"Everything I do" by Bryan Adams,
takes me back to my junior school days back in 91'

This thread is obviously appealing very strongly to those of a certain age (Lionel, Nat Cole, Sad Cafe, Marvin, Chi-Lites etc). I therefore feel obliged to weigh in with a couple from my youth. These were first danced to (with appropriate warm young females) at the Top Rank Suite in Croydon, and the affiliated Zodiac Club a couple of doors down the road.
- Your Song (Elton)
- Hey there lonely girl (Eddie Holman and his scarily falsetto voice)
Venues or songs ring any bells out there ??

Here I go out to sea again
The sunshine fills my hair
And dreams hang in the air
Gulls in the sky and in my blue eye
You know it feels unfair
There's magic everywhere
Look at me standing
Here on my own again
Up straight in the sunshine
No need to laugh and cry
It's a wonderful, wonderful life
No need to run and hide
It's a wonderful, wonderful life
The sun's in your eyes, the heat is in your hair
They seem to hate you
because you're there
And I need a friend, oh I need a friend,
to make me happy
Not stand here on my own
Look at me standing
Here on my own again
Up straight in the sunshine
I need a friend, oh I need a friend
To make me happy, not so alone
Look at me here
Here on my own again
Up straight in the sunshine

For me ( in a kind of twisted way ) Its Elvis Costello's "I want you". An epic vocal performance and vitriolic lyrics ( some of which are reproduced without permission below .... you have to hear it to understand the repitition of "I want you " )
I want you
It's the stupid details that my heart is breaking for
It's the way your shoulders shake and what they're shaking for
it's knowing that he knows you now after only guessing
I want you
It's the thought of him undressing you or you undressing
I want you
He tossed some tattered compliment your way
I want you
And you were fool enough to love it when he said
"I want you"

Great selection of classic soul songs. Methinks you are a person of 50's vintage and wonder whether you ever migrated from the Sunday afternoon Suite sessions, to the Thursday night jams upstairs at the Zodiac Club? (hot, sweaty sessions DJ'd by a fat fella whose eclectic mix of Aretha, Bobby Byrd, James Brown, Free and Prince Buster numbers to an ethnically mixed crowd, was just the DB's. Add the frisson of excitement provided by members of the Northwood and Bang'ole street gangs who frequented the joint, and generally liked to have a fight afterwards by way of appreciation - and you may just whiff the heady atmosphere of the early 70's in Croydon.

Loads of stuff by Stevie Wonder before he got into Bavarian Beer Cellar music for the classically awful "Happy Birthday to ya!".
How about this? A short excerpt from "As"...
As around the sun the earth knows she's revolving
And the rose buds know to bloom in early May
Just as hate knows love's the cure
You can rest your mind assure
That I'll be loving you always
As now can't reveal the mystery of tomorrow
But in passing will grow older every day
Just as all is born is new
Do you know what I say is true
That I'll be loving you always
...
Did you know that true love asks for nothing
Her acceptance is the way we pay
Did you know that life has given love a guarantee
To last through forever and another day
Just as time knew to move on since the beginning
And the seasons know exactly when to change
Just as kindness knows no shame
Know through all your joy and pain
That I'll be loving you always
As today I know I'm leaving but tomorrow
Could make me the past but that I mustn't fear
For I'll know deep in my mind
The love of me I've left behind
Cause I'll be loving you always
Loads of stuff by Marvin Gaye & Curtis Mayfield there's too many good songs to pick just one.
What about "I just can't help myself" by Terry Callier? Beautiful...

God, there are some real classics here, some of which I'd forgotten all about. A few that really do it for me are "nobody knows" by the Tony Rich project (good shout on that Mark), "You do something to me"(Paul Weller), "don't want to miss a thing" (aerosmith). Jon Secada's "Angel" REALLY gets to me too.
The two that perhaps mean most to me though are "Angie" by the Stones, and Terrence Trent Darby's "Holding onto you". The former just has VERY strong personal memories, while the latter for me is more obviously written by a man in love at the time than any other song. The cut down version that got released on the album doesn't do it justice. The ful 5 1/2 minute live version is simply awesome.

Our first dance was a song called "Dedicated" by Paul Carrack. Bet not too many people have had played at their wedding.
Years earlier (and Monty knows this story so its cool) I had a relationship with a girl from Singapore. I went out there for a month and one night when we were having a drink in a hotel bar, she went off to the loo and I asked the band to play a song for her. When she came back I said I'd asked for a request for her and when they started playing it she burst into tears saying it was the nicest thing anyone had ever done for her. The song? "The Greatest Love of All" by George Benson. Yeah I used to be a smoothie. What went wrong? :)
