To this day, I'm still miffed I missed this game. I think it was the only home game I missed all that season, and typically, it was the one Palace chose to score 5 goals in 12 minutes (rather than 12 matches). At the time, a league record (could still be as far as I know). Were you there? It would have been around 74/75 I think. You'd certainly rememember it! 5 GOALS IN 12 MINUTES!!!! What was it like? Must have been like dying and going to football heaven. Please tell.

Al it was the bollox. It was one of those games that sort of sticks in the memory but because there seemed to be so much occuring I can remember very little about. can't even remember who scored but whenever we play them i always remember MMMMM 6-2.
Also in those days we always had one game a season that was High scoring (SUFC 5-1 MUFC 5-0 etc)

Yes that was the right season. I didn't start going until the following season when we drew 3-3 and I remeber being excited because it was being televised for The Big Match. 3-1 up and threw it away. Well quelle bloody surprise. I remember Peter Taylor walking off at half time having just scored a penalty to put us 2-1 up with Brian Moore saying "and at half time with Selhurst Park bubbling, it's Crystal Palace 2 Swindon Town 1". So vivid. I'd love to see archive video of that.

I was there. I've only just signed up to this forum, which explains why I'm replying so long after the previous post on this thread.

Yes, it was 1974-75, and yes, it was claimed as a League record at the time. Whether or not the claim was followed up, I don't know.

Scorers? I can't remember, but I think that a couple may have been unusal - Chatterton and Doris might have been amongst the goals. All the fun was over by half-time; we were 5-1 up. I think the goals started at around the 20-minute mark, Swindon got one back before half-time, the second half was very tame.

And a piece of trivia; didn't Swindon have to wear Palace's second strip in that game because the ref. decided that their shirts and ours clashed?

I was there whether it was a few pints to many before the game but at half time found it hard remembering the 5 goals it happened so quickly.... My guess on one of the scorers would be Whittle possibly he scored 2

Thank you for reminding me of that great match! I was just starting to follow Palace in those days (1974) having seen a handful of matches since 1970 but not being a Palace fan. Well, I think at half time in that game I had made my mind up pretty well that Palace were the greatest team in the world!
I can't remember the way the goals were scored, what I do remember is that like many games of this type, the second half fell away a bit and I think Palace were 5-0 up at the break, but Swindon came back to score twice, to Palace's one...looking at the records it was only the second home League game that season, having beaten Tranmere (for whom Steve Coppell played one of his earliest games) and losing away to Brighton in front of over 26,000...so my God! It was a long time ago!!
Here are the statistics: Division Three Sept 7 1974
Palace 6 Swindon 2 Team: Paul Hammond, Roy Barry, Stewart Jump, Jeff Johnson, Mel Blyth, Derek Jeffries, Alan Whittle, Mark Lindsay, Dave Swindlehurst, Nick Chatterton, Peter Taylor. Sub: Don Rogers for Barry
Palace scorers: Jump, Swindlehurst 2, Whittle 2 (1 pen), Chatterton
It was quite an historical match in a lot of ways...I think it was the last League match for players like Mel Blyth and Don Rogers, Paul Hammond gave way to Tony Burns in goal and just after this Terry Venables and Ian Evans came from QPR (in exchange for Rogers) I think Palace had their first ever loan player at the time too, Wyn Davies but he did'nt play in this game. The gate was around 14,000 and just to show that life has always been a roller coaster for Palace, they lost 1-4 at Selhurst three days later to Bristol City in the League Cup..won the next three home games (Wrexham, Preston and Grimsby) and then lost 1-4 again at home to Chesterfield ALL INSIDE A MONTH!

Additionally - it rained, heavily. Standing on the Holmesdale I decided it was time to go under cover in future.

Small correction - Bobby Tambling was our first loan player before he signed for Palace.

I miss the odd home game a season and my attendence record was even better before I had children. I have somehow managed to miss the 1-6 against Liverpool (still on holiday I recall), the 5-1 against Pompey when Southgate scored (got married that day) and went skiing last Saturday so missed the 6-3!

I have good memories of beating Swindon 5-0 at home in a midweek game during the run-in of 76/77 as part of the run when we shot up the table in the last couple of months to sneak into the last promotion place.

I remember a fantastic Harkouk goal and a couple from Jeff Bourne who had gone on a truely AndyJohnsonesque run of scoring after his signing a few weeks earlier. There's not been many other players whose introduction to the team has had such a dramatic effect as Bourne (Dave Madden is the other obvious one). A Phil Holder penalty and George Graham completed the rout according to the record books although I don't remember much about them; Holder seemed to score a lot of penalties in those days. People who think Shipps is overweight should have seen Holder waddling about midfield in those days.

