with the amount of money PSG have spent in the off-season, there looks to be at least one banker each week....
For those that want to join, we have used the competition set up on the www.ogcn.net website for the last couple of years. Click on Pronos on the top right, and register there. We set up a CPFC BBS mini league within it last year. I don't know whether that has carried over or not, but we'll see how we go.

Good win for Lyon against Montpellier in the Trophée des Champions in New York on Saturday evening. Gourcuff was MOM and looked pretty healthy as opposed to his usual (slightly) podgy self.
Look out this season for Yassine Benzia. Hé's 17 years old and came on for the last 30 minutes and showed a lot of promise very much à la Benzema.
Olympique Lyonnais lifted the Trophée des Champions for the seventh time at the Red Bull Arena on Saturday, beating Montpellier Hérault SC on penalties after coming from behind twice in the 90 minutes.
http://www.ligue1.com/tropheeChampions/article/lyon-win-seventh-trophee-des-champions.htm
Trophée des Champions
Red Bull Arena, Harrison, New Jersey
Montpellier Hérault SC 2–2 Olympique Lyonnais (OL won 4-2 on penalties)
Jimmy Briand was the hero for OL, scoring his side's second equaliser and then netting the crucial penalty in the shoot-out as the Coupe de France holders started the new season with a fresh piece of silverware. It is the seventh time in 11 years that Lyon have won the traditional curtain-raiser to the French season, and the success will do Rémi Garde's side the power of good after what has been a difficult summer.
But the defeat was a missed opportunity for Montpellier, who led twice through a John Utaka strike and then a penalty from debutant Emanuel Herrera, only to be pegged back on each occasion, with Bafétimbi Gomis and Briand finding the net for Lyon. Lyon also missed their opening kick in the shoot-out when Gueida Fofana saw his effort saved by Geoffrey Jourdren, but more heroics from Hugo Lloris, who saved from Gaetan Charbonnier and Henri Bedimo, set Lyon up for victory.
It may not have been quite as crazy as Marseille's 5-4 win against Lille in Tangier, Morocco, 12 months ago, but this was still an enjoyable occasion, especially in the second half, for the crowd at the home of the New York Red Bulls. Traffic problems meant there were a lot of empty spaces inside the 25,000-capacity venue when the game kicked off at 1500 local time, but the stadium was much fuller for a cracking second half and the subsequent penalty shoot-out.
Lisandro missing for OL
With Lisandro López missing because of a calf injury, midfielder Maxime Gonalons captained Lyon, who came into this game as underdogs against a confident Montpellier side. René Girard's men were missing two of their most important players from their title-winning season, with Younes Belhanda suspended and Olivier Giroud having departed for Arsenal. But Daniel Congre, Anthony Mounier and Herrera all made their debuts on a cloudy but hot afternoon in New Jersey.
Montpellier started the better of the two sides, and deserved their opening goal when it arrived just before the half-hour mark. Utaka broke in from the left and got a lucky ricochet off Fofana before beating Lloris with a well-struck shot from point-blank range.
Mounier, who started his career at Lyon before joining Nice, fired over soon after, but Lyon remained a threat and Fofana flashed a warning shot just wide at the other end. OL then drew level with a minute of the first half remaining when Gomis got in between Vitorino Hilton and Bedimo to head home a Yoann Gourcuff cross from wide on the left.
For all Lyon's threat going forward, they remain susceptible at the back, and they found themselves trailing again ten minutes after the restart. Gomis was penalised when a Marco Estrada free-kick struck his arm inside the area as he jumped with the wall, and Herrera sent Lloris the wrong way from the spot.
Estrada off
That looked to be that, especially after Fofana fired just over from 20 yards from a Gourcuff cut-back, but then Alexandre Lacazette picked out an unmarked Briand, who volleyed home to make it 2-2 13 minutes from time. Montpellier were then reduced to ten men when Estrada was sent off for a nasty challenge on young substitute Yassine Benzia, and Montpellier were suddenly holding on.
Lacazette failed to hit the target with the goal gaping, and Briand hit the post with an acrobatic volleyed effort, but Briand kept his cool in the shoot-out to ensure that OL would be taking the trophy back to the Stade de Gerland.

Monaco are now owned by a(nother) dodgy Russian businessman who is ploughing stacks of money into the club. They've just bought a young (18 years old) and highly thought of Argentinian by the name of Lucas Ocampos from River Plate for the tidy sum of €11m. They should walk Ligue 2 this season.

I've got a feeling it was shit or bust for clermont last year and now most of the good players have gone and it will be a long hard season.
I watched st etienne last night and was impressed.I don't think they'll challenge at the top,but they are good to watch.

