Came from Twitter so likely bollox, that's why I'll put it here:

Everton in talks with Palace over a bid for Zaha (@Football_Scoop)
This one might have legs. Everton can't buy until they sell, though, right? So if Fellaini goes for that big price that is being thrown around, maybe they'll try to strike.

Cahill turned down a £10.3m 3 year deal to go to the Middle East a few weeks back, everyone has a price.

This from my Everton supporting Director at work who's die hard:

"Everton have no money whatsoever, and as soon as we sell anyone, the first £10m goes to the bank to fund our debt. There is absolutely no chance on this planet that we will be buying Zaha – its just lazy journalism or its Moyes looking at his options should someone be stupid enough to pay us £20m+ for Fellaini; Baines or Jagielka (and if we did sell any of those 3 we would need to spend the net £10m on replacing them in defence/midfield) as well as buying Piennar – so it still will never happen!!

It will be free transfers for us this summer (Naismith and Pranjic)"

I know some West Ham fans who really do think they are serious contenders for Zaha and Clyne, and feel they can pick between Clyne and Mathieu Debuchy no questions asked.

They need to get their head out of their arses.

I am beginning to get really bored of West Ham fans texting me to say that Wilf is having a medical with them today. I just told them that according to our own transfer rumour threads, Messi is having one with us today as well.

I have tried to Google this update and it only appears on their own fansites, muppets.

Would love a betting site to start 'Which month in the 2012/13 season will Harry replace Fat Sam?'

Will send him loopy, the insult being called Fat Sam as well as the sheer arrogant incredularity that someone would consider it possible that West Ham might replace a man good enough to manage Barcelona or Real Madrid.

I am not sure he could resist commenting.

Can't see Gold and Sullivan wearing that, they will know all about 'Arry as long-term insiders at West Ham.
Also can't see 'Arry agreeing to have Ms Brady looking over his shoulder and checking his accounts.

Know exactly what you mean, and did question it myself. However if they are struggling and looking like relegation candidates come Christmas, I think they could be tempted. They’re not adverse to throwing money at things to ensure their premier league status (they offered Demba Ba a £10k per week pay increase to stay with them after they were relegated last year) and if they saw Redknapp as someone to guarantee survival then it may become a possibility.

He is on £5k p/w and they were playing £300 p/w. With a year left Dorman isn't gonna accept a massive cut as even if he sits in our ressies, he will pick up his money for a year then get a club on a free the following year. His wage is going to make it very hard for him to move this summer, unless of course we terminate his contract, thus paying the wage in full anyway.

Think back. We were all pretty hopeful we were finally getting a 'Cahill' as his record looked good, also a Welsh international (says it all, so is Easter). With Andrew on £2000, it does not seem that bad as he did appear to have a bit of a track record which sadly turned out to be pie in the sky.

Would he be a quality signing? Without a doubt but he will be in high demand and i'm not sure DF would be able to find the right "role" for Akos in his system of play.

The current pro squad has 29 players.
Some of those players are earmarked to leave ( Clyne, Pedroza ) and some are not ready for the first team at least on any regular basis ( Holland, Appiah ). We will need at least 21 regular squad players. We are still missing players for the defence, midfield, wing and attack.
I would expect at least 5 more signings - 2 experienced, 2 in their prime, 1 up and coming loan signing.
There may even be another surprise departure.
Some of the players Palace sign won't be available until the season has already begun so we'll need to be patient and hope that an exciting mix of players comes out of all this, playing a brand of football we all want to see.
And all within budget!
We need another scout and another coach too, don't we? They may bring their own recommendations and contacts.

Crystal Palace are on the verge of announcing the signing of 3 new players, all three of whom have been at the training ground today. These should be announced in the next couple of days. The three players in question are Jose Baxter (3 year deal), Peter Ramage (1 year deal with a view to extend) and Zak Whitbread formerly of Norwich on a 3 year deal.

Palace also currently have free agent Sammy Clingan training with them, but it remains to be seen as to whether or not he accepts the deal on the table.

Dont know much about Baxter to comment on, however if we were to add Ramage, Whitbread and Clingan to the squad with hopefully a winger like Puncheon and a nippy striker like Taylor from Peterborough that should give us a competitive squad.

