View Full Version : Most enjoyable own goal you've ever seen.
I don't have to spell it out do I? That goal last Saturday was brilliant, I'd rather grab a point in the last minute with that than a 40 yard goal of the season effort, the faces of the Birmingham fans were superb. Gary Rowett your a legend.

I remember a very funny own goal from 1970.I was young enough to find it amusing even though we eventually lost the game in question. It was against Burnley,on a really slippery, frozen pitch.A high ball came into the palace box,and a game of "head tennis" ensued amongst four or five palace defenders (not a Burnley player in sight),and ended with John Loughlan, who couldn't keep his feet and was falling backwards, knocking a back header over John Jackson, who was desperately trying to back pedal, but getting nowhere (like a cartoon character who's just walked off a very high building, and, realising it,trys to scramble back to safety).Pity the cameras weren't there,it was a classic of it's kind.

One of the best own goals I have ever seen was by Jeff Hopkin in the 4-3 Millwall game at Selhurst. Come on, who lobs there own keeper from 30 yards under no pressure. Looking back at it it was funny, but I went beserk when it went in.

It says something about us Palace fans that everyone's coming up with Palace own goals under the heading "Most enjoyable own goals". In which case what about Richard Shaw's opener at The Dell after 20 odd seconds?

Jeff Hopkins did it in a play off at Swindon as well didn't he?
I don't know if it was classed as an o.g. but Paul Barron made a balls up against Wolves at home once when he comfortably caught the ball, fell backwards, let go of the ball, and it rolled over the line.

Ken,
I remeber that Shaw own goal too. We won the game 3 or 4-1 I think, but do you remember Shaw apologising to the travelling faithful at the end of the game? He was most humble.. Come to think of it maybe we should show Goldberg the video.

After seeing this on the season review video I recently purchased I have to agree- a classic! Still it wouldn't have been so funny if Palace hadn't come back to win the game.

You saw better own goals before the back pass rule was brought in. Players were always trying to send casual 30 chips to the keeper's hands only for it to end up in the back of the net.

The best one's got to be that south american keeper who accidentally threw the ball in to his own net - hilarious

Wasn't Jeff Hopkin the own goal king for Palace, or does someone else challenge him for the title?
Lee Dixon against Coventry one season. Sent it past Seamen from just inside his own half, right on the touchline - priceless!
If it's Palace, then David Hopkin scored a stunning diving header against Norwich in the final game of one season. We were about to go into the playoffs. It was a bullet. I was drunk and I just cracked up, much to everyone around me's displeasure ;)
