View Full Version : If you could go back in time

If you could go back to a match in the past what one would it be??? The Burnley promotion match in 1979 would be mine just ahead of the semi versus Liverpool.
It would have to be the Burnley game. At the time I was living in Scotland and couldn't get down to the game. I spent most of the time from kick off to the end trying to find coverage or any mention of the score on the radio. I was fast losing all will to live when a telephone call from my by then drunken uncle saved my sanity. Thankfully I have a record of that game and that season fully contained in 5 scrapbooks scrammed full of everything Palace. It must have cost my Uncle a bloody fortune in Papers.

I would go back to the Cup Final. Just after Ian Wright scores to put us 3-2 up I would go on and kick Mark Hughes extremely hard in the boll*cks. Sorted.

Too young for Burnley so it has to be THE Semi-Final, closely followed by the Final (1st game of course) 7 bloody mins!!!!!!
BTW Why did Mark Bright where a vest in the Semi, it wasn't cold was it?!

Either. Semi Final v Liverpool as was too young. Or The Fa Cup game v Wolves Midweek game 1995/96. We won 4-1 all excellent goals. Dowie, Pitcher and Armstrong. Again to young to go away game on my own.

I would probably go back to the semi against the scousers and have a £500 scorecast on Ian Rush to score 1st and the game to finish 3 - 3. I would then of had an in match bet in extra time on Palace to win and Pardew to score the next goal

I'd go back to the 11th of September 1989 and put every £ I owned on Liverpool to beat us 9-0. Then take that winnings and right away put it on us to beat them 4-3 at Villa Park in the same season.
Then I'd sit on my cash till now and step in.......

Have to be the burnley game for sheer atmosphere. I was squeezed in between 2 of those pale blue disabled cars on the top of the whitehorse terrace. Although i was only 11 at the time I can remember how loud the noise was when Ian Walsh scored. I wonder if we will ever be able to rebuild a fan base like we had 30 years ago. You sort of sense with a period of sustained success it might be possible, but fate has always conspired against us.
The cup semi final in 1990 runs it a close second for an emotional rollercoaster though.
In recent times I suppose the Sunderland play off semi's were buzzing, and one date I'd love to forget would be that Southampton match.

Burnley was the nuts, as was beating the Arse, 5 months later in front of 43,000. That first few months of that season was magical.

I'd go back to my very first Palace game v. Middlesbro' Good Friday 1969. It all went by in a bit of a blur and I'd like to take it all in again, especially the sounds and feel of Selhurst back then with a large crowd, the smell of the onions on the burger stands, cigarette smoke, and the excitement and tension of the match even though it ended 0-0. Got me hooked and the rest is misery ... I mean history.

Shipp Ahoy!

On another non Palace related one I think I would go back to see the Beatles when they still performed at the Cavern and see the start of a piece of history :)

I was lucky enough to have attended both the Burnley match and the cup final, but the first play-off win against Blackburn took some beating as well.