Clingan sounds good on paper, still 28, but then you read:
Whilst at Coventry City he gained the nicknames "Sideways Sammy" and "Sammy The Crab" due to his inability to pass the ball towards any team mate further up the pitch than himself.

Whitbread has done OK with Norwich and capped by the USA, but like Ramage for a 28 year old has not played that many games, constant strains seem to hit him every time he gets a run. Rather him than ramage if there was any truth in it.

Whitbread would be useful......but thought their would be a bit of a scramble over Taylor but so far no word around Peterborough on his likely destination...sort of player we could do with, don't know about a 15-20 goals a season player mind.

I keep reading now (SP etc,) that we are looking to play differently and I have to assume that includes moving away from playing 2 deep defensive midfielders which in turn leads to us play on the break with long periods of defending. This either means we have to rely on Jedi or O'K holding that role on their own. We need 2 at least in that role to provide cover. I don't thnk KG looks like he can do this on his own. O'K has the tackling but likely falls 'short' in the aerial battles.

So as well as a CF and a CB and a left winger do we need another tall defensive mid?

I'm hoping Jedi can continue to improve to handle the responsibility of this role. It does depend on the rest of the midfield doing their defensive duties. I can see how we might want to jettison KG.

The exciting bit should be the unlocking of Murray's talent assuming he isn't on the exit list too. Looking forward to this unfolding in the coming weeks.

If we play with two deeper midfielders behind a front 4 in some shape or another, one of the two needs to also be able to carry and run forward - although we used to play 4-4-2 Thomas and Gray played very much in that way - tackle, hold, pass, run. Last year the two DMs tended to stay DMs rather than one sit and one push on to provide the platform for the front 4 to play.

Lawrence will go at some point and then it will be interesting to see what happens.

Trollope was well thought of as an up and coming manager at Bristol Rovers, Lawrence left his AsstMgr/Advisory role there and Trollope was sacked within 6 months.

Some people want Lawrence to go because they believe that he is behind a lot of the negativity etc. They might be right, but equally his presence might be the only thing making Dougie look like he is potentially a good manager.

Yep agree but the key is the mentality change needed for that. Last year both stayed deep far too long and defended too close to our penalty area which is tighter and easier to manage to but invites the opponents on. The diamond has been mentioned a few times which would see one player sitting deeper. The point I was trying to make though was that for all of these systems I still think we are a quality player short in midfield that we will need to buy in.

We have 4 or 5 players (Jedi, O'Keefe, Wright and KG...and probably Marrow)who can read and break up the play very well... a main part of being a defensive midfielder.

What we don't have is a defensive midfielder who can distribute the ball very well after winning it, including Jedi. Whoever we play as defensive midfielder(s) I think Williams and the other midfielder(s) will be vital to make themselves available for short passes from the defensive midfielders when they have won it. Distribution was a real weakness last season.

No disagreement from me although someone did remark after the Lewes match that Sow may not have physically developed enough as yet.

I think Garvan could do the picking up the ball and passing accurately job but the rest of his midfield duties may not be up to scratch. It's a pity there isn't someone who could clone Jedi, Garvan, Wright and O'Keefe into a single player...but then we probably couldn't afford the wages :(

Varney to sign for Leeds in the next 24 hours which will mean Warnock will allow Ross McCormack's move to Crystal Palace to be completed.

Clyne fee has been agreed but cannot be announced until Puncheon agrees terms with Palace as he will be going the other way.

Ben Haim has met Dougie to discuss his role in the team and the terms he would be offered. In all honesty - a deal looks unlikely as things stand.

Aluko is due to return to South London tomorrow to have another chat with Dougie, with a view to sign early next week.

It's no secret Baxter is training with Palace but a deal is in place and subject to Dougie agreeing it. There is a 2 week deadline on the deal but Baxter cannot back out of it.

Dougie has made an enquiry about George Friend but is unlikely to table a bid with him likely to move the Charlton.

There is one more player that is likely to excite Palace fans who is likely to sign early next week - but I'll let that one be a nice surprise.

From what I have heard, we are likely to have 2-3 players signed by this time next week.

I'd be pretty happy if some of these came off, and it doesn't seem too unrealistic. If there is one "mystery player" to be coming in, I wonder who that could be.

