I re-learnt today that employers and big business types are generally arseholes.
A reasonable time off request of just two days over the entire festive period?
No, you can't have that, we arranged all the leave before you started work here, and we can't change it now, even if we said it would be ok on the day you started, seeing as it's two days, and you may have already organised plans for New Year 100 miles away from the office. PS Would you like a permanent contract now we pissed you off, so we don't have to pay your employment agency? And we would 'like' you to do complusory overtime tomorrow, even though it's not in any contract.
Erm, no.

http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2187/was-super-glue-invented-to-seal-battle-wounds-in-vietnam
As with many urban legends there's a mix of fact and fiction in what your brother-in-law said. In contrast to most such cases, though, this one's a lot more fact than fiction.
Super glue, Krazy glue, Eastman 910 and similar glues are all a special type of glue called cyanoacrylates. Cyanoacrylates were invented in 1942 by Dr. Harry Coover of Kodak Laboratories during experiments to make a special extra-clear plastic suitable for gun sights. He found they weren't suitable for that purpose, so he set the formula aside. Six years later he pulled it out of the drawer thinking it might be useful as a new plastic for airplane canopies. Wrong again--but he did find that cyanoacrylates would glue together many materials with incredible strength and quick action, including two very expensive prisms when he tried to test the ocular qualities of the substance. Seeing possibilities for a new adhesive, Kodak developed "Eastman #910" (later "Eastman 910") a few years later as the first true "super glue." In a now-famous demonstration conducted in 1959, Dr. Coover displayed the strength of this new product on the early television show "I've Got a Secret," where he used a single drop placed between two steel cylinders to lift the host of the show, Garry Moore, completely off of the ground.
The use of cyanoacrylate glues in medicine was considered fairly early on. Eastman Kodak and Ethicon began studying whether the glues could be used to hold human tissue together for surgery. In 1964 Eastman submitted an application to use cyanoacrylate glues to seal wounds to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Soon afterward Dr. Coover's glue did find use in Vietnam--reportedly in 1966 cyanoacrylates were tested on-site by a specially trained surgical team, with impressive results. According to an interview with Dr. Coover by the Kingsport Times-News:
Coover said the compound demonstrated an excellent capacity to stop bleeding, and during the Vietnam War, he developed disposal cyanoacrylate sprays for use in the battle field.
"If somebody had a chest wound or open wound that was bleeding, the biggest problem they had was stopping the bleeding so they could get the patient back to the hospital. And the consequence was--many of them bled to death. So the medics used the spray, stopped the bleeding, and were able to get the wounded back to the base hospital. And many, many lives were saved," Coover said.
"This was very powerful. That's something I'm very proud of--the number of lives that were saved," he said.
Ironically, the Food & Drug Administration hadn't given approval for the medical use of the compound at that point. But the military used the substance, anyway (reference 1).
Although cyanoacrylate glues were useful on the battlefield, the FDA was reluctant to approve them for civilian use. In part, this was due to a tendency of the early compounds (made from "methyl-2-cyanoacrylate") to irritate the skin as the glue reacted with water and cured in the skin, releasing cyanoacetate and formaldehyde. A compound called "butyl-2-cyanoacrylate" was developed to reduce toxicity, but suffered from brittleness and cracking a few days after application. Finally an improved cyanoacrylate glue was developed for medical applications called "2-octyl-cyanoacrylate." This compound causes less skin irritation and has improved flexibility and strength--at least three times the strength of the butyl-based compound (reference 2). As a result, in 1998 the FDA approved 2-octyl cyanoacrylate for use in closing wounds and surgical incisions, and in 2001 approved it for use as a "barrier against common bacterial microbes including certain staphylococci, pseudomonads, and Escherichia coli" (reference 2). This latest incarnation was marketed under the name Traumaseal as well as the more popular Dermabond.