Bonne rentrée!
Merci!
Teachers in on Monday, 6èmes (1st year secondary school) yesterday for a "journée d'intégration" with "picnic" and "activities" at the Parc de Gerland next to the Olympique Lyonnais training pitches. I've got a nice timetable this year. I was doing loads of overtime last year (three extra "lycée" classes) which I've dropped this year! Back to a normal 18 hours of teaching, which is why I'm sitting here typing this now. I don't work on Wednesdays and I also have Thursday afternoons off too! Plenty of time then to get the "pronos" right this season and give you a run for your money!

Punaise, it's a bit hard to keep up ...
Over here they said the French Ligue programme would never be as confusing as the English one. Well it is now with BeInSport taking a large chunk out of Canal+'s monopoly of French Ligue football. Now there are matches from Friday evening through to Sunday evening.
If any of you guys are thinking of coming over to take in a match, I advise you to check kick-off times beforehand. Anyway, this is what has happened so far before the final match tonight:

As for Ligue 2, Clermont's fans are already after their new coach's head. He's a rather original type, one who may need time to get his ideas across.
His name is Régis Brouard and he's the guy who took U.S. Quévilly to the semi-finals of the French Cup in 2010 (when in CFA = Div 4) and the quarter-finals last year, after gaining promotion to the National (= Div 3) in 2011.

Anyone else notice how Ibrahimovic seems to be taking advantage of the not interfering offside rule.
He sits in 'goal hanging' way offside position, ball gets played through to another player who puts it across to Ibra who is now level with the man and on his own.
Interesting idea. Worked twice this weekend

It's BeInSport nicking loads of matches from Canal+ :veryangry
I have Foot+ (€8/month) which allowed me to watch every Ligue match and almost every Champions' League match (the others being on TF1). BeInSport made a much better offer than Canal+ for a Ligue package. If you want to have the possibility os seeing allthe games you need both packages, Foot+ and BeInSport (€11/month)!
Streaming is the answer!
Canal+ have kept the rights to the English Premier League so I watch snippets from time to time, but most Saturday afternoons I'm on here listening to PP!

Are Lens that bad or Nantes the real deal this year?
In reply to the last question: probably a bit of both. Lens changed their coach midweek, brought in "légende" Eric Sikora and hoped for the famous "choc psychologique"! Well that didn't quite work out, did it? They've conceded 8 in their last two games.
Nantes, I believe, have unearthed, a young goalscorer. A lot of this is off the top of my head. I haven't been buying the Equipe recently due to local newsagent's closing down and I've been relying on madame kabbott to buy it for me, which she manages about once a week. :(
Another one to look out for is Kesuru (sp?) who's knocking them in for Angers maybe. He arrived very young at Nantes a few years ago and had done absolutely nothing of note until this season.

Comfortable win for Lyon this afternoon albeit by the smallest of margins thanks to a nicely-worked Gomis goal. Lyon knocked the ball around nicely at times without always looking threatening. Malbranque is certainly enjoying a new lease of life since coming back home. I'm not exactly sure what happened when he signed for ASSE at the start of last season for him to cancel his contract days later due to personal reasons. He was possibly MOM again today showing a lot of grit but also some nice touches too. Possibly another one to look out for is a certain Rachid Ghezzal, a young 20-year-old attacking midfielder, who came on in the 2nd half, although he didn't show too much in the short time he was on.

Some funny old results this weekend. Reims are going very well, but Toulouse seem to have the wind in their sails. Riviere is playing quite well there, isn't he?
Bordeaux are fading fast as are les aiglons. The Corsicans seem to be making a good fist of it as well - I don't think many people had a 4-4 draw down or had Bastia down to beat Bordeaux.
As for the pronos, I've had a pretty good run over the last couple of weeks, but I am sure it will all blow up soon (comme toujours!)

It was 3:1 to Nice after about 12 minutes!

Bien joué Bob!
FT 3:1
The score miraculously didn't change. I don't think I've seen a Lyon defence play that badly before.
What made things worse is that catastrophic Koné injured himself quite badly near the end, and then Bisevac got himself sent off.
Lyon's best player was the young keeper Lopes who performed heroics to keep the score down. It could/should have been 10!

The draw for the 7th round of the French Cup took place this week with some more than "exotic" ties in there! The number in brackets refers to the league they're in. A lot of the leagues between 6 and 10 are regional ones and there are quite a few per level so level 10 is way down in the hierarchy.
For example there's a team called Dommartin playing. Dommartin is a leafy village in the western suburbs of Lyon whose population can only be about 1,000/2,000 and Millery-Vourles are the two villages down the road from where I live in the suburbs to the south of Lyon! To finish, these ties are all regional affairs still.