A great night as I recall. Certainly the biggest win I'd ever seen at the time and it was pretty rare for us to score as many again for a good few years.

Bourne was one of my favourites - never flashy but got the job done well

That is quite correct. I remember the game well, standing in the Whitehorse with my brother and grandfather (god rest his soul). I remember someone saying that Swindon's white shirts looked like our away kit, but it wasn't until there was a corner right in front of us and we noticed the club badge (on the arms if I remember rightly) that the mystery was solved.

It blows my mind to think that this was nearly 30 years ago!! I must be about ready for the OAP's home

It's hard to imagine that that would be allowed to happen now, although I remember it happening at least a couple of times during the 70's. Grimsby played in our red & blue stripes in a match that was on the Big Match in 76/77. I remember Grimsby keeper Nigel Batch, who I think was a late replacement, having a blinder although we still won. I've also got a vague recollection of the cameras catching one of his upfield punts hitting a pigeon which spiralled to the ground much to the amusement of the commentators and the excitement of whichever editors it is who compile those "what happened next" slots.

We also had to wear Sheffield United's all-yellow away kit in an away game after our promotion (not sure whether it was 77/78 or 78/79). I really can't think that any team in any division would play in the other team's kit nowadays. Would you be happy to see Palace take the field with the oppositions badge prominently displayed on their chests ? Strange to remember, as I do, Palace playing at Bramall Lane with United's tacky crossed-swords logo on our kit; at least we won.

EAM, I imagine sponsors would be a big hurdle to it.

I remember seeing QPR reserves wear Palace's away kit in the late 1970s- the yellow job with black flicks down the collar bones.

Did anaybody else think that Burnley would be made to change their kit in the recent home game?

Have to agree with jonesy on this one. I was at the game, but I can't remember much about it, apart from the amazing score!

Was that the game with the Steve Perrin 30-yard half-volley? One of my top three or four Palace goals.

I wonder if anyone remembers a trip to Leeds United in the 1979/80 season where Palace wore the "Admiral" red & blue broad striped kit, well everyone except Ian Walsh who wore the "Umbro" regular red & blue striped shirt from the 76/77 season! It was a truly strange sight! Surely only Palace could do something that occurs in sunday league football in the highest League in England?!!
There is actually a picture of it in the following weeks home game v Forest (Dec 79), it's hard to make out straight away, but you can certainly see Walsh standing between Paul Hinshelwood and Jim Cannon with a different logo and Palace badge...Good Old Palace!!

Do you think in 30 years time we'll be talking about the 6-3 match against Stoke in the same way? I would hope so, although a week down the line and my memory is a little hazy already.

I remember a bit about the day rather than the game, although I was only 8. We took my cousin along that day to try to entice him to the red and blue but he still didnt change from West Ham. I remember the rain and thinking in my own little naive way that Palace were the best in the wet. In subsequent games, I could be seen praying for the heavens to open up so that we would obviously win. Our pictures made it into the programme for the next game as well..... Don't remember any of the goals though:(

Well spotted ! I've managed to dig it out and scan it in (hopefully) ...

Superbly amateurish. What the hell happened ? Is there anybody out there connected with the club that remembers what went wrong ?

Did they perhaps turn up with one shirt missing and then had to borrow the closest matching shirt available from the away support ? I can't imagine that they'd have been able to pick one up in Leeds at short notice or why the squad would arrive for a 1st Division match with shirts that hadn't been the official kit for almost 3 years.

Have just joined bbs and am so pleased to find this game having been discussed, as the people I sit with in the Holmesdale are too young to have been there!. I was about 16 at the time and remember being in a large throng on the Holmesdale terracing (we still had big crowds even tho' we were in the 3rd Division) and the game meandering along at 0-0 even though we were on top. Suddenly it was bedlam, and it seemed that every time we attacked, we scored. I've recalled it over the intervening years that we scored five in five minutes! I remember my hero Taylor being on fire and Whittle scoring. The second half was a real disappointment as we thought we were going to get 10!

I was about two years old, so celebrated the victory by confusing my mum by smearing chocolate mousse all over my face and subsequently unleashing a giant smelly dump in my terry towelling nappy.

This was my first ever game, in 1975 I think. It was a great introduction to watching Palace even though I had supported them from about 4 years old (1968) My next game was 3 - 3 against maybe Huddersfield or Luton (can't remember) But the Swindon game I will always remember.

If my brain is working, wasnt it wind that gave the goals? won the first half 5 v 0 at half time and lost the 2nd half 2 v 1?

Or has vodka taken over.

This thread has spanned almost exactly 13 years with not even 2 full pages of posts.

So, 8 years on, why was Ian Walsh wearing that shirt? FFS ANSWER!!