The signing of Ross McCormack will finally be announced on Monday. He will join Crystal Palace on a 3 year contract.

Dougie will turn his attentions to George Boyd after losing out on Sone Aluko to Hull. We have agreed a fee with P'Boro and as George is a Palace fan personal terms are thought to be a formality.

Despite featuring in the pre-season friendly, Dougie is reluctant to offer Ramage a contract as he doesn't see him as first choice and he won't join as back up. However, if Thomas Diaz doesn't sign Ramage will.

Dougie will make a decision on those two, as well as Jose Baxter after the Dulwich hamlet friendly on Tuesday night.

Just a guess, but I reckon by this time next week we will have signed McCormack, Boyd, Diaz and Baxter.

Crystal Palace are set to miss out on Ross McCormack if the deal isn't done by Tuesday as Palace are fighting a losing battle to sign the Scottish striker who has gained the attention most recently of Wolves and Blackburn Rovers.
Jose Baxter is set to be signed after his successful trial at Palace and gaining many admirers after his fantastic performance in Palace's 5-1 victory over Lewes on Friday night.
Siphiwe Tshabalala's agent has also stated that Palace have been in contact after Dougie Freedman was pleased with the South African's trial last summer but was unable to agree a fee with Siphiwe's parent club Kaizer Chiefs.

I agree with the point here, I just wish Jedi's passing would be a but more consistent as he does hit some a few good ones, he just tends to stick a few crap ones in the middle. I remember him breaking the play, carrying the ball past a player or 2 and hitting a great pass through to Murray against WHAM away, you could have mistaken him for a White Vieira! KG often sees the right pass, it just doesn't usually get there

O'Keefe's is okay although he keeps it simple so it's rarely going to create goals. I would rather Williams not play too deep as I would hope the 2 deep-lying midfielders (assuming last seasons formation) can fire the passes into him quickly in the space behind their midfield. Garvan is the answer with the current squad but as mentioned the rest of his game is sometimes lacking, I'd certainly give him a run against the weaker sides though when we should be attacking more

If and it obviously a very big if we play 4-4-2 this season like we did on Friday night then we have got far too many central midfielders. Jedi, KG, Marrow, O'Keefe, Wright, Williams, Garvan and potentially Baxter.

There are a few of these that could cover other defensive positions at a pinch.

Crystal palace intersted in signing greg halford from portsmouth for a fee in the region of 250k. He will link up with former team mate joel ward who signed for 400k.

Freedman likes the versatilty and physicality of the 6 foot plus halford especially after the injury problems palace faced towards the end of last season. Also the added bonus of his long throw will be useful with target men wilbraham and murray in the squad.

I know this thread is about rumours and to be taken with a pinch of salt, but if true 250k for a versatile player like Halford would be a bargain. However, i can not see this happening as we have Ward as RB with decent cover, in central defence would be his best chance of first team action, and he would need that if he was to join, but does DF see him as a CB? if yes then he would be a great squad signing for us.

Ralph
23-07-2012, 08:05 AM
Fryatt and Halford wold be two good signings but actually they're not the sort of signings we've seen Dougie make. He does like to take a gamble on a player and these two are probably "in demand/proven" Campionship players. That's not a criticism of Dougie but I think he feels he can spend the money "better".

That's is a very good point, in Mox, JP and of course Clyne we had 3 of the best attacking FBs in the league but they hardly ever went over the 1/2 way line.
With Gardner, Jedi, Paddy and Murray WTF didn't we use Mox's throws more often as I am sure we probably had the least chances created of any team in the league as we just didn't attack enough?

Though Garvan does indeed have his weaknesses, he has the ability to put the ball in the net more often than our other midfielders, and not just penalties.

Just considered a caveat to that. Recalls are allowed within a transfer window if it is in the agreement, so a seaon long loan can end in January. see Sears, Freddie

However within the same window the agreement was made i am not so sure.

OOhhhh, i had the FL regulations open because of the Pompey issue and found out some interetsing stuff on this.

It looks like regulation 53.2.1 has been re-written. It now allows the recall of a Standard Loan after 28 days as long as both clubs and player agree in writting and it has been written into the agreement. This was not allowed last year.

However the only time Saints can recall is if they have a clause allowing it, it can be activated in January only.