And to finish off a perfect day (especially for Phil) St Etienne do PSG at le Parc des Princes. I would have watched it (well I did see the last 15 minutes) but I was stuck on here of all places and totally forgot. PSG underperformed, but l'ASSE deserved the 3 points and are doing very well this season thank you very much. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is on fire. He went to play in Italy a couple of years ago but was far too young and is only just showing his class this season. (Let this be a warning ...). St Etienne also have a crop of good youngsters coming through. They have been finalists the last two years of the Coupe Gambardella (the French Youth Cup), losing last season's final to Nice, n'est-ce pas Bob? but I think they won the 2011 final.

There's a crazy match going on down the road at Gerland.
It's HT, it's Lyon 2:2 Bastia and Lyon are down to 10 men!
It's absolutely tipping it down here, and Lyon started off looking shaky in defence but full of attacking intent. This paid off and they went 2:0 up and it looked as if they could get a hatful. The problem however was the defence again plus Bastia looked good coming forward. They brought the score back to 2:1 and within minutes it was 2:2 after Lovren brought down a Bastia forward. A penalty was awarded, Lovren was sent off, and our old friend Rothen stepped up and put the spot-kick away to make it 2:2.
Gonalons dropped back into Lovren's CB slot and Lyon were playing 4-4-1 with a midfield of Malbranque, Gourcuff, Lisandro and Lacazette! It looked more like a 4-0-5 with those 4 plus Gomis!
More end-to-end stuff until the HT whistle with Gourcuff hitting the bar and Lisandro (I think) heading the ball in but deemed to be offside.
Looking forward to the 2nd half. Anything could happen. Garde might bring on a DM for Gourcuff or Lacazette, but I hope not! :D
EDIT: 56th minute: Red card for a Bastia defender, penalty for Lyon, 3:2!
Breathtaking! :D

Great match!

The "Big Match" between Bordeaux and Toulouse was utter dross. Bordeaux sneaked it in the final minutes through Gouffran, the only decent player on the park.

Europa League performances from the French clubs. Lyon put up another good show at Bilbao. The Lyon players who impressed me were Vercoutre who made some stunning saves, Fofana who had trouble settling in and who now seems to be getting stronger and stronger in DM alongside Gonalons or Malbranque, Gourcuff who looks fit and hungry and was good with the set-pieces and Lacazette who is playing with more consistency.
Lacazette can't be far from a call-up to the national squad IMO.
On the down side, Monzon, who hasn't had a lot of game time since arriving from Nice this summer, didn't look too good in a wide-left midfield slot in front of the young Umtiti at LB. He needs more time to settle, I think.
BB Bob
09-11-2012, 07:24 PM
Monzon is a left back, isnt he? Not playing him, then playing him out of position isn't going to do wonders for his confidence.
Still, he is an argentinian and you know what they are like. I love the brazilian joke - what is the best trade in the world? Buy an Argentinian for what he is worth and sell him for what he thinks he is worth.

Incroyable!!!!!!!!!
After listening to the mighty Eagles all afternoon, I switched on to see the end of PSG v Rennes!
Final score: PSG 1:2 Rennes
Rennes finished the game with 9 men!
Costil, the Rennes 'keeper was sent off after about 30 minutes. They pulled off a forward and brought on N'Diaye (no, not him, another one :D). Another Rennes player got sent off after 60 minutes, then they went 1:2 up and were under siege for the rest of the game. Brilliant resistance from their players. Admittedly Zlatan wasn't playing, but still ...
MOM N'Diaye!

My little local village team must have got knocked out in the 6th round, but there are still a few local teams through: Limonest (a village to the north west of Lyon), Vénissieux-Minguettes (the "banlieue" par excellence) and La Duchère, not forgetting Bourg-Perronas (a little further to the north of Lyon), with a giant-killing reputation who knocked out Auxerre! Their team often contains ex Lyon "académie" players who didn't quite make the grade but who are still pretty good!
Sorry to say it, Phil, but it looks like Clermont got unceremoniously dumped out there yesterday, obviously to concentrate on Ligue 2

A stunning performance by Lyon in dreadful conditions at Marseille:
OM 1:4 OL
With a hat-trick from Gomis and one from Malbranque. Lyon were without Lisandro andd Gourcuff too!
Malbranque as a DM is running around like a spring chicken. Gomis had his scoring boots on. Grenier and Lacazette are still young but must be knocking on the door of the French national team. Ghezzial, another kid, played well as a wide attacking player before coming off for Bastos (back after a long injury) in the closing minutes. Umtiti, who can still only be 20, played at CB and another kid, Benzia (18 maybe) came on near the end too. So many talented kids coming through here at the moment. Quite a few others, I believe, played in last week's Europa match last week. Good times at the moment in Lyon. How they got thrashed 3:0 by Toulouse the other day is beyond me. "Un accident" as they say.
Lyon will give PSG a run for their money for the title. St Etienne will be there or thereabouts too!