Don't believe everything you read; many of the sources are horribly biased.
And of course he did not fiddle whilst Rome burnt, not least because the fiddle hadn't been invented.
There was a programme on TV this morning about the Fall of the Roman Empire and it centred on Nero today.
It didn't mention him fiddling while Rome burned but he was definitely a sandwich short of a picnic.
One of the laws he apparently introduced to get money, because he had started to rebuild Rome, then ran out of money, was to get all the wealthy people to kill themselves and leave all their money to him. If they refused, then the wealthy persons family would suffer the consequences.
It's a really interesting series.
It's certainly true that Rome needed rebuilding after the main fire.
And it's certainly true that the rich would have been required to bear the burden, and that Nero would have run out of money if he had - and why should he? - tried to pay for all of that himself.
But I don't recognise that tale ; it has Suetonius writtem all over it and so should be treated with the utmost caution.
In many ways, he was a good ruler. Even Wiki, has this to say abotu him : which of these laws would one disagree with?
Under Nero, restrictions were put on the amount of bail and fines.[61] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero#cite_note-annals-xiii-28-60)[62] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero#cite_note-61) There was a discussion in the Senate on the misconduct of the freedmen class, and a strong demand was made that patrons should have the right of revoking freedom.[63] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero#cite_note-62)[64] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero#cite_note-63) Nero supported the freedmen and ruled that patrons had no such right. After tax collectors were accused of being too harsh to the poor, Nero transferred collection authority to lower commissioners. The Senate tried to pass a law in which the crimes of one slave applied to all slaves within a household. Nero vetoed the measure.[65] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero#cite_note-64)[61] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero#cite_note-annals-xiii-28-60) Nero banned any magistrate or procurator from exhibiting public entertainment for fear that the venue was being used as a method to sway the populace.[66] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero#cite_note-65) Additionally, there were many impeachments and removals of government officials along with arrests for extortion and corruption.[67] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero#cite_note-66) When further complaints arose that the poor were being overly taxed, Nero attempted to repeal all indirect taxes.[68] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero#cite_note-annals-xiii-50-67) The Senate convinced him this action would bankrupt the public treasury.[68] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero#cite_note-annals-xiii-50-67) As a compromise, taxes were cut from 4.5% to 2.5%.[69] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero#cite_note-annals-xiii-51-68) Additionally, secret government tax records were ordered to become public.[69] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero#cite_note-annals-xiii-51-68) To lower the cost of food imports, merchant ships were declared tax-exempt.[69] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero#cite_note-annals-xiii-51-68) Also, fees for lawyers were limited.

I think this programme was more focused on his eccentric side, rather than the good he did.
How much of it was true, I haven't a clue. I'm going to search out a good book about him, though.
I'm going to search out a good book about him, though.Actually there isn't really a good (readable) one, mainly because there were no contemporary sources on his rule.
Tacitus is the most reliable but he was 50 years later and biased - if otherwise accurate - to boot.
Worth reading is I, Claudius and Claudius The God though ; although they just paint him as the monster.

Actually there isn't really a good (readable) one, mainly because there were no contemporary sources on his rule.
Tacitus is the most reliable but he was 50 years later and biased - if otherwise accurate - to boot.
Worth reading is I, Claudius and Claudius The God though ; although they just paint him as the monster.
I've already got I, Claudius.
This one doesn't look too bad

Even so, he faces the same problem as all authors on the subject : only two (maybe three if you count Dio which would never do) primary sources and neither of those contemporary.
But thanks for the tip; I'll look out for that.

Third, I've learnt that I'll be getting a VAT inspection at work because I had to cheek to claim a repayment from them.

Fifth, I learnt that I'm absolutely useless at Mario Kart.

My hair isn't much shorter really than before - just a bit neater. From the front, it doesn't look any shorter really, just the back is shorter than I'd have liked. But it grows quick, so fear not, Mazikins :)

It wasn't just the haircut. I have 2 different colours put on it, too.
That is pretty normal prices for women. You men get it easy :)

It is a rip off really, I suppose, but the colour they use lasts far longer than the dye you can buy over the counter.
I had an all over colour, then had red put underneath my fringe, which isn't now my fringe because I've restyled it and my fringe is different, if that make sense :)

1) Dating. Even in this modern age it's nearly always the man who has to take the first step.

Listening to men
Playing with breasts when you want
Doors being held open for them
Being able to not to worry about spending 100+ on a hairdo
Being bought a hoover to help with the housework
Joking

How is that easier on a woman? She could be wanting the man to ask her on a date, and he doesn't
So it's actually harder on a woman than a man, in that respect.

Getting prefential treatment from strangers because they think if they're nice to you (women) then you might sleep with them.

Shaving every day
You don't get itchy balls that need scratching when you're in public
Your wife doesn't tell you how much inferior to her you are
You're never right even when you are

1. We have to wax our legs and things, so that doesn't count.
2. You can have that one. We certainly don't get that.
3. No, but your husband might, so that doesn't count.
4. That works both ways, too, so that doesn't count either.

The hardest thing sometimes about being a man is when you get in from work after having a really crap day at work to you're wife complaining that she's had a really crap day with the kids and the dog you wanted, so you can sort them all out because she's had enough. And also why is it taking so long to decorate the front bedroom?

Your first point.
That happens to women too. Having a really cr*p day at work and having to go home and cook a dinner, do the ironing and clear up the mess your husband has left behind him. So doesn't count. Sorry and all that.
Your second point.
Because you play Mario Kart too much :D

Women get it easier as they can use breasts as bribes/enticements.
It's very hard to use moobs in the same way.