A well-deserved win for Lyon in the derby match. Neither team looked like they wanted to lose so the first half was quiet. Then Dabo got sent off and Lyon were down to 10 men, but still ASSE didn't throw caution to the wind. And then Bastos popped up and scored from a free-kick with the St Etienne wall and Ruffier at fault. Alonso came on near the end for ASSE only to throw a wobbly and get successive yellows, and that was that!

PSG 1:0 OL
PSG went one up just before HT hitting Lyon on the break, although Lyon had been edging it up until then on play. Lyon, who are without Dabo, Grenier, Gourcuff, Briand and Lacazette set out in a new 5-3-2 formation with Bastos at LB, and this seemed to cause PSG a few problems.
Lyon will have to come out and change things in the 2nd half, probably pushing Bastos further upfield. PSG will wait for them and try to hit them on the break. Should be an interesting 2nd half!

And a "Bonne année" to all fans of French football from down here in Lyon.
As in England it's cup weekend this weekend , but hardly cup fever after a three (I think) week break. The French cup has never enjoyed the excitement or media exposure that England does/did. The best part of this round is looking out for the ridiculous names of some of the more-or-less village teams which find themselves in the "last 64"! The lowest-ranked team is Savigneux-Montbrison (PHR) who are in the 8th (regional) division. They're in a localish derby since Savigneux-Montbrison isn't that far from St Etienne and they're up against a "quartier chaud" Lyon banlieue team, Vénissieux Minguettes (CFA2) who are in the equivalent of Division 5! Anyway here goes for the rest of the draw with plenty of upsets in store since most of the Ligue 1 teams put out very weakened sides:

I totally forgot "la reprise" last night after the winter break. I actually managed a day at school on Monday before coming down with the lurgy which knocked me for six and left me bed-ridden for most of the week, hence me totally forgetting all things footy ... You've got your timing wrong. Still 20ish minutes to go and it's 3:1 and Sochaux are down to 10 men. Nifty snowstorm 1st half! Tractors on at HT to clear it all away. This could still go either way.
Puel is certainly doing the business down there at Nice!

Yesterday evening's game at St Etienne was stopped twice to clear the snow off the pitch. I'll try and find some pictures. Some players even came onto the pitch to give a hand. It was pretty impressive. We had a little snow here but not that much.
Quality of the picture isn't brilliant, but you get an idea:

Just back from my annual school trip to Worthing!
I'd slightly lost interest in the Ligue 1 due to Lyon doing a "Palace" :(
Last Friday things picked up somewhat, and then things got better last night. As we were driving back home from the station last night and listening to the car radio, Clément Grenier scored a cracking 93rd-minute winner away to Montpellier after Montpellier had hit the post seconds before.
Good luck to Philsick's St Etienne against Rennes tonight in the final of the French "Coupe de la Ligue". St Etienne haven't won anything since their glory days all those years ago! A mate of mine will be up there in Paris cheering them on. The down-side for Phil is that Clermont are still struggling to stay in Ligue 2. Hat to BB Bob's Nice too who are having a fine season under Claude Puel!

Lyon 0:1 St Etienne
An exciting derby match so far. Ruffier pulled off an amazing save from a Lisandro header, and then les Verts scored minutes later. The game was then stopped for about 5 minutes due to flares being thrown between opposing fans. How the police let so many through amazes me. Anyway, St Etienne are hurting Lyon on the break and should really be at least 3 up by now. Lyo's 4-1-4-1 isn't working today. Les Verts might pay for their wastefulness in the second half. Lyon will probably make a few changes and go 4-3-3 or 4-4-2.

Its certainly never dull at Clermont, eh?

I watched the last 10 minutes. Always have to root for the underdogs there. Nantes thought they just had to turn up to get their three points for their promotion drive. I do believe their coach, der Zakarien (sp ?), is a former Clermont coach too. He was doing his nut in frony of his dugout! Great stuff!
I must post something out PSG too one of these days. They're all throwing wobblies at the moment especially Leonardo who should get a very hefty ban for pushing the ref after the game on the way into the changing rooms. He then has the cheek to say that he was the one who was pushed! Anyway it's all on camera.
Nasty club, PSG!
BTW Claude Puel could be in line for coach of the year for what he's done at Nice this year!

Ah. You know the cote d'azur.....a place where reputations are rediscovered (just ask loic remy). Joking aside, Puel seems to have rediscovered something in himself. Nice arent just winning, they are playing nice football which, tbh, has not been a trademark of the rather workmanlike teams that he put out at Lille and Lyon.
With a shiny new stadioum next year, it is onwards and upwards for le gym next year. Still, I will miss the Stade du Ray. Its a toilet of a stadium, but reminiscent of Selhurst for all that....a proper ground in a world of shiny baubles...
